MATCH BOX INDUSTRY(AUTOMATIC PLANT) [EIRI/3181]The origin of the safety match industry inIndia goes back to the beginning of thiscentury. Around 1910 immigrant Japanesefamil ies who settled in Calcutta beganmaking matches with simple hand- andpower-operated machines. Local peoplesoon learned the necessary skills and anumber of small match factories sprangup in and around Calcutta. These smallmatch factories could not meet the totalrequirements of the country however, andIndia began to import matches fromSweden and Japan. During the First WorldWar, when Swedish matches could not beimported, the Indian market was fed mainlyby imported matches from Japan and bythe locally made ones which followed theJapanese pattern introduced in Calcutta. After the war, factories in Calcutta wereunable to compete with imports, andhandmade match production shifted tosouthern India, especial ly in theRamanathapuram and Tirunelveli districtsof Tamil Nadu State. This shift was due tothe pioneering efforts of P. Iya Nadar andA. Shanmuga Nadar who went to Calcuttato learn the process from Purna ChandraRay, a local businessman, who had learnedthe trade in Germany. The Nadars set up anumber of manual match production unitsin extremely poor regions of Tamil Nadu, where a combination of the dry climate, cheap labour and avai labi li ty of rawmaterials from nearby Kerala created idealconditions for match production.

WALNUT PROCESSING PLANT(EIRI/3183)

Georgia is considered one of the primarycenters of the origin of walnut. There aregreat prospects for i ts development.Walnut is characterized with highproductivity in mountain areas of East andwest Georgia on the elevation of 500-900m from see level, as well as in high areaof Ratcha-Lechkhumi and East Caucasuspre-mountain areas. Despite thesignificantly suitable natural and soi lconditions for walnut growing in Georgia, demand on local market is more 4-8thousand tons than the in-shel l walnutproduction. That is why an amount ofwalnut is imported from other countries inhigh market prices. Therefore study andtesting of the local germplasm, selectionof high productive varieties and theirextension in farms have great importancefor filling this deficit. This article describesthe materials of walnut germplasm studyfor Georgia. Prospective varieties andadvanced selections are distinguished toeach ecological zones of Georgia. Severalwalnut selections of lateral type and semi-dwarf growth are bread from Georgianwalnut breeding program. The biological, agricultural and pomological description ofselected varieties and new selections arealso mentioned.

SULPHURIC ACID) CAP: 6TPD[EIRI/3184]

Dicalcium phosphate is the calciumphosphate with the formula CaHPO4 andits dihydrate. The "di" prefix in the commonname arises because the formation of theHPO42– anion involves the removal oftwo protons from phosphoric acid, H3PO4.It is also known as dibasic calcium

phosphate or calcium monohydrogenphosphate. Dicalcium phosphate is usedas a food additive, it is found in sometoothpastes as a polishing agent and is abiomaterial. Dibasic calcium phosphate isproduced by the neutralization of calciumhydroxide with phosphoric acid, whichprecipitates the dihydrate as a solid. At60°C the anhydrous form is precipitated:H3PO4 + Ca(OH)2 ? CaHPO4. To preventdegradation that would formhydroxyapatite, sodium pyrophosphate ortrimagnesium phosphate octahydrate areadded when for example, dibasic calciumphosphate dihydrate is to be used as apolishing agent in toothpaste. In acontinuous process CaCl2 can be treatedwith (NH4)2HPO4 to form the dihydrate:CaCl2 + (NH4)2HPO4 ? CaHPO4•2H2O.A slurry of the dihydrate is then heated toaround 65–70°C to form anhydrousCaHPO4 as a crystal l ine precipitate, typically as flat diamondoid crystals, whichare suitable for further processing.

RECYCLING OF SYNTHETICMOTOR LUBRICATION OIL

[EIRI/3185]Used oil is exactly what its name implies:any petroleum-based or synthetic oil thathas been used. Oil keeps our cars, lawnmowers, and many other machinesrunning smoothly. However, during normaluse, impurities such as dirt, metalscrapings, water, or chemicals, can getmixed in with the oil, so that in time, the oilno longer performs well. Eventually, thisused oil must be replaced with virgin or re-refined oil to do the job correctly. If youare one of the many people who changetheir own motor oil, you too need to knowhow to properly manage the used oil.

MANGANESE OREJIGGING PLANT

Manganese is one of the most importantstrategic minerals, being the one which thegreatest tonnages are required, and also theone in which the United States has had a limited

production, Manganese is an absolutenecessity in the steel industry, as this industryuses about 14 pounds of manganese in everyton of steel produced. Annual statistics showthat over 90 percent of the annual amount ofmanganese consumed in the United Statesgoes into the production of steel. From this itcan therefore be seen that the stability andaccessibility of a steady supply of manganeseore is a controlling factor in the maintenanceof the steel industry. The remaining 10 percentof the manganese consumed yearly in theUnited States is used in the manufacture of drybatteries, chemicals, glass, tile and brick. Oneof the outstanding characteristics of theutilization of manganese in steel making is thatin the process of being used, most of the metalis dissipated into the slag in a form not readilysusceptible to subsequent recovery as asecondary metal. In fact, the amounts that arereturned to use in this way are so small as tobe practical ly negligible and the ful lrequirements for each year must be net fromnew mine production.

SODA ASH PLANT(FROM SOLUTION BRINE)

Sodium carbonate is a common inorganicindustrial chemical, also known as soda ash(Na2CO3). It is widely used in the manufactureof glass, chemicals, such as sodium silicatesand sodium phosphates, the pulp and paperindustries, the manufacture of detergents andfor the treatment of water. Soda ashmanufacture by Solvay technology is a verycomplex process. The natural sodium chloridesolution (brine) is extracted and purified(removal of solid impurities by filtration andremoval of calcium and magnesium ions byprecipitation). The discovery of the chemistryof the ammonia-soda process can be tracedback to the early 1800s. A few British andFrench plants operated in 1840-1860, butwithout success. The ammonia-soda processis usually called the Solvay process becausein 1865 Ernest Solvay started the first reallysuccessful plant at couillet in Belgium. In 1874,the first successful ammonia-soda plant waserected in England. The ammonia-sodaprocess is the dominant technology usedthroughout the world, hence this process isselected for production of soda ash.

M.S. BILLET CASTING FROMSCRAP AND SPONGE IRON

USING INDUCTION FURNACEThe Induction furnace based on mini steel plantis a versatile installations where provisions areavailable for producing a range of steelproducts by Alloying and casting into variousshape. The products of steel plants are in theform of Ingots, Billets, Sheets etc. TheseInduction furnace based steel casting units aresuitable for small scale industries and mediumscale industries and yet have the capability to

complete in the internal as well as internationalmarket at all counts. In mini Billets are the basicproducts of steel from which different types ofsteel products are made such as sheets,Angles, Channels, Rods, etc. Mild steel Billetsare the basic raw material for manufacturingvarious types of re-rolled products. Mild steelbillets are used for mechanical engineeringworks such as manufacturing machines andtheir parts. Steel billets are used for productionof plate, sheets, strips, rod etc. by hot Rollingand cold Rolling process. It is the commercialforms of steels mill products which are directlyused in the Engineering Industries. However,is the steel billets is the first form of steel forproducing other shapes by rolling, forging orextrusion process. The Industries of this typein SSI or medium scale have a wide spreadimmediate and future uses and applicationswhich can at certain occasions reduce to someextent but can not be eliminated come whatmay plastics are certainly trying every best toreplaced steel strips/sheets and of course, havesucceeded in certain Areas to be considered asubstitute but it has always been from just afew counted angles. RUBBER PLANTATIONRubber is traditionally grown in India in thehinterlands of the South West Coast comprisingof the state of Kerala and adjoiningKanyakumari District of Tamilnadu. This tractis, however, now reaching a level of saturationfor rubber cultivation and the scope of furtherexpansion of the crop is very much limited.Considering this fact, the expansion of rubbercultivation, which is of prime importance forsetting up rubber production, has to take placemainly in non-traditional areas. Non-traditionalareas so far identified as almost ful ly ormarginally suitable for rubber cultivation areArunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, lowerreaches of hills of Meghalaya, Mizoram,Nagaland and Tripura excluding the other stateof India. Although the North Eastern Regionlies far outside the traditional rubber growingzone, the agro-climatic conditions obtainedhere are unique in as much as near tropicalfeatures are experienced in most parts owingto low elevations, exposure to monsoons andother moderating influences. Public SectorCorporations set up later joined rubber plantingendeavours on extensive scales. STEEL TRANSMISSION LINETOWER AND ROLLING MILL TOPRODUCE STEEL SECTIONS

The transmission line towers are comparativelyl ight structures and the maximum windpressure is the main criterion for their design. The concurrence of earth quake & intensifiedwind pressures may also be considered in theearth quake - prone areas for design of theoverhead transmission line towers. Thesetowers are fabricated by means of bolted jointsonly. The structural steels of well specifiedqual ity only are used in construction oftransmission l ine towers to ensure thepermissible stresses and other design details.Practices followed in material selection, design, fabrication, testing and must suit the fieldconditions of this country. Various designconsiderations are adopted in the design ofself-supporting steel lattice towers for overheadtransmission lines, including loads, combination of loads, permissible stresses, wind pressures likely to be experienced duringservice and atmospheric corrosion intensity.

FERRO SILICON(FROM MINERAL INGREDIENTS)Ferro alloys are used in making alloy steelsand castings of different special types asaddition agents. Ferro alloys are usually madein electric-are furnaces. Alloy steel have oftengreater l imitations on tramp elementconcentrations than plain carbon steels.Municipal ferrows scraps is largely used as partof the furnace charge to produce ferro alloys.Incinerated scrap is preferred because all ofthe consuminats are eleminiated though thissource leaves a significant proportion of tin &copper impurities, yes due to the fact that ferroalloy is typically only a small addition to thefinal steel, the dilution of impurities, containedin the ferro alloy, results in acceptableconcentrations. In steel making, variouselements are added to the molten metal toeffect various properties, eg. deoxidasion graincontroly improvement of mechanical/thermal/corrosion properties etc. Chemicals added intosteels in the bath consists of iron and theelements intended to be incorporated, hencecalled ferroalloys. These ferro alloys areproduced in electric & many other types offurnaces. A number of ferro alloys producedtoday contain very little of iron. Ferro alloys are, thus, a special class of addition agents.

CATIONIC SOFTENER(STEARIC ACID BASED)

Softening agents are surface active agents witha long hydrophobic chain and a shorterhydrophilic water-solubilizing group. The formerdetermines the softening character andgenerally differs in properties from those ofdetergents. The type of ionic charge on asoftening agent exerts a great influence on itsorientation on textile material. Softening oftextile materials was probably carried out inprehistoric times and has continued till today. Most of the Softening agents are derived fromstraight chain fatty radicals containing 12 to 18carbon atoms. In textile finishing articles, thepast decade can be considered “the age of theacrylics” and the era of the multipurpose finish.Numerous polymers farmed from acrylicmonomers have been specially ‘Tailored’ tomeet the finisher exacting requirements.Multipurpose finished have been big property-wise & economy wise.

SILICON FROM RICE HUSKRice husk is a by product of agriculture a by-product while is almost treated like waste andnot seriously bothered about Consider, India’scase every year about 60 million tonnes ofpaddy grown in the country produces upto 12million tons of rice husk in over 900,000 ricemills spread around the country. Though, mostof it is used as either a heating medium or asan animal feed. The strange fact is that 12million tons of rice husk can have a heat valueequivalent to around 20 million barrels of oil.To be more precise 3 kgs. of rice husk areequivalent to one litre of oil or 1.5 kilos of coalin heat content. Rice husk basically consistsof a mixture of moisture Carbon, Volatiles, Ashand silica in ash. Its net heating value isbetween 3010 and 3340 kilo calories per Kgmore over rice husk has low in cinerationproperties because of its sil ica content, modular shape and its light weight. In general, furnace rice husk produces heat of 65%efficiency and in special type vertical furnaceit will produce heat of 95% efficiency.

LIGHTNING ARRESTERSMaterials having few free electrons poorconductors In fact, materials that have hardlyany free electrons can be used to insulateelectricity and are called insulators, as glass,

mica, porcelain, rubber & paper. The functionof an insulator is to insulate the line conductorfrom each other and from the pole or tower.Three colours of insulator are used in overhead lines, namely. The pin insulator gets itsname from the fact that it is supported on apin. The pin holds the insulator, and theinsulator has the conductor tied on it. Pininsulators are made of either glass or porcelain. The glass insulator is always one solid pieceof glass, that is it is one piece insulator. Theporcelain insulator is also a one piece insulatorwhen used on low voltage lines but consists oftwo, three or four layers, cemented togetherto form a rigid until when used on highervoltage line. It is usually one piece for voltagebelow 23,000 volts. The use of several layersfor high voltage line helps to spill the rain andprovide a long, dry arc-over path. Pin insulatorare seldom used on transmission lines havingvoltage above 4400 volts, although some88000 volts, lines using pin insulators are inoperation today.
