It would seem that the two parts of the Horsell census were arranged as if the enumerator had walked the area covered in that order even if this was not the case and data was merely so arranged afterwards. A further complication arose out of which way the invigilator walked. (The direction of the walk can be identified by the numbers given to each household) For example, starting at the Vicarage he could either continue up the High Street or down Church Hill. In the latter event, his round eventually arrived at the Birch end of the High Street continuing along the High Street until the Vicarage was reached again. The direction of the enumerator’s round can be gauged by the numbering system (NB the same numbers were used for both the Red Lion and Crown sides of the Census). Further confusion arises when a particular household is inserted completely out of order, for example the Red Lion in the 1881 Census.

High Street and Church Hill Horsell

The object of this paper is to identify the houses and shops in the High Street and Church Hill

during the period of the British ten yearly Censuses returns {1841-1911)

The Censuses would seem an excellent means of finding out who lived in which house or shop

during a particular period. The returns actually began in 1801 but the earlier ones contain no

specific information on individual houses or persons.

In interpreting the Censuses, if you are working with the original hand written copy

handwriting is a common problem and in any event the enumerator sometimes appears to

completely mishear what he was told by the head of the household.

Another particular difficulty is that whereas today every house has a number or name or both,

in 1841, and for many years thereafter, houses had neither names nor numbers. If a house had

a name, it either described its occupants, for example, Cosiers in Old Woking (now The Old

House), its purpose, The Vicarage (or The Old Vicarage) in Horsell, or the type of property

The Cottage as in present day Horsell. Where a house with a name did appear in a Census this

was an early guide to location, particularly to postmen and those looking for a house in a long

road. Today we have postcodes but these are only a comparatively recent introduction not likely

to help at present with Census returns only published when 100 years old,

In Horsell, certainly in the early years, the returns were split into two with the dividing line

running down what is now the High Street previously known as The Street or just Village. This

was sensible since it is possible to establish chains of individuals who ran the two pubs almost

facing each other on opposite sides of the street.

When development began on the canal side of the Church the continuation was called not

unreasonably Church Hill. Subsequently some doubt arose as to where High Street ended and

Church Hill began but the latter has now been established as being after the School on one side

and the Church on the other.

Few houses were numbered in the earlier years except perhaps rows of cottages (either grouped

or built in terraces) and not all houses retained their original name. The two separate parts of

the Census in Horsell can best be identified by the two pubs namely the Red Lion on the Church

side and the Crown on the other.

It would seem that the two parts of the Horsell census were arranged as if the enumerator had

walked the area covered in that order even if this was not the case and data was merely so

arranged afterwards. A further complication arose out of which way the invigilator walked.

(The direction of the walk can be identified by the numbers given to each household) For

example, starting at the Vicarage he could either continue up the High Street or down Church

Hill. In the latter event, his round eventually arrived at the Birch end of the High Street

continuing along the High Street until the Vicarage was reached again. The direction of the

enumerator’s round can be gauged by the numbering system (NB the same numbers were used

for both the Red Lion and Crown sides of the Census).

Further confusion arises when a particular household is inserted completely out of order, for

example the Red Lion in the 1881 Census.

You will find attached to this paper Appendices containing transcriptions of that part of the

Censuses for Horsell which cover High Street and Church Hill with separate extracts for the

Red Lion and Crown sides.

For 1851, details extracted from Edward Ryde’s survey are also shown again divided into the

two sides. This survey is generally more reliable than the census since family names are

allocated to the houses and buildings shown on the survey plan. The National School opposite

the church was added to the original plan (note in Ryde’s diary 17 March 1852 newly erected

National School at Horsell added to map).

Albert Mangles was vicar of Horsell from 1840 to 1875 but lived outside the parish at Beech

Hill in Mayford. As a consequence, he does not appear in the Horsell census returns during that

period and the Vicarage was often occupied by curates and others.

In describing who was living where during the period of the Censuses each side of the High

Street is dealt with separately for each year commencing with the Crown side first as follows:

First the Crown side

The Crown

The returns under the 1841 and 1851 censuses appear to be arranged in the same order but the

Edward Ryde 1851 survey is the most accurate record of order being based on a map with

occupants allocated to particular buildings shown on the map. The names of the families in

these two returns below, therefore, follow the Ryde order.

1841

Down what is now known as Church Hill (The numbers are those on the Ryde map)

612.1 Sarah Tickner and sister

612.2 John Gale, agricultural labourer and wife and daughter

The Gale and Tickner families lived in two houses above The Cottage towards the top

of the hill

614 Samuel Willis, painter and wife at The Cottage (see my paper on this 18th century cottage)

Up High Street from the National School

Caveys’ shop showing oven space

606 James Cavey, baker and family

This was the village baker who carried on business on this side of the street. Former

baker’s premises are usually identifiable by the tell-tale old baking oven running right

up to the rear of the original shop. Today the shop occupied by The Horsell Framing

Company (see above) with its long left hand wall running from its frontage to the back

of the plot would seem to indicate such an oven and suggest that this was the site of the

original Caveys’ shop.

603 William Cox, publican and wife at The Crown

600 William Spooner, shoe maker and family possibly not at the Benstead site

1851

Down what is now known as Church Hill (The numbers are those on the Ryde map)

In 1925 he is Sub Post Master. John handed the shop over to his son Will in 1945 who

retired from the business in 1952 passing the shop (see below) to a Mr RT Shrimpton.

The returns under the 1841 and 1851 censuses appear to be arranged in the same order but the

Edward Ryde 1851 survey is the most accurate record of order being based on a map with

occupants allocated to particular buildings shown on the map. The names of the families in

these two returns below, therefore, follow the Ryde order ie not the order of the walk or

arrangement.

1841 (The numbers are those on the Ryde map)

101 James Stedman, farmer and family at Malthouse Farm

100 David Harmes, labourer and family and

100 James Martin, agricultural labourer wife and daughter both families were probably living

at present day Kalmia.

This above suggestion allows for Carmi Cobbett and his family to move in after he and

his brother. Henry purchased the Nurseries Estate in 1841 (see 1851). Very little of the

old original two cottages remains but the roof line shows that this has been raised (see

picture below)

Kalmia

7 Stephen and Sarah Moore at the Red Lion

605 Henry Chandler, labourer and Jane (previously on The Crown side)

10 John Knowls a farmer and butcher.

In 1840 it was probably he probably bought The Horsell Nurseries Estate (including

Esgairs, Sow Moor, Gastons, Inner and Outer Gastons Field and Marl Close)

A farmer who breeds cattle does so to sell those cattle. These days we are accustomed

to see cattle sold at market but in the 19th century there was no reason why a farmer

should not slaughter and sell his cattle to the public himself. John Knowls carried on

business from roughly where 113 High Street stands today. This house was built when

the previous building Lime Tree House was compulsorily purchased by Woking

Council.

Page 9: High Street and Church Hill Horsell

9

1851 (The numbers are those on the Ryde map)

The enumerator walked (or arranged) his returns from Thornash Farm along the Street down

Church Hill to the bottom (items 1 to 9 in the returns) as follows:

101 James Stedman at Malthouse Farm

100 Carmi Cobbett, nurseryman and his family at Kalmia. With his brother Henry purchased

Horsell Nurseries Estate in 1841

2 Felix Forder, National schoolmaster and his wife in Parsonage House

7 Stephen Moore, victualler wife and family at the Red Lion

10 Herbert Hart, butcher and his wife at Lime Tree House

This is almost certainly on the same site as John Knowls. The Hart family would appear

to have come from Old Woking.

13 James Clark, grocer and his wife

14 Jacob Spooner, letter carrier and his wife

16 George Fenn, farmer and his wife at Thornash Farm

62 Jonathan Baldwin, schoolmaster and wife at Ivy Cottage in Cheapside

N.B. The commentary to Edward Ryde’s Survey of 1851 notes a House and Garden owned by

John Knowls and occupied by Sarah Darke next to the Red Lion but neither this house nor

Sarah appear in the 1851 Census (see above). Felix Forder and his wife would presumably have

been employed in the newly opened National School opposite.

The 1861 census starts with the Darke family although Sarah has gone (no entry in St Mary’s

burial records). The remainder of the families down to James and Elizabeth Stedman are the

same except Felix Forder and his wife in the Vicarage House have been replaced by William

Walsh, the curate and his cousin, John Frederick Walsh

1861

The enumerator walked (or arranged) his returns at the Red Lion or just before and proceeded

downhill to Malthouse Farm (items 1 to 5 in the returns) and then along The Moor and then

eventually arriving at the Birch end of High Street (items 86 to 90 in the returns) as follows:

William Darke gentleman and family

Stephen Moore, victualler and family at the Red Lion

William Walsh, curate (1859-63) and cousin at the Vicarage House

St Mary’s church

Carmi Cobbett, nurseryman and family at Kalmia

James Stedman, farmer and family at Malthouse Farm

And then along the Moor

James Clarke, grocer and baker and wife, and boarder, William Cox former landlord of Crown

at East Gains Farm (Esgairs)

Herbert Hart, butcher and his wife at Lime Tree House

1871

The 1871 Census has the enumerator walking the Red Lion side up Church Hill from Malthouse

Farm towards and along High Street (items 86 to 90 and 1 to 4 in the returns). John Stedman

and his wife have now succeeded his father at the farm, Alice and Charlotte are the only

Page 10: High Street and Church Hill Horsell

10

members of the Cobbett family the head having been absent on the night of the survey. The

vicarage is now occupied by William Appleford, and his wife Mary Jane and their household.

Stephen Moore is at the Red Lion with Henry John Rudelhoff a retired butcher and his wife

between the inn and the village butcher Herbert Hart and his wife, Mary and his family. After

the butchers comes James Clark, baker, his wife, Elizabeth and his father in law William Cox

formerly landlord of the Crown.

John Stedman, farmer and family at Malthouse Farm

Alice and Charlotte Cobbett, nurseryman’s daughters at Kalmia. Head of household not

present.

William Appleford, chaplain (of female HM convict prison Woking) and family in the

Vicarage.

Stephen Moore and family at the Red Lion

Henry Rudelhoff, retired butcher and wife

Herbert Hart, butcher and family at Lime Tree House

James Clark, baker and wife, and William Cox father in law and former landlord of Crown.

Richard Howard, horticultural labourer and family.

Henry Cobbett, horticultural labourer and family.

1881

1881 sees the enumerator approaching from the Birch direction of the High Street where Henry

Watts and his wife Sarah are at Thornash Farm. Continuing we find Henry Cobbett,

nurseryman and his wife Mary Ann employing 2 men and 4 boys and next Richard Howard,

propagator of plants and his wife Jane, then Elizabeth Clark, baker and grocer, followed by

Lime Tree House with Herbert Hart and wife Mary. William Harding, lodger and farm labourer

completes this walk.

The Red Lion with landlord George Johnson and wife Dorsa are isolated in another part of the

Census and then the walk recommences with John Back vicar at the Village followed downhill

by James Cobbett, nurseryman and finally John and Rosina Stedman at the bottom of the hill

The enumerator would appear to have started his walk (or arranged) his returns at the Vicarage

continuing downhill to Malthouse Farm returning to High Street at Thornash Farm to complete

the circle (items 1 to 3 and 83 to 89 in the returns) as follows:

John Stedman, farmer and family at Malthouse Farm

James Cobbett, nurseryman and family at Kalmia

John Back, vicar (1878-1884) niece and nephew at the Vicarage

George Johnson and his wife at the Red Lion.

Return is out of position in comparison with other entries (item 36).

Herbert Hart, butcher and family at Lime Tree House

Elizabeth Clark, baker and grocer

Richard Howard, propagator of plants and family

Henry Cobbett, nursery and family

Henry Watts, farmer and family at Thornash Farm

Page 11: High Street and Church Hill Horsell

11

1891

The enumerator walked (or arranged) his returns from Malthouse Farm up Church Hill and

along the High Street (items 1 to 11 in the returns) as follows:

John Stedman, farmer and brewer and family at the Brewery House (or Malthouse Farm)

James Cobbett, nurseryman and family at Kalmia

William Turle, vicar (1884-1897) and wife in the Street

John Back, clerk in holy orders (previous vicar) at Church Hill House

Frank Warren, coachman and family at Church Hill House

James Picicett, licensed victualler and family at the Red Lion

John Warner, gardner and family at Gastons

Herbert Hart, butcher and his wife at Lime Tree House

There is no mention of Herbert’s wife Mary so we must presume that she had died.

Joseph Payne, baker (master) and family at East Gayes (Esgairs)

Richard Howard, nurseryman propagator and family in the Street

Henry Cobbett, nurseryman and family in the Street

1901

The enumerator walked (or arranged) his returns from the bottom of Church Hill to the High

Street {items 1 to 18 in the returns) as follows:

Mary Ann Ottaway, dressmaker and sisters were daughters of Carmi Cobbett and probably

lived at Kalmia

Arnold Saunders, headmaster prep school family and pupils at St Mary’s Hill

St Mary’s Hill

St Mary’s Hill was built by Mrs Isham Smith in 1899 and stood roughly where Lych

Way stands today. She married Arnold Saunders at St Mary’s on New Year’s Day 1900

(WN&M) and he was able to set up his school after his marriage to her.

Norman Pares vicar (1897-1935) and wife in the Vicarage

Edward Cobb, port wine shipper at Church Hill

James Heale, coachman and family at Church Hill Lodge

At this point in the Census there is an entry St Marys Hill Uninhabited. This empty

house probably became the new Vicarage occupied by the vicar.

Albert Gosling, licensed victualler and family at the Red Lion

Walter Lansley, gardner wife and daughter at Institute

Hiram Hart, butcher and family at Lime Tree House. Herbert must have died.

Richard Howard, nurseryman and family at Esgairs

Frederick Cobbett, railway worker and family at Nursery Cottage

Henry Cobbett, nurseryman and family at The Plat

John Evelegh, curate (1901-9) and sister at The Plat

1911

The 1911 Census shows the number of rooms occupied by each individual household. The

number includes the kitchen as a room but not any scullery, landing, lobby, closet, bathroom;

nor warehouse, office, shop. The number of rooms is shown in blue by the dwelling name. The

enumerator has separated the Church Hill and High Street parts of his return as follows:

Charles Bertram Ryde, Invalided surveyor and his sister at Moorhatch9

Stephen Silk, builder and family at Westbury7

Mary Ann Ottaway, dressmaker and sister at Kalmia8

Mary Ann was the daughter of Carmi Cobbett and would have lived at this house with

her sister Eliza Charlotte in her childhood.

This new house had been built by Mrs Saunders (the previous Mrs Isham Smith) and

eventually was demolished when Pares Close was built. When Pares retired in 1935 the

new vicar found this house too large and returned to the vicarage next to the church (the

Old Vicarage). This left the rejected new vicarage empty which falling into the hands

of the local agricultural committee on the outbreak of the war was used to house farm

workers. When these workers moved after the war St Mary’s Hill school used it as a

boarding annex until the demand for boarders ceased.

It does seem that apart from the 1841 returns the Censuses are perhaps more accurate with

regard to the order of houses and shops than had been previously thought.

Wardens Park Road, from Church Hill to its junction with Bury Lane, is a development of good

quality late Victorian and Edwardian houses which has remained virtually intact since it

commenced in 1898.It was originally known as Waldens Park Estate and built on land from

Abbey Farm, Waldens Farm and part of Horsell Nursery. The road is now part of the Horsell

Conservation Area with several properties included on the Local List.

It is perhaps appropriate to include here a few words in respect of the two schools established

at St Mary’s Hill during this period. As can be seen above (page 11) the house had been built

by Mrs Isham Smith by the end of 1899 and she married Arnold Saunders at the beginning of

1900 enabling him to set up his school which was established by the time of the 1901 census.

Saunders and his wife moved the school and some pupils to Aldeburgh Lodge, Suffolk by the

summer term of 1912

In the following year 1913 Gertrude and Alice Du Bochet (a family of Swiss origin) moved

their school from Gwy House, Chepstow to the now empty St Mary’s Hill, to re-found the

school as a girls’ school. Thereafter the school was always filled to its 140 capacity.

Prior to Gwy House, Gertrude had been at Royal Holloway followed by 6 years as headmistress

of Church High School in Bishop Auckland. She brought staff and pupils from Bishop

Auckland to Horsell, including Miss Athawes (who eventually became deputy head at St

Mary’s Hill). Gertrude always vetted pupils and received great loyalty from both staff and

pupils at the school, although she was rather strict.

Alice was pupil of Oscar Beringer and student at Sterne Conservatorium for Music, Berlin and

was piano teacher at all Gertrude’s schools. Alice was more gentle in her manner than her

sister and her nickname with the staff was Miss Puss. She is shown as the occupant of The

Cottage in Church Hill from 1922 in the Woking News and Mail Directories

Page 16: High Street and Church Hill Horsell

16

Jessie was kindergarten teacher at Deptford in 1901 and at Kensington in 1911 joining her

sisters by 1940 after the death of their mother in 1937.

The du Bochet sisters retired from St Mary’s Hill school in 1949. The new headmistress was

Miss Iris Auer who did not have the same success as the du Bochet sisters and the school closed

in Autumn 1967 when Miss Auer left for India. It is possible she may even have departed

before then. What is sure is that she founded a very successful school in India in 1980. In the

WN&M Directory for 1968 Mr P van Haght was shown living in St Mary’s Hill school for

what purpose is not known.

St Mary’s Hill was demolished and eventually replaced by 9 bungalows and 23 houses

constituting today’s Lych Way about 1972.

With the end of the available published Censuses in that for 1911 the continuing changes in

Church Hill and High Street can be followed in the Directories published by the Woking News

& Mail for Church Hill as follows.

There are other copies of these Directories. The Lightbox have 1908 and 1916 on disc

(indexed), 1916 on very crumbly paper, 1938, 1948, 1949/50, 1957, 1964 and 1968. The

History Centre have the discs somewhere behind the scenes and then complete from about

1921. Woking is also fully listed in the Kelly’s Guildford directories from 1900 until the

separate Woking ones start (these seem to be only at the British Library, which has the Woking

directories from 1904 but not perfect until about 1919).
