Dear parents and caregivers,

Annual Community Survey and Values

I have recently sent out an invitation to participate in the board’s satisfaction

survey. I encourage you to engage as your feedback is important to shaping our

direction for the future. We are currently reviewing our core values and your

thoughts on the relevance of our current values would be appreciated.

Sports success

Congratulations to our 6B Rugby team that won the Auckland Championship. It

was a proud moment for everyone involved.

Congratulations also to all of our winter sports tournament teams for a successful

campaign. I would like to thank all coaches and managers particularly for giving

up their time to provide sporting opportunities to occur. These rich experiences

will be lasting fond memories.

Student Leadership

We have received a huge number of applications for our student leadership roles

for next year. I have been incredibly impressed with our current leaders who all

presented their plans for school improvement to the board of trustees. Each lead-

er has done a tremendous job in adding value to the culture of the school.

I paticuarly wish to acknowledge our Head Boy, Nathan Limm and Head Girl, Inka

Pleiss for their significant contribution to the student leadership team.

Congratulations to new student trustee, Ethan McCormick who will provide a

strong student voice on our BOT.

Property Update

Our ‘L’ Block roofing project has been challenging from the outset and as a con-

sequence it has impacted on the normal operations of the school. Our students

and staff have been inconvenienced on a number of levels and I acknowledge the

frustrations that this has caused. All work will be completed by the end of term

and by the time we return for T4, we will no longer have the issues experienced to

date.

Our classroom refurbishment programme is continuing. We have completed ‘H’

and ‘T’ Blocks with ‘C’ block near completion. Over the Christmas holidays work

on ‘L’ Block internal classroom refurbishment will begin.

School roll

Our school roll continues to rise every year and our board has decided to further

reduce entry into Y9 for 2019. There will be a cap of no more than 400 learners.

This means that there will be a further limit of places for out-of-zone students in

2019.

Enjoy the holiday break!

Congratulations to Ethan McCormick who has

been elected as the Student Representative for the

Board of Trustees for 2019

Word-Up! 2018

Congratulations to Reiven Zamora who was selected to compete in the

Word Up! competition held every year at the Corban Estate Arts Centre.

Reiven was one of the youngest entrants in a competition which offers

rappers, poets and songwriters aged between 13—21 years the oppor-

tunity to showcase their original work. Reiven was thrilled by the crowd’s

enthusiastic response to her performance and the incredible feedback

she received from judges and other performers.

NCEA “Make Your Mark” Competition

The Make Your Mark competition, challenged young

New Zealander’s to share their vision of what

education might look like in the future. Ayusha

Salagaonkar was encouraged by her English

teacher Mr Vogel, to enter both a visual and written

text and she was delighted to receive recognition for

both! Her storyboard (opposite) received the award

for “Most Creative” while her creative writing won

SECOND place in her category. Ayusha flew to

Wellington this week to attend the official Awards

Ceremony at Parliament. Well done Ayusha!

Hip Hop Championships

Maddie Gilbert and Mitchell Cleaver and their respective Hip Hop dance crews

progressed to the finals of the International Hip Hop Championships. Maddie’s crew

won THIRD place in the Varsity finals and Mitchells crew placed 4th in the adults

division. They are both also in a mixed crew who placed 6th over all in the Megacrew

Division.

Congratulations to them both for their achievements in representing New Zealand,

and their continued commitment and passion for dance.

NIWA Science Fair

Once again our students entered their science projects into the annual NIWA

Science Fair held at Mission Heights Junior College. The Science Fair offers

students an opportunity not only to hone their investigative skills but to also

communicate their findings effectively. As in previous years, competition was

high with a range of innovative and exciting projects on display.

Congratulations to Kenjiah Weir who was Highly Commended in the

Environmental Science category for her “Fish Poo Hydroponics” experiment.

The water from a fish tank was filtered by hydroponic plants before being returned

to the tank, allowing the plants to benefit from the nutrients that would otherwise

wasted by the fish.

Gen X Unleashed

In the last term break, a group of 26 students from Years 9-13 took part in the Gen X Unleashed, a ‘Fusion Arts’

competition. Fusion Arts combines dance, spoken work, music and multi-media arts to create a performance piece

which delivers a message based on the theme. For this year, the theme for the competition was Purpose. The team

were led by Olivia Homan, Shanna Steffany, Maddie Gilbert and Brandon Luangrath and many long hours of hard

work went in to create their six minute concept piece.

The competition held in Auckland featured schools from across the city. Howick College brought home two awards

for Best Choreography and Best Spoken Word.

Congratulations team!

The group’s performance video can be viewed on the school’s Facebook page:

Expressive Arts Tour 2020

We are excited to announce the confirmation of the 2020 Expressive Arts Tour. Mrs Dryden, HOLA Expressive Arts/

HOD Drama, and Mr Harman, HOD Visual Arts, will accompany a group of 23 Drama, Music, Dance and Arts

students on an inspiring and event filled tour of Europe. The group will visit many famous art museums and cities

known for their history of art and culture, including Strattford-Upon-Avon, Amsterdam, Florence, Venice and Rome.

The students will also have the opportunity to tour the Globe Theatre, take in a play in London ’s West End and take

part in several performing arts workshops.

A wonderful learning experience, this ‘once in a life-time’ trip is a huge undertaking and the students now begin the

hard work of fundraising to make the trip a reality. Any help or sponsorship from our community would be gratefully

accepted, if you think you may be able to help or know of a contact who can, please contact Mrs Dryden:

House News…

MINERVA House spread cheer throughout the

school with spring daffodils which raised funds for

the Cancer Society. For some lucky recipents, their

daffodils came with a song. Along with their annual

Daffodil Day event, Minerva has been working on

other ways to offer support to charities, namely the

local Bellyful group. Students from Minerva have

volunteered their time to help with cooking meals

for families being supported by Bellyful. The staff

are also enjoying the ongoing weekly ‘coffee run’ fundraiser with barista coffees made by the

Minerva team.

MACDONALD House raised well over $1000 from the various stalls that made up

their MacMarket Day. The H block courtyard was filled with students and staff keen on a

bargain or for a small contribution, MacMarket goers could lob water-filled balloons at their

student leaders. The henna tattoos once again

proved a popular stall, as was the Mario Kart-

Racing.

MacDonald would like to thank everyone for their

generous donations, and for coming along to

support MacMarket Day - we hope you enjoyed it!

Inter-House Competition

This year the inter-house competition changed format slightly, moving off

the sports field after the Junior and Seniors played Multisport.

New challenges opened up the house points on offer to teams taking on

each other in debating, gaming, theatre sports and a bake-off. These com-

petitions have taken place throughout the year at lunchtimes and bring stu-

dents from all year levels together.

The Bake-Off required each house team to show off their baking skills with

different items including: a show-stopper, cultural bake, tray bake and

house cupcake. The three judges, Ms Marsick, Mrs Roberts and Mrs

Wright, tasted and scored each item and declared INGHAM House the

winner.

Teams of student from all year levels faced each other over the debating

table with a series of debates.

House Results for Term 3:

BACOT 4th place with 23 points

BELL 3rd place with 25.5 points

INGHAM 1st equal place with 29 points

IRVINE 1st equal place with 29 points

MacDONALD 5th place with 21 points

MINERVA 6th place with 20.5 points

With one more competition coming up in Term 4, it all rests with the Year 13s

to add points for their house with the Trivia Quiz. The winning house will be

announced at the Senior Honours ceremony.

May the best house win!

Child Care Service

The primary school teachers’ strike left parents and

caregivers having to arrange alternative care for their

children. To help out our staff members with young

children, the school offered a child-care service for the

day. Organised by Mrs Spencer, the twenty-seven

children ranging from five to twelve years were

supervised by senior Early Childhood Education

students. Activities such as art, dance and drama, a

visit to the school library, and games in the gym kept

the youngsters busy and happy. Lots of new friends

were made and everyone wanted to come back to

Howick College for another day of fun!

A very big thankyou to our students for their time; we

are sure they also learnt a lot from the experience.

Snow Trip

Mrs Gibson, Mr Hodson and a group of twenty-four

students headed to Mt Ruapehu for a weekend on the

slopes at the Whakapapa ski field. The group headed

off on Friday afternoon and enjoyed a quick dinner in

Taumarunui before arriving at Pipers Lodge, were they

were well looked after by Bruce and Diane—a very big

thank-you to both of them.

The weather on the mountain stayed sunny and clear

which meant everyone had a wonderful time in the

snow—what a great weekend!

International Students

Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb

Our International Students had the exciting

opportunity this term to join the Yr 11 CMT field

trip and experience one of Auckland’s iconic

landmarks up close. It was a real thrill to stand

“on top of the world” and take in the stunning

views of the surrounding harbour and beyond.

Students were fascinated to learn about the

bridge’s history and construction and gain an

appreciation of the impact it has made to the

development of Auckland as a city.

Definitely an adventure they will remember long

after they return home!

Kelly Sports Multi-Sports Day for International Students A group of our more sports minded students took up the challenge to

engage in some friendly competition against international students

from Macleans College.

Students were especially keen to try their hand at the Kiwi classics of

Ripper Rugby and Netball, surprising the coaches with their natural

ability.

It was great to see them getting involved and making the most of

their time in New Zealand.

Board of Trustees

With day light saving almost here, we can look back at Term 3 and reflect on

another successful winter sports programme. Not all teams may have achieved

their desired results; however they played with the right attitude and with pride,

which was very pleasing to see. Term Three was a hive of activity for a number

of sports teams, drama classes, and for the senior students who sat their

practice exams in the last couple of weeks of the term.

The refurbishment process, whilst having a couple of hiccups, is progressing

well and looking to be completed by start of Term One next year.

This week the Board spent time becoming informed of the status of the NCEA

results to date. The Senior Leadership Team and the Heads of Learning Areas

are putting in place a programme for the ‘at-risk’ students to provide additional

support and opportunities for them to succeed. We continue to strive to improve

and excel at Howick College and these opportunities confirm our desire for the

success of all of our students. The staff work extremely hard to give our stu-

dents as much opportunity as possible to achieve and succeed, and they

should be complemented for going the extra distance. It is also however the

students’ requirement to put in their best effort at all times.

Term Three saw the student trustee election take place and I would like to

congratulate Ethan McCormick on his election win. The board is looking forward

to working with Ethan, who has established his place in Howick College as

Junior Scholar as well as winning numerous speech competitions. We know he

will be working hard to deliver a better school environment for our students. I

would also like to take this opportunity to thank Connor Nelson for the

wonderful work he has done as student trustee on the board. He has set an

incredibly high standard for future student trustees, and also as part of the new

student leadership structure. I wish Connor the best for his studies and future

endeavours.

Term Three is one of my favorites, as I get to be out around the fields and

courts on Saturday morning come rain, hail or shine. For a few hours each

Saturday I am there, supporting our students and their teams, as they represent

Howick College, as are many other parents. It is wonderful to see our students

giving back to the school in coaching, managing, and umpiring our teams. I also

see many of the staff and leadership team supporting their students and I am

sure this is appreciated.

Congratulations to all the teams who competed in Tournament Week and did

Howick College proud. Special congratulations go to the Girls Soccer 1st X1,

who made it to the National Tournament for the first time in over 30 years. The

Premier Netball Team finished third in the UNISS tournament, and now head off

to defend their national title in the coming week. Well done!

I would like to wish all students and family members a relaxing and enjoyable

holiday break, and look forward to seeing you back in mid-October for the

final push towards NCEA success for senior students and the hard work in

the lead up to junior exams.

Regards,

Roger Gribble, BoT Chair
