General

Metso High Gradient Magnetic Separators (HGMS) and High Gradient Magnetic Filters (HGMF) are designed to recover weakly magnetic material from non-magnetic matter and can be used for many applications including the processing of iron ores, rare earths and industrial minerals. In addition to the strongly magnetic minerals of Fe, Co, and Ni, a vast number of weakly magnetic minerals, which are not normally treatable by ordinary magnetic separators, may be processed by High Gradient Magnetic Separators.

Metso HGMS separators are able to remove even weakly para-magnetic materials. A number of extremely eff ective applica-tions include:

• Increasing the brightness of kaolin clay

• Reduction of copper in molybdenum concentrates

• Separation of galena from chalcopyrite and Fe-sphalerite

• Reduction of Fe in glass sands, barites and ceramic clays

• Purifi cation of coal, refractory materials and phosphates

Principle of Separation

The HGMS separators and fi lters are designed around a unique magnetic system with high capacity matrix material which together produces the required high magnetic fi eld gradient to enable the capture of normally weakly magnetic or para-magnetic minerals.

High Capacity

The specifi c capacity of the Metso HGMS depends very much on the material to be processed and testing is always required. Due to the unique magnetic system and design of the Metso HGMS very large unit capacities can be provided.

The HGMS separators are available in several sizes and mag-netic ratings to suit each individual application.

Matrix material diff er from coarse grade expanded metal to fi ne steel wool for special quality.

Outstanding Separation Selectivity

The HGMS magnetic system design, matrix selection and slurry fl ow control produce an excellent selectivity between magnetics and non-magnetic material. The magnetic separation process applica-tion fi eld is hence widened to many areas normally processed by other, often more expensive, techniques.

Ease of Operation

The Metso HGMS is designed to allow certain variations in feed conditions without need of manual adjustments. Parameter adjustments, when required, are easily made. The built- in PLC system reduces the cost of supervision and operation to a minimum.

Low Maintenance Costs

The Metso HGMS is furnished with wear protection lining wherever possible. The wear of other non-lined components like the matrix material, is extremely low due to the controlled pulp fl ow pattern. Bearings are designed for extremely long life and are automatically lubricated.

Normal maintenance is concentrated to the change of seals.

The availability of the HGMS separators has proven to be excellent.

Product Presentation

The continuously working carousel type of HGMS is the normal choice when the grade of magnetics is signifi cant (normally higher than about 5 per cent). The continuously working HGMS operates in open atmospheric pressure at ambient temperature.

• Cooling system for the electrical supply and magnet coils

• Vacuum system for magnetic product removal

• Low Intensity Magnetic Separator, LIMS, (optional)

• Automatic lubrication system

The HGMF, High Gradient Magnetic Filter, is a variant of the cyclic model for magnetic treatment of water containing a minor amount of magnetic matter. It is available is many sizes with standard magnetic ratings of 0,3 T and special versions available up to 2 T.

The continuous HGMS is available in several diff erent sizes, magnetic ratings and choice of magnetic head units.

In addition to the magnetic separator the continuous HGMS system includes auxiliary equipment like

Models and Sizes

The original HGMS operates in a cyclic process mode and is intended for removal of minor amounts of magnetic material from a larger quantity of feed material. The cyclic model is available in many sizes in various designs depending of feed particle size, fl ow rate etc. HGMS (cyclic) is the natural choice in many applications particularly when the amount of magnet-ics is low or the process is required to be isolated from the atmosphere due to e.g. temperature, pressure and chemical reactions or similar.
