He gives us a lotof options and makes us hard todefend,” said Wesleyan headcoach Franklin Pridgen.Karempelis has 638yards rushing withnine touchdowns. He also has areceiving touch-down and a specialteams touchdownthat came in thefirst game of theseason againstClarkston (apunt blockreturned threeyards for the score).

The Buford Wolves areback at it again this season, undefeated and ranked No. 1 inClass 2A. Their offense is led byrunning back Storm Johnson andall-purpose back Cody Getz (pic-tured). Johnson has 582 yards andnine touchdowns on the season. Hisbest effort came on Sept. 26 against

As usual, Gwinnett County is full of tal-ented football teams. Buford is ranked

No. 1 in Class 2A and is just as dominantas ever. North Gwinnett (No. 4) andGrayson (No. 7) are both ranked in the top10 in Class 5A. Collins Hill is undefeated. There is no doubt Gwinnett County hassome of the state’s most talented players onboth sides of the football.

Much of Gwinnett County’s talent is atrunning back.

Parkview senior Brandon Jacobs leadsthe group with over 900 yards rushing and 13touchdowns through six games. The key toParkview’s season has been evident. WhenJacobs is successful, so are the Panthers. When Jacobs was held to 82 yards and notouchdowns against Collins Hill in Week 1,the Panthers lost 30-9. Jacobs bounced backin Week 2 against Chattahoochee with 190yards and three touchdowns, and so did thePanthers, winning 49-12. Jacobs’s biggestgame of the season came in a 65-20 win overMeadowcreek, as he ran for 217 yards andfour touchdowns. He also plays linebackerfor the Panthers and had a team-high 15 tack-les in a 24-22 loss to Grayson.

Grayson is 6-0, ranked No. 7 in Class5A and leads all of Gwinnett County withover 1,800 yards rushing. Ean Pemberton isthe Rams’ leading rusher with 869 yards andeight touchdowns. Pemberton’s best game ofthe season came against Parkview on Sept.26, as he racked up 253 yards rushing andtwo touchdowns.

At midseason mark, Gwinnett County stars lead some of state’s best teamsDecatur with 182 yards and two scores.Meanwhile, Getz has done a lot of every-

thing for the Wolves this season. WhenBuford traveled to Texas in Week 1 to

play Mansfield Timberview, Getzhad 139 all-purpose yards, includ-ing 64 yards rushing and twotouchdowns, as well as a punt

return for a touchdown. Getzhas a total of 10 touch-

downs this season.Collins Hill has

its offense to thank for a 5-0 start with an average of

26 points per game.Charles Perkins leads

the Eagles’attack onthe ground with554 yards andseven touch-downs. Perkins’s

best gamecame in a 20-16 win over

Chattahoocheeon Sept. 12, as he posted 174 yardsand three touchdowns, including agame-winning 2-yard score with2:35 remaining in the game.Quarterback Michael Box has been

just as solid for the Eagles this seasonwith 721 passing yards, six touchdowns

and only one interception. Box also has100 yards rushing and one touchdown. His best game came in a 49-28 win over

North Forsyth on Sept. 26, totaling 291 totalyards and four touchdowns. “He gets betterevery week,” said head coach Billy Wells.

LEADING THE WAY …Much of last season’s Class 5A state run-

ner-up North Gwinnett’s success can beattributed to third-year starting quarterbackMichael Tamburo, who is 28-5 in his Bulldogcareer. “He makes everybody around himbetter,” said head coach Bob Sphire. NorthGwinnett is 4-1 with its sole loss coming outof state to Byrnes (S.C.) on Aug. 29. Tamburois a dual-threat quarterback. He has 753 yardspassing with five touchdowns and 232 rush-ing with four touchdowns this season.Tamburo’s best game came in a 40-24 winover Mill Creek on Sept. 26, as he recorded149 yards passing with two touchdowns, and155 yards rushing with one touchdown.

If anyone can attest to the importance ofkarate, it is Amir. His father never pushedhim to follow in his footsteps but it did nottake long for him to get involved.

“Me, my brother and my sister trained inthe garage when we first moved to the States,”he recalls “I was around three years old.”

Amir has amassed nine national cham-pionships in his career and is now working asa teacher, just like his father.

THE STUDENTS … Many of UKF’s students have had great

success as well. Hoang Nguyen is one of them;he finished at the top of several categories atthe Citrus Cup earlier this year in Miami.

“When they put the medal around me, Ifelt like ‘wow I can’t believe I did it,’”Nguyen said.

Jervis Cowan is another student whohas been involved with UKF for quite

Martial Arts are a way of life for SeanLamei. The Iranian native has been

practicing for 46 years. So when he came tothe United States years ago, opening a schoolto impart his knowledge of martial arts toothers was almost a given. His school,Ultimate Karate and Fitness, has been openfor eight years.

“We just wanted to have the school,”Lamei says. “We didn’t even think about itbeing successful financially or not.”

UKF has had lots of success with Lameiand his son Amir, a nine-time national cham-pion, running the show. Under their direc-tion, they have helped to lead numerous stu-dents to medals at national tournaments. Butthat’s not the most important thing to them.At UKF, discipline is the main focus, a phi-losophy that instructors and students alikeagree has helped shape them not just asfighters, but also as people.

some time. Like Nguyen, he has manyaccolades to point to, such as a SouthCarolina state championship in 2005. Buthe is more concerned about the life lessonshe has learned at UKF.

“I’ve always been disciplined, and I’vealways been athletic,” Cowan says. “Martialarts help you combine [the qualities].”

WORKING HARD …Training isn’t easy. Sean makes sure that

students are pushed hard, stating, “Every daythey come to class, they have to learn.” Butupon listening to the students, one will findthat the hard work pays off.

“We want to make sure every studentexcels,” Amir adds. “Every three monthswe have a belt testing, and it’s our respon-sibility to make sure our students are readyto test. We want to make sure every studentdeserves that belt. If you get a belt and you

Ultimate Karate and Fitness instructors provide knowledge, experiencedon’t feel you deserved it, I would becheating them.”

Fardad Hajirostani, who has wonnumerous medals in his 13 years, would nothave it any other way.

“If the teachers go too easy, the kidswill take advantage,” he says. “They don’tdo that here.”

With committed teachers, satisfied stu-dents and hard work, it seems like they justmight be on to something at UKF.

“Karate helps you to stay and bend, letthe wave and wind go passing by and thenyou stand up again,” Sean says. “You neverbreak; you go for it, you fight for it. Younever give up in karate.”

OCTOBER 8-14, 2008 SCORE GWINNETT I 05G

When the Milton Eagles go into RaiderValley on Friday night to take on the

Walton Raiders, more will be on the line thanjust Walton’s 11-game home winning streak. The Eagles (4-1, 3-1) will try to stake theirclaim to first place in Region 6-AAAAA bydefeating the undefeated and reigning regionchampion Raiders (5-0, 4-0).

After losing to Campbell in Week 2, Miltonhas been dominant in its last three contests, outscoring Wheeler,Alpharetta and Centennial bya combined score of 124-33. For the season, theEagles are averaging nearly 40 points per game. They are spearheaded by running back ToneyWilliams; the Tennessee commit has alreadyrushed for over 1,000 yards this year. HelpingWilliams on offense will be quarterback Wil Perryand receiver A.J. Canara. Also, linebacker BlakeFegan is a part of a big-play Eagle defense.

Walton has an outstanding running backin Michael Boydston, who also has over1,000 rushing yards this season. QuarterbackRay Rayburn and receiver Price Garrett arehigh-powered weapons for the Raiders aswell. Defensively, Scott Willoch and DavidPaulsen lead a Walton team that is giving upjust 12 points per game.

These two teams have not met since2005 when Walton won 17-0. In fact, Miltonhas not beaten Walton since 1994. This willbe the Eagles’ best chance to end that streakas well as Walton’s home winning streak andmake a push for a region title. Meanwhile,Walton will look to defend its region title, asthe Raiders continue their push for an unde-feated regular season.

Two 1,000-yard rushers meet on 790Friday night’s game between the Chamblee

Bulldogs and Southwest DeKalbPanthers at North DeKalb Stadium will go along way in determining who will make theplayoffs out of Region 6-AAAA. TheBulldogs (4-1, 3-1) come into the game hav-ing dropped only one region contest thisyear, while the Panthers (4-1, 4-0), alongwith Marist, sit atop Region 6-AAAA.Marist beat Chamblee 14-13 and, at the time,it was viewed as a setback for the Bulldogs. But after Marist later defeated regionfavorite Tucker 38-0, Chamblee’s loss does-n’t seem quite as bad.

Chamblee will look to further solidify itsplayoff position with a win over SouthwestDeKalb. To do that, they will depend on therunning of Warren Norman and the versatili-ty of receiver Darius Jones. Additionally,Garrett Williams is one of the most efficient

quarterbacks in DeKalb County. Chamblee’sdefense has only allowed an average of 5.6points per game and defensive end ArtemusNorman is a terror.

Southwest DeKalb will counter with astifling defense of its own that has shut outits last three opponents. Allen Stripling is aplayer to watch for the Panthers. On offense, head coach Buck Godfrey’s team features abruising running game led by MichaelJohnson and Kendrun Malcome. ThePanthers can also pass the ball, as quarter-back Daniel Litt and receiver JacobyMitchell form a nice tandem. In two of theirfinal three regular-season games, thePanthers play Marist and Tucker, whileChamblee has Tucker and Miller Grove left,so a win is important for both teams.

Michael Rosser prevented theshutout with a fourth-quarter 20-yard touchdown run. Berkmar’s defense couldn’t containBrice Smith, who went for 143 yards on 34 carries. The loss brought the Patriots’ record to2-3 on the season. The team had a bye last Friday, and the next game for Berkmar will beagainst Meadowcreek on the road this Friday. The Comets scored early knockout blows with a fake punt thatwent for a score and a 40-yard direct snap to Aaron Wimberly on a fourth-down conversion. The 45-13 loss to Parkview last Friday was highlighted by an inspired effort from DianteDrake. Drake’s 206 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns (80 and 75 yards) weren’t nearlyenough to keep up with the Tigers’ offense, however, but his performance should give headcoach Ed Stokes something to build on for the Black Knights’ upcoming game hosting Shilohon Friday. The offense should get a boost as the team gets Malcolm Moulton back from anearly-season suspension. … The softball team took its 2-5 Region 8-AAAAA record to the regiontournament, which started on Monday at Dacula.
