Car Engines cont’dDuratec 20E - 2.0L 16V DOHC I-4 (Focus)

Meets PZEV and Tier 2 Bin 3 Emissions Standards (Standard onall models except the ST in California, Massachusetts, Maine,New York, Vermont and is optional in the cross-border states).A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, an electronicallycontrolled 4-speed automatic transmission is optional. The Focus Duratec 20E - 2.0L 16V DOHC I-4 engine not onlymeets California’s stringent partial zero emissions vehicle(PZEV) standard, it also satisfies other “California emissionsstates” emissions requirements and the federal Tier 2 phase-inpercentage and sales-weighted NOx average requirement forall remaining states. Plus “zero” gasoline evaporativeemissions from the fuel system. And, the Focus PZEV does this all without affecting its livelyperformance, fun-to-drive personality or economical nature. In short, the Focus PZEV delivers real-world environmentalbenefits without a single compromise for its owners.

Mean and GreenWith 130 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 129 lb.-ft. of torque at4400 rpm, it’s both “Mean and Green.” And because Focusitself is relatively lightweight, it has a high torque-to-weight ratio, which also contributes to great off-the-line acceleration and offersdrivers even more fun behind the wheel. Focus PZEV isimpressive no matter which way you look at it.

Some key PZEV features and benefits include:• Specific emissions actions include close placement of the

catalytic converters to the exhaust manifold to allow them toreach operating temperatures more quickly, and electricallycontrolled exhaust gas recirculation that recycles inert gasinto the combustion chamber to reduce NOx emissions andimprove fuel economy

• Lobes on the chain-driven, cast-iron double overheadcamshafts are chilled during manufacture to harden them. This action helps eliminate valve adjustments throughouta useful life of 10 years or 150,000 miles (under normaldriving conditions). Each cam runs in five cam bearings, for smooth and quiet operation

• Air Induction System (AIS) with an extended life air filter thatis designed to last 15 years or 150,000 miles under normaldriving conditions

• The camshafts run directly in the aluminum cylinder head andare driven by a “silent” chain, which provides quieter operation

• To enhance fuel efficiency, the engine uses 5W20 SAEgrade oil for reduced resistance to flow, and operates at arelatively low idle speed of 700 rpm. Maximum enginespeed is 7000 rpm

SUV Transmissions5-speed Manual Overdrive Transmission(Escape)Transmission code G5M

Major features and benefits:• A synchronizer in each gear acts as a clutch, speeding

up or slowing down the selected gear to match the speedof the previous gear for smooth shifting

• First four gears provide optimum performance• An overdrive fifth gear reduces engine rpm at highway

speeds for improved fuel economy and quiet highwayperformance

Electronically Controlled Continuously VariableTransmission (Escape Hybrid)Transmission code eCVT

Major features and benefits:• Combines power from the Atkinson cycle gasoline engine

and the electric motor to drive the wheels• Eliminates the noticeable upshifts and downshifts of

conventional automatic transmissions• Works seamlessly, with no jerks, jolts, power interruptions

or detectible gear ratio changes• At low speeds and light loads the eCVT receives input from

the Vehicle System Controller (VSC) and shuts down theengine, thereby increasing fuel economy by running onelectric power only. The engine is also temporarily shutdown during coasting and while the vehicle pauses at astop light

• The eCVT has two key advantages over a conventional 4-speed step transmission: improved fuel economy andenhanced performance

Electronically Controlled 4-speed AutomaticOverdrive Transmission (Escape)Transmission code CD4E

Major features and benefits:• A torque converter with bypass clutch for optimum efficiency• Silent chain and planetary gear design provide quiet

operation• Overdrive lowers engine rpm at highway speeds and

contributes to reduced fuel use• Fully electronically controlled shifting matches engine

performance and driver demands• Powertrain Control Module (PCM) compensates shift points

for altitude and temperature variations • Offers 6500 rpm shift capability • “Home-safe” mode allows limited function in second and

third gears if electronic control is lost • CD4E has a transmission control switch (TCS) or “overdrive

lockout” for use on hilly terrain and when towing a trailer

• Full electronic solenoid control of clutch elements

• Internal shift control module

(1) Driving with a 5-speed automatic transmission (if equipped) — the automatic transmission electronically controls the shift feel by using an adaptive learningstrategy. This feature is designed to increase durability and provide consistent shift feel over the life of the vehicle. It is normal for a new transmission to shiftfirmly. This operation is considered normal and will not affect the function durability of the transmission. Once the vehicle is at operating temperature it may takeseveral shifts at the same operating condition for the transmission to properly adapt. Over time the adaptive learning process will fully update transmissionoperation. The more varied the driving habits, speed and torque, the longer it may take to adapt, but the more complete the process will be.

When the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, the transmission must “re-learn” its adaptive strategy. As a result of this, the transmission mayshift firmly. This is considered normal and transmission operation will fully update to its optimum shift feel.

Truck Engines cont’d4.5L Power Stroke® V-6 Turbo Diesel 24VEngine (Ford LCF)The 4.5L Power Stroke V-6 turbo diesel engine is a directinjection engine built for Ford by Navistar and is standardequipment on all Ford LCF models. The 4.5L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel engine incorporates anumber of advanced technologies, including:• Engine design — direct injection 4-valves-per-cylinder with

cast iron block and heads. It uses an overhead valve (OHV)arrangement with hydraulic lifters for valve actuation. Theengine operates quietly due to the use of electrohydraulicinjectors, the robust cast iron construction and the locationof the timing gears at the rear of the engine

• Fuel Delivery — the hydraulic rail fuel injection system usesGeneration-2 electrohydraulic injectors to maintain lowlevels of engine noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)

• Dual-stage Turbo Design — uses a two-stage, exhaust-driven turbocharger to increase incoming air density forincreased engine power. The first stage of the turbochargerprovides good low-speed response since it is able to“spool-up” quickly at relatively low engine speed, while thesecond stage provides enhanced power at highway speed

• Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) — helps loweremissions by reintroducing cooled exhaust gas back intothe cylinders which lowers the combustion temperatures

• Tow/Haul Mode — the transmission matched to this enginefeatures a Tow/Haul mode that is engaged/disengagedby a shifter-mounted button. Tow/Haul mode can helpincrease vehicle powertrain control when hauling heavyloads up or down steep grades by minimizing unnecessarygear shifts, maximizing the available engine torque andtaking advantage of engine braking

• Ease of Service — the engine layout helps provide easyaccess to routine maintenance items like the fuel and oilfilters which are mounted on top of the engine. The filters arealso of a cartridge design to help reduce the cost of disposal

Major features and benefits: • Robust cast iron block and cylinder head design for long

service life• Dual-stage turbocharger improves engine performance at

both low and high engine speeds• Electrohydraulic fuel injectors help provide quiet engine

operation• Top-engine-mounted fuel and oil filters for easy

maintenance

Major features and benefits: • The SOHC V-8 features one camshaft in each cylinder

head (at the top of each cylinder bank), eliminating theneed for pushrods

• The SOHC design provides a finer level of valve control • Deep-skirt engine block and low-friction internal components

for greater reliability and fuel economy • Silent-design chain cam drive contributes to durability

and helps reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) • Coil-on-plug ignition system design for high-mileage durability• Platinum-tipped spark plugs help provide sure-fire ignition

and contribute to a 100,000-mile scheduled tune-upinterval.(1) Platinum retains its conductive properties muchlonger than traditional spark plugs, thereby increasingreliability over the years and requiring less maintenance

• A fail-safe cooling system is designed to help protect theengine from potential damage due to a loss of coolant. If the engine overheats, it will automatically switch from 8-cylinder operation to alternating 4-cylinder operation. The vehicle will continue to operate, but with limited enginepower. This system allows the driver to travel a shortdistance to obtain service or to reach a service facility if the engine overheats. The distance that can be traveleddepends upon vehicle load, outside temperature and roadconditions

Truck Engines cont’d6.0L Power Stroke® V-8 Direct Injection TurboDiesel (E-Series and F-Series Super Duty) The 6.0L Power Stroke V-8 direct injection turbo diesel engineis available on E-Series and F-Series Super Duty® and is builtfor Ford by Navistar.

The 6.0L Power Stroke diesel incorporates a number of diesel engine innovations, including:

• Electronic Variable Response Turbocharging (EVRTTM):Delivers turbo boost over a wide range of enginerevolutions for steep grade climbing, high-altitudeperformance and towing. EVRT employs a set of vanes thatautomatically adjust to optimize the airflow within the turbo

• Tow/Haul Mode: The powertrain features a Tow/Haulmode that, once activated, can help increase a driver’sfeeling of control when towing large loads up and downsteep grades and automatically minimizes shifts andmaximizes available torque. Upon descent, the Tow/Haulmode utilizes engine braking to help extend brake life andimprove driver control

• Hydraulic Rail Fuel Injection: Fuel injectors are actuated by a high-pressure hydraulic rail system that generatesinjection pressures up to 26,000 psi. The high-pressure fuel is quickly atomized as it is released into thecombustion chamber to help ensure a clean and efficientcombustion event

• Exhaust-Gas Recirculation (EGR): Cooled exhaust gases arerecirculated back into the combustion chamber, loweringthe burn temperature of the combustion event and, as aresult, reducing oxides of nitrogen (NOx), while optimizingperformance and fuel economy

• Ease of Maintenance: The oil filter is located on top of theengine, so it can be easily removed. An innovativelydesigned oil cartridge, similar in concept to a printercartridge, keeps oil self-contained during a filter changeand the engine free of dripping oil during routinemaintenance

Major features and benefits:

• Robust cast iron block and cylinder head design for longservice life

• Turbocharger enhances engine performance by forcing adenser air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber

• Electrohydraulic injectors for quiet operation

• Top-mounted oil and fuel filters for easy maintenance

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) 2007 F-Series Super Duty vehicles built with the 6.0L PowerStroke® diesel engine have a “carryover” 2006 style engineand are not required by federal mandate to use the UltraLow Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel. Until ULSD (15 ppm [parts permillion] sulfur) is available in October 2006, all diesel fuelpumps selling Low Sulfur Diesel (LSD) (500 ppm sulfur) mustuse labels required by the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) beginning June 1, 2006. The labels for these pumpsstate: “WARNING: Federal law prohibits use in model year2007 and later highway vehicles and engines.” This is notthe case for 2007 vehicles with the carryover 2006 engines, therefore both Low Sulfur and Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuelscan be used in these vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions About ULSD

Can my 2007MY Super Duty and earlier model diesel trucksrun on ULSD?Yes. There are no restrictions from using ULSD.

Can 2007MY Super Duty diesel engines run on Low SulfurDiesel (LSD)?Yes. Although LSD may not be available in some areas as theindustry switches to ULSD.

Will the new 2008MY Super Duty be able to use LSD?No, the EPA regulation prohibits this. 2008MY Super Dutydiesels must use ULSD.

Electronically Controlled 5-Speed AutomaticOverdrive Transmission (Ranger) Transmission code 5R55E

Major features and benefits:• Uses “swap-shift” technology• The second gear’s precise gear ratios improve the vehicle’s

ability to accelerate, climb hills, tow and operate off-road• The 5-speed automatic transmission electronically controls the

shift feel by using an adaptive learning strategy. This feature isdesigned to increase durability and provide consistent shift feelover the life of the vehicle. It is normal for a new transmissionto shift firmly. This operation is considered normal and will notaffect function durability of the transmission. Once the vehicleis at operating temperature, it may take several shifts at thesame operating condition for the transmission to properlyadapt. Over time, the adaptive learning process will fullyupdate transmission operation. The more varied the drivinghabits, speed and torque, the longer it may take to adapt, butthe more complete the process will be

• When the battery is disconnected or a new batteryinstalled, the transmission must learn its adaptive strategy. As a result of this, the transmission may shift firmly. Thisoperation is considered normal and will fully updatetransmission operation to its normal shift feel
