ccording to I - sport buoyancy aids are designed or swimmers, and they can bei I i i iused in protected waters with help near at hand. Their function is to support the paddler who findshimself outside his boat; they are not PFDs designed for non-swimmers and unconscious swimmers.
esides buoyant orce i.e. keeping the swimming person a loat buoyancy aids provide otherpossibilities of active rescue according to their equipment. Different types of buoyancy aids arefitted with chest harnesses, integrated harnesses, pockets, buckles and others according to theirpurpose and supposed use.
ow to c oose t e r g t uoyancy a
Sufficient buoyant force is the basic feature of each buoyancy aid, however the right size andunctionality are more important. irstly, decide what you need the buoyancy aid or. here are
di erent designs and equipment suitable or di erent areas o water activities.
Then you should choose the right design. Slight kayak paddlers prefer low cut designs, so theyarent hampered in their movement; someone pre ers classical cut with the same buoyant orce but
thinner oam. lso decide, whether you pre er a pull over the head vest or a jacket with a zipperor buckles.
Finally you should find the right size. It is recommended to try out at least two sizes of the chosendesign, tighten the waist, side, and shoulder straps properly and try whether your body movesreely and the buoyancy aid doesnt slide up over your head when you are sitting. It is ideal to sit into
a boat and put a spraydeck on. It is recommended to choose the better fitting size although thepaddlers weight is slightly over the stated weight range. Buoyancy aid must fit comfortably, allowfree movement, but it mustnt be swept off when you are swimming!
loating oam o the buoyancy aid contains closed air cells that can be destroyed by inadequatepressure, which leads to the oam loosing its buoyancy. here ore you shouldnt bend the buoyancyaid, nor use it as a seat or a cushion. Dr y it in the open air after each use and store it hung. Protect
the buoyancy aid from heat (over 50 C), dont dry it in a tumble drier nor on heaters. When dirty,
clean it with soap water and a so t brush. ever use chemical solvents nor wash it in a washingmachine, i you dont wish to destroy it completely.

Safety chest harness and its use
ome buoyancy aids can be itted with a sa ety chest harness. It is designed or sel -belaying duringrescue, and combined with a tow-line it can be used to pull a swimming person or a piece ofequipment to the bank.
t oesnt su st tute a c m ng arness an t sn t esgne or rappe ng
The harness features a safety quick-release buckle to be removed quickly from the buoyancy aid(possibly under some load) in case of emergency (when the stream pushes the rescuer under thewater, the pulled boat gets stuck and so on .
Therefore it is necessary to pull the harness correctly through the friction plate of the buckle andfasten the buckle properly. Otherwise its safety and quick release cannot be guaranteed!!! It is
strongly recommended to practise the rescue with the safety harness before you really need it.

The shoulders are padded with neoprene, which makes the buoyancyai warmer an protects rom bruises.
ront fastening by buckles makes the buoyancy aid easily put on andp ut o .
ront astening by a zipper makes t e buoyancy ai easily put on anput off.
ront pockets of different size and design are used to carry thenecessarry additional equipment, for example a knive, a carabiner, anenergy bar, a camera, and so on.
Chest harness with a safety buckle is used to rescue people andequipment. The buckle can be quickly opened and the harness relea-ses easily in case o any anger or t e rescuer.
Warm pockets for numb hands have their inner side made of warmabric. ey come in an y uring long journeys in col an win y

Waist strap tightening makes the buoyancy aid well fitting to the body,so it cannot slip over t e ea w en turning over. It is tig tene by
two buckles on sides.
aist cor tig tening makes t e buoyancy ai well itting to t e bo y,so it cannot slip over the head when turning over. It is tightened infront.
Side straps are sewed to neoprene pieces, so the sides remain flexi-ble even when tight, and the straps dont hurt.
Watering bladder pocket is designed to carry a watering bladder ofspecific volume. It is provided with a hose outlet.

How to choose a cag?Firstly, think of conditions and a type of boat you are going to use your cag in.Long cut cags are suitable for rafting, open canoe touring, and seakayaking.Waist cut cags fit spraydecks better making them perfect to use in whitewaterboats. hen, choose abric thickness and type o a neck seal and cu s; all
the elements have an in luence on water resistance o the cag. ry cags areprovided with latex cuffs and neck seals allowing them to seal perfectly; however
they are liable to damage.
How to maintain cags and trousers?Paddling cags and trousers made of layered fabrics should be dried after eachuse by hanging in the air. If necessary, use soap water and a sponge or a
so t brush to clean them. ever wash in a washing machine or use chemicalsolvents. ever expose to high temperature. irect sun doesnt do any good toused materials.
Pay special attention to the latex cuffs and seals. Use a sharp knife or scissors to modi y their size according to your need. ake sure the cut is smooth without any tears, so the latex wont rip up. ut on and take o the latex seals andcu s care ully. atch out or sharp objects such as rings, watches, and soon, that could damage them. Protect seals and cuffs form direct sun. High
temperatures degrade the latex. Always have rotten cuffs and seals exchanged.

How to choose a spraydeckChoose your spraydeck according to its use. Neoprene spraydecks are tight enough to be used on white water, but they must perfectly fit a cockpit and a paddlers body, so they are usually a bit tough to put on. Nylonspraydecks are lighter and they can be easily put on thanks to their adjustable cockpit and tube elastic cords,
so they fit different boats and different paddlers. Double waist tube is suitable for extreme conditions moreinsulation layers - however it requires suitable waist length cag that can be easily arranged between thelayers of the double tube.
pray ec ma ntenanceSpraydeck should be maintained just like another pieces of outfit made of the same fabrics. Dry it in the airafter each use, avoid high temperatures and store it hanging. If necessary, clean with soap water and asponge, never use chemical detergents.

eoprene clothing is a basic protection against cold in water. eoprene rubber is chemically very resistant syntheticpolychloroprene with nitrogen illed cells. he nitrogen gives the neoprene its insulation and buoyant eatures.Neoprene layer also protects your body from bruises and grazes.
Neoprene rubber is usually finished with a laminated layer of polyamide fabric on one or both sides for fur ther use.he layers on both sides can be same or di erent according to required properties o inal products. he inner
laminated layer makes putting on o a wet suit easier and it can also support its insulation eatures. he outerlayer protects the neoprene rubber and increases its durability and abrasion resistance. Both laminated layers alsoinfluence elasticity of the neoprene rubber.Insulation capacity o the neoprene rubber depends on its thickness. he thicker the neoprene the better protectionagainst cold, however the thicker neoprene is less lexible, so it restrains movements.
How to choose a wet suit?hen you are choosing a wet suit, consider its supposed use. It is necessary to think o the optimal thickness o the
neoprene rubber, then choose a design long or short, with or without reinforcement of strained parts, a way offastening and try out the right si ze. The wet suit should fit close to the body, so it performs its i nsulation functionproperly. I it is loose, a water layer between the neoprene and the body wont heat up, so the wet suit loses itsinsulation unction. n the other hand, the wet suit mustnt be too tight, because it would restrain your movement.
How to maintain neoprene wet suits?Choose the right size, so the neoprene rubber isnt strained with tension. Neoprene clothing made of one sidedneoprene are liable to abrasion and tear, so its recommended to protect them with some outer garment. Store theneoprene wet suits hanged, so you prevent them rom irreversible de ormations caused by olding them. or hygienicreasons it is suitable to rinse the wet suit a ter each use in clean water and let it dry properly in the air. ever washin a washing machine, dont dry by hot air or on heaters. I necessary, use soap water and a so t brush or sponge toremove heavy stains. Never use washing powders or chemical solvents. Have small damages repaired immediately.
