Introduction
Streptococcus pneumoniae
• Is a medically important pathogen
That causes a number of
community- acquired infections
• chronic bronchitis• otitis media• acute bacterial
sinusitis• pneumonia

CAUSE OF MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN
DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Thailand
Infections caused by resistant can be difficult to treat, resulting in greater risk of
death
Pneumococci resistant to more than three separate classes of antibiotics are
considered to be multidrug resistant
IntroductionMDR-SP
(multidrug-resistant S. pneumoniae)
have been isolated from both adults and children
They are resistant to:Penicillin
Clindamycincotrimoxazole erythromycin
Colonization rates are high in children aged
less than 5 years
Introduction
Antibiotic-resistant strains
Is attributed to antimicrobial acquisition
or inappropriate use of
antibiotics
S. Pneumonia e that
possesses horizontal gene
transfer
Little is known about the epidemilology
and antibiotic resistance pattern of nasal colonization S.
pneumoniae in healthy children in
Thailand
This mechanism allows the acquisition of antibiotic-
resistant genes which increases the resistance to a
variety of antibiotics.
¨The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of carriage rate, the antibiotic sensitivity profile and the
genetic diversity of S. pneumoniae isolated from Thai
children¨.

Las colonias neumocócicas sospechosas
fueron recogidas y
se identificados por tinción de

Susceptibilidad a los antibióticos
Método de antibiograma por disco difusión
Para microorganismos de crecimiento rápido
Incapacidad de predecir la
sensibilidad porque esta puede presentar
resistencia
Estudios epidemiológicos
Se debe realizar un
cultivo puro

CONCLUSIONS
• It is necessary to realize this worldwide study to see the prevalencia of the multiple drug resistance of the streptococcus pneumoniae and to try a treatment for this.
• It is important to realize this type of epidemiological studies since the increase of diseases caused for streptococcus pneumoniae is worrying worldwide
• The multidrug resistance number is increased every day, is important to research more about the risk factors and lay down what are the causes more frequently submitted, in this way it´s posible reduce the prevalence of this
• In the treatment of infections caused for S. Pneumoniae is important to know wich are the resistant antibiotic and search other options, for example the ceftriaxone is a good option because all the isolates are sensitive
