Description

General

Canalis KTA trunking is designed to feed and distribute high power in industrial, commercial or service buildings. Thestandard range is IP 52 (IP 54 as an option). This trunking has a compact design, namely with plated conductors insidea metal enclosure. The isolated conductor bars are made of aluminium. The range is divided into 7 ratings from 1000 to4000 A. The insulation used on the conductors is halogen-free 130°C class B polyester.

The live conductors are made up of 1 or 2 bars per phase, with paralleling ensured at each junction. The trunking has4 conductors for the 3-pole + neutral version (cross-sectionof the neutral equal to the cross-section of the phases). The metal enclosure in prelacquered galvanised sheetsteel (RAL 7032) provides protection and mechanicalresistance for the conductors along their entire length. Moreover, the metal enclosure is used as a protectiveconductor (conforming to NF C15-100) with continuityensured at each junction along the length of the installation.

As an option, Canalis KTA can be fitted with an additionalcopper protective conductor (cross-section equal to halfthe cross-section of the phase). With its compact design(no free space within the trunking), Canalis KTA can bemounted horizontally, edgewise or vertically without deratingthe rated current Ith. Moreover, this design does not requirethe mounting of a fire barrier joint to pass through floors andwalls. Canalis KTA is designed to be fire-resistant for up to2 hours. The contact faces are made of aluminium/copper laminatedstrips. They are silver-plated for plug-in tap-offs and barecopper for joints with bolted contacts.

Joints

Each run component (straight length, elbow, tee, etc) includes its own joint kit (delivered under separate cover). The jointkit comprises all the parts required to provide a mechanical and electrical joint between two components.

The electrical joint is ensured by a single bolt joint block (1 to 2 bolts per busbar). This ensures continuity for all conductorsof 2500 A upwards, and paralleling of both bars in the same phase.

The bolt is made up of a screw and a contraction nut, the external head of which breaks when the tightening torque isreached. This device ensures the required contact pressure is applied by the joint block to the live conductors. When the head of the nut breaks, a red washer is released, showing that the electrical joint has been installed correctly.

For disassembly or maintenance operations, a second head is available. The recommended torque is thus 6 Nm.The joint block contacts are silver-plated copper.

Description

Run components

There are 4 types of straight length (supplied with their busbar connector), types ET, EA, EB and DB.

ET type straight lengthsThese straight lengths are designedfor feeding current only, without anytap-off points. They are available in various lengths :- fixed lengths of 4 metres- made to measure in 0.50 to 3 metrelengths

EA type straight lengthsThese straight lengths are designedfor distributing current and can be usedfor tapping off via the KS range of tap-off units. They are supplied with an IP 54blanking plate. They are produced :i in fixed lengths for horizontal or

vertical distribution :- 4 metres with 3 tap-offs- 2 metres with 1 tap-off

i cu t t o l eng th f o r r i s i ng ma indistribution in stages : 2.50 to 4metres with 2 tap-offs

For vertical mounting, the neutral mustbe mounted on the right.

EB type straight lengthsThese straight lengths are designedfor low density or high powerdistribution. They are supplied with an IP 54blanking plate. They are produced in fixed lengths of :- 4 metres with 2 tap-offs- 2 metres with 1 tap-off

DB type straight expansion unitsExpansion is a problem :- when the run has a fixed componentat one or both ends

- when the busbar installation crossesa building expansion joint

The expansion unit solves both theseproblems. It is 3 metres long and hasa flexible joint in the middle on theconductors and a sliding casing in 2sections which can absorb the relativemovements of each section of thelength.

Description

Connection components and feed units

Connection to transformer and switchboard

To connect KTA trunking to the various terminals or connections of transformers, switchboards, generators, etc, Canalisoffers high-performance connection components to meet all requirements. These components ensure flexible, easyinstallation together with quick, easy mounting. They also absorb last minute deviations in civil engineering as they canbe adapted on site. Moreover, connections are made using bolts with snap-off heads which at the same time offer easyinstallation (use of a standard spanner for tightening) and visual check before power up.

Connection via bars

The flange feed unit, straight or angled, can be mounted ateither end of a run.

It is only available in copper. It is fitted with:- a plate for fixing to the switchboard or transformer cover- bars spread either along the trunking axis or at rightanglesThese configurations allow direct connection, either viaflexible or rigid bars, or via cables, to the low voltageterminals of a transformer or to the connections of a lowvoltage switchboard. If the run has a feed unit at both ends, an additional jointblock must be ordered.

End cover

The end cover protects and isolates the ends of theconductors and is mounted on the last component.

Selection guide

Determining the rating according to the temperature rise

The rating of a busbar trunking, in amps, represents the maximum intensity of the constant current which the trunking cancontinuously support, for an average ambient temperature of 35 °C, and in accordance with standard temperature rises(IEC 439.2).

Determining the rating according to the temperature rise consists of selecting the busbar trunking rating immediatelyabove the operating current of the installation. However, as a rule, the intensity of the current which crosses a busbartrunking is constantly fluctuating. The operating current is therefore defined as that of the constant current which producesthe same thermal effects as the actual current.

It is sometimes difficult to determine the operating current, especially when there is no reading for the installation or foran equivalent installation. The operating current can be estimated with sufficient precision by calculating the product ofthe nominal currents of receivers connected to the busbar trunking by a coefficient known as the “average demandcoefficient”. The average demand coefficient is empirically determined by comparison with existing installations. It isdependent upon :- the average quantity of receivers operating- the load variation of each receiver (a receiver rarely absorbs its maximum power, as peak periods alternate with those

of no-load operation)- whether several receivers are operating at the same time, whether peaks are superimposed and the duration of these

peaks

As an example, here are a few coefficients for a general mechanical engineering workshop.

Number of receivers Average demand coefficient

2 or 3 0.9

4 or 5 0.8

6 to 9 0.7

10 to 40 0.6

40 plus 0.5

Depending on the ambient temperature, the trunking must be derated (see characteristics pages 10273/2 and 10273/3).

Checking the rating according to the permissible voltage drop

The permissible voltage drop is that which is compatible with the correct operation of the receivers (refer to themanufacturers' manuals).

i Read the voltage drop in mV/100m/A in the tables on page 10273/3 for the busbar trunking selected according to thetemperature rise.

i Determine the voltage drop for the most disadvantaged receivers, namely those which are the furthest from the sourceand for the highest current. If the voltage drop is not permissible, select the rating immediately above.

i Repeat the checking procedure for the new rating.

Checking the rating according to withstand to short-circuit currents

i Calculate the intensity of the short-circuit current at the points which are considered to be unfavourable.

i Check, by referring to the tables on pages 10273/2 and 10273/3, that the selected rating of the trunking enables it towithstand this short-circuit current. If this is not the case, there are two possible solutions :- Select trunking of a higher rating and repeat the checking procedure.- Provide a protection system which limits current peaks upstream of the trunking.

Procedure for ordering a made to measure component

Position of the neutral

The neutral is located next to the fixing hole closest to the end of the unit (a).

Definition of a component

Shape : each shape is characterised by a group of two letters (example : ET for a feeder length).

Dimensions : dimensions are always given in alphabetical order of the measurements (example : a x b x c, etc).

How to order

The order should be made on two lines :i First line

Write the reference found in this catalogue.

i Second lineWrite the dimensions for the “made to measure” component and any of the options selected :- If the reference corresponds to a made to measure product, there are one or more variable values : you shouldwrite a x b x etc in alphabetical order.- If the reference ends in A followed by a number, an option is available (see page 10285/5).

Straight lengths

The nominal length “L” of a straight length is measured from joint axis to joint axis, in millimetres (the joint axis is located20 mm beyond the end of the bars).

Example :A KTA straight length, rating 1000 A, 3L + N + PE, 1820 mm long, has the following reference :KTA-10ET42BL = 1820

Flat elbows

The nominal length of each limb is measured from the jointaxis to the axis of the other limb, in millimetres. The jointaxis is located 20 mm beyond the end of the bars.

Example :A KTA flat elbow, rating 1000 A, 3L + N + PE, type LP, N1 :- length of limb a = 301 mm- length of limb b = 500 mm- angle = 130°

has the following reference :KTA-10LP42B12301 x 500 x 130°

Edgewise elbows

The nominal length of each limb is measured from the jointaxis to the axis of the other limb, in millimetres. The jointaxis is located 20 mm beyond the end of the bars.

Example :A KTA edgewise elbow, rating 1000 A, 3L + N + PE, type LC :- length of limb a = 301 mm- length of limb b = 500 mm

has the following reference :KTA-10LC42B301 x 500

Zed units

The nominal length of each limb is measured from the jointaxis to the axis of the other limb, in millimetres. The jointaxis is located 20 mm beyond the end of the bars. The nominal length of the intermediate limb(s) is measuredfrom limb axis to limb axis.

Example :A KTA 4 limb zed unit, rating 1000 A, 3L + N + PE, ZL, type N3 :- length of limb a = 300 mm- length of limb b = 400 mm- length of limb c = 500 mm- length of limb d = 300 mm

End feed box

N2 type end feed boxes

On the second order line, indicate the nominal length oflimb a (length measured to the joint axis, axis located20 mm beyond the end of the bars) and then the outletdistances starting from the Neutral or, failing that, from L3.

Example :A straight end feed box for KTA run, rating 1000 A, 3L + N+ PE, type N2 :- length of limb a = 450 mm- distance between N and L3 = 100 mm- distance between L3 and L2 = 120 mm- distance between L2 and L1 = 150 mm

has the following reference :KT0-13ER41A02450 x 100 x 120 x 150

N8 type end feed boxes

On the second order line, indicate the nominal length oflimb a, then that of limb b (lengths measured to the jointaxes, axes located 20 mm beyond the end of the bars) andthen the outlet distances starting from the Neutral or, failingthat, from L3.

Example :A flat elbow end feed box, flat outlets for KTA run, rating1000 A, 3L + N + PE, type N8 :- length of limb a = 500 mm- length of limb b = 400 mm- distance between N and L3 = 250 mm- distance between L3 and L2 = 180 mm- distance between L2 and L1 = 250 mm

has the following reference :KT0-13ER43D08500 x 400 x 250 x 180 x 250

Note : If the run has a feed unit at each end, an additional joint block will be required.

Options, installation precautions

Options

The degree of protection for standard references is IP 52. To obtain degree IP 54, “A1” should be added at the end of thestandard reference (degree IP 54 can only be obtained by factory assembly). Similarly, if the trunking is to be mountedoutside, “A2” should be added at the end of the standard reference. The product is supplied as IP 54 with an aluminiumcover.

IP 52 + option A1 = IP 54 IP 52 + option A2 = IP 54 + cover(edgewise only) (mounted outside

Installation precautions

Vertical mounting for rising main distribution

i Positioning of lengthsIf you use floor height lengths (from 2.50 to 4 metres),position the first joint correctly so that the tap-off outletsare accessible and the fixing device can be mounted. Toensure this, a minimum distance of 500 mm between thefloor and the first joint axis is required. This operation requires a made to measure componentL1.

i Mounting the fixing deviceThe fixing bracket is supported from the floor and boltedto the trunking (this may require some site work).

Clamping braids and vibration absorber connection bars

Example i When connecting to the transformer or switchboard, etc,via flexible bars (braids) or semi-rigid bars (vibrationabsorber bars), a clamp is required every 300 mm.

Using an expansion unit

When the run has a blocking component at one or both ends (end feed box, elbows, tees, etc), above a height of 30 metresan expansion unit should be used. There should be one expansion unit for every 30 metre section.
