How to reach ‘Het Pand’By public transport

- Arriving at Brussels airport: Th e airport City Express leaves from within the airport building (fl oor -1) and takes you to one of the

main stations in Brussels (subsequently Noord/Nord, Centraal/Central and Zuid/Midi), where you can switch to one of the many intercity trains(IC) to, or via “Gent-Sint-Pieters, Ghent’s main railway station (Directions Brugge, Knokke, Blankenberghe, Oostende all stop in Ghent). Some trains run directly from the airport to “Gent-Sint-Pieters.Ghent is on the crossroads of the international lines “London - Brussel - Köln” and “Paris - Lille - Antwerpen”

- From the railway station “Gent Sint-Pieters”: Take tram 1 from the tunnel under the railway station (every 6 minutes), get off at the “’Korenmarkt” and

walk over the bridge “Sint-Michielshelling” up to the Sint Michaels church. “Het Pand” is situated next to the church.

From the arrival on European territory onwards, young fe-male and male refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants are extremely vulnerable to several types of gen-

der-based violence. Th is is one of the conclusions that can be drawn from a Community-based Participatory Research Project that has been conducted in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. Th e aim of the project is twofold: to develop a prevention tool which can be used by refugees and asylum seekers themselves and to raise aware-ness on this topic through participatory research.

With EC Daphne funding, this project is steered by Belgian (ICRH-University Ghent, Zijn, Nederlandstalige Vrouwenraad), Dutch (MOVISIE, Pharos) and British (TandemCom) research bodies and organisations active in the fi eld of gender-based vio-lence, women rights and health of refugees. It has been conducted in close partnership with 21 community researchers and a large community advisory board.

During the Seminar “Hidden Violence is a Silent Rape: Pre-vention of Gender-based Violence against Refugees & Asylum Seekers in Europe” we wish to present the innovative participatory approach of this project, the research results as well as the preven-tion tool. In eight workshops with good practices from all over Europe, we want to formulate policy and practice recommenda-tions. We discuss these recommendations with a panel of policy makers on European, national and regional level. With all partici-pants we wish to make a commitment: as from February 15th 2008 (onwards) we will take the health of refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants in Europe seriously and we will plan ac-tions to prevent any further gender-based violence against these vulnerable persons.

Eens aangekomen op Europees grondgebied, zijn jonge vrouwelijke en mannelijke vluchtelingen, asielzoekers en mensen zonder wettig verblijf bijzonder kwetsbaar voor

verschillende vormen van gendergerelateerd geweld. Dit is één van de conclusies van een gemeenschapsgericht participatief onder-zoek dat in België, Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk wordt gevoerd. Het doel van het project is tweeledig. Enerzijds het ont-wikkelen van een preventie-instrument dat kan gebruikt worden door vluchtelingen en asielzoekers en anderzijds bewustmaking van het ruime publiek.

Met EC Daphne fondsen wordt dit project geleid door Belgi-sche (ICRH-Universiteit Gent, Zijn, Nederlandstalige Vrouwen-raad), Nederlandse (Movisie, Pharos) en Britse (TandemCom) onderzoeksgroepen en organisaties die actief zijn op het gebied van gendergerelateerd geweld, vrouwenrechten en gezondheid van vluchtelingen. Het project wordt uitgevoerd in nauwe samenwer-king met 21 onderzoekers die zelf vluchteling of asielzoeker zijn en met een ruime adviesgroep uit het werkveld.

Tijdens het Seminarie “Hidden Violence is a Silent Rape: Pre-vention of Gender-based Violence against Refugees & Asylum See-kers in Europe” stellen we de innovatieve participatieve aanpak in het project, de onderzoeksresultaten en het preventie-instrument graag aan een ruim publiek voor. In acht workshops met goede praktijken van over gans Europa, willen we praktijk- en beleids-voorstellen formuleren. We bespreken deze voorstellen in een panel met Europese, nationale en regionale beleidsmakers. We willen met alle participanten een engagement aangaan: vanaf 15 februari 2008 willen we de gezondheid van vluchtelingen, asielzoe-kers en mensen zonder wettig verblijf in Europa ernstig nemen. En samen acties opzetten om geweld tegen hen vanaf dan beter te voorkomen.

Dès qu’ils arrivent en territoire européenne les jeunes fem-mes et hommes réfugiés, demandeurs d’asile et sans pa-piers sont particulièrement vulnérables et exposés à diff é-

rentes formes de violence liée au genre. C’est une des conclusions à tirer d’une recherche de proximité participative menée en Belgique, aux Pays-Bas et en Royaume-Uni. Ce projet a un double objective: d’une part le développement d’un instrument de prévention qui peut être utilisé par les réfugiés et demandeurs d’asile eux-mêmes et d’autre part la sensibilisation du public à ce problème par la re-cherche participative.

Avec le fi nancement par le programme Daphne de l’UE ce projet est dirigé par des groupes de recherche et des organisa-tions belges (ICRH-Université de Gand, Zijn asbl, Nederlandsta-lige Vrouwenraad), néerlandaises (Movisie, Pharos) et brittanique (TandemCom) qui sont actives dans le domaine de la violence liée au genre, les droits de femmes et la santé des réfugiés. Le projet est mené à bien en étroite collaboration avec 21 chercheurs, qui sont eux-mêmes des réfugiés ou demandeurs d’asile, et un grand comité d’avis de proximité.

Pendant le séminaire “Hidden Violence is a Silent Rape: Pre-vention of Gender-based Violence against Refugees & Asylum See-kers in Europe” nous présenterons au grand public l’approche par-ticipative et innovatrice du projet, les résultats de la recherche ainsi que l’instrument de prévention. Au sein de huit ateliers de travail focalisant sur des bonnes pratiques des quatre coins de l’Europe nous souhaitons formuler des recommandations pratiques et po-litiques. Nous discuterons de ces recommandations dans un panel auquel participent des décideurs politiques européens, nationaux et régionaux. De concert avec tous les participants nous voulons à partir du 15 février 2008 nous engager à prendre au sérieux la santé des réfugiés, des demandeurs d’asile et des personnes sans papiers en Europe. Et d’entreprendre ensemble des actions afi n de prévenir des violences contre ces groupes cibles.
