WE RECOGNIZE OUR

BEST

C ontributing your time and talents to

your neighborhood is essential, and

we need you.

Your officers and

directors have established

an annual recognition.

While awarding those whom

most stand out…it is really

an “army” of neighbors

helping make Highland

Lake …a wonderful place to

live. This year, our highest

honor went to two resi-

dents. Our Lifetime

Achievement goes to DON DORSCH, whose

family has been a part of Highland Lake since

the 1930s has served faithfully for many dec-

ades as officer and president of the Highland

Lake Property Owners Association.

THE ROBERT ROSEMEYER FAMILY

Since the early 50s, Bob Rosemeyer, Myrtle

Rosemeyer and all six of their sons have been

an important part of our community. Bob and

Myrt were among the early organizers of the

Highland Lake Property Owners Association.

Bob’s legacy of taking care of the raft is being

carried forward into the SIXTH decade by Son

Marc Rosemeyer. Congratulations. Thanks for

a job well done!

Our Distinguished Service award went to past

secretary and reigning Carp Commander, RON

JENSEN – it was Ron whose idea it was to

recognize both Bill Ryan, Sr., and Robert

Gnarro with honorary street signs, now visible

at the corner of Hickory and Oak – in the South

Circle Area of Highland

Lake.

Another DSA was awarded

to HANK DeGROH, whose

service as president and

active member for most of

the 30+ years he has lived

here -- is recognized

ALL STAR AWARDS for

exhibiting extra care and

giving of their time went to Jim Leman (who

designs this newsletter), Pat Smart (who tends

to the upkeep of Downey Park), and to John

Sonnenberg (whose underwater camera and

GPS tracking of invasive weeds has been in-

strumental in the success we have had killing

the bad stuff) Let’s have a BIG round of ap-

plause for this year’s AMAZING VOLUN-

YOUR HLPOA BOARD MEMBERS Financial Report as of April 17, 2014

Darren Ruback, HLPOA Treasurer

T hank you to all of you who continually support the upkeep of

the lake through contributions. Thanks to you, our various

other fund raising activities, and money we had in the bank,

we will again be able to do “just enough” to keep the lake

healthy and strong again this year.

However, we have a LARGE portion of our residents who do not con-

tribute to the upkeep of our most important property value assets—the

lake and our parks. We have been able to get by with “spot treating” of

our lake recently, but for its continued health, a yearly maintenance

routine is CRITICAL, and without the help of more neighbors, there is

no way we will ever be able to afford to treat the lake as it will need to

be treated.

Currently we are collecting contributions from a little more than HALF of

the residents on the lake as well as the association neighborhoods. To

keep it simple that’s a little more than $12,000 each year. With spot

treatments costing about $8,000 yearly and insurance about $4,500,

you can see there is no money left over to do anything else without

more contributions.

Namely: Full lake treatment would cost $4,000-$6,000 more than

we can afford to pay.

Our parks are currently maintained and kept beautiful by caring resi-

dents, but all the signs are falling apart and need to be replaced and

any additional upgrades to the parks cannot be done…tables, lighting,

beachfront sand and erosion control plantings, and tree maintenance

are all items that could be done but have to be ignored for lack of funds.

Fish stocking is not being done as often as it could and should be. We

have funds in reserve to do stocking, but without additional contribu-

tions those funds will do little to improve our fishery.

Since we all live on or near such a beautiful lake, and benefit from it

greatly, it is a real shame that not everyone takes ownership of helping

to keep it beautiful. It is for that reason that we say a special thank you

to all who do contribute by listing your names in our HI-LITES and up-

date our “thank you” website listing each month.

Monthly financial information is posted on our website monthly so you

can stay up to date with where all contributions are being spent as well!

LAKE MONITORING

Constant vigilance under the surface of our water is critical to our entire

community.

Lakes Management

Committee, under

the direction of Dave

Coulter, John Son-

nenberg and Mike

Kalstrup will be keep-

ing watch to prevent

any excess growth of

non-native species.

WHAT IT TAKES TO

RUN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND LAKE

It takes nearly $20,000 a year – sadly, we hope to collect only $13,500

(see the Treasurer’s comments)

PAY NOW

Please contribute your dues ($110) by mail to “Highland Lake, P. O. Box 101, Grayslake, 60030 (or, by visiting the PAYPAL button on www.HLCommunitysite.com
