HighDynamicRangeGlobalShutterCMOSSensor1.BackgroundCMOSImagesensorswithaglobalshutter(GS)areidealforavarietyofapplicationsincludingfactoryautomation,unmannedaerialvehicles,andautomobileadvanceddriver-assistancesystems(ADAS).Fortheseapplications,CMOSimagingsensorswithaglobalshutterareusedtoavoidimagedegradationcausedbyrollingshutter(RS)distortion.Figure1showsanimagequalitycomparisonbetweenarollingshutterimagerandaglobalshutterimager.
TheimagequalitydegradationintherollingshutterimageriscausedbytheexposureprocedureasshowninFigure2.Intherollingshutterexposureprocedure,pixelsineachrowareexposedatslightlydifferentinstances.Thisresultsinatimedelaybetweeneachrowandcausestheimagedistortionwhencapturingveryfastmovingobjects.Ontheotherhand,inaglobalshutterimager,eachpixelrowisexposedsimultaneously;therefore,theimagercancapturethelightsignalsineveryrowwithoutatimedelay.Inadditiontotheglobalshutterfunctionality,imagingsensorsforgeneralapplicationsarestillexpectedtohavehighperformancecharacteristicsinallotheraspects,includinglownoise,highsensitivity,highsaturation,andhighdynamicrange.Keepingthoseadditionalspecificationshighwhileadding

2.FeaturesofCanon’sglobalshutterimagerCanon’sglobalshutterCMOSsensorhasthecapabilitytocapturefastmovingobjectaccurately(distortion-free).Withinthisnewsensor,Canonintroducednoveldrivetechnologyresultinginadrasticallyenhancedsaturationsignal.Inaddition,Canonengineeredanewpixelstructurewithoptimizedgeometrytocollectlightefficiently,whichachieveshighsensitivityandlownoiseperformance.Theupdateddrivetechnologyalongwiththenewpixeldesignallowssensorperformancewitharemarkablyhighdynamicrangeallowingimagecreationinsituationswherethereisawidedifferenceinbrightness.Figure3showsanimageofCanon’snew5megapixel,2/3inchCMOSsensor.Ithasasquarepixelarrangementwith5.33millioneffectivepixels(2592x2056).Thesensorhasaglobalelectronicshutterforcontrollingthechargeaccumulationtimeandanallpixelprogressivereadoutof120fps.

3.TechnicaladvancesForthefirsttime,Canonintroducedalightguidestructurewithintheglobalshutterpixel,makingitpossibletocollectlightfromawidevarietyofangles.Thelightguidecontributestoincreasedsensitivityandwideincidentlightangledetection.Figure4showsaFDTD(Finitedifferentialtimedomainmethod)lightpropagationsimulationwithandwithoutalightguide.Inthissimulation,theincidentlightangleis15degrees.
