Happy Holidays!

The leaves have fallen, winter sports are underway, and students have already finished the first marking period. Now, it is time to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year!

The Mothers' Club will help brighten the spirits of our community members at the annual Holiday Tea on Wednesday, December 1st at the Performing Arts Center. This festive event, chaired by Carmen Dusina, features our talented South and North choirs and orchestras.

Alumni are invited to reconnect through an afternoon gathering at South on Friday, December 17 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Student Commons. Alumni Chairs, Betsy Fox and Mary Farley, are planning a special time for recent graduates to return to South.

When making those holiday plans, you may be using the 2010-2011 Student Directories. Chairs Allison Kuhnlein, Peggy Shine and Susan Ames created a work of art for this wonderful parent resource. A huge thank you to them and all the volunteers who helped label and deliver the books to our members' homes. Directory sponsors were a new addition this year. Please support these local businesses, along with our Great Night to be a Devil Sponsors!

College Day was held at South this year and provided a wealth of information to parents and students about prospective schools. Chairs Patti Willard, Barb Keller and Susie L'Heureux did an excellent job of organizing this invaluable event and assisting Teresa Bennett in South's Career Resource Center.

Many thanks to Sally Wittwer, chair of the Parent/Principal Coffee, for providing an informal opportunity for parents to get to know our administrators better. Another coffee will be held in March, 2011, so please watch for more details.

Finally, a special thank you to all our Executive Board members who continue to provide an outstanding nucleus of support and wisdom. An extra thanks goes to Treasurer Megan Hughes, who has spent hours meticulously tracking our expenses and income; Corresponding Secretary Patti Bickerstaff, who worked tirelessly to track down dates and information in creating the invaluable school calendar; and Vice-President of Enrichment, Helen Srebernak, who along with Principal Al Diver, effortlessly guided the important process of reviewing and approving enrichment requests for the teachers at South. Please look for a list of approved items in our next High Pointes.

Our next General Membership meeting will be on January 11, 2011 at 9 a.m. Have a wonderful holiday season with friends and family, and I look forward to working with you in the New Year!

Counselors

Corner

COUNSELORS’ CORNER

Important remInder for SenIor parentSParents need to know that they can only apply for the FAFSA online. You cannot electronically send your FAFSA information until January 1, 2011. We have FAFSA worksheets in the Counseling Center to help you through the application process. You can have your child pick up the FAFSA worksheet in the Counseling Center at any time. In order to apply for financial aid using the electronic method you must go online to www.fafsa.gov. It would be helpful if you would apply for your PIN number now at the website. Once you get your PIN number, you will be able to fill out the application without delay after January 1. When you use the electronic method, you will need your 2010 tax information (or a close estimate of the likely figures) in order to complete the FAFSA. The ideal window of opportunity for filling the FAFSA is from January 1 to February 15th. Colleges will start awarding money as soon as they receive your information from the federal processing center, so don’t delay.

We wish each of you a wonderful holiday season filled with plenty of time to make special family memories!

Christmas Break begins after the last class on December 17th.

Important remInder for junIor parentSThe Junior Parent Night is scheduled for Thursday, December 2nd at 7:00 in the Auditorium. We will be sharing important information about the college selection and application process as well as testing information. Please mark that important night on your calendars.

It is up to your child to register for the ACT and/or SAT tests that will be given in the second semester. Please register for the ACT with Writing and/or the SAT I with Writing later in the winter or in the spring. However, please keep in mind that your child will take a free ACT with Writing at South in March as a part of the MME. You can go directly to the testing companies’ websites (www.act.org and www.collegeboard.com) to register and to obtain more information about the tests. Paper copies of the test registrations are also available in the Counseling Center.

Please check either the Mothers’ Club calendar or the test websites for the test dates and deadlines for registering. We recommend that you register early to secure a spot at your preferred testing center. Please pay attention to deadlines; there are substantial financial penalties for late registration. When you register, you will need to use the Grosse Pointe South school code: 231-802. Failure to use this code will cause difficulty when it comes time to plan for college and to process college applications, so please remind your student to enter the code accurately on the registration materials. Please rest assured that you will receive more detailed information about college entrance testing at the Junior Parent Night.

Important remInderS for all parentSStudents in grades 9, 10, and 11 will be meeting with their counselors the first two weeks in February to begin the registration process for the school year 2011-12. Students will be registering online just as they did last year, but we ask your help in reminding them that they MUST ALSO turn in the registration sheet that bears their teachers’ and your signatures for approval of the courses that they select. Keep in mind these approved course selections are important because there will be no class changes in the fall.

Please write “Russ’ Climb” on your check or visit our website at www.gpfpe.org and donate online!

We honor Dr. Russ Chavey who, like the GPPSS, has always set goals and challenged himself. “GPPSS has always encouraged individual aspirations for its students and staff, but we dream ‘bigger’ and aim higher -- and that is what the GPFPE is all about.”, says Russ’ wife, Dr. Christy Winder.

Classroom Technology Challenge Russ’ goal is to raise $1 for every foot climbed or $19,341 to support this campaign. This will accelerate the district’s purchase of SMART Boards, projectors, sound systems, tablets, teacher training and more! Our children’s learning experience is moving to the next level!
