IS IT TOO HOT TO EXERCISE OUTDOORS? The air temperature doesnt tell the whole story when it comes to walking and exercising in hot weather. The heat index tells the apparent temperature that you feel, based on air temperature and the relative humidity. You can use it to decide whether it is too hot for outdoor exercise.

The heat index is calculated for shade. If you will be exercising in direct sunlight, without shade, the heat index may be as much as 15 degrees higher.

When to Cancel Outdoor Exercise Based on the Heat IndexA high heat index can warn you to restrict activities to prevent heat sickness. The American College of Sports Medicine says that the risk of exertional heat sickness is raised when the heat index is above 82F/28C for people exercising for over an hour.

If you are trying to decide whether to walk or run outdoors, check the heat index to see whether it will be below 90 at the time you will be doing it. If your route doesnt have shade, factor in another 15 degrees to the heat index.

FAMILY-FUN EVENTS DISCOVERY DAYS AND SLEEPOVERSSpend the day (or night!) at the Perot Museum. The family-fun Discovery Days offer engaging themed activities throughout the Museum on the second Saturday of the month from 10am to 4pm. Plus, Perot Museum sleepovers will have young minds dreaming big as kids and their adult chaperones explore the entire Museum, enjoy a live science show, catch a 3D film (before catching some zs) and more. Discovery Days are free to members and included with general admission for non-members. Sleepovers start at $45 per child and $30 per adult chaperone. DISCOVERY CAMPSchool-aged kids (K-6) can get a dynamite dose of science while school is out at the Perot Museums Discovery Camps offered fall, winter and Spring Break and featuring STEAM-inspired activities. Plus, tots ages 3-4 can partake in half-day camps featuring interactive investigation and exploration with hands-on science experiments and creative projects led by expert camp instructors.
