SEAFORTH POLICE BEAT NEWS

Non urgent service: 131 444 In an emergency please call 000 Police Beat 4959 0056 Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000

(Provided by Officer in Charge—Senior Constable Adam McLoughlin) During last month a male person decided that he would ride his unregistered uninsured motorbike on the Belmunda Road, Belmunda in front of Police. When Police attempted to intercept the motorbike, the rider decided to evade Police and speed off. With help from a local community member Police were able to locate the rider of the motorbike. The rider (from Mackay) then decided to obstruct Police. As a result he found himself being arrested and transported to the Mackay Watch House where he was charged for evading Police, obstructing Police and riding an unregistered and uninsured motorbike. These are the actions of a minority of people in the Belmunda area, but these are the actions that ruin it for everybody else who are doing the right thing by obeying the law. I conducted boat patrols around the Seaforth area with numerous vessels being intercepted. Boat operators were subject to breath testing, licence and registration checks and also safety equipment inspections. One boat owner being the subject of attention for not having the minimum mandatory safety gear on board (life jackets) and providing a sample of breath right on the limit. A marine infringement notice was issued and he was escorted back to the boat ramp. Remember that the drink driving laws are the same for operating a vessel as they are for a motor vehicle. Recently, I have received complaints of persons driving on the Cape Hillsborough beach. Please remember that you are only allowed to access the beach to launch and retrieve boats directly in front of the access area, vehicles are not to drive up and down the beach to sightsee or for any other reason. There are fines that can be issued in such instances. Stay safe on the roads and on the water. Cheers Adam

Seaforth Town Rural Fire Brigade Update Following low rainfalls during our wet season, the grass is drying out faster than normal. Mackay rural locations have recorded 10 to 12 wild fires for the last four weeks. So be prepared for the fire season. Clean up dead grass and leaves from your residence, and if you need to use a small fire, you must have a permit to burn. Rural Brigades will even attend permitted fires if requested. John Byrne

100 Years of Anzac A huge crowd of locals and visitors attended the Seaforth Anzac Day Dawn Parade on 25th April. The parade was led by the TS Pioneer Naval Cadets and Piper—Aaron Gray. It was wonderful to see all the school children in their uniforms, members of the public, local clubs and organisations all participating in the march. Guest speakers on the day included Colonel James Dittmar (retired), Rev Keith McCollim and Cr Greg Martin (Mackay Regional Council). The last post was played by bugler, Cadet Leading Seaman Tianne Barker and the flag was lowered by Seaforth State School students Alexandra Watson and Riley Beggs. After the service members of the public were invited to attend a sausage sizzle at the Rural Fire Building. On behalf of the Seaforth RSL Sub-Branch Inc, I would like to thank everyone for their attendance at the Dawn Service and for their generous support for the Annual Raffle. Seaforth Community Youth - SCY

May Youth Night

Well it’s been another awesome monthly Youth Night. This time the teens had hotdogs and made their own hot chocolates as well as toasting marshmallows by the brazier. They initiated a game of football again out on the oval and played pool also.

There were some crazy selfies taken as well as some great group shots. Many funny conversations were had and I feel very lucky to have been included in many of them. There is a real sense of ownership coming from these teens towards this night with some saying they would like to take part in the running of a Mega Market BBQ at some stage to earn some money towards these evenings and a few showing interest in doing some face painting at the Fun Day to be held in July.

I was particularly impressed in the friendships these guys have with each other and the care they have for one another, regardless of being someone new, or long time friends.

Once again thanks to all the teens, their parents and the Progress Association for continuing to support these nights. Our next Youth Night will be held on Friday the 12th June from 7-10pm. Please watch the Seaforth Community Youth Facebook Page or Seaforth Community Noticeboard Facebook page for upcoming events and information.

All about community AN initiative which has just been announced in this year’s Budget is that of the Stronger Communities Programme. This will provide funding for small capital projects that deliver social benefits for local communities, and there is $150,000 available in every electorate across the country. Funding of

between $1000 and $20,000 is available for genuine not-for-profit organisations and my office will be responsible for consulting with communities to identify high priority projects. Keep this in mind if you know of something that you think fits the bill and contact my office for more information. Detecting cancer Another move which will be appreciated by all will be the increase in screening programs for both bowel cancer and cervical cancer. We’re investing an additional $95.9 million to ensure Australians aged 50 to 74 will receive a free, at home bowel cancer screening kit every two years by 2020. This is the second most common cause of cancer deaths, and there are 80 Australians dying from bowel cancer each week. If the cancer is detected and treated early, 9 out of 10 cases can be successfully treated. There is also a new test for cervical cancer which will mean that Pap smears only need to be conducted every five years. Ward off flu STILL on the top of all things medical, I would encourage you to get your flu shot this winter. There’s a new improved vaccine available, and this is your best defence against the flu. Under the Government’s National Immunisation Program, the flu vaccine is provided free to those who are more than six months of age with medical conditions that place them at risk of complications, most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, pregnant women and those aged 65 and over. Find out more from your GP. Women in business DO you know an outstanding businesswoman? Nominations are now open for the 2015 Telstra Business Women’s Awards and it’s an opportunity to champion the efforts of local women. You can find out more about what’s involved at www.womensawards.com and nominations close on June 28.

I RECENTLY made a moving trip to Cape Hillsborough where a special plaque was rededicated in memory of the three crew members from RACQ CQ Rescue who lost their lives off the coast there in 2003. Terry Eva, who lost his 31-year-old son Stewart in that terrible disaster, made the trek up to the Turtle Point lookout along with Chris Wright (Chairman) and Martin Cleland (CEO) and other representatives from our region's rescue helicopter service. As the local MP, it fills me with enormous pride whenever I see that blue

and yellow chopper above the skies of places such as Seaforth and Cape Hillsborough but at the same time, one cannot forget that fateful night on 17 October 2003. I'm sure I speak for everyone in saying we salute RACQ CQ Rescue not only for their incredible work, but also for preserving the memory of Stewart, Craig Liddington and Andrew Carpenter, who were called away on a mission that night and sadly, never came home. THE Mt Ossa Seaforth Road may have been graded once again ahead of the school holidays and crushing season but my commitment to have that road sealed has not waned. With the dry season upon us, the number of tourists coming to the Hibiscus Coast has clearly picked up from a few months ago and while the road is better now for what it is, we all know it does not last and the solution is putting bitumen down along that nine clicks of dirt. I will continue to lobby the new State Labor Government to address this important local issue in the interests of road safety, tourism and the wider community, which has waited long enough to see some action. FINALLY, I can advise that I have kicked off a new fitness regime so if you see me power walking up and down Seaforth Beach, you'll know exactly why. In this job, offerings of cake and scones for morning tea is very much the norm and given the amount of driving I do (103,000 kilometres since February 2014), one must be careful to ensure they exercise on a regular basis and watch what they eat! That's something I was reminded of when attending a Heart Foundation breakfast at Parliament House and hence, I have decided to make a start in terms of getting active again... just like my youth when I even rode my push bike up to Calen! Can you believe that half of 2015 has flown by already? My Dad and I were chatting the other day and he said the older he gets he feels like time flies by so much quicker. This got me thinking about time and the quality in which we have with

our family and friends and how we prioritise our day to day activities. It’s so easy to become swallowed into the vortex of the daily grind, between work, school, bills, bills, bills and so many other “important” things that your head starts to spin! Then all of a sudden the universe sends you a reminder that you need to take a breath and take stock of the “truly important” things. For me it was the chat I had with a friend who has sadly recently lost her husband, this was my reminder from the universe to focus on the “truly important” things. “Why wait to wish someone was here after they are gone, when you can hold them tight now in your arms where they belong”. There is still time to show off your fabulous cooking, knitting and crochet skills with our upcoming annual Knitting, Crochet and Cookery competition. Open to all members of the community along with our members, there is even section for the under 17’s. SECTION 3 – UNDER 17 YEARS CLASS 1: Patty Cakes – 6 cakes – Iced and decorated, papers allowed. Please hand in all entries by 1pm Saturday 20th June, 2015 and don’t forget your coupons from the Country Life magazine. We would love to see some new faces this year to add to the competition. Sixteen QCWA Seaforth Branch ladies went out and about on Friday the 15th May to see the wonderful Glenn Miller Orchestra. A huge thankyou to the MECC Manager Mark Fawcett for helping me to make a memorable evening for my ladies. I’m looking forward to our next Out and About. If you would like to join us on our next outing, become a member of our branch, or would like to pop down to “The Shed” for our weekly Craft, Chat and Cuppa mornings every Tuesday at 9am please contact us at [email protected] or send us a snailmail to PO Box 49 Seaforth Post office. We would love to hear an ideas for upcoming activities.
