@ Reddam
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Our week began with vibrant colour and wild hair as the students from Kindergarten to
Year 6 took part in the Crazy Hair Day to raise money for the Centennial Parklands. As al-
ways, the students and teachers put in a great deal of effort to colour and style their hair
in support of this fundraising drive. Thank you everyone who donned creative hairstyles
and to the families of Reddam House for their gold coins contributions to the event. We
raised $700 for Centennial Park which is wonderful.
Later in the term, Reddam House will be hosting a Trivia Evening in Adelaide Hall to fur-
ther raise funds for the Centennial Parklands. Always a tremendous amount of fun, the
evening promises to be an evening of laughter, creativity and excitement. More infor-
mation and tickets will soon be available.
On Tuesday, our school was abuzz as various literacy workshops took place for the dif-
ferent year groups as part of the many elements of enrichment of our curriculum. The
students enjoyed the interaction with well known author and Illustrator Dr. Cameron
Stelzer in their sessions which ranged from learning about sensational stories to descrip-
tive writing. The students were highly enthused by the day and continue to build on the
skills taught in class. Thank you to our librarian, Ms Claudia Perez, who put the day to-
gether for the students and teachers.
On Wednesday 26 August, the students in Kindergarten to Year 2 will host their Annual
Portfolio Day at school where parents and caregivers are invited to join the students and
peruse their portfolios of work as well as visit their various classrooms. The morning is al-
ways a lovely opportunity for the students to show off their growing skills and take pride
in displaying their work for their families. I look forward to welcoming you into our class-
rooms on Wednesday.
On Thursday next week, some of our very talented athletes will be taking part in the
ASISSA Athletics Carnival where they will compete against other top athletes from
schools in the association with the aim of progressing to the next step towards a CIS
team. I wish all the best to the following students who will represent Reddam House: Kate

High School Musical Rehearsals
Percussion Competition
Incursions and Excursions
The students in Year 3 – 6 who are taking part in the annual musical production: Disney’s
‘High School Musical Jr’ are working hard in the afternoons refining their various scenes and
songs. The performances will be taking place at NIDA Parade Theatres on 2 and 3 September
and tickets are now available for purchase on www.ticketek.com.au. Tickets always sell fast
and so I urge you not to hesitate; book early to avoid disappointment. With over 120 students
in the cast this year, we are sure to see a jam packed theatre for both performances.
With Father’s Day coming up soon, Reddam House will hold its Father’s and Special Friends’
stall on Friday 4 September where students can purchase gifts for their fathers and important
male figures in their lives. It is always really exciting for the students to be able to choose their
own gift and take it home already wrapped in preparation for a big surprise at home. Stu-
dents who would like to take part should hand their money in to the class teacher by
Wednesday 2 September.
The Jewish Studies students will enjoy a fantastic incursion next week when the Shofar Factory
will be coming to Reddam House on Thursday 27 August. Participants will gain new insights in-
to the history and significance of the Shofar and its role on the holiday of Rosh Hashanah.
As we head into the weekend with promises of sun and shine, I wish all the sports teams com-
peting around Sydney good luck and thank the coaches for their ongoing contribution to
the Sports Department at Reddam House.

Last week Kindergarten had an Oceanographer come in and visit them. We learnt about the
role of an Oceanographer, the types of equipment they use and all about the different ani-
mals they study and see. We even spoke about the deep, dark ocean which can be very
warm and it has been discovered that this is due to underwater volcanoes.
The children then each had the opportunity to look under real microscopes where we saw
copepod, zoo plankton and crab larvae.
The presentation made comparisons between real creatures and the SpongeBob
SquarePants characters, such as SpongeBob (sea sponge), Gary (sea snail) and Sheldon
Plankton (copepod). Unfortunately we didn’t get to observe Patrick Star (sea star) as the sea-
gulls of Balmoral beach had already eaten him for breakfast.
A big thank-you goes to Giselle Firme for taking the time to come in and allow our students to
have this most wonderful experience.

KINDERGARTEN
Year 1 went to the Royal Botanic Gardens this week. We saw some fantastic examples of ani-
mal and human shelters.
Firstly, we all had a photo out the front of the gardens. Then we went for a walk around be-
fore having morning tea.
After that, we went to the education place and had a look at some nests and termite
mounds. Then we did a little nature hunt where we had to use our senses to find hidden
things in the garden.
The next thing we did was collect some sticks, leaves, bark, branches and flowers in our
brown paper bag. We walked around the Wishing Tree and made wishes.
Afterwards, we used our nature collection to make our own shelter. Some people made
nests, burrows, caves, tents and spider webs.
Finally it was lunch time. The ibis kept trying to steal our food!
The last thing we did was go for a long walk to the Opera House. We saw lots of pollution in
the water. How sad!
It was a great day and we all had loads of fun, but I was so tired! Constructed by 1R
Mae Angus- I loved seeing the possum hiding in the tree.
Weston Budd- I liked finding the camouflaged objects.
Hollie Cocran - I enjoyed making shelters with the twigs and leaves
Sienna Smith-I loved all the animals.
William Barouch- I enjoyed everything it was the BEST day!
Mariana Machkevitch- the flowers were beautiful and making our own shelters was fun!

YEAR 1
Year 2 students have been focusing on reading. Each year The Children’s Book Council of
Australia focuses on the literature published in Australia in the previous year. The celebration
of Book Week is committed to spreading the word about children’s literature and encourag-
ing the pleasure of reading. This year the Book Week theme, Books Light Up Our World has in-
spired our students to reflect on the ways we connect to what we choose to read. Through-
out the week the students were engaged in a variety of literature based activities. We partic-
ularly enjoyed the author visit by Dr Cameron Stelzer and look forward to reading more of his
stories. The students also listened to Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories, reflected on their meaning
and created new endings for the stories. We then enjoyed using technology to create our
own stories. Year 2R immersed themselves in a variety of books for our assembly presentation.
We believe “Books for pleasure! Books for fun! Books for everyone!

YEAR 2
This week the Year 3 students were beside themselves with excitement as they got a little bit
crazy and talked with a Doctor who likes rats! And not just your average household rats, but
rats… who are pirates… who like pie! The beginning of the week highlighted the Year 3 stu-
dents’ interest in raising money for a good cause, as they went wild teasing, spraying, gelling
and glittering their locks into all different shapes and designs. Students were inspired by the
theme and were very pleased to be able to make a contribution to assist development of
The Ian Potter Children’s Wild Play Garden in Centennial Park.
As the week continued the students were thrilled to receive a visit from popular author and
illustrator, Dr Cameron Stelzer. The good ‘doctor’ inspired the students with his Sensational
Stories and drawing units on ‘How to Create Cool Characters’ and ‘How to Draw Dragons.’
The Year 3 students had a fantastic time and have become quite fond of ‘Pie Rats’ and their
exciting adventures.
Imaginative, ingenious and inspirational work this week Year 3, keep it up!

YEAR 3
Year 4 has been learning about exercise and keeping
the body healthy, by investigating the different sys-
tems of the body and how they react to exercise.
They have learnt that our bodies can benefit from
regular exercise. Those who are active will:
have stronger muscles and bones
have a leaner body because exercise helps con-
trol body fat
be less likely to become overweight
decrease the risk of developing type 2
diabetes
possibly lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels
have a better outlook on life.
Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, those who are physically fit sleep
better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges — from running to
catch a bus to studying for a test.

YEAR 4
On Tuesday, the students in primary school had a visit from author and illustrator Dr Cameron
Stelzer. Cameron conducted 4 great workshops about writing and Illustration. Cameron
talked about his books and shared the steps in getting a story published. It takes a lot of
drafts before this happens! Students had the opportunity to do some of their own writing and
Illustration. We are hoping to discover some authors of the future. Thanks Cameron.
LIBRARY
WriteOn is an annual writing competition open to all primary students in Years 1 to 6. Using a
photograph as a stimulus, students are asked to compose an imaginative piece of writing
based on the photograph. This competition provides primary students with the opportunity to
become published authors and the most outstanding entries from each year will be pub-
lished in an anthology devoted to the competition. Every year, Reddam House aims to in-
clude some of the most outstanding pieces in the competition to showcase the amazing de-
scriptive writing talents of their students.
Every student entered in the competition, regardless of their age, was required to respond to
the same image; that being the image featured below. All entries were also required to be
imaginative-style in terms of their writing. To coincide with their work on descriptive writing,
Year 5 Extension English were provided with the image and responded accordingly, using the
most amazing descriptive language. It was a difficult decision but the two people whose en-
tries will be sent through next week as Reddam House representatives are Harry Nunn-Price
and Isabella Devine. As you can see below, both students have used such a varied of won-
derful, descriptive language and have gone to extreme lengths to showcase their great writ-
ing abilities.
Against the pale fog, the gloomily patterned flying machine soared like a golden eagle. This
colossal bird would hover above the golden sanded, rocky beach. It would be the kind of
the sky. All birds would bow down to it. The eclipse-shape of the grand balloon would fight
against the sharp winds without even trying. When they would come into contact, the vehi-
cle would say in it's own language, 'move aside' and the helpless winds would obey the or-
der. Inside, the two people courageously advance and make their way through the clouds
too like birds. At times, the strong basked would sway to and fro; a perfect spot for adven-
tures. By Harry Nunn-Price
Four figures. All as still as statues. Only their hair ripples in the wind. One consists of an average
-sized child, a girl, with a while dress and no shoes. The other, a boy in overalls, also has no
shoes. They stand straight, their hands on their hips, staring up at the blimp with confused yet
annoyed eyes. They wonder what on earth the huge body of the blimp above them is, and
they're irritated as to why there are two men up inside and not them. There is an air of curiosi-
ty above what the bubble of air that lay above them actually is. An unknown mystery. By Isabella Devine.
And....one student who in the grand scheme of things is most definitely a 'highly commend-
ed' is Logan Wright as this piece really showcased his improved descriptive writing.
Higher and higher it gets, launching off the golden, soft sand. The two men inside get smaller
and smaller, feeling their way through the crystal, clean sky as they float up and beyond.
Quickly, and most suddenly, the blimp then stopped in the atmosphere, laying there as if it
was an angel sleeping among the clouds. Most diligently, two heads they bob up with joy
and excitement like bullets being popped out of a gun. Each man is having the time of their
lives. The two propellers then each burst out massive gushes of air, bossing one another
around, controlling the movement of the machine. By Logan Wright

In Stage 3, Mathematics we have been using the Singapore Method to solve problems involv-
ing Fractions. This method is used to help students visualize different ways to solve these prob-
lems, particularly when working backwards.
Some students were involved in the fourth stage of the Maths Olympiad and we congratulate
them on their efforts. The problems are challenging and their participation and perseverance
indicates their desire to achieve.
