Saluting Veterans & Their Families

Every family has cherished and hallowed holiday traditions that seem to be unchangeable, but life has a tendency to disrupt even the most steadfast family rites. So it becomes a challenge to adapt and evolve with changing situations.

One Halloween, when our daughter Catherine was in fourth grade, I cut out about fifty bats from black construction paper, threaded them and hung them in the front hall by the door. When the door was opened, the bats got very agitated-she loved it! She hangs her own bats over her desk at her job in Portland. Our own bats still fly in October.

Years ago we decided to forgo the turkey at Thanksgiving in favor of Lasagna! Rick happened to mention this on his radio show and we were bombarded with questions and disbelief! My own Uncle was at first aghast, but he finally saw the light and that very year he had his favorite meal, pork hocks and sauerkraut, for his non-conformist dinner. My first convert!

After Catherine moved out, we acquired several rescue cats. One or two cats can co-exist with a Christmas tree. Several cats with a tree in the house are a Three Stooges comedy short.

Rick and I took our large collection of ornaments and hung them from push pins on the ceiling. We went from one small portion to covering the entire living room ceiling, and it is a very large room! It takes several days, but we get to rekindle memories as we hang out cherished mementos.

It is always unexpected when you change one or two small details. So, it is fun and sometimes less work, to disrupt a rooted tradition and plant a new one.

America’s got a sweet tooth. This addiction is changing our health for the worst. Even children know that too many sweets are bad for you. But does it go beyond a simple stomach ache and a sugar crash? Actually, a sweet tooth can be deadly.

The first evidence of sugar being refined in a crystalline form is from 500 BC India. Before this, sweetness in the diet came from fruits, berries, and other plants. Occasionally people would use honey to sweeten a food, but honey is seasonal, so the opportunity was rare. Now with our processing capabilities, anybody can get sweets any time. In just 200 years we have gone from eating about 15 lbs. of sugar per year in 1815 to over 180 lbs. per year in 2000.

So what is the cost? Tooth decay, obesity, chronic inflammatory diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, and more. 100 grams of sugar per day is enough to depress your immune system, making it difficult for you to fight off bacterial and viral infections. The average American consumes about twice that much daily.

If you want to avoid sugar, it can be extremely difficult. There are a lot of different names for sugar out there: Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn

Syrup, Maltose, Lactose, Dextrose, Glucose, Sucrose, Fructose, Cane Juice, Turibinado Sugar, Brown Sugar, Honey,

and the list goes on. The more processed a food is, then the more detrimental the effect of the sugar. We should be getting our sweetness through whole fruits, vegetables, and berries.

Artificial sweeteners are even

worse. Many are far sweeter than sugar. Just because they are low calorie doesn’t mean they are healthy. High Fructose Corn Syrup is processed using mercury, a toxic metal. It is in everything from ketchup to breakfast cereal and it is toxic to your liver. Aspartame (NutraSweet™, Equal™, etc.) causes brain tumors and actually breaks down in your body to become formaldehyde, a common embalming fluid. Sucralose (Splenda™) is named to sound like a natural substance, but it’s very artificial and contains chlorine, a chemical used to do everything from cleaning pool to making nerve gas. Because they are so sweet they cause insulin release and drop your blood sugar.

Sweetness is addictive and triggers a cycle of increased appetite and craving for more sweets. This vicious cycle is a

Anti-coagulants are important agents in stroke prevention because they inhibit the formation of blood clots within the body. For many years, warfarin (Coumadin) has been the anti-coagulant of choice; however, there are new agents available that may challenge warfarin’s position as the gold standard.

People who have issues with their heart valves, heart rhythm, or are at risk for developing clots due to circulation problems or surgery (i.e. knee or hip replacements) are often given anti-coagulation therapy. Treatment may be brief, or depending on the situation, it may continue for one’s lifetime. Anti-coagulant medications must be carefully dosed. The clinician strives for the fine balance between blood clot prevention and obliterating the blood clotting process altogether. When the anti-coagulant dose is too high, one is at risk for severe bleeding episodes. When unchecked, bleeding occurs internally and one may not be aware of the problem until it is too late.

Warfarin has been used for decades to prevent dangerous clot formation. Blood tests, often performed monthly, are used to determine the dose of warfarin a patient needs. Warfarin is conveniently dosed once daily, however the dosing

may be complicated. For instance, one commonly sees instructions such as: “Take one tablet daily on Monday,

Wednesday, and Friday; take two tablets on Tuesday and Thursday; take no medication on Sunday.” Patients on warfarin are asked to restrict their intake of certain foods that are rich in vitamin K (generally dark green foods like kale,

spinach, broccoli, etc.) because vitamin K negates the effects of warfarin. In fact, vitamin K is used as an antidote to warfarin in cases of accidental overdose, or when a person requires emergency treatment/surgery which would be complicated by the body’s inability to control bleeding.

Researchers recognized the need for a less burdensome anticoagulation therapy. Two new anti-coagulants gained FDA approval this year: Dabigatran (Pradaxa ), and rivaroxaban (Xarelto). Both agents provide anticoagulation that is comparable to warfarin; however, they do not require the specially titrated doses. Anticoagulation is achieved by taking a set dose of the medication once or twice daily. There is no need to make repeated trips to the lab for blood-test monitoring. The drawbacks to the newer

There exists a faction of people that do their Christmas gift shopping throughout the year and subsequently enjoy a relatively stress-free holiday season. (Well, supposedly. I’ve only met one.) The rest of us battle throngs of people out shopping for deals after Thanksgiving and right up through Christmas Eve. I won’t speak for everybody, but the stress of a looming gift-purchasing deadline, coupled with the actual process of getting it done, can make for a very stressful experience. On top of that, add in the financial burden of it all and you’re probably looking forward to January already. Here are some tips to make this holiday season a more enjoyable one:• Have a budget. Put aside a little money

each month and come December you will have some money to work with. Decide who you are buying gifts for and set parameters for how much you will spend on each person before you begin. Try and avoid the temptations to buy things for yourself while you are shopping for others!

• Shop online. Even if you end up buying the gifts in a store you will have a better idea of what to buy,

where, and how much it might be. Doing your actual purchasing online will help you avoid the masses if you

don’t like to deal with crowds. Safety Tip: Make sure you are on a reputable, secure website. It is a good idea to use a credit card in lieu of a debit card for online purchases.• Set limits with those that you exchange gifts with. This

is something that my family does. Also, consider fun alternatives such as a Thieves gift exchange where everybody who participates brings one gift. Another idea (especially with family) is to agree on limiting the gift-giving to the children. Or, maybe no gift exchange at all. Maybe a family get-together and/or meal can be the real gift.

• Give the gift of food or drink. If you are able to get a discount when you buy in bulk, for example a case of wine, you can stretch your budget out and knock out a number of gifts all at once (if you are OK with giving the same thing to multiple people). A lot of people enjoy a good bottle of

United Healthcare is rolling out a new Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) for Medicare Beneficiaries and it is a $0 monthly premium plan. This plan is offered to individuals who are Medicare eligible by either turning 65 or disabled at least 24 months, individual is a United States citizen, or legal resident for at least 5 years and the individual does not have end stage renal disease (or receiving kidney dialysis).

You may ask, “How can United Healthcare offer a plan that is $0 monthly premium plan?” United Healthcare is one of the largest insurance carriers in the United States offering Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans in the United States. United Healthcare has been rated “Most Admired” insurance company by Fortune Company in March 2012 and rated #1 in claims processing by the American Medical Association. The $0 monthly premium plan is new for 2013 and offered to Benton, Lane, Linn and Polk county residents. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans combine the

coverage of Part A (hospital) and Part B (Doctors and Outpatient services). A Medicare Beneficiary must be active

in both Part A and Part B in order to be eligible for this plan by continuing to pay the Part B premium. This plan covers your Primary Care Physician visits with a small copayment of $15. And the plan provides inpatient hospital stay,

The optional riders will have a monthly premium yet United Healthcare allows you to enroll or dis-enroll in any month of the calendar year. There is no waiting period for the Dental plan so you can take advantage of the benefits in the first month you enrolled. For example you could enroll in February 2013 for a March 1st effective date and after your Dental appointment you could dis-enroll in March and only pay the $29 monthly premium for the Dental Platinum rider

It’s getting chilly out there so we thought heaters would be a good focus this month. Needless to say, heaters are an essential commodity when it gets cold. There are a variety of ways to maintain a comfortable warm atmosphere in your house.

The traditional furnace sucks in all the air in the room, heats it up, and redistributes it throughout the room. To maintain the heat in the room and prevent the fire from dying out, various fuels are used. Some of the common ones are gas, oil, electricity, wood and coal. These traditional furnaces raise the room temperature, thus making it a comfortable place to stay in winters, and also remove dust particles.

The radiant baseboard heater heats people and objects without heating the surrounding air. It is ideal for room where it is difficult to have the traditional furnaces. More expensive than the traditional heaters, they create an ideal place to be in winter. The electric heat pumps distribute the heated air from one place to another. The hydronic heating is an example of radiant ceiling heater or a radiant floor heater. In this type of heater, hot water

flows through the tubes under the floor making it warm. These heaters are usually installed in doorways to prevent accumulation of ice and snow.

Economical to operate, the patio heaters allow you to enjoy some comfortable time outdoors during winter.

Electricity or gas is used to fuel these heaters that have the

capacity to warm large spaces. Central heating is an effective way of centrally heating houses and buildings. The central heater works with the help of a boiler, furnace or heat pump to heat water, air or steam. These heaters either use piping to distribute the heated fluid or a radiator to transfer the heat in the surrounding air.

In the water heating system, the water is flown through a heat exchanger in a hot water tank or cylinder. The water is heated there with the help of the heaters and is then distributed to different outlets in the house. Another method of heating is the sealed system. The heater is one of the essential components of a sauna bath comprising of a stainless steel material, thus giving the heater more life. These are the most common types of home heating. If you’re interested in learning which system might best suit your needs call SERVCO at 541-451-5090. We wish for you a cozy winter.

How long have you owned the mattress you presently sleep on? Does it provide you with the quality of sleep you deserve? Do you ever wake up with any type of sleep soreness whatsoever? Do you toss and turn, or suffer from back pain? Have you ever heard of a Tempurpedic mattress? There are a number of reasons why people might be considering the feasibility of investing in a new sleep system. Maybe you’ve been considering it yourself for whatever reason.

If you have been, or know someone who may be, in the market for a new mattress, come to Rife’s for a great selection of Tempurpedic mattresses. These mattresses have revolutionized the sleep industry with their mattresses, pillows, and mattress toppers made of viscoelastic memory foam material! To make a long story short, in the 70’s, NASA developed a memory foam material to relieve astronauts of the pressures of high levels of “G force” in which they had to endure. Tempurpedic, a Swedish sleep system company, proposed an idea to NASA years later, and were granted permission to bring something new to the sleep world. The Tempurpedic mattress was the result. Because of them, there are millions of people now experiencing a new level of

sleep quality night after night. Many millions of dollars were spent

researching and developing this Visco elastic memory foam material, and it carries with it, a number of amazing features. For one, it’s viscoelastic properties, and for those who are not

sure what that means, it simply has the ability to return to its original shape. For example, you apply a force with

your hand to it and it will completely mould to every contour of your hand, but once you remove the force (your hand), it will return to its exact initial shape. It also carries with it, tempur sensitive qualities, which change the firmness with varying temperatures.

Below a certain temperature, the mattress will become firmer, but your body heat will soften it where it needs to soften in order to relieve all pressure points in your body. Your body will sink into the Tempurpedic mattress evenly. So, you guessed it, not only are they temperature sensitive, nut they are also pressure sensitive. Those are not the only qualities of a Tempurpedic mattress. They are also energy absorbing, body conforming, durable, hypoallergenic, and considered the most comfortable mattress in the world.

Life FaithThe Jesus NetworkNo Time for Nostalgia:

When it’s Time for Things to EndWhat are the things that must end?

Can you identify which relationships, projects, and commitments are holding you back? It takes boldness, courage, and conviction to end things while pressing toward the life that is ahead of you. Knowing when and how to “let go” helps us avoid the regrets that inevitably come our way when we hold on too long to business ideas, patterns of thinking, and wrong relationships.

In No Time for Nostalgia, Pam Lau challenges you to press toward the life ahead of you because you’ll never know that life unless you run. Speaking from her own recent experience of ending one working season and pressing toward another, Pam uses biblical insight from Philippians 3:12-21. “Our personal and professional lives can only improve to the degree we press on ahead and leave what is behind

. . . it can only get better as we develop the skills of ‘letting go’, but how do we do that?” That’s the question Pam

poses in her talk on November 8.

Pamela Havey Lau is an author and speaker living in Dundee with her husband, Dr. Brad Lau, a college administrator. They have three teenage daughters. She is the founder of Real Life Real Image, LLC where she serves as a writer, editor, and speaker. Her

clients include non-profit organizations, agricultural businesses, CEOs, and other writers. Pam is the author of Soul Strength and is finishing her second book on the spiritual growth of women in the next generation. Pam is a retreat and conference speaker for churches, schools and businesses.

And so the journey begins. Hi, I’m Dave Adams with TJN the Jesus Network. I am on a mission to visit every town in Oregon and report on the amazing things God is doing. One of our recent journeys took us to Teen Challenge in Shedd, Oregon. I have always been impressed with the success of the program. The success rate of secular drug and alcohol recovery programs varies widely, some as low as five to ten percent. Compare that with 70-percent at Teen Challenge. In in the last five years I have interviewed more than a dozen Teen Challenge students in Bend and Shedd, Oregon. Guys who have hit bottom and realize that if they don’t do something drastic, they will end up dead. One of our recent conversations was with Gary at Teen Challenge, in Shedd. He had been an alcoholic for more than 35 years, and started drinking when he was 12. He was told by doctors he was slowly killing himself. Gary hit bottom when his second wife left him and he watched his best friend die of alcoholism. He knew that if he

didn’t change, he would be laying in that hospital bed in a year or less. His blood pressure, weight, and diabetes were out of control. Gary felt God told him to change his life right away, and deep down he knew that was what he needed to do. Gary says only by God’s help has he been able to change the course of his life and stay sober. Gary’s story is available on our website, www.tjn1.tv. We are looking for more stories of God’s amazing grace. God can and will do amazing things in your life, too. If you would like to share your story, or have us visit your town, please contact us at TJN the Jesus Network.

Rye bread is one of my favorite comfort foods-it’s sturdy, tasty, and somehow very trustworthy. It’s honest.

But where do you get good rye bread? Store-bought runs from nearly acceptable to unspeakably bad.

The path to good bread is through your kitchen door. It takes a bit of work, but the results are spectacular.

In a large mixer bowl, proof 1 tbsp. yeast in 2 ¾ C warm water with 2 tbsp. sugar. Let set about 10 minutes until very foamy. Add 3 C dark rye flour and 1 C gluten flour and mix well. Add 1 tbsp. salt, ¼ C melted butter and 3 tbsp. caraway seeds. Mix again. If you don’t like the seeds, leave them out. Add 2 to 3 1/2C white flour to make a medium dough. This takes some real work, but knead in the flour just until the dough gets nice and isn’t tacky. Let rise to double. Turn out and shape into loaves.

Place the shaped loaves onto parchment lined pans. Brush with a glaze of 1 egg white beaten with 1 tbsp. water. With a

sharp knife slash each loaf three times. Mist the loaves with water and allow to rise to double, misting a few times.

Heat the oven to 400 degrees. I always bake my dough in doubled pans- using two pans keeps the bottom crust from

burning. Before baking spray the loaves heavily with water. For a good crust, spray the loaves every 5 minutes during the first 15 minutes of baking. Bake another 15-25 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 200 degrees.

Cool on racks for at least 45 minutes. It

smells so good that I usually have to leave the house to avoid temptation!

While you’re out, get some good pastrami and some sliced Jarlsberg cheese.

Slice the bread, spread 1 slice with sweet-hot mustard, and the second with a little mayonnaise. Place the cheese on the mayo slice and 2 slices pastrami on the mustard slice. Close the sandwich and toast under the broiler until very lightly browned.

This sandwich along with a cup of pea soup is surely a foretaste of Paradise!

Roasted Pumpkin Pasta SauceingReDienTs:• 2 cups roasted pumpkin (directions above)• 1-2 Tbsp olive oil• 1 small onion, diced into ½-inch dice• 1 clove garlic, minced• 2 cups chicken broth or vegetable stock• ¼ cup heavy cream• 1 Tbsp unsalted butter• Pinch of ground cinnamon (nutmeg can be used if you

prefer)• Sea salt and fresh ground black pepper• Parmesan-Reggiano cheese

DiRecTionsPlace a large skillet on the stovetop, heat the oil over

medium heat. When the oil is warm add the onion and cook until the onion lightly browned. Add the garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes more (with the onion) until the garlic is fragrant. Add the pumpkin and broth/or stock, bring to a boil. Immediately turn the heat down to simmer, cover and continue to cook for 10 minutes.

Take off heat and allow to cool for at least 20 minutes. Place in the blender and process until smooth. (Remember to use caution when processing hot liquids in the blender.)

Place the puréed pumpkin back into the skillet and bring to a boil. Immediately turn the heat down to simmer and whisk in the cream and butter. Continue to whisk until the cream and butter are incorporated. Add the cinnamon and taste; then season, with salt and pepper to your personal taste.

Prepare a good Italian pasta according to directions; serve with Parmesan-Reggiano cheese.

Pumpkins are a member of the Cururbita family, which also includes cucumbers and squash. They are classified as a fruit because they have seeds. In culinary terms, they are considered a vegetable and are used complimentary in both sweet and savory dishes.

Native Americans used pumpkin seeds for food and medicine. They also flattened strips of pumpkins, dried them, and used them to make mats. Today, one of the most common uses for pumpkins is to carve them for jack -o’-lanterns. The tradition of carving jack -o’-lanterns began with Europeans who immigrated to the United States. Originally, scary faces were carved into turnips, beets, or potatoes and were placed in homes to frighten away evil spirits. These immigrants soon discovered that pumpkins, a fruit native to America, made perfect jack -o’-lanterns because they were

much easier to carve. The bright orange color of a pumpkin is a

good indication that it is loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and offers protection against heart disease. Beta-carotene offers protection against other diseases as well as some degenerative aspects of aging. Pumpkins are also high in vitamin A, vitamin B, potassium, and they are a good source of fiber.

Field pumpkins, which are produced to be perfect jack-o’-lanterns, tend to be too large and stringy for baking. The best pumpkins for pies, soups, muffins, and breads are small with a sweet flavor and a dark orange-colored flesh. A medium-sized (5-6 pound) sugar pumpkin should yield approximately 2 cups of purée. It can be used in recipes calling for canned pumpkin. An easy method for preparing purée from fresh pumpkins is to preheat the oven to 350˚F. Cut the pumpkin in half and discard the stem section and all stringy pulp. Save the seeds to dry and roast later. In a shallow baking dish, place the two halves face down and cover with foil for about 1½ hours for a medium-sized sugar pumpkin, or until tender.

Take out of the oven and cool completely, then scoop out the flesh and mash it, or place in a food processor fitted with the metal blade and process until completely pureed. For silky smooth custards or soups, press the pumpkin puree through a sieve.

Other foods that best compliment pumpkin flavors are cream, ginger, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, molasses, nutmeg, Gruyere cheese, maple syrup, vanilla, and sour cream.

A good starting point for pruning any plant is to remove dead, diseased, or damaged stems as soon as you see them. Dead stems attract insects and invite diseases to develop.

Also remove crossing branches, water sprouts (vigorous upright growing shoots that form on trunks or side branches), and suckers (vigorous shoots that develop near or from below ground).

spring Flowering Trees and shrubsEarly-spring bloomers, such as lilac,

forsythia, and rhododendron, bear flowers on wood formed the previous year. The best time to prune them is late spring — immediately after they finish blooming. If you prune them later in the growing season or during winter, you’ll remove flower buds and decrease the amount of spring bloom.

To keep spring bloomers flowering vigorously, remove some of the oldest shoots all the way to the ground. This allows younger stems to grow and bloom.

summer Blooming Trees and shrubsPlants that bloom in summer, such as

potentilla, butterfly bush, and crape myrtle, produce their flowers on new growth from the current season. Prune them in winter while they’re dormant, or in early

spring just before they push out their new growth. You can even cut them all the way to the ground in late winter, and they’ll

still bloom that same summer.

Save time by using a pole pruner with a rotating head (available at your local Wilco store) to remove stems all the way to the base of the plant, that way, you don’t have to bend over for each cut, saving not

only time, but also wear and tear on your back!

HydrangeasMost hydrangea types — pink, blue, or

white mopheads and lacecaps, or oakleaf forms — bloom on old wood. Prune these types of hydrangeas before midsummer. If you prune them in winter or early spring, you’ll be removing flower buds.

With newer re-blooming types, such as the Endless Summer Series or the Let’s Dance Series, which bloom on new growth as well as old wood, timing of pruning is less critical. Even if you cut off some of the flower buds by pruning the old stems, the plant will bloom on the new growth. White-flowered paniculata types flower on new wood, so they can be pruned any time other than just before they bloom.

Mini Pruning Guide

By kaRen RogeRs

November is the perfect time to do your big year-end cleanup. Now is the time to get rid of all outdoor clutter. Rake up all fallen fruit and leaves because they hold spores and diseases that will manifest themselves in the spring.

It’s a good time to cut back dormant bushes and shrubs and prune excess wood from fruit trees. I like to take my fuchsias back to ground level so they won’t be all leggy and sparse looking in the spring.

Keep your slug and snail traps out and baited- these nasty blighters are still out and about.

Clean up your barbecue units, too. I like to give mine a good scrubbing

and air dry it in the sun to prevent any rusting. I also leave the vent holes open.

If you have a garden shed it’s a fine time to sort out and get rid of out dated seeds, anything rusty, and make sure there are no wasps’ nests anywhere!

Check all your tools and clean and sharpen them so they’ll be ready on the first nice day when needed. A good way to clean pruning saws is to spray them with oven cleaner. Place them on newspapers and spray the metal parts only with a good thick coating. Most sap and resin will then simply wash off. I even use it on my good Felco pruning shears. Just be sure to rinse well.

Once all this busy-work is done, sit back and have a nice cup of tea. Enjoy your rest until the garden catalogs come out in January.

Just a few of the implements you may need to clean up your garden.

Director of Points for Profit

Q: We were unable to make it to the dinner last month and i had called in our rsVP, but didn’t eat, yet you still charged us for the dinner. that doesn’t seem fair, can you help me understand?

A: Great question and thank you for asking so nicely. the reason we had to charge you is because we have to call in the rsVPs to our caterers the day prior so they can prepare enough food and when we call in that number we are obligated to pay for that amount of dinners. We hope you understand, our caterers work very hard to keep the costs low for our Points for Profit family by only charging $8 for dinner, dessert, and a beverage, so we have to do our best to give them accurate numbers. You can call our office as late as noon the day of the meeting and let us know if you can’t make it.

November is a month in which we celebrate multiple holidays. Thanksgiving is the one everyone knows, but there’s also a great little holiday that we observe to celebrate the US Armed Forces veterans who have given their service for the safety of our country. With the holidays right around the corner, you can give a little extra to a veteran that you know this month and, most importantly, thank them for their service at the same time.

ASA Hobbies stocks a great variety of military genre plastic model kits – ships, planes, armor, and figures. It’s not uncommon for someone formerly in the service to find a ship or plane that they served on, and find the idea of building it appealing. We have the supplies they’ll need, and if we don’t

already have a model they’ll love, there’s a good chance we can order one in.

A model club local to Albany meets here at the shop on Thursdays at 6:00pm. A good portion of the

members are veterans (US Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, etc.) who enjoy building models, and even talking about them. Even if someone you know has little interest in building models, maybe they’d enjoy

sharing some stories with some other veterans! The club meetings are a great way to bring people together, whether they’re building or not.

Stop by or contact the shop at (541) 926-5075 for more information on models or the model club! A Step Above Hobbies is proud to be a Points for Profit business sponsor. They are located in the Carriage house Plaze at 1193 Santiam Road S.E. in Albany.

Please do not take our word for it; go out and try one out for yourselves. After a decade of these mattresses being on the market, Tempurpedic wanted to bring an even better product to the table and now introduces the new Nimblepedic mattresses, claiming to have surpassed the Tempurpedic mattress. I haven’t had the chance to try one out yet, but when I do, you’ll be the first to hear about it.

The Tempurpedic mattress sleep system can be a little pricey, but when you consider all the time you spend in bed, and how much your life will improve due to a perfect sleep night after night, how can you deprive yourself of that? You may think you are achieving a perfect night’s sleep on your inner-spring mattress, try one of these Tempurpedic beds, and you will be almost sure to change your mind. But be careful, because many foam companies claim to make a top quality Visco elastic foam mattress. The difference comes in the density of the foam. Tempurpedic

foam has a density of approximately 5.3 lb/cu foot, as opposed to most competitors coming in at about 4 lb/cu foot. This makes a considerable difference in comfort, durability, and body conforming quality levels.

The experts at Rife’s can tell you all about how great these mattresses are, and about how there is never a need to flip them, and how they have a skid proof bottom to prevent shifting, and so much more! They can offer you to take your sleep quality to levels you never thought were possible. However, nothing will be justified until you take one for a test drive, which will be your first step to achieving optimal sleep quality. You will be amazed at the effect a quality night’s sleep will do for you, your mood, and the overall way you feel all day long.

Rife’s also offers great sales and selection. They are likely to have all you could need and if they don’t, they can order it for you! Call them today at 541-758-2020.

Albany Antique Mall always looks forward to the holiday season, and this year will be even more special as we dedicate a special Christmas tree to our heroes. Please join us in honoring our Veterans by bringing in a photo of yourself, family member, or friend who has served or is serving in the military to hang on our Veteran’s Christmas tree. This is our small way of showing our appreciation for the service and sacrifices our Veterans have made for us. Our special tree will be prominently displayed in a window for Albany’s Veteran’s Day Parade on November 10th.

The unveiling of our special Veteran’s tree will be at our annual “Holiday Open House.” Join us on the evening of Thursday, November 8th at 5:00pm for a whole lot of fun! You won’t want to miss this evening when our mall transforms into an Old Fashioned Winter Wonderland.

Bring your friends and family, and enjoy the refreshments, door prizes, and holiday cheer. Find unique, one of a kind treasures and discover the joy of giving a gift from the past.

We will be closing early at 3:00pm on Wednesday, November 7th and during the day of Nov. 8th to get ready for this special event.

Photos for our military tree should be 5x7 or smaller. If possible, please include name, branch of service and dates served. We can make a copy of your photo

to hang on the tree if you don’t want to leave the original.

As always, Albany Antique Mall would like to say thank you to our customers for their kindness and support of our mall, and to the Points for Profit organization for making it easy to give to our community non-profits. Those attending the open house on November 8th can look for High Points Editors Rick and Karen Rogers and receive an extra million points just for asking.

Albany Antique Mall salutes our veterans.

Each of us at least thinks about the possibility of leaving a legacy for following generations of our family to enjoy and appreciate. Some of us actually DO something to ensure that we leave such a legacy. Here is a way to begin doing that something.

Recent America has been beset with a mindset that others OWE me, whether that’s the government or the community or the rest of my family. That is the “entitlement” mindset. Not so with the early settlers of our great nation, most of whom came with a determination that they were here with a purpose of honoring God above all, serving others in the process and leaving behind a memory that someone who cared, not just someone who occupied space, had been here. Those people had a work ethic that served themselves, others and US well. Those are the ones who demanded, fought and died for our freedom, our independence; those are the founders of our nation and the creators of our Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States of America and the Bill of Rights. Those people were here to serve, not just to be served. The Infinite Banking Concept® (IBC), is about being the same kind of people today: taking back our freedoms through taking back control — of self and our finances, rather

than depending upon and demanding the government do it for us. We are rapidly losing ourselves in the depths of dependency upon everyone else — at a very high cost!

IBC, founded upon Austrian economics, blends together biblical truths, natural laws, sound economic philosophy and practice to assist families in saving their money, growing it safely and tax free, all while having full control of the funds and still being able to use a major portion of those funds. IBC is a way to develop wealth through wise savings, accountability, responsibility, and the exercise of discipline. This is a means of financing your life-needs and paying yourself back what most people pay to others for the use of money, BUT it is about a great deal more than money!

By depositing money into a personally designed, dividend-paying whole life insurance policy with a paid-up additions rider, from a rock-solid, mutually-owned insurance company, you create a savings vehicle providing a guaranteed growth rate of 4% annually. In addition, you immediately create a cash value which can be borrowed against the face value of the policy and used to increase your cash flow. By paying yourself back at a high

Getting your dog obedience training is probably one of the more important things you can do for your dog. Why? It’s simple. Training is the key to solving many behavior problems, or preventing them before they happen. Without proper training, dog behavior problems will lead from one to another, such as excessive barking, chewing, digging, and even biting. The good news is, no matter the age of your dog, it is never too late to begin training!

Obedience training is not just about teaching your dog to sit or to stay. It can help to ensure you dog’s safety as well as help you

gain a better understanding about your dog’s personality and behavior. This is important because the more we understand our dogs, the better relationship we can have with them.

SafeHaven Humane Society is pleased to offer a variety of obedience, specialty, and sport classes, including Puppy Socialization, Obedience I, II and III, Introduction to Agility, Treibball, K9 Nose Work, Trick & Treat, and Reactive Dog Classes.

For more information about SafeHaven’s comprehensive dog training courses, visit safehavenhumane.org and select the Pet Training tab or call 541.928.2789.

There is a new way of helping our arthritic pets cope with the debilitating effect of pain and inflammation and it uses the therapeutic effects of laser therapy. It may sound like voodoo but there is sound science behind it. Large animal veterinarians have been using this form of treatment for years on performance horses with athletic injuries and interestingly it is now being used in human athletes. For small animal veterinarians its use gained wider acceptance in February 2007 when its use was approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Initially “cold” lasers were used. These are called class three lasers and received mixed results due to there limited power. Class four lasers are fifty times stronger than class three lasers and are therefore capable of reaching deeper tissues and providing a greater therapeutic effect in a shorter amount of time.

Therapeutic lasers are different from the lasers we typically think of. Unlike the lasers the evil villain uses to cut people in half the therapeutic laser employs a broader beam that warms and transmits energy in the form of photons through tissues without damaging them when used properly. The therapeutic effects work at many levels. The energy stimulates tissue repair at the cellular level by stimulating the mitochondria (cell powerhouse) to increase energy production. The increase in cellular metabolism facilitates healing and the

elimination of waste products that can perpetuate inflammation. Laser therapy promotes blood vessel growth to the sites of injury and inflammation, a process

known as angiogenesis, this also promotes healing. Restorative cells known as fibroblasts reach the injury site quicker and in higher numbers so they can lay

the framework for healing. Pain relief comes not just from the reduction of inflammation but also as a result of the lasers effects on nerve transmission. Nerve cells transmitting pain from the site of damage can become trigger happy and send pain impulses with very little activation. Laser therapy helps calm these nerves down. Laser therapy helps to reduce the release of blood proteins known as bradykinins that stimulate the activity of pain transmission and also stimulates the release of pain killing hormones known as endorphins.

Therapeutic lasers are being used increasingly by feline specialists to treat older cats with arthritis since our options for treating this condition with oral anti-inflammatories is extremely limited and potentially very dangerous. So far the responses have been very encouraging. The use of laser therapy as an adjunctive therapy for dogs with arthritis is also very encouraging. Many clients report that they have to use anti-inflammatories less often. Lasers have been used successfully for conditions other than arthritis. Traumatic wounds, sprained joints and back injuries have all been shown to heal quicker and with less pain with laser therapy.

Do you believe in love at first sight? What if you’re more built for obsession than love? These are the premises of Cannell’s thriller, which begins with an apology for the book from the author. Although he had his spoons in many stews, Cannell as an author was best known for his more traditional mysteries (including a short series about an LA detective), and he apologizes in advance if you don’t like this more experimental novel.

Chick Best, the narrator of the bulk of the story, was a successful dot-com millionaire whose company and marriage are both near collapse. On vacation with his dysfunctional family, he sees and instantly falls in “love” with Paige Ellis.

Unfortunately, Chick is so self-obsessed that he has no room in his heart for true love. The great part about the novel, though, is that once in a while Chick is able to step back from himself and see his flaws — which he then dissects, mocks, or apologizes for. This is a great character study, helped along by a generous portion of self-analysis (which usually devolves into

rationalization for bad decisions). The plot sort of ambles along until Chick

accidentally kills Paige’s husband.

At this point, the book changes character; the plot suddenly becomes suspenseful, as Chick not only tries to cover his tracks on the murder, but also attempts to claim Paige as his

own. At any cost. No plot spoilers here, but the bad news is that the narration starts to switch back and forth between Paige and Chick. Paige is an uninspired character to begin with (although this is part of the point — that Chick’s obsession is more about him than her), but her point of view could — and sometimes is — a great counterpoint to Chick’s. Unfortunately, our hero/villain gradually becomes more simplistic, and therefore less interesting.

A good book, nonetheless. Not quite as formulaic as some of the TV shows Cannell created (such as The A-Team, or The Rockford Files), but definitely worth his experiment.

Nearly every other movie being shot these days is being released in some 3-Dimensional format. IMAX theaters even show 3-D movies on huge screens several stories high. By wearing special glasses, a right and left flat image on the screen is separated to be perceived slightly different by your right and left eyes. Your brain then outs these two images together giving you a sense of depth. Assuming you have the use of both eyes, you see the everyday world in 3-D. If you ever owned a View Master when you were young, when you put it up to your eyes you viewed separate right and left images on those View Master discs, creating the illusion of 3-D. Even Mathew Brady used right and left cameras to shoot 3-D still photographs during the Civil War. Popular in nearly every household at the turn of the last century were stereoscopes, which allowed you to view 3-D scene cards depicting sights from around the world.

Prior to 1953, 3-D in movies was limited to a handful of independently produced short subjects, many featuring rather naughty or risqué subject matter, utilizing the old red and blue 3-D glasses. But in 1953, the writing was on the wall for the major movie studios and the nation’s theater owners, and because

TV was quickly coming to every home in America, a new gimmick had to be found. It was discovered that using a

cheaply produced set of cardboard glasses with polarized lenses, left and right images could be projected through polarized filters and 3-D was suddenly on nearly every neighborhood movie screen in America.

By April of that year, the move to 3-D was underway from nearly every major studio, including Columbia Pictures gangster epic “Man in the Dark” with a thrilling 3-D roller coaster ride. Warner Brothers was next up with “House of Wax,” a super scary Vincent Price chiller in which a man plays with a paddle ball coming off the screen and seemingly inches from your nose. M-G-M’s “Arena” was billed as the first 3-D western and Universal released “It Came from Outer Space” and “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” both still revered by fright-film addicts to this day.

But the craze didn’t last long. Twentieth Century Fox never got on the 3-D bandwagon because they had their own new, ultra-wide-screen process known as CinemaScope, with full Stereophonic Sound in theaters by December of 1953.

Recently, I was watching one of the programs on evening TV. It really caught my attention when one of the commentators made the statement that she did not understand why glasses are so expensive. After all, all they are is some wire and two pieces of glass. As a person who works in the optical industry, I was surprised that an educated person would make such an uneducated statement on national television. The availability of so many different lenses today to correct one’s vision for the myriad of vision needs is quite impressive. The consumer is not only paying for the actual material of which the products are made, but also the extensive research to develop these products. Also there is significant cost in developing and producing the equipment used to manufacture the lenses as well as the frames.

I can appreciated that in our busy lives, many would like to go to the doctor and walk out with new glasses, thirty minutes later, that will make their vision perfect for all the many different things they do all day long. Take the person who works hours on the computer, then drives several hours for fun or work, then spends several hours playing golf in the afternoon and ends their day paying a card game with some friends. In “yesteryear,” most purchased one pair of glasses and had varied activities similar to the above

example. How did they do it? The simple answer is that they made do and had to compromise. They were resigned to the fact that they could not see everything clearly in all circumstances. When there is advanced technology and more products that will make our life better, most of us want them.

A simple analogy is the toaster most of us have in our kitchen. You may say you just want one to make regular bread, one or two slices, into toast in a hurry in the morning. The next person wants to also to be able to make “Texas Toast” with the thicker slices of bread. The next person wants heated bagels, or heated frozen waffles, or to make a poached egg and toast at the same time in the same appliance, etc.

We, the staff of Custom Eyes, understand that the many choices of lens style and materials can be overwhelming to most people. We invite you to do some research, but do not expect you to understand how all the lens types differ or make the best choice for your needs. You should be able to get some idea of the differences and, by all means, come in and talk with us or give us a call with any questions. One of the largest lens manufactures has a new web site for the consumer. The site is: www.hoyasvision.com. Please spend some time at this site (and any other that interests you) before your next vision exam.

What are You Paying For?Cellulite refers to the dimpled or

orange peel appearance on the thighs, buttocks, hips, and other areas. Cellulite is more sensitive than normal skin and can feel cold to the touch. It may appear whiter than the rest of the skin.

Hard cellulite, which is found in active women, such as dancers or athletes, is the hardest to reduce because it attaches to the muscle. Soft cellulite on the other hand is more noticeable but easier to reduce.

Cellulite develops when the skin sends down anchoring connective tissue to the muscle. In between this connective tissue and muscle are fat deposits. When the fat deposits become hard and large they push against the connective tissue and stretch it, which therefore creates the outward appearance of lumps and bumps. This can be caused by a number of things poor circulation, lack of exercise, poor lymphatic system drainage, food allergies, eating foods high in preservatives, yo-yo dieting, too much sun, lack of water, genetics, pregnancy, aging, smoking, tension and stress, and medication.

Primarily women develop cellulite because there connective tissue is composed of x-shaped bands. These bands bind the skin to deeper tissues such as fascia or muscle. The part that is attached to the skin traps the fat, and the fat ends up pushing on the skin creating the lump and bump effect. Most cellulite develops in girls around the age of 14 and increases through the years due to the thinning and redistribution of the subcutaneous skin.

Men rarely develop cellulite because their connective tissue is perpendicular, which heads the collection of fat build up.

Around 80% of western women believe they have cellulite. Even if a person has only 15% body fat, that person can have cellulite. Toxins and fat that have built up in the body are a large part of cellulite, and can affect women of any weight, size, or body structure. Sadly, liposuction does not permanently get rid of cellulite.

Any cellulite program should include stimulation of the body’s elimination functions, increasing the body’s circulation and metabolism process, support in the reduction of excess fluid retention, and re-establish the elasticity of connective tissue.

Cellulite is a permanent change in the body. Although there is no cure for cellulite, there is a way to effectively fight it and ultimately reduce it.

We have added new machines, equipment, and techniques of body sculpting to our clinic. In stimulating the body’s elimination functions, controlling excess fluid retention, controlling excess fluid retention by opening up the lymphatic system, and increasing circulation and metabolism. By getting the blood flowing hard lumps and bumps can be broken down and allows the body to re-establish the elasticity of connective tissue. The procedure is far superior to options available in the past and results amazing, and are non invasive, unlike liposuction.

With fall upon us and winter just around the corner, rodents that once lived outdoors are looking for new shelter, and that shelter may be your home.

Rodents share the same three principals that we do: food, shelter, and water, and the homes we live in typically meet all three needs.

Once rodents detect that conditions outside will become severe from one extreme to another, they start looking for new homes. They run on top, around, and sometimes under our homes in search of entry points to seek refuge. Most rodents can contort themselves into extremely small openings. An opening even ¼ inch wide is wide enough to let a mouse in.

Once rodents have gained access into your home and conditions are favorable, they will do what comes natural, and that is typically to start a family. Other rodents typically follow suit and before you know it, your home can have a huge population of these

uninvited guests. These rodent infestations can cause

diseases as well as destroy property. Here are a few tips to help you as a homeowner to keep rodents out of your home. Keep trees and bushes cut back from your home so rodents can’t run up and onto your rooftop. Walk around your

home and inspect the vents at the base of your structure and overhead at attic vents making sure they are in good repair. Check weather stripping on all entry doors including garage doors and make sure rodents have not chewed the corners away. Inspect your exterior dryer vent to make sure the flap on it is not missing or clogged with lint. Also inspect your crawl space access panels if you have one and ensure it is fitted properly and not

deteriorated. Feed your pets indoors whenever possible. Regularly feeding pets outdoors will eventually attract rodents.

If you would like more information or help solving a rodent problem call Healthy Home Pest Control, LLC 541-570-0095, we can help.

shrubs without showy BloomsCut back shrubs grown primarily for

their foliage, such as barberry and burning bush, almost anytime except in late autumn. New growth that starts after late-season pruning won’t harden off properly before winter. If you want to do major pruning, it’s best to cut the shrub back when it is dormant in winter.

clipped HedgesShrubs such as boxwood and privet are

often sheared to form a hedge. To maintain a solid wall of green, shear the new growth frequently during the early part of the growing season. Keep the top narrower than the base so that the upper branches don’t shade the lower ones. Stop shearing the hedge approximately six weeks before your area’s average first frost.

If you’re growing a privacy hedge, reduce the amount of pruning maintenance needed by selecting shrubs that grow only as tall and wide as necessary to provide screening. Allow them to grow into their natural form, and little, if any, pruning will

be required.

RosesTreat climbers and old garden roses that

bloom only once per year the same as other spring-blooming shrubs: Pruning after they finish blooming.

Repeat bloomers, including hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, miniatures, and modern shrub roses are pruned mostly to shape the plant or to remove winter-damaged canes. If they become overgrown, cut them back in early spring.

Canceled debt is normally taxable to you, but there are exceptions. One of those exceptions is available to homeowners whose mortgage debt is partly or entirely forgiven during tax years 2007 through 2012.

The IRS would like you to know these 10 facts about Mortgage Debt Forgiveness:1. Normally, debt forgiveness results

in taxable income. However, under the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007, you may be able to exclude up to $2 million of debt forgiven on your principal residence.

2. The limit is $1 million for a married person filing a separate return.

3. You may exclude debt reduced through mortgage restructuring, as well as mortgage debt forgiven in a foreclosure.

4. To qualify, the debt must have been used to buy, build, or substantially improve your principal residence and be secured by that residence.

5. Refinanced debt proceeds used for the purpose of substantially improving your principal residence also qualify for the exclusion.

6. Proceeds of refinanced debt used for other purposes – for example, to pay

off credit card debt – do not qualify for the exclusion.

7. If you qualify, claim the special exclusion by filling out Form 982, Reduction of Tax Attributes Due to Discharge of Indebtedness, and attach it to your federal income tax return for the tax year in which the qualified debt was forgiven.

8. Debt forgiven on second homes, rental property, business property, credit cards, or car loans does not qualify for the tax relief provision. In some cases, however, other tax relief provisions – such as insolvency – may be applicable. IRS Form 982 provides more details about these provisions.

9. If your debt is reduced or eliminated you normally will receive a year-end statement, Form 1099-C, Cancellation of Debt, from your lender. By law, this form must show the amount of debt forgiven and the fair market value of any property foreclosed.

10. Examine the Form 1099-C carefully. Notify the lender immediately if any of the information shown is incorrect. You should pay particular attention to the amount of debt forgiven in Box

If you are like me, you have days where you get to the end of the day and wonder, “What did I get done today?” Whether this is happening in our business or personal life, there is a concept that, if understood, can help effectively manage our time: Planning is the key to effective time management.

This analogy demonstrates this concept.

Start with a bucket, some big rocks (enough to fill it), some small stones, some sand, and water.

Put the big rocks in the bucket. Is it full?

Put the small stones in around the big rocks. Is it full?

Put the sand in and give it a shake. Is it full?

Put the water in. Now it’s full. The point is: Unless you put the big

rocks in first, you won’t get them in at all.

Planning time-slots for our big tasks before anything else keeps the inevitable sand and water tasks from filling up our days and not allowing us time to fit the big items in (a big task doesn’t necessarily have to be a work task — it

could be your child’s sports-day, or a holiday).

I was challenged by my business coach to take the time to lay out a one year calendar. First thing on it: Time off from the business for vacation, holidays & important family/kids events. Then came the big rocks necessary to running the business, followed by the small stones, necessary tasks to the big picture, but tasks requiring an exact time slot with a definite beginning and end time and last came the sand, busy work like email that can take up a whole day if allowed to.

This scheduling did two things for me. Time designated for work, which is less time due to the scheduled time off, becomes more efficiently spent and forces 100% focus on what is scheduled to be done each day. It also keeps me from getting to the end of the day with an undone “to do” list. I challenge you to take the time to really look at what takes up your day then at least lay out a quarterly calendar if you don’t think you have time for a year at a time!

Myth: I can’t see any problems with my teeth, so I don’t need to go to the dentist.

Fact: There are dental problems that aren’t visible to the naked eye – gum disease, hairline fractures, and root canal disease are just a few. Dentists use sophisticated technologies, like digital X-rays, to detect problems both on and beneath the surface of your teeth. Plus, it’s a mistake to think of dental visits as emergency care; they’re just as much about preventive care.

Myth: I don’t need to worry about

my teeth because my parents never had problems.

Fact: Though genetics may play a small role in predicting your oral health, how well you take care of your teeth will be the single most important determinant in how healthy they are.

Myth: Chewing sugar-free gum after a

meal is just as effective as brushing.Fact: It’s true that chewing sugar-free

gum after meals can help clean your teeth, stimulate saliva flow, and freshen your breath after meals. But it’s no replacement for a thorough brushing and flossing, which actually removes dental plaque and food debris.

Myth: I shouldn’t brush my teeth if my gums are bleeding.

Fact: Bleeding gums can be a sign that you’re either brushing too vigorously, or have gum disease. Keep brushing, but make some adjustments. Use a toothbrush with

medium-soft bristles and brush in a circular motion. If the bleeding continues after a few days, see your

dentist.

Myth: If I have a toothache, placing an aspirin tablet next to the tooth will relieve pain.

Fact: Putting an aspirin tablet in direct contact with the soft tissues of your mouth will not help relieve a toothache. In fact, this can lead to painful chemical burns. Don’t do it! See your dentist for relief.

Myth: All dental procedures must be

avoided during pregnancy.Fact: Although certain procedures,

such as X-rays or dental surgery, should be avoided during pregnancy, regular dental treatments should continue as usual.

interest rate you force your policy’s face value to grow, increasing the dividends paid and increasing the cash value of the policy. With planning, responsible use and personal accountability, over time, you find that you have capitalized enough money to finance all of your life expenses, reaping the benefits of savings, capturing compounding interest, and growing your money tax-free, with the gravy of a death benefit for beneficiaries at the point of death of the insured. All of this when taught to your family and others becomes a way of life, a way to build wealth and THE way to leave a legacy of education in finances and economics few understand today.

Infinite Banking is NOT a get-rich-quick scheme; it is a growing process. As you grow in understanding economics,

your money grows because you learn how to save it, use it and grow it well. You take back control of your money and have to pay no one to manage your funds or its growth. You reap the benefits of purchasing and paying interest because YOU are your own BANKER! Become Your Own Banker®. Call me at Legacy for Life: Sam Coy, 503-623-8408 or email me at [email protected]. I can and will provide you with free coaching services in Infinite Banking and give you some web links for free books explaining some of the concepts of Infinite Banking. I can also design and help you with insurance policies for banking, in the event that is needed, and receive my commission from the insurance company, not from my clients.

It was the blockbuster biblical epic “The Robe.” By the way, the Venetian Theater in downtown Albany was one of the first in the state to be equipped with the giant wide CinemaScope screen and full magnetic track stereo theater sound system.

CinemaScope was billed as “The Miracle You See without Glasses” and

3-D disappeared nearly as fast as it had come. Within 1954, 3-D was gone, and many films that had been made in 3-D such as Alfred Hitchcock’s “Dial M for Murder” and M-G-M’s musical “Kismet” were released in standard flat-screen 2-D

I guess the point of this is, “What goes around comes around”. Welcome back 3-D.
