Events Survey Local UAS Juneau students were encouraged to participate in the FY18 Events Survey via Facebook and Twitter posts, email, and in-person requests between April 19th and May 5th 2018. 137 responses were submitted via Google Forms, resulting in 129 usable entries. Seven responses were removed due to duplicate entries. One was removed because the participant lived outside of Juneau. A nominal incentive prize ($25 gift card) was given to a random winner each day and announced on Facebook to encourage participation.

Approximately 56% of respondents are interested in attending music events. 62% in film events. 54%

of respondents are interested in social and recreational events. 47% are interested in comedy. The

remainder are interested in attending comedy, lecture/speaker, game, dance, or community service

events. Approximately 1% of students are interested in attending family-friendly events.

Over 1/3 of respondents prefer rock, hip-hop/rap, pop, and indie/alternative music. Less than 1/4 of respondents prefer country,

folk/bluegrass, electronic, classical, jazz, or blues music.

Common themes included: skill building, social aspects, inclusion, fun, networking, and pursuing common interests.

Non-Event Goers (n=34)

Just over 62.7% reported they are interested or strongly interested in attending events

at UAS in the 2017-2018 academic year. Out of this group, 55.5% also reported that they

are likely or very likely to actually attend events in FY18. The vast majority (70+%) of

non-event attending students are either neutral or negative about their interest in and

likelihood of attending events at UAS in FY18.

For the 6 students who reported interest and likelihood of attending events in FY18,

their barriers include: Childcare (2), conflict with class schedule/study time (2), no events

of interest (1), and social anxiety (1).

When asked what we can do to make events on campus more appealing:

Nothing/ Unsure (38.8%); Schedule on Saturdays (2.7%); Collaborate with the School

District (2.7%) Better options/ broader appeal (11.1%); %); Email updates (8.3%); Family

Learning Outcomes: According to the survey respondents, attending our FY18 suite of events had a strong impact (majority agreeing or strongly

agreeing) on students: feeling connected to their campus; making new friends; having new experiences; and gaining new

perspectives. Attending events had a moderate impact (1/3 or more agree or strongly agree) on students: learning new skills and

making meaningful connections with other students. While attending events, the majority of respondents were able to balance

their time to accommodate academic success.

Power & Privilege Symposium

CAS The Campus Activities Programming CAS Assessment was completed in July 2017 & the Student Leadership Programs CAS was

My communication skills have improved as a result of my participation in AL-I 3.86 3.84

SAB met weekly during the academic year, with anywhere from 5-16 members present. A fall retreat was held in addition to two

end-of-semester celebration events. Two SAB students and the Activities Administrator attended NACA West in November 2017.

Over 800 volunteer points were distributed to members for attending meetings or assisting with events – this translates to well over

850 volunteer hours dedicated to bringing 36 quality events to the UAS campus. SAB does not meet in person over the summer, but

does communicate via email, Slack, and Facebook.

The Tier 1 group participated in the third annual door-to-door canned food drive on October 7, 2017, and delivered collected items

to the Southeast Alaska Food Bank. AL-I students got a tour of the building and information on food security in Juneau. The 2018

food drive will occur on October 6th.

The Tier 2 group hosted the 4th Annual Day of Service on April 7, 2018. Over sixty volunteers (students and staff members) visited

eleven local non-profit organizations including: Juneau Montessori School, CBJ Landscape Maintenance, Juneau Public Libraries, Trail

Mix, Douglas Public Library, REACH, AEYC-SEA, Juneau Youth Services, UAS Stewardship Project, Southeast Alaska Foodbank and The

Bridge Adult Day Program.

The Tier 1 overnight Emerging Leaders Retreat was held at the Methodist Camp (September 8-9) and will be held at the same

location again in the fall of 2018. The Tier 2 Empowered Leaders Retreat was held at the UAS Rec Center (January 27th).

Recruitment for the Fall 2018 Tier 1 cohort is complete with 25 students accepted and 3 on a waitlist. Recruitment for the Fall 2018

AL-I Gold cohort is underway. The Tier 1 schedule has been finalized. The group will meet most Fridays in J. P. Hall during the fall

2018 semester (time: TBD).

FYE & New Student Orientation Committees The Student Activities Coordinator sits on both the FYE and New Student Orientation Committees (See FYE report).

Alaska Airlines Student Concert Series at UAS

The formal report to the Chancellor and Alaska Airlines was turned in on June 28, 2018. The report included highlights of SAB

involvement and learning, information on each event, promotion strategies, and a request to renew the series for FY19. Alaska

Airlines has renewed the MOU with UAS for the FY19 Concert Series. SAB is working to identify performers to bring to campus as

part of the series.

Power & Privilege Symposium

A committee of students, staff, and faculty meets monthly in the spring/summer and biweekly in the fall semester to plan this full-

day teach-in event. The 2nd Annual P&P Symposium was held November 7th 2017 on the Juneau Campus and was a resounding

success. The full report is available on the Google Drive in the P&P Symposium folder. Faculty Senate has approved the 2018 date

(November 6th) and the event will be on both the academic and faculty contract calendars. A 2018 “Save the Date” has been drafted

and will be shared out by the Chancellor’s and Provost’s Offices to all UAS staff and faculty.

Green Dot The Student Activities Coordinator co-presented two Green Dot Bystander Trainings for students from the Juneau, Sitka, and

Ketchikan campuses on September 30th and February 3rd. Twenty-six students between the three campuses were trained in FY18.

Future trainings are being planned by the Title IX Coordinator.

The vacant Graphic Arts Specialist, Recruitment & Retention Specialist, and Event Tech positions will need to be re-hired in August or

September 2018 for the upcoming academic year. All SAB Specialist staff members received evaluations at the end of the fall 2017

semester.
