Hit me like a bolt of lightning. Sure, I could help out with a regional or nation-al cause with my new-found retirement freedom, but what about needs a little closer to home? The Highlands is beautiful and full of things to do, but sometimes we forget that not all our neighbors share in such good fortune. There are tons of kids out there who need a safe place to play sports, families that need a little help with groceries or the light bill, and older folks who have a tough time getting to a hot meal or to doctors’ appointments. I read about where I could pitch in by reading this very newsletter last year. It’s been fun experience and I’m glad to know I can make a difference right here in my own backyard. Whether you are, or you’ve been, an accountant, a bus driver or anything in between - there’s a spot for you here at HCM. Give it some thought and I hope you join me.

Call 502-458-3045 to learn more about our 3 Child Care Centers!

HCM Child Care Centers From One Generation to the Next

What says more about HCM’s childcare centers than the fact that we routinely have children enrolled whose parents attended our program when THEY were in daycare and preschool! HCM’s child care centers offer a nurturing and inclusive environment, accepting children from all local zip codes, ages infant to five years.

Two of the three centers are located at the Douglass Loop, one in St. Paul United Methodist Church and the other in Douglass Blvd. Christian Church. The third location is tucked away behind the hustle and bustle of Baxter Ave., in an old estate house on Eastern Star Court, off of Cherokee Rd.

Highland Youth Recreation has been providing a positive sports experience for kids since 1976! Thanks to many dedicated vol-unteers and sponsors, HYR, a program of HCM, offers Spring & Fall Soccer and Summer T-ball, Baseball, & Softball to kids ages 4 - 17. HYR collaborates with Kentucky Refugee Ministries to bring in kids from all over the world!

Highlands Court ApartmentsThe Highlands Court Apartments is a collaboration between HCM and Bellarmine University and managed by Underhill and Associates. It is conveniently located on Richmond Avenue (near Norris Place) and provides HUD Section 8 Senior and Disabled Housing.

HCM’s Member Congregations: Cornerstone of Support

HCM is grateful and proud to be affiliated with and supported by 21 Highlands congregations. The support they provide is the basis of HCM’s founding and ability to grow over the years. HCM welcomes congregations of all faiths to join in the collaboration and mission of helping our neighbors in need.

In the summer of 2018, HCM provided an opportunity for the community to explore the spiritual traditions of the Highlands. The services of two different denominations

had by all! HCM is happy to provide this support in return to its member congregations and hopes to continue this tour again in the summer of 2019. Like our Facebook page and visit our website to find out more about our upcoming

events and programs! www.HCMLouisville.org.

Raising Funds to Help Feed Our Neighbors in NeedEmpty Bowls

Hunger Benefit The idea is simple: serve a simple meal of soup, bread, cheese, and fruit for a simple purpose: to help end hunger. The 22nd annual Empty Bowls event held Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, was a great success! We are so thankful to have such a supportive community that attends, spon-sors, volunteers for, and donates to our major fundraising event every year. We look forward to many more to come! Empty Bowls is held in October as a www.WeekInTheHighlands.org event.

building including the Sanctuary built in 1902, offices, kitchen, gym (now Event Hall) and classrooms to HCM. In turn, with alot of TLC, the HCC became the new home of HCM’s Dare to Care Food Pantry, Emergency Assistance Program, Senior Services Program, and Central Office, as well as a new HCM nutrition site hosting activities and lunch for Seniors. In 2018, the HCC was the recipient of a Kentucky Colonels’ grant for new stage curtains and a new set of event chairs. For rental inquiries and tours, call Mary Beth at 451-3695 ext. 200 or email [email protected]. More information can be found at ourwebsite, www.hcmlouisville.org.

Now a bustling community center with many weekly programs, over a dozen tenants, and an Event Hall & Sanctuary available for rent, the HCC came about in 2014, after the congregation of Christ Evangelical United Church of Christ donated the entire
