High schools should work with eighth-grade feeder sites to do joint
promotion and marketing to families. Newsletters, web site posts,
school messenger and direct mail are all encouraged. Connect with
student placement (Tiffany or Nagashia) for help with mailing lists.
7
High School Tours
• Each high school is expected to offer tours October-January
• Individual high schools will determine their own dates and times
• Tours should take place during the day and after school to
accommodate working families
• Tour opportunities should be promoted on high school web sites
• Tours are open to all families – questions about enrollment
chances should be directed to Student Placement staff
• Manageable tour sizes are determined by school sites
• High schools should use student ambassadors to assist with
tours, but make sure a content expert tags along
• High schools are welcome to work with feeder schools to conduct
tours of entire eighth grade classes (optional)

HS Attendance Areas and Pathways
• The eighth grade site where a student attends does not
determine high school placement
• High school options are determined by home address
• The pathways for high school are Roosevelt Spanish
Immersion and South Open - This applies to students at
Barton, Marcy and Anwatin. Note: Families must proactively
request the pathway.

environment, families who live in elementary
school attendance areas 1B and 1C in north
Minneapolis (north of Olson Memorial Highway,
south of Dowling and west of the Mississippi River)
and qualify for free/reduced priced lunch
may request to attend Southwest High School and
receive transportation (see map).
Note: This option is available until the
school request deadline, February 28, 2015.

What’s new for the 2015-16 school
year?
13
Go-To Student Pass
• Program has expanded to include out-
of-zone students (including open
enrollment) who attend under-enrolled
schools: Edison, Henry, North and
Roosevelt
• There is current discussion to give
passes to all students who qualify
(more than two miles away or
free/reduced walk zone) regardless of
school and zone – Stay tuned!
14
Attendance Area 1G • Students will grandfather to their current school
and will switch to their new community school at
transition grades, 6 and 9
• Elementary School – Webster
• Middle School – Northeast
• High School – Edison
15
English Learners (EL) High School Placement
• New-to-district English learners at WIDA Levels 1 and 2 who live in
Zone 1 will be placed at Edison regardless of age
• New-to-district English learners at WIDA Levels 1 and 2 who live in
Zones 2 and 3 have the option to attend Wellstone or Edison
• New-to-district English learners at WIDA Levels 3, 4, and 5 will be
placed at MPS comprehensive high schools, based on address,
regardless of age or credit attainment
Note:
• If students are not making progress toward graduation, counselors can
work with the student and family to transition to other programs to meet
their needs (e.g. Adult Basic Ed)
• Multilingual and College and Career Readiness will collaborate to help
school counselors identify appropriate options.
• The only students who will be transferred to Wellstone from other MPS
high schools are WIDA Level 1 and 2 students who are new to the
country (or have left and returned) within the past five years.
• English learners who have been in an MPS school for two years or more
should attend a comprehensive high school
16
Special Education
• Students in federal settings 1 or 2 should go through the school
request process to select a school.
• Students receiving services in federal settings 3 or 4 are served
by citywide programs and will be placed in the appropriate
program during their transition meeting.
• Special Education placement is based on the needs of the
student, home address and space availability.
