PREPARATION1. Seal the entire paddle with the Multi-Purpose Sealer; using the glaze wash brush. Lightly sand; wipe off with a lint-free cloth.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSBasecoating Paddle2. Basecoat the surface with Bleached Sand; using the glaze wash brush. Basecoat the side edges and backside of the paddle by loading one corner of the glaze wash brush with Tomato Red, the other cor-ner with Black Plum, in a slip-slap motion apply to the paddle. Do not over blend the colors together, you want both colors to show. When, dry repeat basecoating steps to the side edges and backside.

Image Transfer Background3. Lay the paddle on the Old Red Barn paper, trace around, cut-out with scissors. Apply a generous coat of the Image Transfer Medium to the surface area and the front side of the paper, lay the paper face down and fl at into the Medium pressing fi rmly.

When dry, use a wet terry cloth over the image to gently scrub away the paper, until the image begins to show clearly. Then switch to using your fi ngers for the remaining fi bers. If you are not sure if you have removed all of the paper, let it dry for a few minutes, any remaining paper on the image will show as fuzz. Remoisten the image and rub it away. Allow to dry.

Applying Gesso4. Place some Gesso on your palette. Be sure to close the jar until you need more and keep the edges of the jar clean to ensure that the jar will re-seal properly. Pick up a small quantity of Gesso with the edge of the palette knife and begin applying it to the surface. Work with small amounts at a time to give you more control. Your application should be very thin. Lay the knife fl at to apply the medium, then stand it up on the edge to lightly scrape away excess.

Apply randomly in small overlapping patches to avoid developing a set pattern; refer to photo for place-ment. Allow to dry well and then very lightly sand to remove any sharp or loose pieces.

Rouging Background Color5. Dampen a blue shop towel with water, pick up Faux Glazing Medium and Charcoal Grey, slightly blend on your palette, then randomly rouge color over the surface (the paper and Gesso areas); refer to photo for placement. Allow to dry.

Crossed Stenciling6. With the Crossed stencil and Soft Black, randomly stencil over the surface; using the med stencil brush. Position the stencil on the surface; refer to photo for placement. Secure with the Frog Tape or hold with your fi ngers. Load the med stencil brush with a bit of Soft Black, swirl the brush on a blue shop towel to remove excess. Apply color in a circular motion one direction and then in a circular motion in the other direction (changing directions frequently) over the stencil. Fill in some of the design fully and leave other areas incomplete.

When completed, this application should have a slight distressed appearance. If it is too solid or perfect, simply use a moist piece of the blue shop towel with a little Faux Glazing Medium, to gently rub away some of the excess color. Carefully remove stencil by holding one end with your fi ngers and lifting the opposite end. Clean stencil and brush immediately; using the Deco-Magic Cleaner.

When dry, lightly mist over the surface with the matte spray.

Transferring Design7. When dry, transfer the barn setting to the surface; using the graph ruler. To aid in the transferring of any straight lines, drag the stylus along the ruler’s edge.

Background Pines8. With a pencil and graph ruler, transfer the center line for each pine. Work only on a couple of pines at a time. Slightly pre-dampen the surface area with clean water. This will help the paint bleed; giving the boughs a softer eff ect.

Use the #10 fi lbert loaded with Black Green across the chisel edge. Up on the chisel edge, vertically pull the very top of the pine. Horizontally tap from left to right for the boughs, slowly and slightly widening as you work towards the base of the pine. Allow a bit of the background to show through; so the pine doesn’t look like a triangle.

Repeat the same steps with the remaining pines. When dry, repeat steps with Black Green, randomly tapping on the boughs; to deepen. Now repeat the steps lightly with Avocado, randomly tapping on the boughs; for highlight.

Background Shrubs9. With the med Texture Brush and Avocado, dance in the shrubs to the left of the barn setting. Then with Wasabi Green on the toe of the Texture Brush, lightly dance on each shrub; for highlighting and separation.

For proper use of the Texture brush, use the follow-ing method: Dampen the bristles with water to start

the separation of bristles. Tap bristles into the paint on your palette, hold it perpendicular to your pal-ette, pounce it up and down to get some of the paint off —keeping the paint sparse on the brush. Note—this brush can be used on the whole foot or just the toe. Tap lightly on the surface, dance with the brush up and down, rolling the brush in diff erent directions in be-tween your fi ngers when it is up in the air (like dancing the twist, light on your feet). Allow some drying time in between dances so the paint sets up and you don’t end up with a globby or muddy look.

Foreground Shrubs13. To complete foreground shrubs, refer to steps in no. 9 Background Shrubs; using the sm Texture brush.

FINISHING14. To protect your painted piece, varnish the entire paddle with the DuraClear Matte Varnish; using the Oval Wash Combo brush. This brush doesn’t leave any brushstroke marks after the varnish has dried.-
