HHSO YOUTH CONCERTO COMPETITION – February 2, 2013 The 2013 Youth Concerto Competition will be held at St. Luke’s Church on February 2, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Since 2000, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra has sponsored this program for youngsters under age 18. Its purpose is to provide talented young musicians the opportunity to perform standard orchestral repertoire from memory before an audience. The HHSO is proud to present this Concerto Competition with the hopes of inspiring a younger generation to pursue their goals in the world of music.

HILTON HEAD INTERNATIONAL YOUNG ARTISTS PIANO COMPETITION (HHIYAPC) – March 4-9, 2013 The Hilton Head International Piano Competition will present its 2nd Hilton Head International Young Artists Piano Compe-tition for pianists ages 13 through 17, March 4 – 9, 2013. Twenty competitors will compete in three rounds of competition for cash prizes, a 4-week summer scholarship and a return engagement with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra. In Round III, six finalists will perform a movement or movements from a concerto with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.

SYMPHONY UNDER THE STARS – April 9 and 10, 2013 For two evenings on April 9 and 10, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra will offer its annual “Symphony Under the Stars” in a large festive tent at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. This coming year’s program, “At the Movies”, will be con-ducted by Maestro John Morris Russell with music from the greatest movies of all times. Patrons can enjoy dinner with friends at tables of 10 and then relax and enjoy this lively program. Table groups use the concert themes to inspire costumes, table deco-rations and dinner menus as they compete for a variety of prizes. What a fun way to get into the spirit of this exciting evening!

SPECIAL EVENTS



John Morris Russell was named Music Direc-tor and Principal Conductor of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra in March, 2012. He begins his tenure with the opening of the Symphony’s 2012-2013 Season. Russell has won interna-tional praise for his extraordinary music-mak-ing and farsighted leadership, and is considered one of North America's leaders in orchestral educational programming. He was appointed Conductor of the Cincinnati Pops in 2011, one of the most respected pops orchestras in the United States. For the past 11 years Mr. Russell has served as Music Director of the Windsor (Ontario, Canada) Symphony Orchestra where he is credited for “having fostered a decade of unprecedented artistic growth”. No stranger to the area, he has also served as associate con-ductor of the Savannah Symphony Orchestra where he met and married his wife, Thea.

As the Principal Guest Conductor in our 2011-2012 Season, Maestro Russell brought renewed excitement to musicians and audi-ences alike. His musical interpretation and direction was highly praised by the musi-cians and brought standing ovations from audiences. An engaging personality, he en-tertains listeners with his vast knowledge of music from symphony to jazz. He gener-ates an enthusiasm that is both appealing and engaging and reaches out to all ages of the community.

The HHSO is fast becoming one of the Southeast’s pre-eminent orchestras, and with the addition of John Morris Russell, it hopes to enhance Hilton Head Island as a center of art and culture and be a role model for musical education.
