OnJune28,1914,a19-year-oldSerbiannamedGavriloPrincipkilledArchdukeFranzFerdinand,whowastobetheemperoroftheAustria-HungaryEmpire.TheassassinationsetoffachainofeventsthatwouldleadtothestartofWorldWarI.Buttheseedsofthisterrible"GreatWar"hadbeenplantedlongbeforePrincipfiredthosefatalbullets.Europeby1914

From1814to1815,Austria,Prussia,Russia,EnglandandFrancemetattheCongressofVienna,ameeting,tosetupbordersandrulesforcountriesinEurope.However,100yearslater,by1914,EuropewasabouttobetornapartbytheGreatWar.

ProblemsbeganasaresultoftheFranco-PrussianWar(1870to1871).FrancewasdefeatedbyPrussia.FrancelostlandandhadtopaymoneytoPrussia.PrussiagrewstrongerandbecametheGermanEmpire,soFrancefeltitneededapartner.RussiaagreedtobeFrance'sallyin1892.EnglandwasalsoworriedGermanywasgettingtoostrong,soitbecameallieswithFranceandRussia.

Soonafter,Austria-HungaryandRussiawantedcontroloflandsintheBalkans.TheBalkansincludedseveralcountrieslikeSerbia,Greece,Montenegro,BulgariaandBosnia-Herzegovina.In1908,Austria-HungaryclaimedBosnia-Herzegovina,butSerbiafeltitshouldbepartofitscountry.TheGermanEmpiresupportedAustria-Hungary.ThisgrabforterritoryangeredSerbiaandalsoRussia.

Serbia,Greece,MontenegroandBulgariathenformedtheBalkanLeagueandinback-to-backBalkanwarswiththeOttomanTurks(1912and1913),theygotcontrolofmoreBalkanlandsawayfromtheOttomanEmpire.ThiswasseenasathreatbybothAustria-HungaryandRussia.

Austro-HungarianArchdukeFranzFerdinandwasagreatfriendofKaiserWilhelmofGermany.HemetwithhiminJune1914todiscussthetensesituationintheBalkans.Twoweekslater,onJune28,FranzFerdinandandhiswife,Sophie,cametoinspectthearmyinBosnia-Herzegovina.GavriloPrincip,whowaspartoftheYoungBosniamovementthathatedAustria-HungaryandwantedtojoinSerbia,learnedofthearchduke’svisit.SuppliedwithweaponsbyaSerbianrevolutionarygroupcalledtheBlackHand,PrincipandfiveotherstraveledtothecityofSarajevointimeforthearchduke’svisit.

Theroyalcouplewastouringthecityinanopencar.OneoftheSerbsthrewabombattheircar,butitrolledoffthebackofthevehicle,woundinganarmyofficerandsomebystanders.Laterthatday,thearchduke'scartookawrongturnnearwherePrinciphappenedtobestanding.Seeinghischance,Principfiredintothecar,shootingFranzFerdinandandSophieatpoint-blankrange.Hethenturnedthegunonhimself,butbeforehecouldfire,hewastackledandhelduntilthepolicearrived.Thearchdukeandhiswifediedwithinthehour.

Austria-HungarywantedtoshowtheBalkancountriesitwasstrongandwouldrespondtothisterriblecrime.However,RussiaalsowantedBalkanlandsandAustria-HungarywasnotpreparedforawarwithRussia.SotheemperorofAustria-Hungary,FranzJosef,wroteapersonallettertoKaiserWilhelmofGermanyaskingforhissupport.Wilhelmwroteback,promisingGermany’sfullsupport.

OnJuly23,Austria-HungarytoldtheSerbiangovernmenttowipeoutterroristorganizationswithinitsborders.ItalsodemandedtherighttoinvestigatewhowasresponsibleforFranzFerdinand’sassassination.Itthreatenedmilitaryactionifthesedemandswerenotmet.

SerbiaaskedRussiaforhelp.TheleadersoftheRussianEmpirewerealwayscalledtheczar.Now,theczarstartedgettinghisarmyready.Austria-HungarydeclaredwaronSerbiaonJuly28.OnAugust1,GermanydeclaredwaronRussia.TheGermanarmythenlauncheditsattack,movingthroughBelgium,onRussia’sally,

France.ThisattackonBelgiumbroughtEnglandintothewar.WhydidAustria-Hungaryaskfor

LondonRegiment,theKing’sRoyalRifleCorps.SymonslivedthroughWorldWarI.DearBert,

JustafewlinestoletyouknowIamalright,hopingyouarethesame.Atthepresenttime,weareindugouts.Theweatherissimplyawful,rainingdayafterdayandespeciallynightafternight.Totellyouthetruth,whilewritingthisletterIamwetthroughtotheskinwithnothingdrytochangeinto.Wehavegotourwinterfurcoatsandrubberboots,butthebootscausemorecursesthanyoucanimagine.

Forinstance,lastnightIwassentofftoselectdugoutsforourgroup,whichisnumber37.Itwaspitchdark,nolightallowedandinastrangeplace,wellhonestlyIfelloveratleast20timesandgotsmotheredinmudfromheadtofeet.Ontopofthat,Igotwetbecauseitrainedinbuckets.WhileIwasinspectingthedugoutsthismorning,toseeiftheywere"comfortable"enoughforthemen,Iwassurroundedbypeoplesaying"Sergeantthis"and"Sergeantthat."Somepeoplesaid,"Howcanyouexpectpeopletoliveinthis?"Evenworse,theyhadoccupiedashelterthathadcollapsed[fallendown]overnight.Theytookshelterunderatreefrom2a.m.afterlookingformeforabouthalfanhour,butcouldn’tfindme,becausetheonlythingthatcouldgetmeupaftersettlingdown,ifyoucancallitthat,wouldbeaGermanshellandthenI’dhavenootheroptionbuttomove.

WhileinthetrencheslastweekJohnandIwereuptoourkneesinwaterandgotourrubberbootshalffull.Theline[war]isabitquietlatelyandonlynowandagaindowegetashelling[fighting],butonegetsusedtoit.That,togiveyouanidea,islikesittingatPaddington[trainstation]andhearingtheenginesscreech.

AfterourstretchthistimeIshallbelookingforwardtoashortleaveforIhavebeenherenearlythreemonthsnowandwestandagoodchance.WellImustnowconclude.
