Welcoming MessageOn behalf of the Whidbey Island Celtic Society,
we would like to extend a warm welcome to all attending our 16th annual Highland Games.
We invite you to join us as we celebrate the richness and depth of our great Scottish culture and heritage. Please take time to visit every corner of the grounds, marvel at the dancers, cheer the athletes, enjoy the music, explore your ancestry at the clan tents, taste the food and visit the vendor booths. At noon, please join us for our Opening Ceremonies as we honor our dignitaries followed by a parade of the clans and pipe bands to be held at the main stage area.
May you all enjoy the games and take away with you a wee bit of Scottish culture. Good luck to everyone competing here today.

He is also an actor and appeared in movies such as "Apocalypse Now" "American Graffiti" "Murder She Wrote" and many television commercials - specifically the old Rainier Beer ones.

Huskies, and generously donates his equipment and experience to various charity events in the area.
Kyle’s willingness to go the extra mile for us, as well as other organizations in the area, is why we chose him to be our Chieftain of the Day.

PUTTING THE STONE: REGULAR STYLEThis event is the same as the Olympic Shot Put except a smooth rounded stone weighing just over 17 lbs. is used instead of a steel ball. The stone is delivered from behind a 6” x4’6” long trig (toeboard) and must be put from in front of the shoulder using one hand only. The throwing area allows a 7’6” run up and each competitor is allowed 3 attempts-the best one to count.Measurement is made from the point on the trig where the throw is made to the nearest break in the ground where the stone lands. Touching the top of the trig or the ground beyond the trig is foul.
28 POUND AND 56 POUND WEIGHT FOR DISTANCEThe weights are of metal with a chain and ring handle attached. Total weight is 28 lbs. or 56 lbs. and the overall length of both is 18”. The weight is thrown one handed from behind the same trig used in putting the stone but with a 9’ run up allowed. Any style may be used but the most efficient is to spin like a discus thrower.
56 POUND WEIGHT FOR HEIGHTThe weight for height is a block or ball weight to which a ring handle is attached. It has a total weight of 56 lbs. and the objective is to throw it up and over a bar similar to that used in a pole vault. The competitor is only allowed to use one hand. The starting height of the competition is the lowest height requested by the competitors. Once a competitor starts to throw he must compete each time the bar is raised. Each competitor is allowed 3 attempts to clear the bar at each height. If the weight touches the bar on its way over but does not dislodge the bar, then this is considered a successful throw.
Events begin at 9:00 AM and continue throughout the day.

THE SCOTTISH HAMMERThe hammer head is round and made of metal and the handle is made of cane. It is 16 lbs. (14 for women). The hammer is thrown standing style with the thrower facing away from the throwing area. He usually takes the hammer three times around his head making sure his feet are firmly planted on the ground, as under the Scottish rules, his feet must not move until after he releases the hammer. Number of throws, measurements and foul rules are the same as for the stone put.
THE CABER TOSSThe caber used in our Games vary from 13’ to 17’ and weigh 70 to 120 lbs. To toss the caber the competitor is assisted in setting it upright with the tapered end resting on the ground. The caber tosser then lifts it up, balances it in a vertical position with his hands underneath and the caber resting against his shoulder. Keeping it balanced, he runs as far as he wants to build up speed and momentum. When he stops to heave, imagine that he is at the bottom of a clock at 6 o’clock. Using strength, balance, timing, speed and the force of the caber, the tosser tries to throw it end over end so that the tapered end he had in his hands will land straight ahead at the 12 o’clock position for a perfect score.

WHIDBEY’S OWN “SHIFTY SAILORS”Well known by many in the Pacific Northwest for their enthusiastic singing and crowd-pleasing presentations, The Shifty Sailors mission is to make sure that maritime communities understand their nautical history. They perform harmonious renditions of traditional and historical sea shanty folk music.
THE SWINGING NETTLESSteve Showell, Joanne Rouse, Caven Keith and Bev Heising– The Swinging Nettles are a group of talented Whidbey Island Musicians playing a variety of instruments including pipes, mandolin, fiddle, guitar and whistle.
MAGGIE'S FURYThis band combines the rousing melodies of the Irish fiddle and whistle with spirited vocal harmonies likened to Eastern Canadian Maritime traditions. Add a touch of modern folk rock and you have the perfect recipe for Celtic mayhem packed to the kilt with harmony, passion and spirit. Based in Bellingham, Washington, Maggie's Fury came to life five years ago from the musical passions of brothers Terry and James Walters, and life long family friend Roxanne Read.
THE FIDDLE-FOOTED CUMMINGSThe father, Dale, plays guitar and several flutes. Mother, Judith, plays fiddle and harp, sings in Gaelic, and does step-dancing. Flora plays fiddle and Elinor plays fiddle and they both do Highland dancing. Judith, Dale, and Flora are also members of the NW Scottish Fiddle Ochestra. Judith is from Scotland.

BANDS PARTICIPATING IN OUR CELEBRATION:
NORTHWEST JUNIOR PIPE BANDThe NWJPB was founded by Charlie McNeill, a Scottish emigrant with a deep love for the bagpipes and for teaching kids. Starting a youth pipe band was a lifelong dream for Charlie and before he passed away he saw that dream realized. The band is based in Shoreline, WA and since Charlie’s passing in 2001, has been led by Kevin Auld who, with the help of instructors Scott Parker and Marcie MacRae MacQuarrie, has brought it to where it is today. The band wears the MacKenzie tartan (plaid). By chance, this happens to be the same tartan as the Highland Light Infantry where Charlie spent time as a military piper, and also the Seattle Pipe Band of which Charlie was the Pipe Major many years ago.

WASHINGTON SCOTTISH PIPE BANDAs a Grade III pipe band registered as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, we are dedicated to the promotion of Scottish culture through performance and education. Our musicians include students and professionals, teenagers and 60-somethings, but all share this dedication. Though the band was officially founded in 1938, our roots trace back to the late 19th century, making us the oldest continuously operated pipe band in the Pacific Northwest. Throughout our history, we have maintained a tradition of excellence. Today, the band competes at most of the scheduled BCPBA events throughout the Pacific Northwest

KENMORE AND DISTRICT PIPE BANDThe Kenmore & District Pipe Band came into being in the year 2001 when a group of people with a common appreciation for Scottish piping and drumming gathered in order to enhance that appreciation by improving their musical skills. Some of these people brought previous piping and drumming experience to the group; others were beginners. The group included all levels of ability, all ages, both genders and people from a broad spectrum of trades and professions. Inevitably, it was not long until performing in the public became one of the group's activities

TACOMA SCOTS PIPE BANDFormed in 1971 by Pipe Major William Micenko, the Tacoma Scots bring the thrilling sound of the Great Highland Bagpipe and the rich cultural heritage of Scotland together. Today, the Tacoma Scots’ members carry the music, dance and history of their Scottish ancestors, both real and adopted, into the community through their high quality performances in a wide variety of venues. The Ancient Sinclair tartan and the Cock of the North crest are worn proudly to honor their founder, the late Pipe Major William (Bill) Micenko. The Tacoma Scots are a family oriented band that can be seen throughout the Pacific Northwest. They have earned the distinction as the ‘Official Pipe Band of the Pierce County Sheriff.’

Highland DancingTHE HIGHLAND FLINGThis A dance of victory in battle. Traditionally, the ancient warriors and clansmen performed this dance on the shield of the defeated. Hence, the dance is performed in one spot and requires precise footwork.
THE SWORD DANCEThe legend goes that Malcolm Canmore first danced this over two crossed swords after a victorious battle near Dunsinane. After that, Scottish warriors would perform this dance for luck before going into battle. If the dancer touched one of the swords, it was considered a bad omen. (It was also GREAT exercise for keeping fit for fighting).
THE SEANN TRIUBHASPronounced, Shawn Trews in the Gaelic language, its translation into English is ‘old trousers’. The dance has obscure origins. The movement and motions definitely depict a person in the act of shedding his breeks (britches), and the tradition states it is a Highlander who is impatient to get rid of the unfamiliar garment and back to the freedom of his native Highland kilt.
THE IRISH JIGA dance which may seem somewhat out of place at Scottish games, but the dance was not unique to Ireland alone. The Jig is a Scottish portrayal of an Irish washerwoman yelling at (1)some schoolboys for getting into her freshly cleaned laundry drying in the sun or, (2) her husband for staying out all night with the “lads”. –––You decide which story is more accurate.
THE SCOTTISH LILT AND BLUE BONNET These are but just a few of the lesser known Scottish National Dances which are now performed at Highland Games and Festival. These dances are gentler, more flowing and graceful in nature than the strong and vigorous Highland dances.

Flyball is a relay race that matches two teams of four dogs each, racing side-by-side over a Flyball course. The course consists of a starting line, 4 hurdles spaced 10 feet apart and a box. The first hurdle is 6 feet from the start line and the box is 15 feet from the last hurdle for a 51 foot overall length. The dogs jump the hurdles and step on a spring loaded box that shoots out a tennis ball. The dog catches the tennis ball and then runs back over the 4 hurdles. When the re-turning dog crosses the starting line the next dog goes. The first team to have all 4 dogs run without errors wins the heat.
