Joseph was anointed to become a successful leader and in his own strength told everyone how great he would become. His brothers became envious and resenul and sold him to slavery where he had to lean on God for many years to build the character that God would use in a mighty way for the rest of his life. When Joseph finally achieved freedom, he was a completely different person in character and was able to lead with great wisdom. There are many more examples of biblical stories where character growth has been the most essenal element in gaining success. This allows us to make some conclusions to help our children be successful in life. For a start, children need to focus on building characters that will be trusted, loved and respected in the future. They should also learn how to serve others and make wise decisions. But by far the most important is that they learn to love God. We can do many things on our own and gain some material or personal gain, but true success can be found when we embrace our creator and establish a personal relaonship with Him. The character that this will build guarantees success.

Hillcrest Christian College is an interdenominational ministry of Reedy Creek Baptist Church and is operated by Hillcrest Christian College Ltd.

PRINCIPAL, JEFF DAVIS

I have recently been reading some literature on how to succeed in life; a premise we often take for granted and spend little time truly researching and thinking about.

When we take a worldly perspective on this issue we are often left conned by the belief

that fame, fortune, money and material possessions are essential to the success of one’s life. More and more this is becoming a mute argument as we become aware of the terrible state that many people live in and our relative life of comfort far outweighs those of millions and millions of people. We can often forget that thousands of children die every day due to lack of food and poor hygiene and lack of basic health care. We forget how lucky we really are.

One of the things that has resonated with me through this time of reading has been the true essence of success is directly related to our character. If we gain the perspective that what people think of us is our reputation, but what we are is our character, then we now have a benchmark to consider a point of success. If I look

to biblical characters and stories to find examples of character, it is easy to find examples of how Godly men and women have used this premise to succeed.

Moses spent the first 40 years of his life doing things for God his way. He spent the next 40 years learning to rely on God and to grow his character and then finally the last 40 years of his life using his character in God to helping others find their success. Joseph was anointed to become a successful leader and in his own strength told everyone how great he would become. His brothers became envious and resentful and sold him to slavery where he had to lean on God for many years to build the character that God would use in a mighty way for the rest of his life. When Joseph finally achieved freedom, he was a completely

different person in character and was able to lead with great wisdom.

There are many more examples of biblical stories where character growth has been the most essential element in gaining success. This allows us to make some conclusions to help our children be successful in life. For a start, children need to focus on building characters that will be trusted, loved and respected in the future. They should also learn how to serve others and make wise decisions. But by far the most important is that they learn to love God. We can do many things on our own and gain some material or personal gain, but true success can be found when we embrace our creator and establish a personal relationship with Him. The character that this will build guarantees success.

3JG & 3T torres strait island guest speakerAt the end of last term 3JG and 3T explored our neighbours in the far north, The Torres Strait Islands. Our guest speaker, Miss Allen, shared with the children what it was like to live and work on one of the islands. The students were fascinated by the differences in how they got their food, how few people lived on the island and how the climate affected their daily activities. The students created a Dhari, a Torres Strait Islander headdress using a variety of natural collage materials. The Dhari is the symbol that is found on the Torres Strait Islander flag and is usually worn in special ceremonies.

QLD CHAMP BASKETBALL SCHOOLS

During the first weekend of the September School Holidays, three Hillcrest Basketball teams travelled to Logan for the State Basketball Championships. This was an exciting time for our students who trained all year for the Tournament. Our Open Boys and Girls both competed in the Championship Division and proved to be an enormous force within Queensland Schools Basketball. Both teams ended out placing 5th in the State and 1st on the Gold Coast region. The results of the tournament also reflect how close the standard of all the schools, with the Open Girls defeating the eventual winners of the Tournament in the Pool stages. Additionally, our Development Boys displayed enormous potential and strength for the future of Hillcrest Basketball. These boys finished 4th in the Pool stages of the Tournament. Thank you to all the parents, students and staff for making this trip possible.

SYNERGYWhat an amazing collaboration of Art-forms was our Synergy event last Monday night 12th October. Guests were treated at the entrance with drinks and gourmet food prepared by the very talented Karen Scott and her team from The Hub. From here they entered the Secondary Courtyard under the sails which was transformed into an art gallery with literally 100s of pieces of student work on display. Congratulations to all of the art students who received awards on the evening. Following the exhibition, patrons were ushered into the MPC auditorium for a concert of thrilling vocal music from our 11 choirs under the direction of Jenny Moon and Nerida Rienecker. Over 420 students perfomed from Years 2 to 12 in their various groups, with them all coming together onstage for the finale song "How Can I Keep From Singing!" Congratulations to the major Choral Excellence award winner on the evening, Emily Suter from Year 12. Special mention also to Georgia Muller and Angus Weekes for their brilliant compering.

GOLD COAST EISTEDDFOD MUSICALE CONCERTCongratulations to our top excellence choir, "Bel Canto" for their performance at the Musicale winners concert at the Gold Coast Arts Centre on Sunday. Once again the girls represented Hillcrest superbly.

DANCE SUCCESSESCongratulations to Year 11 student DANIELLE ARCHER who was recently selected as one of to top performing Royal Academy of Dance students in Queensland, to perform at the “RAD Queensland, 80th Anniversary Gala” in Brisbane on the 12th September 2015. While she loved the opportunity to dance with some amazingly talented dancers, the highlight of the evening was receiving personal well wishes before her performance from Li Cunxin (Mao’s Last Dancer), Artistic Director Queensland Ballet and Vice President RAD.Also Congratulations to KAELA TAPPER from 4p. Kaela auditioned recently for the Brisbane City Youth Ballet’s upcoming production of The

Magic Toyshop and was accepted. The ballet will be performed on 18 & 19 December (selling out fast) at The Conservatorium Theatre at Griffith University, Southbank. Tickets can be purchased from Qtix.

2016 MUSICAL: Seussical the musicalWe are very please to announce that we have secured the rights to perform "Seussical" the musical in May 2016. Students in Yrs 6-9 in 2016 can apply to be a part of this larger than life production. Application packs are available from Performing Arts reception, and JLC reception from this week. "Oh, the thinks you can think" when Dr. Seuss's best-loved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! The writers have brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination--Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Who's, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge--not only must he protect the Who's from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.Seussical is fun for the whole family! Performers of all ages will be excited to portray the characters from the familiar Dr. Seuss fables. The Performing Art department is brimming with excitement at staging Seussical in 2016, and we encourage all students interested in the show to apply.
