Lightning's constraints database, shared by all applications

throughout the design flow, ensures that the knowledge

and information added by the design engineer is maintained

throughout.

Lightning Modules

Lightning consists of six main modules: Constraint Manager,

Scenario Editor, Configuration Editor, Topology Editor,

P.R.Editor and SI Simulation. All are driven from a single

library describing the electrical behavior of devices, buffers,

IC packages and connectors, and even other boards.

� Constraint Manager is the control center, providing

access to all the other Lightning tools.

� Scenario Editor provides a 'what-if' scratchpad, adding

the functionality to create virtual design scenarios for

simulation to test design strategies, devise purely

experimental circuits or extract equivalent circuits from

the schematic or physical layout.

� Configuration Editor modifies and solves track cross-

sections, while allowing users to extract cross-sections to

save as templates and evaluate effects of proposed layer

stacks, track widths and the impact of track-to-track

spacing before physical layout.

� Topology Editor is used to constrain net topology

(physical connection patterns), for assignment of pre-defined

topologies, application of templates defined in the Scenario

Editor or definition of custom connection patterns.

� P.R.Editor provides complete placement and routing

capabilities, including fully-functional automatic / auto-

interactive place and route, applying comprehensive

physical and manufacturing rules.

� SI Simulation is the universal simulation engine used

throughout Lightning to provide Pre-layout, Post-layout and

concurrent verification for Signal Integrity. It uses an accurate

time domain simulation kernel to analyze reflection and

crosstalk effects, and to evaluate the true interconnect

timing, with the ability to compare actual timing with nominal.

Models need only be set up once for the complete Lightning

tool flow, and an exceptionally easy-to-use Simulation

Library Manager ensures that model set-up can be

completed efficiently, accurately and quickly.

Additional Modules

� EMC provides fast, full board screening for both radiation

(common mode and differential mode) and power integrity.

� Multiboard allows efficient analysis of the signal integrity

behavior of entire systems at the interface level, including

system-level analysis and equivalent circuit extraction for

differential signals, including board-to-board connector effects.

Lightning Bundles - Solutions for your Design Flow

Lightning provides flexibility in configuring your design flowwith a series of product bundles to meet your needs.� Lightning Scenario is an engineering-oriented pre-design-

entry and design-entry stage product for constraints definitionand verification. Graphical topology editing allows bothstandard and user-defined topologies to be specified andapplied. You can also import simulation kits containingready-made design scenarios, topology templates, modelsand simulation stimuli.

� Lightning P.R.Editor features high-speed routing andconstraint management for realizing the physical design

� Lightning Realize provides enhanced physical realization,including leading-edgel routing, placement and simulationcapabilities, simulation-driven routing and thermal analysis.Advanced and unique features include Intelligent DesignObjects, where lengthening patterns can be reshaped whileavoiding obstacles and maintaining the required delay.

� Lightning Inspect provides viewing of PCB designs andallows annotation of shapes and text to be added, whileprotecting design data. Lightning Inspect is used mainlyto facilitate design reviews.

� Lightning Verify is a post-layout verification environmentfor SI and timing analysis of PCBs. Interactive and batchsimulation is available along with physical DRCs / reportsand red-lining capability.

� Lightning SI Prolog for System Designer and Lightning

SI Epilog for Board Designer, provide direct access toSI simulation and verification.

Lightning supports both Windows XP/2000/NT and Unix nativeenvironments, allowing, for instance, mission- critical layoutand manufacturing solutions can be Unix-based while theengineering teams can take full advantage of the productivityof Microsoft WindowsTM.

Up-front 'what-if'capabilities, coupled with the ability to check signal integrityand change routing strategies concurrently, help avoidproblems early.Direct simulation links with System Designer using SI-Prologand Board Designer using SI-Epilog allow users workingwithin these tools to carry out push button simulation for high-speed applications using built-in dialogs. These integrationmodules also enable forward annotation of topologyconstraints. CSV import allows transfer of constraints andattributes from one design to another, providing the ability todefine and modify constraints in an external application suchas Microsoft ExcelTM.Design Variant Support as defined in CR-5000, meanselectrical nets and other design objects are automaticallyreconstructed to reflect the selected variant while still modelingelements common to all variants. Additionally, DRC can handlevariant checks between pads/outlines/drills and differentpositions for component variations.Graphical Topology Exploration and DefinitionLightning Scenario is the key application for achieving efficient,front-loaded design and avoiding downstream find-and-fix.Scenario Editor features an optimized graphical environmentto explore the design envelope and define constraints.Initially it can be used as a virtual scratchpad, even beforea schematic exists, to investigate device technologies,termination strategies, layer stack-up requirements and eye-diagram response of communication channels including basiccabling effects. Advanced Routing

Zuken's industry-leading router includes advanced functionalitysuch as trunking, Intelligent Design Objects, H-Tree routing andmuch more.

Trunking enables buses and differential pairs to be routed assingle objects, with Trunk End Routing (the routing that breaksout from trunks to component pins) created dynamically andoptimized as you route the trunk.

*NEW* - Detailed manual changes can be made to trunks,for example T-In and T-Out allow you to easily connect signalspartway along an existing trunk.

Designing tightly-constrained, balanced H-Trees is easy withthe H-Tree router, which provides an interactive routing solutionfor this commonly-used, low-skew topology. Length and skewcontrol is quick and simple using the interactive lengtheningto maximize the exploitation of available real estate.

Direct integration with Board Designer also means thatLightning can support build-up spacing rules, positive andnegative layers, non-round drill holes and pads with nocomponent pin.

Embedded On-line SI-Simulation and Verification

The same high-capability simulation is embedded withinConstraint Manager, Scenario Editor and Physical Prototyping,using a single, sophisticated and managed model library.Simulation results appear within Constraint Manager'sspreadsheet, together with constraints, for easy evaluation ofthe design's compliance.� Adaptive Simulation:

SI-Analysis of unplaced, placed, un-routed, or routed boardswith coupled or un-coupled transmission lines. The SI-simulator adapts automatically to the available design data.

� Time and Frequency Domain Analysis:Interactive time domain simulation for maximum waveformaccuracy coupled with frequency-domain results for deeperanalysis, including FFT, Impedance and S-Parameters.

� Lossy and Lossless Analysis:Lossy simulation includes both frequency-dependent andDC loss to model high-frequency channels accurately.Lossless simulation can also be performed if preferred.

� Batch Analysis:SI results (e.g. ringing and timing data) are determinedautomatically from the simulated waveforms and clearlydisplayed in the Constraint Manager's spreadsheet forcomprehensive verification.

� Eye Diagrams:Jitter can be easily evaluated by superimposing a maskrepresenting the limits of reliable operation on the generatedeye diagram. Advanced Eye Diagram stimulus options includeautomatic bit pattern generation and Gaussian or Uniform jitterdistribution.

Rapid EMC Analysis

This tightly-integrated, engineering-driven tool uses algorithmsbased on standards set by the UMR EMC Consortium, providingdifferential mode analysis, voltage and current driven commonmode radiation analysis, and power-bus de-coupling analysis.Deep integration within the CR-5000 tool suite eliminates theneed for design conversion, allows cross probing betweenanalysis results and physical layout, so that critical structurescan easily be highlighted. EMC analysis uses the samesimulation library as the rest of CR-5000 Lightning.

The versatility of Lightning EMC means the needs of bothengineers and EMC specialists are met. An EMC-focusedwhat-if cycle can be generated and performance assessedbefore the first prototype has been manufactured.� *NEW* Power Integrity Analysis

Power Integrity is vital to reliable performance of high-speedboards. Power Integrity analysis includes display of voltagemaps directly within physical layout to highlight likely hotspotsin the most easy to interpret form.
