What are the requirements?
• Indoor or outdoor protection?
• Time of protection
• Easy to remove
• Film thickness
• No Labelling
• Barium free
• Light colour
• Dewatering effect
• Handling at room temperature
• Oil or water soluble
Rust protection is challenging
Applications for rust preventatives
• protection against corrosion to metal parts after machining or forming
• Metal protection during storage (outside and inside storage)
• Oversea shipments (shipment of engine blocks)
• Longterm protection, e.g. Harbour bridge in Sydney, underbody protection (cars)
• World Corrosion Organization: 3% of the BIP of industrialized countries are being
destroyed by rust

Test methods for rust preventatives
Salt Spray Test
DIN EN ISO 9227 (NSF)
Humidity Test
DIN 50017 (KTW method)
• Metal sheets are dipped into the rust
preventative (16h for solvent based fluids / 2h
for oil based fluids)
• Metal sheets are placed into the salt spray
chamber
• Regular control for rust points
• Metal sheets are dipped into the rust
preventative (16h for solvent based fluids/ 2h
for oil based fluids)
• Metal sheets are placed into the salt spray
chamber for 16h
• Sheets will be kept in the chamber for 8h
(Chamber is turned off during that time). 1
cycle is finished. Repeat the cycles until rust
points can be seen

Packages can be adjusted individually
• Each package can be adjusted blended with Oil or solvent. Normal
treat rate of the package is 5-20%.
• DW 553 (single dewatering additive) can be added to improve the
dewatering effect
• High molecular sulfonates can be added to improve the corrosion
protection properties (example CX 914 B)
