PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

New workforce agreement The Department and Education unions have met over a number of months now and have developed an enterprise agreement (2017-2021) which sets the working conditions of teachers, education support staff and paraprofessionals who work in schools. This proposed agreement is currently being discussed by staff across the State, leading to a vote on whether it should be adopted. This vote will take place this term and if passed the agreement will then be forwarded onto the Fair Work Commission for ratification. Winter Concert What a fantastic concert. I would like to thank all of the performers and their music teachers for their wonderful work.

North Eastern Regional Concert I would like to thank all of the music staff for their support of our 60+ performers who did exceptionally well at the NEVR concert last week. Year 9 and 10 Formal I have made some preliminary investigations into a Year 9 and 10 Formal. The tentative date is Thursday 17th August at Vogue Receptions, Blackburn Road. Students seem to be very excited by this initiative. The minimum number for the reception venue is 100. Information will be posted on compass next week. Master planning Our new buildings continue to take shape.

New R Block. Internal windows have been installed and the electrical and data cabling is being roughed in.

The architect is looking to change the brick since the original specification bricks are lighter in colour than the samples provided.

The brickwork on H, S and A blocks will be refurbished and painted. A decision was made to try to match the brickwork on the VCE centre. The sample shown at the front left of the photo has now been chosen.

New Administration block Roofing has been completed. Heating ductwork and external windows are now being fitted.

A view inside Admin area towards the new first aide room.

New locker bays Steel work has been put up. The builders are looking at different roller door companies to get the most reliable one.

Multi-function courts The court are now ready for students to use from Tuesday.

Examinations I would like to thank all the students for their dedicated application in exams. I look forward to reviewing their progress through the upcoming semester reports. Student Attitude to school survey 2017 The Department has delayed the annual student attitudes to school surveys. We expect them to be delivered during the week commencing 19th June.

MUSIC NEWS

WINTER CONCERT Last evening, Thursday 8th June, all 9 ensembles of the Highvale Instrumental Music Program presented their repertoire at the Winter Music Concert in the College theatre. These ensembles included the the two orchestras, Chamber Strings, Stage Band, two percussion ensembles, Highvale Harmonix, Concert Band and Nouveau Strings and involved more than 200 students. Due to the large numbers of performers, the Instrumental Music Department organised 2 presentations of the program, so that the parents and friends of our musicians could attend one of the concerts. Before the afternoon performance, students were invited to a sausage before preparing for their ensemble’s presentation. The concert opened with the Junior Orchestra presenting a dramatic version of ‘the Tempest’ and was followed by some excellent performances from our talented musicians.

The concert was made possible due to the hard work and many hours of preparation by the students and Instrumental Music staff of the College, supported by some of our dedicated staff from around the school. Special thanks to Mrs Janet Govan, Mrs Suzi Reid, Mrs Lisa Gaudion, Mrs Angelie O’Brien, Mr Daniel Tedford, Mr Jim McGuffie, Mrs Lynn Chew, Mrs Yin lam, Mr Nick Milosevic, Mrs Catherine Moad, Ms Georgia Bate, Mr Harrie Kingston, Ms Georgia Cleeland, Mrs Ruchi Patel and Mr Chris Mitchell. I would like to thank Mr Watkins and Mr Hunter for providing the sausage sizzle for the musicians.

The Music Captains were very helpful during the day, providing assistance with the sausage sizzle and working back stage. The evening concert was also an opportunity for parents and friends to hear the Highvale Harmonix Choir perform the Lennon/McCartney piece ‘Blackbird’, which they performed at the Boroondara Eisteddfod in May at which the group achieved second place in the Capella section. Congratulations to all students involved.

NORTH EASTERN REGION (NEVR) ANNUAL INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT 2017 ‘DANCEBEAT’ The 2017 annual NEVR Youth Concert, was held last week on Tuesday 30th May at Hamer Hall. Sixty-one of our instrumental music students participated in the performance and were involved in either the Concert Band, Secondary Choir, Wind Symphony, Stage Band, Choir Quartet or Clarinet Central ensemble. It was extraordinary to see the high standard achieved after just 2 rehearsal days.

The concert was an excellent opportunity for students to perform on the stage of a world-class venue and work with other students from all around the North Eastern Region of Victoria. All 61 Highvale students attended a sound check at Hamer Hall during the day of the concert. Each group was required on stage for a rehearsal and sound check then were able to visit Southbank when not required at the centre. This event could not have taken place without the support of the instrumental music staff who, not only assisted students in the development of the musical works but gave up their free time to attend rehearsal venues as tutors and assisted at the evening concert performance.

FAREWELL Last Friday Mrs. Patel, the Music Secretary left to prepare for the arrival of her baby, due in just a few short weeks. We wish her all the best and thank her for all the hard work that she has contributed to the instrumental music program.

Anne Linton Director of Music/Head of Performing Arts

CHILD DEVELOPMENT CLASS Child development class is full of new discoveries about the reality of becoming a parent. Each student has taken turns with the virtual baby; taking it home for two days and attend to its needs by responding to its cries and inserting the correct key to console it. Its needs can be a nappy change, burping, feed or attention. After 2 sleepless nights and interruption to school and social life, many are glad to hand the baby back, even though a little sad as they have actually bonded somewhat with the baby. In reality we cannot just use a key to quieten our babies or hand them back when we have had enough, so a day was organised for 4 ‘real’ mums of different age children to visit and tell their stories and answer questions. The students interacted with the babies and one two-year-old and observed their different levels of growth and development. It was a fun class and students had a reality check with the real-life responsibilities of being a parent, saw the bonding that takes place and how dependent a child is on the love and nurture of a parent.

VISUAL ARTS

The Billabong Dreaming: Youth Art for Reconciliation Exhibition at The Highway gallery last Saturday was a huge success with a large turnout of students, teachers, principals, parents and artists from the local community all in attendance. This was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum and the 25th anniversary of Mabo.

Jamie Chen from year 9 represented Highvale with his wonderful wire sculpture.

This Sunday 11th June, our Mayor and Mt Waverley ward Councillor Cr Rebecca Paterson, will visit the Gallery at 3pm for the closing procedures of the exhibition and to acknowledge NAIDOC Week which will be celebrated throughout Australia from 2nd to 9th July. If you're free and able, please come along and see all the wonderful student works on display.

FREE ANIMAL SANCTUARY TOURS

Rain, hail or shine, the 350-plus animals at Edgar’s

Mission have a place to call home, food in their

bellies and lives truly worth living.

Our sanctuary is nestled on 153 rolling acres in the

picturesque Macedon Ranges, Lancefield, just

over an hour’s drive from Melbourne. Edgar’s

Mission is made possible by a small but dedicated

team of staff, caring volunteers and through the

generosity of our compassionate supporters. We

are forever grateful for the support we receive.

Edgar's Mission is not a petting zoo and people

cannot wander the farm at their leisure, but you

do get to pat animals when it’s appropriate. All

visits are strictly by appointment, please do not

arrive unannounced, as we do not wish to turn you

away. Our informative, fun filled and interactive

guided tours aim to connect people with the

rescued farmed animals who reside here. They,

along with their inspirational stories of rescue will

touch your heart like no other.

Tours are free, but donations (tax-deductible) are

gratefully accepted. Hop, skip or jump onto our

website to see how you can become more

involved. Want to visit? We’re open for

educational tours by appointment; bookings via

our website are essential.
