Rusty Charpias firstmission in his inauguralseason at Brookland-Cay-ce for the most part has been accomplished.

We came in knowingwe couldnt build the worldin two months this sum-mer, but we could get ourplayers in shape, Charpiasaid. And we worked themhard in conditioning, and Ithink they are in the bestshape they have been in.They are stronger and fast-er already. You can only doso much in two months,and we did as much as we

could, so thats a win forus.

With a team that wontwo games the past twoseasons, Charpia said cele-brating the small victoriesis key to building the Bear-cats confidence whichhe hopes will turn into pos-itive results on the field.

Theres no magicalspeech or great slogan thatcan turn a place aroundovernight; were just goingto fight mini-battles andcount those as victories,the coach said.

In practice, the approachhas produced the desired

effect.Were getting pushedharder than we ever have

been, said defensive endTariq Byrd, one of 20 se-niors on the squad. Ourcoaches continue to pushus to our limits, and even

when you want to quit, theymake us feel that we can domore.

Added offensive line-man McFarland Murph:Its a weapon we have thisseason. Were the sameteam we used to be becausethis coach really inspiresus.

The biggest differenceon the field could be theathleticism of the linemenon either side of the ball.The strength and staminadeveloped through an in-tense conditioning pro-gram means the Bearcatsshould be more physical upfront. Shannon Washing-ton, who plays on bothlines, said that will lead to a

more productive offenseand a more stingy defense.

In 2010, the Bearcats av-eraged 236 yards and 12points per game and al-lowed an average of 342

yards and 31points, finish-ing 2-9.

The team is convincedthis years outcome will bedifferent.

The most importantthing is to improve each

week and be ready for theregion, Charpia said.

His team has a headstart, because the Bearcatsalready are winning.

Last season, Lexingtonagain demonstrated it hasthe skill and athleticism tocompete with the statesbest football teams.

This season, a deter-mined group of seniorsaims to prove the Wildcatsare the states best.

With the season we hadlast year, weve earnedsome high expectations,and we embrace them,second-year coach Scott

Earley said.With 13 starters return-

ing from a 10-4 squad, in-cluding the nucleus of bothoffense and defense, the

Wildcats are equipped tomeet those expectations.

Shaq Roland, the statesscoring leader with 36touchdowns and nearly3,000 all-purpose yards in2010, said having the sea-son end in the state semifi-nals with a loss to Byrnes

was both disappointing

and inspiring.It didnt feel good to end

the season with a loss, but itlet us know that we can beon that level, said Roland,

who has committed toUSC. I knew that we weregoing to come back withsome fire to us, and it feelsgood to be out here now.

At wide receiver, run-ning back, kick returnerand defensive back, Ro-land was a playmaker for

Lexington and a catalystfor its offense.

The Wildcats again willemploy Roland at severalpositions, but Earley saidthe biggest impact willcome from the total pack-age on the field.

Were expanding every-one elses role, he said.The players we line up

with him can take the pres-sure off Shaq, force our op-ponents to decide whether

to key on him and taketheir chances with the oth-er guys or play himhonest.

Added running backKevin Miller: Everybodyis more well-rounded thisseason, and well definitelydo better this season if ev-erybody does more anddoes it well.

The powerhouse offenseaveraged 32 points and justunder 400 yards per gamein 2010, but Lexingtonsstingy defense often wasthe key to victory. On thatside, leading tacklersChase Austin and Jesse

Williams are among thereturnees.

Austin said the momen-tum gained during the

postseason carriedthrough to offseason work-outs and preseason prac-tice and has led to a moreprepared and capableteam.

Lexington is well on theway to being the best teamit can be, in hopes thatcome December, the Wild-cats can earn the title ofbest team in the state.

By the end of the 2010 season, the WhiteKnoll Timberwolves had laid claim toschool history on two counts.

With a 7-4 recordand an appearance inthe first round of the Class 4A Division Iplayoffs, the Timberwolves notched themost wins in a season its first winningcampaign since it began play in 2004 and its first back-to-back playoff appear-ances.

We definitely have momentum comingfrom that success, third-year coach Gor-don Walters said. And we definitely wantto keep that going. Theres no easy way to

do that.So the Timberwolves know they are

looking at a difficult road.The squad lost two of its leading rush-

ers, Tyrell Grant and Justin Rose, whoeach rushed for more than1,000 yards lastseason. But Walters said the Timber-

wolves are prepared to adjust.We used to have to hold on to the ball a

lot (and rush it). This year, we are going tobe more (versatile) with our offense, Wal-ters said.

Quarterback Jake Beckett can be ex-pected to put the ball in the air moreas theTimberwolves try to strike a better bal-ance on offense.

Walters credited a tremendous groupof seniors with keeping the squad fo-cused as it prepares for its follow-up act.

The seniors have done a great job sofar of keeping the team together and ontask and we have a group of high-char-

acter, very motivated kids, Walters said.They all really want to have anotherstrong season.

The kids, I think, have started to ex-pect to win, and thats a good thing thatthey have that belief and they are puttingin the work for it. Its a process, and youcant skip any of the steps.

In each of the past two seasons, theTimberwolves have obtained a clear viewof what the next step is as they faced thedefending champion in the first round ofthe playoffs.

That shows us where we need to be,Walters said.

And though Walters said his team likesto keep its goals private, there next bench-mark on the list is clear: the programsfirst playoff victory.

The Eagles football teamreturns 19 starters from asquad that finished 9-3 and

made the second round ofthe playoffs with mostlysophomores and first-yearstarters. They quieteddoubters last year after los-ing all but three startersfrom a 2009 squad that setthe school record for wins.

The Eagles do not havemany detractors now, se-nior quarterback KelvinHarris said.

And they will need theirhealth, because depth is anissue at several positions.

Were further alongnow than we have been be-cause of the number ofstarters we have back, but

we do still have some chal-lenges, coach Ben Free-man said.

Pontoon, a third-yearstarter, dropped about 15pounds and added speed.

While that should buoy therunning game, Freemansaid the Panthers mighthave to employ a finesse-oriented attack early in theseason.

We might go more forquick passes, hope that the

linemen can just hit andrun, and not have to be asphysical at first, he said.Hopefully, by the timethey get into region play,they can handle all of it.

Though the Panthersnew linemen are biggerand faster than in previous

years, they are learning thesystem. When they are able

to pair knowledge with theability to execute, Pelionsoffense should be fast andpowerful.

Were going to havemore team speed than peo-ple have seen in the past

years, Freeman said. The

caliber of athletes that wehave now has given usthat.

Pelion has several op-tions in the backfield andreceiving corps. Pontoonhopes that by making him-self the primary target ofopposing defense, oppor-tunities will become avail-able for his teammates.

When that happens,Huggins said, were goingto make more plays, biggerplays.

On defense, the Pan-thers remain sound, withleading tacklers DonaldMartin and John Kincaid

returning to anchor the un-it. Transfer Jonathan Mag-daleno, a fullback and line-man, should contribute fora defensive front that is

After one season underChad Leaphart, the Swan-sea Tigers are believers.

We dont want to playhim every down, but hestoo good a player to havestanding next to you on thesideline, Leaphart said.

Because the Tigers havehad a year to learn Lea-pharts playbook, theyshould be much more pre-pared than they were lastseason.

Chavis established him-

self as a leader during off-season conditioning, as hewas the most consistent inattending workouts. Afterundergoing surgery to re-pair a torn labrum in histhrowing shoulder in De-cember, Chavis diligentrehab allowed him to par-ticipate in passing campsin the summer. He is backto full strength and readyto start in Week 1s match-up against Wagener-Sal-

ley.I felt OK about the re-

sults last year, and I knowwe can build off it becausemost of the guys out herehave been playing togeth-er for a long time, Chavissaid. So now we havechemistry and a good sys-tem that we understand.Were going to able to exe-cute more and keep eachother from the mental mis-takes, too. So we should bemore successful.

Added Brown: We haveall the tools that we need to

be a better team than we were last year. We justhave to be committed tousing them.
