HIAS Primary ICT Leaders’ Meetings Wednesday 25.11.09 and Thursday 03.12.09 

Focus: „Next Generation Learning and the London MLE in Action‟. Venue: Parklands Junior School, Havering Road, Romford, RM1 4QXDates: Wednesday 25.11.09 and repeated on Thursday 03.12.09 Time: 4.15pm-6.00pm. 

Highlights include

  Pupils and staff from Elm Park Primary School to share some of the activities that they havebeen undertaking with games-based learning, Apple Macs, podcasting, digital video, the London MLE

  eSafety scheme of work materials from the London Grid for Learning.   Suzanne Nott from Crownfield Junior School will explain how the London MLE is transforming

organisational efficiency and the extended schools agenda.

  Find out how Towers Junior School are rolling-out the London MLE in school and at home.

  Explore how to embed espresso in the London MLE.  Karen Webley of Scargill Junior School will share outcomes form the recent Technology Week

The HIAS ICT Team will share outcomes from the current Teach-IT pilot* (see below).  Teresa Carter of Parklands Junior School will explore how visualisers support learning and teaching.

  Find out what the changes to Ofsted inspection arrangements mean for ICT.  Discover how parents can apply Home Access Grants for free ICT equipment.  Explore issues to do with Safeguarding and eSafety – resources will be available to support this.  Details of the next round of HIAS ICT Innovative ICT Bursaries

ICT Excellence Awards and ICT Mark Accreditation

The HIAS ICT Team and Engayne Primary School receive ICT Excellence Award recognition

On Thursday 19th November 2009 the HIAS ICT Team and Engayne Primary School

were recognised at the Becta ICT Excellence Awards‟ ceremony in Bristol. The HIAS

ICT Team were awarded „Winners‟ in the „Support for Schools‟ category and the team

from Engayne Primary School were awarded „Runners-up‟ in the „Leadership,

Management and Collaboration‟ category. Both the HIAS ICT Team and Engayne

Primary School are delighted by the awards that recognise the success of ICT in Havering at a national level.

Scargill Infant School and Scargill Junior School receive ICT Mark accreditation

In July 2009, following an extensive external assessment Scargill Infant School wasawarded the prestigious ICT Mark by Becta.  The award recognises the school‟s success indeveloping the strategic use of ICT in both administration and across the curriculum. HeadTeacher, Kath Keeper commented “We are delighted to be awarded the ICT Mark. It

recognises our positive approach to ICT and the benefits it is bringing to our children. ”  In July 2009, ScargillJunior School was awarded the ICT Mark too.  In the ICT Mark Assessor’s report the followingelements were highlighted as ‘Areas of strength/outstanding practice within the self -reviewframework’:- Passion and vision for handheld learning supporting independent, pupil led learning across the

curriculum. Commitment and enthusiasm from all staff. Management, implementation and review ofinnovations led by the ICT co-ordinator. Amanda Ireland, Scargill Junior School’s Head Teacher commented, “We are thrilled at achieving the ICT Mark. It is recognition for the fabulous work we are doing toenable our children to achieve lifelong learning and skills in the 21st Century.”

Becta Next Generation Learning campaign starts ‘The Journey’ at Elm Park Primary School 

“The Journey” is an eight-part series of video diariesfollowing Elm Park Primary School‟s transformationthrough ICT. As well as a new building, uniform, logo andstaff to think about, they want technology to play a centralrole. The school aims to give children, and parents,

access to a full range of technology. They want children toaccess learning through the technologies they are used tousing. They want to help parents play a bigger role in theirchildren‟s education. But how easy will this be? There‟sthe funding to consider. And staff and parents will need

training and support. This is your chance to be a fly-on-the-wall. Follow the ups and downs and share thecelebrations as the Headteacher, Vicki Knox, her staff, pupils and parents start on the journey of a lifetime…

Next Generation Learning – are you committed yet? Harold Court Primary School is...

The Government’s Next Generation Learningcampaign is encouraging parents/carers/governors totake an increased interest in ICT provision withinschools.Harold Court Primary School recently signed-up to theNext Generation Learning Charter and is committed toattaining ICT Mark accreditation. The School received acertificate recognising its commitment and is able to use

the logo on the School website and stationery.

Becta's Online Self-review Framework (SRF) offers a route for assessing

and improving a school's use of ICT as part of Next Generation Learning.The framework is free to use and is linked to the national standards for ICT. It can help:

Show what "good" use of ICT looks like

Benchmark your progress against other schools Identify your strengths Produce action plans for improvement.

London Managed Learning Environment - MLE

London Managed Learning Environment

  15 of the 18 secondary schools and 40 of the 59 primary schools are now onboard.

  Remember you must have a working MLE in place by the end of the Summer Term 2010. 

The HIAS ICT Team will fund for set-up and first year costs.

Effective practice with the London Managed Learning Environment - Towers Junior School

Staff at Towers Junior School have been working-to develop their

MLE for staff and pupil use. As well as web access, the School has

installed an LCD screen linked to a laptop in the staffroom to enable

all staff to quickly see at-a-glance what is happening. Alongside thisstaff are developing content for pupil-use in-class and away from

Pupils at Scargill Junior School win another national Handheld Learning Award

For the second year in a row pupils from Scargill Junior School achieved third placein „The Learners‟ Y Factor‟ at the national Handheld Learning Awards at TheBarbican, presented by Jason Bradbury of Channel 5‟s „The Gadget Show‟. Led byteacher and ICT leader Karen Webley, the children showed the audience and judges the excellent ways in which they use handheld learning to support learningand teaching. This included sharing their teacher and pupil joint planning for

Technology Week and a live survey with the audience using SmartPhones andWildKey to gather data!

LGfL National Poetry Day 2009 – Live and kicking from Crownfield Junior SchoolOn Thursday 8th October 2009, Havering pupils celebratedNational Poetry Day by sharing their prose with young people fromover 100 schools worldwide via a live video-conferencing (VC) linkfrom Crownfield Junior School. Pupils were joined by close to 3,000young people from countries across the world, including France,Finland and Texas, USA to read and talk about poetry with poetsJohn Hegley, Michael Rosen, Paul Cookson and rap artist Breis.Crownfield’s Head Teacher Gary Nott said, “It is quite amazing to

think that in this classroom our students are sharing poems andtheir learning experiences with other students all over the world.” 

Teach-IT pilotAs part of the HIAS ICT Team‟s strategy to explore new ways to use ICT to supportlearning and teaching a pilot group has been set-up to trial the TEACH-IT materialsfrom www.do-be.co.uk

The materials explore the use of digital Imaging, digital still and video camera,Google Earth, mp3/mp4 audio files, games consoles/Nintendo DS/Nintendo Wii,Podcasting with Podium/GarageBand and Web and Web 2.0 technologies

Lights, camera, action at Squirrels Heath Infant School

Reception teacher, Isabella Martin has transformed her „home

corner‟ into a film studio. With a laptop, digital video and digital

stills camera – children are undertaking photoshoots and

creating films. She has added a red carpet, a „film awards‟

backdrop and some cardboard spotlights. The children love it!

Havering Primary Renovation/Transformation Programme 

On Friday 23rd October 2009, Teachers from Towers Junior, Hylands Primary,Elm Park Primary and Gidea Park Primary School svisited the RM RealCentre, as part developing the new ICT provision within their schools. Theyexplored an impressive array of new technologies, developing their vision andconsidering ways to transform learning and teaching through ICT.

Ofsted and ICT 

Feedback from recent Ofsted inspections under the new framework showed a clear focus on the need foreffective differentiation in discrete ICT lessons, tracking of the assessment of pupils in ICT and individual pupiltargets for ICT. The „Ofsted - Importance of ICT‟ report in 2008 highlighted the Assessment of ICT and theteaching of Control Technology and Datalogging as areas of weakness in schools.

Safeguarding 

‘Safeguarding’ is now a key part of the new Ofsted Framework. As part of this it is recommended schoolshave a whole-school eSafety strategy to help address this. This should include (amongst other things) eSafetyactivities embedded in schemes of work, annual eSafety awareness sessions for staff, parents/carers,governors and other stakeholders and an eSafety Policy. HIAS ICT Competitions

Printing Inks - Engayne helps to save the environment and wins a birdbox with a webcam

Engayne Primary School has won a borough wide challenge organised byCartridge World Romford to collect the most printer cartridges forrecycling in a school year. The school collected 368 cartridges in total!By using recycled printer cartridges the school made considerablesavings, allowing school funds to be spent on other equipment andraising the importance of green issues. The school was presented with atrophy, and a prize of bird box fitted with a webcam in recognition of this.The competition is running again this year. Please contact
