Many of my beliefs may change over the years, but there are a few things I can see myself standing by for life. I’ll
start with a story: I saw the soul of a man in its purity. His spirit spoke to mine through a simple gaze and a few small words. I was awakened, and the light of my life consumed me.
A middle-aged man, obviously inebriated, approached my friend and me in the park and spilled his sorrows to complete strangers. Through some Spanish and broken English and the lazy drawl known to drunkenness, my friend and I, though defensive at first, began to sympathize as we internalized his words. His son had suffered an early death and left his family and loved ones to mourn. This man was visibly, tangibly overflowing with anguish. Not long afterwards, a friend of his, who also appeared to have been self-medicating with alcohol, approached our table. Already nervous, but open to this experience, my friend and I calmly welcomed him and offered a hand in helping him grieve. After listening to the men for a few moments and giving a small word of encouragement and an invitation to my church in hopes

that they could find better help—food, clothing, counselling resources, etc.—the most profound experience I have ever shared with a stranger graced my existence: Anthony, the second man to approach our table, pierced me with a look so powerful I felt it in my stomach and said to me, “I want to see you again.”
Through the influences I’ve had studying Theology, and moments such as the one in the park, I have come to call myself one of the homeless. I believe I am one of them and I stand with them, bridging the gap. kd
In those six small words, beyond their primary message, I felt a genuine, holy connection with this man that was more human than anything else I had experienced. Statements such as “be the change,” and “love your neighbour as yourself,” which I had previously under appreciated, melded together in that moment and birthed my new realization of the depth of the bond I have with others as brothers and sisters struggling through the difficulties and pleasures of life.
In those six small words, I heard that man tell me that in a matter of minutes. Because of a genuine interest in his condition, I was able to influence him on a deep and soulful level. I was hooked. I believe in positive human interaction, in supportive communities, and in really seeing each other at full-value, not face-value.
That moment and others that have been built upon it clings to my spirit and feeds my love for the materially, spiritually, and socially poor of the world. Listening to stories and experiences, sharing my own, and transforming together with the people I meet has truly made me a lover of humanity; and it has become my religion.
I believe it is possible to find a kind of simple, pure excellence among those who have nothing-- a kind of gateway to another world found in the type of care and interdependence that can be seen only in groups that have mere basics. Though beauty can be found here, there is no denying the painful, difficult, wearisome places of homelessness. Hunger, disease, and violence plague the poor. It is my goal and my desire to protect, heal, and uplift these people, to make their suffering known and through the best means possible, to alleviate their burdens. This is what makes me come alive.

Hometown heroesAct of LoveA small group of Hill Country women implement an idea to help a hurting community.
the recent fertilizer plant explosion in west, texas has altered lives, challenged a small Texas town and inspired others to make a difference
12
The Texas Wrap Girls, a group of distributors for “It Works” Skinny Wraps were sponsoring a “wrap party” they had already planned before the West, Texas tragedy occurred.
One of the associate distributors, Robyn Bentke, got the idea to utilize the event to inspire do-nations for a relief effort. Tina Matlock and Tara LaMontia began to organize the group.
The plan was to get a full size Penske truck and fill it with canned goods, clothing, water, blankets and more while introducing people to their planned meeting in Brenham. It was on! Tina rallied 10 radio stations to announce the plan and the event was a huge success. The Texas Wrap Girls began at 9am and didn’t finish taking donations and applying wraps until 9 that night. The truck was filled; and what started out being a party to help a few folks look and feel better about themselves, ended up providing much needed supplies to help dozens in a time of great need. Given the short time in which this event came together and how well it was executed, is a testament to how much can get done when a few deter-mined women with love in their hearts come together on a mission.

In 1897, a musicologist and music critic for the New York Tribune named Hen-
ry Krehbeil wrote a book titled, “How to Listen to Music.” Henry said it was for the “untaught lovers of the art.”
Perhaps, that is what many of us may be, untaught lovers of the art…of life. And,
just as Krehbeil’s eloquent explanation of each instrument’s role in the resulting har-mony gave his readers a newly found inter-est in the concerto, so too, can we become better listeners of our daily experience.
When we listen to the world around us, we see things that suddenly have
brighter colors of clarity. That is, their place in our life has more importance and appreciation. Similar to a finely tuned musical performance, each day can bring the sound of highs and lows, providing meaningful contrast to the entire recital. It’s the difference between merely hearing the confusing sounds of an array of instru-ments and actually living in our personal concert. The art of listening is just that: an art. It must be practiced to be learned. Becoming the listener who knows what to listen for serves to amplify our apprecia-
tion for the music. Mere appearances no longer get in the way. It’s amazing what we can see when we close our eyes. I’ve heard it said that to truly be happy, you must have three things: Something to do, some-one to love and something to look forward to. Something to do refers to purpose. When you have a purpose you have the satisfaction of knowing that you matter; that you are giving back; and that you are making a difference. Someone to love is someone to care about. Whether it’s your partner, family, or friend, love of another soul transcends all the names we give our relationships. We are never without the
opportunity to direct our warmth toward another. And, sometimes “someone to love and care for” is our “something to do”. Something to look forward to can be whatever may give you joy in the future. Whether it’s climbing the highest mountain or just climbing into bed with a good book, the anticipation that you’ll soon be delighting in the event, no matter how simple, can make you smile with anticipation. All the while, we pray for those we care about, for those who are hurting, and for ourselves. We ask the God we believe in to give us strength and guidance. Yet, the greatest prayer we can offer Him is simply to say “thank you”. Thank you for the abundance of what matters most. Thank you for letting us feel the
goodness that surrounds us. Like Henry Krehbiel, we must become critics by his definition, “A critic’s job is to separate excellence from defect. He should excite curiosity, arouse interest, and pave the way to comprehension.”
That’s when we truly hear the symphony.
That’s how we listen to life. Sonny Melendrez

seeINg hIM through the eyes of a child
Every year at Christmas, we attend a local church
pageant which tells the story of Jesus from His birth through his resurrection. It is a spec-tacular event, with live animals and hundreds of cast members in realistic costumes. The Magi enter the huge auditorium riding llamas, descending the steps in pomp and majesty. Roman soldiers look huge and menacing in their costumes and makeup. Of all the years we have attend-ed, one stands out indelibly in my heart. It was the year we took our then three year old granddaugh-ter, Bailey, who loves Jesus. She was mes-merized throughout the entire play, not just watching, but involved as if she were a player. She watches as Jo-seph and Mary travel to the Inn; and is thrilled when she sees
the baby Jesus in His mother’s arms. Later, Jesus descends the steps riding a young donkey from the back of the auditorium depicting His triumphal en-try into Jerusalem. Bailey was ecstatic! As he neared our isle, Bailey began jumping up and down, screaming, “Jesus, Jesus! There’s Jesus!” Not just saying the words; but exclaiming them with every fibre of her being.
She alternated between screaming his name and
hugging us. “It’s Jesus. Look!” I thought she might actually pass out. Tears filled my eyes as I looked at
Jesus through the eyes of a child in love with
Him, seeing Him for the first time. How like the blind beg-gar screaming out in reckless
abandon, “Jesus, Jesus!”, afraid he might miss Him, not caring
what others thought. (Mark 10:46-52) This was so
much fun. Then came the arrest scene. On stage, the soldiers shoved and slapped Jesus as they moved
Him from the Gar-den of Gethsemane to
Pilate. Bailey responded as if she were in the crowd of women, with terror and anger. “Stop it!” She screamed. “Bad soldiers, stop it!” As I watched her reaction, I wished we had talked to her before the play. “Bailey it’s OK. They are just pretending.” “They are hurting Jesus! Stop it!” She stood in her seat reacting to each and every move. People around us at first smiled at her reaction, thinking “How Cute!”. Then they quit smiling and began watching her watch Him.

Bailey was now hysterical. “Stop it
soldiers. Stop it!”, she screamed. She must have
been wondering why all these people did nothing.
She then began to cry instead of scream. “Jesus, Oh, Jesus!”
In a most powerful scene, the soldiers lead Jesus carrying
the cross down the steps of the auditorium from the back. They were yelling, whipping, and curs-ing at Jesus, who was bloodied and beaten. Bailey was now hysterical. “Stop it soldiers! Stop it!”, she screamed. She must have been wondering why all these people did nothing. She then began to cry instead of scream. “Jesus, Oh, Jesus!” People all around us began to weep as we all watched this devoted little dis-ciple see her Jesus beaten and killed as those first century disciples had. Going back and forth between her mother’s lap and mine for comfort, she was distraught. Cont on page 27

Bailey’s Jesus (cont. from p. 23)
I kept saying, “Bailey, it’s OK. Jesus is going to be OK. These are just people pretending to be soldiers. She looked at me like I was crazy. In my lap, we talked through the cross and burial. “Watch, Bailey, watch for Jesus!”
The tomb began to tremble and lightening flashed as the stone rolled away. A Super Bowl touchdown cheer couldn’t come close to matching this little one’s reaction to the resurrection. “Jesus! He’s OK, Mommy. It’s Jesus!” I prayed that she wasn’t going to be traumatized by this event, but that she would remember it. I shall never forget it. I shall never forget seeing His suffering, crucifixion and resurrection through the eyes of an innocent child.
Following the pageant, the actors all assembled in the foyer to be greeted by the audience. As we passed by some of the soldiers, Bailey screamed out; “Bad soldier. Don’t you hurt Jesus.”
The actor who portrayed Jesus was some distance away surrounded by well-wishers and friends. Bailey broke away from us and ran toward him, wrapping herself around his legs, holding on for dear life. He hugged her and said, “Jesus loves you.” He patted her to go away. She would not let go. She kept clinging to Him, laughing and calling His name. She wasn’t about to let go of her Jesus.
I think God in heaven stopped whatever was going on that day and made all the angels watch Bailey.
“Now, look there! This is what I meant when I said, ‘Of such is the kingdom of heaven.’ ”

Pops! The doll-sized voice was barely
audible over the sound of the water-
fall at our pool. Pops. That has to be my
favorite word especially when it is spoken
by a princess. Well, not ‘a’ princess, The
Princess. Only four short letters on paper
but sometimes several syllables long when
the Princess smiles that little smile and
says… Pops. “Pops, it’s time for my swim-
ming blessings.” “Your what, sweetheart?”
“My swimming blessings. You said you
were going to give me swimming blessings…
and I’m here!”
I suppose that at four years old or so
it would be easy to confuse the word
lessons with blessings. And as it turned out,
blessings was the better of the two. The
Princess was blessed to be taught to swim
and Pops was blessed to have been the
teacher. Learning to swim, like driving a car
is one of those lessons in life that you never
forget how and when you learned. And
you never forget the one who taught you,
who brought a gift of knowledge that would
never run out.
As it turned out, it was I who was
about to receive a ‘blessing.’ We
kept the lessons short, just ten or so
minutes. Little people don’t always
have much span of attention. Our first
lessons were spent learning to hold our
breath under water. As a reward the
Princess got tossed into the air, making a
big splash just like her bubba. (Texan for
‘brother.’)
Bobbing to the surface our little
brown granddaughter would
push her hair away from those blue,
blue eyes, giggle as only a little
one can do, and then say, “Do me
again, Pops! Do me again!” And so
we had our afternoon swimming
blessings until one late afternoon
the Princess seemed to have lost all
sense of focus. She wanted to blow
right past her blessing and head for
deep water.
Watch me, Pops! Watch
me! The little sprite with the
pointy pink lips motioned for me to
step aside.

“Come on, Princess! Let’s go over what we’ve been studying and then I’ll watch you do whatever you want to do. But right now we need to focus.”
“No, Pops. Watch me! Watch me!” “Okay, fine. What is it that you want to do?”
Without a word my bullet shaped Princess dove into the water and swam right past her amazed, amused, and yes, even mystified Pops.
I don’t know how she learned to swim although in later years it was me who taught her. And hopefully her recollection will be the same. But just between you and me, I’ll remember the whole story about the day that Pops received a swimming blessing of his own. And now I will share that blessing with you: sometimes the best thing a teacher or parent or boss can do is to get out of the way and let the blessing come to you.

oing to the Texas Hill Country is the preferred destination of multitudes who are not from here. If you are reading
this, you are probably a resident or visitor. When I was in the real estate business (many, many years ago) I received a phone call from a delightful couple who had been doing their due diligence researching the country for a place to retire. A place to call home. A place to stay. Keith had been in the photography business for many years. The call was from Concord, Massachusetts.
I’m always a little curious as to why people do what they do, especially as it relates to where they intend to spend the rest of their lives. I didn’t know at the time that I was discovering two new lifelong friends. In this brief first phone conversation, they made it clear that Kerrville, Texas was going to be their new home and to please find a suitable property.
At this point I assumed they had either vacationed here many times or had family in the area, so I asked the typical question for my profession: “ What do you two like most about Kerrville?”
Their answer? “Not really sure just yet. Never been there before.” My next query was simple, “So, family in the area?” They simply replied “Nope. Not a soul.” They began to share with me all about their wonderful grown children. I finally asked the obvious: “Why Kerrville? Why my town?”
“Went to the library in Concord and found a book that told us about this wonderful area of Texas. Kerrville was right smack dab in the middle, so we figured that would be just fine.”
I found them their new place in the hills and it would take a lot of pages to describe to you the unique blessing of knowing Keith and Audrey Martin. Their love for one another and gracious spirits made my life and the lives of my wife and children richer.
Folks come to the Texas Hill Country for many reasons. Keith and Audrey came here because a book told them it was a nice place to live. -- Mike Simpson
