Hillcrest Christian College is an interdenominational ministry of Reedy Creek Baptist Church and is operated by Hillcrest Christian College Ltd.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL, JEFF DAVIS

WARNING AGAINST IDLENESS

"In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked

night and day, labouring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” 2 Thessalonians 3:6-10

In today's western society, many young people, have failed to be taught the necessity that 'actions lead to outcomes'. In some cases, we find that there is an air of entitlement in their attitude rather than a servant-hearted mindset. We cannot blame the students for this misconception for, as adults, we allow this mindset to prevail and, in doing so, rob our children of the abundant joy that they could receive by being more disciplined and giving in their approach to life. We need to consider the example of Jesus, who was not a drop out. He worked as a carpenter, using his hands, prior to his ministry commencing.

The apostle Paul made tents for a living, while he carried on the work that God had assigned him, and there are many examples of other biblical leaders who made their livelihood outside of their ministry.

As Christians, we should seek to emulate this example, wherever possible. We should never assume that we are entitled to a weekly salary or payment for a job unless we actually do it to the best of our ability. It is with this integrity mindset that we will achieve success.

I commend all families to take the time to instruct your children in the virtues of a hard days' work and particularly the importance of developing a giving mindset. For without this characteristic in our society, it will not be long until we eliminate the perception of community that we hold very dear to our hearts at Hillcrest.

Year 12 students are midway through Term 2, traditionally

known as the busiest time of year. In the next 6 weeks, please keep our students in your prayers as they are required to complete two or three assessment pieces in all subjects. As a school, we offer support to all families struggling at this time and ask that you contact us should you require ideas and strategies for students, who may be under pressure, to assist them in maximising their performance.

I would like to acknowledge the amazing work of Jeremy Williamson and our Performing Arts team with the upcoming production of our school musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. Already, we have sold out all performances and are well on the way to selling out the additional Saturday matinee performance. Students have been incredible in their dedication to developing this production and I am very confident that all members of the community, who attend, will be amazed at the level of professionalism on show.

COLLEGE NEWSNAPLANThis week, we have undertaken the annual NAPLAN testing. Students have been well prepared for this testing, not through the focus on NAPLAN, but through great teaching in the classroom. Hillcrest has had a long history of performing exceptionally well in this testing and we are hopeful that this will continue in 2015. Results for this year's tests will be available earlier than usual and I will communicate with you all of the data once it becomes available for publication.

INTERNATIONAL: IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Over the next few newsletters, the International Department Section will put the spotlight on different International Students and give you an opportunity to get to know little snippets of information about these wonderful students who add so much to our community. This week, one of the present International School Captains from Hong Kong, MING TAI KAM (who we all know as CALEB KAM), has kindly agreed to share about himself, why he came to Hillcrest, and what the journey has been like so far.

MING TAI KAM (CALEB KAM) HONG KONG

I came to study in Australia because I wanted to do a Pilot Licence for a very long period of time. Today, I'm holding a Student Pilot Licence and I'm about 10 hours to my first goal: Private Pilot License.

I chose Hillcrest because Hillcrest is a Christian School and is connected to Reedy Creek Baptist Church, where I now attend.

I started studying at Hillcrest on the 15th of August, 2013. My first lesson was Physics with Mr Fesuk, doing a practical lesson on electrical circuits. In the beginning, I was a bit nervous since I had to make new friends and speak in English, as my first language was Cantonese. Although English wasn't my best language at that time, I got used to it really quickly, about 2 to 3 weeks from my first day at school.

After almost two years at the school, I can say Hillcrest is a fantastic school. The staff helped me with choosing subjects and my

pathway to University and are very friendly and caring.

I am thankful for MR FESUK, my "First Teacher" in Year 10, my Biology teacher in Year 11 and my Year 12 PC, Chemistry and Physics teacher. He helped me a lot on all sciences, and made me a better "Scientist" by teaching me how to write a "Scientific Report". I am also thankful for the International Department for this great opportunity to be the International Captain for 2015, and their help in both my mainstream subjects and English as Second Language.

My goal is to do Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Bond University, and help future International Students at Hillcrest in their studies.

art excellence

The Tuesday afternoon 'Art Excellence' class is off to great start this term, with students creating some unique textured and patterned papers as a base for future drawings. In lessons to come, the boys and girls will be learning techniques to enable them to 'see' with an artist's eye and develop better drawing skills.

They will also experiment with different drawing mediums and styles. I look forward to sharing photos of their finished work at the end of the term! JAN LAWNIKANIS

DEBATING

Congratulations to our Year 10 Intermediate B Debating Team (SHAKIRRA ENRIGHT, CHANTEL SPENCE, JEMIMA ROZE, EBONY COURTNEY-EMAN) and our Senior B Debating team (SHANNON LABUSHAGNE, EMMA TAYLOR, TAYLA MEEHAN, SHAKIRRA ENRIGHT) in the last two weeks won their debates.

Both teams were the negative with topics 'Australia's youth have a voice that is heard' and 'Today’s Youth are too Egocentric' and performed exceptionally well.

Last night's event, hosted by Hillcrest Christian College, was a wonderful addition to our College Open Day tours.

JUNIOR LEARNING COMMUNITYPREP BEACH DAY

Let’s go surfin’ now, everybody surfin’ now, party on our Prep Beach Day! Woohoo!

On Tuesday 28 April, our Preppies came to school decked out in beach gear complete with beach towels and sunnies.

As part of our learning about the seasons, we imagined it was a hot Summer’s day and we were at the beach.

Our day included splashing in ‘sea foam’, hula hooping, the Limbo, posing with a ‘shark’ and surfboards and creating mixed-media beach scenes.

A highlight of the day was our beach picnic outside the Hub eating our tuckshop lunches on our beach towels.

YEAR 2 MINI BEAST DAYThis term, Year 2 have become entomologists, studying the wonderful world of mini beasts. They have been developing their report writing skills while learning about a variety of arachnids, insects and amphibians. Did you know that the biggest spider in the world is bigger than your dinner plate, and that the most poisonous frog is the size of a paperclip but has enough poison to kill ten adults? We are glad that these particular mini beasts don’t live in Australia!

Students are excited about their up and coming MINI BEAST DAY where they will present reports of their chosen mini beast, and invite their parents to come and view their wonderful work. It has been such a fun start to the term, and Year 2 are looking forward to many more exciting learning experiences in the coming weeks.

YEAR 5 FUNDRAISING FOR COMPASSION/EFFECTIVE AID

It was that time of the year again prior to Easter when 5P did their annual odd-job-a-thon fundraising drive for the sponsor children of the College. Previous years had the goal of $20 per student and this year was no different. We aim to cover the year’s cost through this one fundraising venture where the children volunteer their time and creativity by doing chores, tasks etc to fundraising.

The children always come up with some very creative ways with many performing massages, buying then selling on chocolates, doing extra chores, hosting their own garage sale, selling cupcakes around the neighbourhood and even shovelling animal excrement at their own or the local farm! Their enthusiasm this year was contagious as the dollar total rose each week and over Easter.

As the money started to return and the job sheets got handed in,

it became apparent that not only had the children all done tasks, quite a few also chose to sacrifice their own pocket money, savings or birthday money which was very touching. It shows the care and compassion the children have for others beyond their immediate surroundings. When it was all totalled up, the original goal of $20 per student was not only achieved but surpassed to be $52 per student over a class total of $1300! This is sensational for a class of only 25 students, well done 5P.

Whilst all the children did well for whatever their fund total was, special mention has to be made for 3 girls who raised over $100 and 2 of those over $200, NATALIE TEASDALE, ANGELA TURNER and CHELSEA JONES. Well done girls and 5P, I am so proud of you all.

YEAR 6 NEWSThis term Year 6 has been looking at Immigration to Australia and our countries of birth. Year 6 was given an assignment to find out about immigration.

The first task was to conduct a survey on all the students in Year 6. The survey was conducted to find out where in the world we were born. However we didn’t stop at finding out what country we were born in, we decided to look at the Australian states and how many people were born in them. The survey ended and we received some interesting results. We found that 85% of the 79 students surveyed were born in Australia and 61% of the students born in Australia were born in Queensland. However these high results for Australia and Queensland were expected as the survey has been conducted in Queensland.

The next task we had to do was to construct a pie and column graph, the graphs showed the massive difference in the countries of birth. We found that only 6% of the students surveyed were born in England and we estimated that a lot more would have been from England.

Next we had to construct two maps, one of the maps was a choropleth

(each country was coloured different depending on the amount of people born in it). The other map was basically a colour coded map with the legend showing a colour and then the name of the country. Then we had to colour in the country with the same colour. When we did the choropleth map on the Australian states, we found that all the states had at least one person born in them except for South Australia and the Northern Territory. We also found that all the states to the East had a very low or none of the students born in them. Also, the states below New South Wales only had one student each born in them.

After all these tasks were completed we had to write a paragraph on all our results. However this was not the end of our assignment, well no way near the end.

JLC SHORT COURSES

Each week in the Crazy Sevens Mathematics short courses, enrichment students have been taught a different problem solving strategy. This has enabled students to build upon their knowledge and have an opportunity to practice their skills and accuracy with high order thinking questions.

Some of these strategies include calculation, working backwards, guess and check, spatial skills, identification of patterns, logic and algebra. The students have been encouraged to investigate and understand the problem then decide on their own strategy or plan for solving the problem. After reflecting on their answers they have been encouraged to share their different solutions.

Page 5: Hillcrest Christian College Newsletter 15 May 2015

“In the smaller group we can use different strategies to solve different types of challenging Maths problems.”

ALEX N (6G)

“It stretches our brains as we have to problem solve and use different types of strategies.”

ALEX M (6C)

“This is unboring maths.”MATTHEW S (1J)

“This maths is lots of fun.” RAJ S (1J)

“I like working backwards to get the answer.”

ISAAC L (1S)

“I’m learning new things.” LEVI H (1J)

NUMERACY COACHING ACADEMY This year the Junior Learning Community is investing time into developing Numeracy pedagogy to be in line with 21st century learning and teaching. “Numeracy is not synonymous with mathematics, but the two are clearly interrelated. All numeracy is underpinned by some mathematics; hence school mathematics has an important role in the development of young people’s numeracy.”

Within the framework, teachers are participating in a range of professional development sessions to their enhance skills to meet the needs of classrooms today. This term a variety of classes across the Junior Learning Community have begun trialling numeracy rotations. As part of these rotations, children are exposed to a range of learning opportunities catering for their specific interests and needs. New numeracy resources have been purchased and the children have been using these to complement their learning in an engaging way.

In Year Two, the children learn through numeracy rotations four times a week. Year Two students are highly engaged in a fraction matching game below. BOSTON from 2C says, “We have so much fun doing rotations. I like doing it with my friends in small groups. We all have fun learning about maths.”

In Year Four, the children enjoy participating in activities such as Mathletics, topic related games and small group time with their teacher during numeracy rotations. LEAH commented, “Rotations are fun because MISS ALLEN comes up with fun activities to do. We play really fun games but my favourite part of rotations is Mathletics on the laptops.”

LIBRARY MAKERSPACE

When we opened the new Library nearly two years ago I was hoping that we might be able to try some new ideas out. I did know that our new library should reflect contemporary educational practices and it seemed that this new space shouted out “Do some exciting things in here!”

So we began with one table, plenty of paint, paint brushes and paper. Our students flocked in and since then we have built our MAKERSPACE. Every day students arrive to design, build, paint and sew amazing items. We have made a pirate ship and a medieval castle along with a four wheeled robot that delivered a message across the library to MRS ARCHER. We have a digital microscope that a young scientist from Year 1 used to look more closely at the spider she had found in her garden.

The Makerspace is usually open in the morning and at breaks and most afternoons.

INTRODUCING MRS TOMS

Hi! I am EMILY TOMS. I am married to a funny man called Sam and we have two young energetic daughters; Ariel is 6, Katie is 5. As a family we have been attending Reedy Creek Baptist Church for the last 9 years and have been heavily involved in the children’s and youth ministries. As for my role at Hillcrest, I am the Junior Learning Community Chaplain and have been thoroughly enjoying getting to know the awesome students within the school.

I have the privilege of being involved in running GIG on a Wednesday afternoon. We just had our first week at GIG which involved a time of praising God and an opportunity for the students to get to know me a little. I then introduced the theme for the term which is ‘Standing Firm for the Term’ essentially ensuring you have your feet grounded in Christ preventing other things and people to knock you over.

A Cry for NepalDon’t lose hope and stay strong,

We are here for you, we hear your song.

You still have a country standing tall,

One quake will not make it fall.

From the rubble we will rise,

Disaster only makes you wise.

We will pray for the lives that have been lost,

We feel your pain we know there is no greater cost.

I know you feel broken and small,

But we will always be here for you Nepal

AMAZING ARTWORK

Students in Year 9 art are currently doing "pencil sketching" as their art form. Here are some of the amazing pieces of work they are creating.

They are working towards a public exhibition of some of their works on the College campus later this year.

YEAR 9 & 10 ART EXCURSION TO GOMA

The Year 9 and 10 Art students have just visited the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane to look at the current exhibition.

Some of the pieces have really inspired them to come back to the College and try some different perspectives.

Next time you are on campus have a look in the Hub at the new Art Gallery which is exhibiting some of the recently completed pieces from the Year 7 to 10 students.

YEAR 12 'LEGAL EAGLES' MAKE STIRRING SPEECHES IN QUEENSLAND YOUTH PARLIAMENTFour of Hillcrest’s Year 12 Legal Studies class, ATALIA ANSELINE-MANTON, HARRY POWER, SINEAD COUTTS and JESSAMY TREDINNICK, had the wonderful opportunity to sit in the seats of Queensland’s parliamentarians, quite literally, by taking part in the annual Queensland Legal Studies Youth Parliament in the Legislative Assembly chamber in Brisbane City on Friday, 1 May.

Each of our students did Hillcrest proud by making a passionate one minute speech to the Youth Parliament about a controversial Queensland issue and were then congratulated and presented with certificates by the Queensland Member for Mudgeeraba, MS. ROS BATES.

ATALIA’S speech addressed the issue, which was the subject of a hypothetical proposed law (known as a Bill), of whether or

not Queensland’s major political parties should be forced by law to nominate women for 50% of the seats at future state elections.

HARRY’S speech dealt with another aspect of the hypothetical Bill, which sought to encourage more males to become teachers in Queensland state schools by not having to pay any university fees if they stayed working for Education Queensland for five years after graduating from their Education studies.

SINEAD and JESSAMY then fired up the Youth Parliament with heartfelt pleas for politicians to act more civilly in the way they treat each other and for cruelty to greyhounds to be banned, respectively.

All of the youth parliamentarians agreed afterwards that it was an excellent experience which was almost surreal in terms of their having graced the hallowed halls and seats of the Queensland Parliament!

2015 BOND UNI NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MOOTING COMPETITION

Hillcrest’s Year 11 ‘Legal Eagles’ Perform with Distinction in the 2015 Bond University National High School Mooting Competition

Hillcrest’s 2015 Senior Mooting Team, consisting of Year 11 Legal Studies students, KATE VAN BRUGGEN, MELISSA RUGBUR and MILLY KARGER, competed with distinction in the annual Bond University National Mooting Competition on Thursday, 30 April.

So, ‘what’s a moot?’, you may ask. It’s a mock appeal from a hypothetical court hearing to a

higher court (the Bond University Mock Court of Appeal) in which two student barristers from each school must give ten minute submissions on behalf of their client to a panel of two law lecturers. If that’s not daunting enough, the young barristers are regularly interrupted by probing questions from the law lecturers about how Queensland Court of Appeal or High Court judgments relate to the appeal case.

Although we won’t find out for a couple of weeks whether Hillcrest has won the Gold Coast region of the competition, the judges (law lecturers) were glowing in their praise of the Hillcrest students at the

end of the moot, with comments including the following:

“You have set an excellent standard of mooting for the other high school student mooters in this competition.”

“I would never have known you had not mooted before.”

“Fantastic responses to questions!”

“Excellent summary of arguments.”

“Your knowledge of the law was exceptional.”

“A perfect manner, tone and volume.”

“You navigated very well through

the key law, issues and submissions, as well as timing your overall submissions superbly.”

“Well done! A fantastic team effort!”

Special thanks are due to a former Hillcrest student, KEITH SYPOTT, for his wonderful dedication to coaching the team. KEITH was a Year 12 Legal Studies prize winner four years ago and has just completed two degrees with Honours in Law and International Relations at Bond University in a little over three years.

PERFORMING ARTS

HILLCREST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER | 9

INSTRUMENTAL & VOCAL LESSONS

Each week, hundreds of our Hillcrest students learn with one of our specialist music teachers. Overwhelmingly, these co-curricular lessons are the biggest influencing factor to a students success in Classroom music, Choirs and Bands. However, did you know that achieving at certain grade levels through formal AMEB or Trinity-Guildhall examinations, can contribute significantly to a student's exit rank at the end of Year 12? Many students use there music exams to strategically enable University entrance in this way.

Apart from this, Music lessons are excellent for students in many ways beyond the classroom. They teach students significant character attributes such as self-discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and creativity to name a few. This interesting article in the link provided below shares some statistics on the benefits of a great music education.

A gentle reminder. If your child will be absent from their music lesson, please advise their instrument teacher or the Performing Arts Department, via email or phone in advance.

http://www.childrensmusicworkshop.com/advocacy/factsandstatistics/

We are blessed at Hillcrest to have a number of very experienced and talented Music Tutors that visit the school each week to teach our students. It is fantastic to see how many of our students are receiving the benefits that come from learning an instrument.

Some of our tutors are hosting studio concerts over the coming few weeks. These will all be held in the theatre and will give all of their students an opportunity to perform in a concert.

Students will learn what it is like to control their nerves, cope with the pressure of live performance and enjoy sharing the music they make with an encouraging audience.

These are skills that are honed and developed over time and

with multiple experiences. Even the youngest of students at the beginning of their musical journey can engage in these performances and I know their families will enjoy seeing the progress they have made so far this year.

Music teachers and their students often form a very special bond as they spend one on one time together each week and during these concerts, it is clear to see the trust that exists between students and their teachers.

If your child is interested in learning an instrument with one of our tutors, please contact the performing arts office.

GUEST HOLLYWOOD STUNT ACTOR - MR JAMES THOMASLast week we surprised the cast by bringing in Professional Hollywood stunt actor, JAMES THOMAS to work with the cast. It was an amazing experience for the team. James has appeared in the Fast and the Furious, and Pirates of the Caribbean movies, as well as starring in episodes of Glee! James had heard about our upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar, and being a great guy simply offered to give us a hand! James worked with the students on safe stunt fighting techniques plus a few hair-raising other tricks you will see in the show.

While the dedication of the students and staff throughout Term One has produced some exceptional results in many competition settings, Terms Two and Three will be focusing on physical refinement and team cohesion. As a result, the following training schedule will be in place for the remainder of Terms Two and Three (subject to minor change with coach availabilities).

GIRLS ONLY GYM

The Hillcrest gym will be open for a girls only session every Tuesday morning between 7:00-8:00am. All female students from Years 7-12 are welcome to attend. Please contact the sports office if you have any questions.
