Dear Student
Welcome to the 2014 Manchester Higher Education Convention, organised by UCAS in conjunction with The University of Manchester.
We hope that you find the convention useful in helping determine your higher education institution choices. Approximately 170 universities and colleges, from across the country, are represented at the convention. You will also have the opportunity to obtain information from many other exhibitors on what you can do before, during and after your time in higher education.
As well as universities and colleges, there are a number of organisations in attendance to advise you on gap year opportunities, specific career options, postgraduate courses, and much more.
To benefit from the visit, you are encouraged to speak to as many exhibitors as possible. They are here to answer any questions you may have about the courses on offer, including their content and entry requirements, as well as student life, accommodation and other questions relating to higher education.
Also, don’t forget to check the seminar programme to see if there are any of interest to you.

A fresh new alternative to the traditional university experienceFor Sophie, all doubts were put to rest on her first day at work. “Walking into the KPMG building, realising this is where I work, and getting involved in the business side of life when you’re 18. That’s exciting!”
Sophie is one of a growing pool of talent who didn’t have to choose between starting a career or going to university straight after their A-Levels or Scottish Highers. Because KPMG’s School and College Leaver Programme is something that allowed her to do both, which appealed to her straightaway.
“I didn’t know anything about accountancy or being an accountant. But as soon as I started looking into it, I found it was a lot more interesting than what the stereotype says.”
Unlike typical school leavers’ options such as apprenticeships, KPMG’s programme actually gives young people like Sophie the opportunity to get a university degree at one of England’s top universities – Durham University Business School, the University of Birmingham or the University of Exeter – as well as have all their tuition and accommodation fees paid for, and start their business careers right away – all without building up huge student tuition fees and accommodation debt.
Of course, going straight into work is a big decision for anyone to make.
“I was definitely worried about moving out of home to go to London”, says Sophie. “That’s terribly daunting when you’re 18 – but there’s loads of support available to you. Plus, there’s always a long-term goal to reach, so every day you feel like you’re working towards something.”
The programme isn’t just about getting a foot in the door. It aims to serve as a foundation for young people to develop the skills to build a successful future, exposing them to a range of different businesses from day one.
“The most important thing I’ve learned so far is how different the business world is from the school world. It’s not like homework that you can just redo if it isn’t right – you have to go out of your way to ask questions if you’re not sure on something. Everything you do matters – you have real responsibility.
I know it isn’t for everyone, but if you’re worried about uni fees, know what you want to do and are keen to get started in your career, it’s definitely an option.”
“And”, she adds, “wearing a suit every day and getting off the tube at Canary Wharf is pretty exciting!”
