The Church Mouse September, 2015
Dear friends,
As we have been talking about funds available for our Expansion/Renovation plans, you have heard about
the Gerritsen bequest. Some may not remember Burt Gerritsen or know who he was. Burton Henry Gerritsen,
Sr. was a native of New Jersey, who met his wife while he was serving in the US Army during World War II.
His wife was a native of Anderson, SC, and from her parents, they inherited a piece of commercial property in
SC that was leased for a convenience store and gas station. Burt and his wife came to Durham, NC when Burt
was offered a position with the Ligget and Myers Tobacco company as a chemist. When Burt's wife died, he
moved to Hillsborough, and lived on Red Bird Lane, across from his only son and only grandson.
Burt became a member of HPC on February 9, 1986 transferring his membership from the Trinity
Avenue Presbyterian Church in Durham. This church is where Karl Travis spoke last month on the subject of
Generosity. Burt was ordained an elder here at HPC on January 24, 1987 and Burt served as Moderator of
Building and Grounds following the fire in 1987 and the restoration of our church facilities.
Burt and his wife were only children, and they had only one son and one grandson. Sadly the son and
grandson both preceded Burt in death, and he was left with absolutely no family except his church family at
HPC. Burt appointed me as his Power of Attorney, and I accepted responsibility for his medical care and
financial management for three and a half years until his death on November 24, 2011. Burt's will bequeathed
his entire estate to Hillsborough Presbyterian Church. The cash and stocks totalled approximately $455,000.
We are hoping to receive at least $320,000 from the sale of the commercial property in SC and the residence
here in town.
In reviewing Burt's financial records, I was impressed by his financial stewardship and generosity. He
managed his financial resources well, lived a modest lifestyle, but was generous in his support of multiple
charitable causes, foremost of which was Hillsborough Presbyterian Church. He loved HPC, and loved this
church facility.
The first time I visited Burt in his home, I noticed a wheelchair. Burt did not need a wheelchair at that
time. He explained that the wheelchair was his wife's. She was confined to a wheelchair for many years and
Burt took care of her. Later Burt himself spent a great deal of time in a wheelchair. In taking him to his
medical appointments, hospital visits, and moving to and from Brookshire and Carilllon Assisted Living, I
folded that wheelchair and put it in my trunk many times! I also encountered the challenges of getting Burt
into buildings for his appointments. Because of my close association with Burt, I feel confident that he would
be very happy that we are planning on using the funds he graciously gave us to make our facility accessible to
all. I feel blessed to have gotten to share nine years of life with Burt. I was honored that he trusted me enough
to appoint me as his POA, and that we as a congregation had the opportunity to be the church and become
family to Burt when he had no other family. May his generosity inspire us all to respond generously to a
generous and gracious God!

HPC BOOK CLUB
Mark your calendars!
On September 27th:
(Note the date change!!)
We will be discussing the best seller George
Washington’s Secret Six: The Spy Ring that Saved
the American Revolution, by Brian Kilmeade and
Don Yeager.
“When George Washington beat a hasty retreat from
New York City in August 1776, many thought the
American Revolution might soon be over. Instead,
Washington rallied—thanks in large part to a little-
known, top-secret group called the Culper Spy Ring.
He realized that he couldn’t defeat the British with
military might, so he recruited a sophisticated and
deeply secretive intelligence network to infiltrate New
York. Drawing on extensive research, Brian Kilmeade
and Don Yaeger have offered fascinating portraits of
these spies: a reserved Quaker merchant, a tavern
keeper, a brash young longshoreman, a curmudgeonly
Long Island bachelor, a coffeehouse owner, and a
mysterious woman. Long unrecognized, the secret six
are finally receiving their due among the pantheon of
American heroes.” (amazon.com)
“This is my kind of history book. Get ready. Here’s
the action.” —Brad Meltzer, bestselling author of The
Fifth Assassin and host of Decoded
The on October 11th we will meet to discuss Anne
Lamott’s Help Thanks Wow: The Three Essential
Prayers. New York Times-bestselling author Anne Lamott
writes about the three simple prayers essential to
coming through tough times, difficult days and the
hardships of daily life. It is these three prayers –
asking for assistance from a higher power,
appreciating what we have that is good, and feeling
awe at the world around us – that can get us through
the day and can show us the way forward. In Help
Thanks Wow Lamott recounts how she came to these
insights, explains what they mean to her and how they
have helped, and explores how others have embraced
these same ideas. (amazon.com)
Thanks to Annette Jurgelski for coordinating
refreshments for our Book Club meetings: Robin and
Brenda have volunteered for September 27th, and Mae
Lee and Stephanie for October’s meeting. We meet at
7:00 PM in the church library, and visitors and guests
are always welcome!
