FITNESS & DANCE CLASSES

AS EASY AS ABC … Exercise Class - Taught by Matthew Rundell. Bring your own 2-3 pound weights and

mat for stability exercises that encompass all of the major muscle groups. Focus on exercise that

increase muscular strength and endurance, as well as balance, range of motion, and bone density.

BALLROOM DANCING with RON AND AMY WAGAMAN Designed for those with some basic ball-

room dance experience who want to learn new dance patterns. Dances change per season. 2 levels offered:

SMOOTH DANCES & RHYTHM DANCES

BOLLYWOOD-Taught by Caroline Ferrante. Tone your stomach & upper body with these fun exercises

combining Indian and Western music.

BONE BUILDING WORK OUT - Taught by certified fitness specialist Joanne Zoladz. Concentrates on

toning, strengthening and stretching major muscle groups while sitting, standing and/or on a mat.

CARDIO RHYTHM: LOW IMPACT EXERCISE - Taught by certified fitness specialist Joanne Zoladz. Classes

include a low to moderate intensity aerobic workout along with exercise to strengthen and tone muscles, pro-

mote flexibility and improve posture.

FIT FOR LIFE - Taught by certified fitness specialist Joanne Zoladz. Exercises for balance, increased muscle

strength and improved bone health accompanied by music while seated or standing. Will strengthen heart and

get your blood pumping.

FITNESS EQUIPMENT ORIENTATION - Taught by certified trainer Keith Federman. Provides group

training on the use of Holiday Park’s fitness room weight training equipment including: treadmills and bikes.

The purpose is to keep users safe and to get the most out of an equipment workout.

FITNESS ROOM STRENGTH TRAINING CLASS - Taught by Keith Federman. Individually designed

workouts improve fitness using the weight training equipment, treadmills and bikes in HP Fitness Room.

INTERNATIONAL FOLK DANCING - Taught by Sharon Katz. International, world-wide & Israeli folk

dances. Dances use easy steps and movements. Circles, lines and partner dance (no partner required) takes

you on a journey around the world. Newcomers welcomed.

LINE DANCE with LYNNE OSBORNE - Choreographed line dancing to songs from a variety of musical

styles. Learn basic patterns and easy steps. Exercise your mind and body and meet new friends. Once you

know the basics, Lynn will suggest more advanced, ongoing classes. Classes include: BEGINNER,

ADVANCED BEGINNER, ADVANCED BEGINNER PLUS, INTERMEDIATE, INTERMEDIATE PLUS.

PILATES - Taught by Anne Contee. Whole body exercises designed to build strength while developing bal-

ance and flexibility. Some light weights are used.

STABILITY EXERCISE w/BALL - Taught by trainer/exercise specialist Matthew Rundell. Exercises

emphasize strengthening core muscles, improvement of posture, and flexibility.

SANDI’S YOGA - Taught by Sandi Rothwell. Provides gentle movement and relaxation for a range of physi-

cal abilities. Includes gentle stretching and breathing techniques and movement exercises for strength, bal-

ance, safe walking, fall prevention, flexibility and relaxation. Participants can use chair or mat.

YOGA WITH ANN CONTEE - Taught by Anne Contee. Promote better balance, improved strength and re-

laxation. GENTLE YOGA - Focuses on meditation, breathing, core strength, balance & flexibility. CHAIR YOGA -

Low impact yoga using bands to ward off osteoporosis, arthritis and weak muscles. Students focus on fall pre-

vention techniques using balancing poses. YOGA for BALANCE - An introduction to yoga asana poses with at-

tention to stability and strength improvement. Movements are slow and gentle.

YOUR BODY IS MEANT TO MOVE - Taught by Keith Federman. Exercises with balls, bands and

weights, concentrating on balance and strength. BASIC - Seated and standing movements targeting strength,

flexibility, balance and stamina. Accommodates people with varying abilities and physical limitations.

INTERMEDIATE - A more challenging workout for students who regularly exercise. Students can expect more

repetitions and progressions of strength, balance and agility exercise. ADVANCED - Faster pace work on

strength, balance and coordination using exercises that include weights and stretch bands provided by HPSI.

ZUMBA CLASSES WITH CAROLINE FERRANTE A fusion of Latin and International music and dance

themes which creates a dynamic, exciting and effective dance fitness program. ZUMBA GOLD - Challenging

dance routines to provide a comprehensive fitness program. ZUMBA TONING - Incorporates Gold workout with

light weight training. ZUMBA WAKE-UP - Slow to moderate pace dance fitness. Good for beginners.

DROP-IN BASIC ENGLISH– Taught by Roxana. Learn to communicate in English with daily living conversations.

BASIC COMPUTER DROP-IN WORKSHOP - Conducted by Jed Carmichael (JC). Drop-in for individual

help with personal computer use. No repairs!

EASY FIT DANCING - Taught by Marcia Young. An aerobic style dance class designed to improve

flexibility and balance. All routines are choreographed to upbeat music. Provides dance, fitness and fun.

TAI CHI CLASSES - Chinese exercises based on Martial Arts, encompassing slow movements, power pos-

tures, natural range of motion and movement. TAI CHI CHUAN - Taught by Fred Nee, Lenny Gross & Sherman

Wong. TAI CHI CHUAN CHAIR - Taught by Lenny Gross. TAI CHI SWORD - Taught by Howard Lee and Yann

King. TAI CHI BASICS - Taught by Lenny Gross. Enjoy the benefits of Tai Chi sitting or standing.

ARTS, LANGUAGE & SPECIAL INTEREST ACRYLIC PAINTING FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS WITH LAURA STEELE - Explore shapes,

shadows, value, & color. Material list given at registration. Some drawing experience necessary.

ACRYLIC PAINTING FOR ADVANCED BEGINNERS WITH LAURA STEELE - For those who have

taken the absolute beginning class, this class explores more advanced acrylic techniques and practices.

ART APPRECIATION ANALYSIS WITH ARTIST STEPHEN HANKS

Learn how art demands and sustains our attention. Explanation of the fundamental components of art

principles and how they are used to control our attention and enhance quality. Looking at the works of many

great artists from various schools of art, students learn to understand and critique art beyond., “I like it.”

BRIDGE CLASSES - Taught by Sunny Levin. Learn how to play bridge in an easy and professional manner.

Potential new students must sign in on the Bridge Interest List in Red Book at the Reception Desk. BASIC

BRIDGE I - Learn the basics and create the foundation for communicating with partners. BASIC BRIDGE II - Pre

-requisite Basic Bridge I. Includes: Doubles, Overcalls, Slams, Bridge game for two INTERMEDIATE I - Pre-

requisite: Basic Bridge I and II. Concentrates on partnership communication and demonstrates that every bid is

meaningful. INTERMEDIATE II - Pre-requisite, Intermediate I. Includes complete Bidding System and Popular

conventions. SUPERVISED BRIDGE - Pre-requisite, Completion of all 50 lessons. “Freebie hands” with consul-

tation as requested. PLAY OF THE HAND - Pre-requisite Intermediate II. Learning how to plan the play of a

hand and make difficult contracts.

CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING with Helene McCarthy. This is a beautiful and ancient style of art that often

depicts flowers, trees, landscapes and birds.

COMPUTER CLASSES - Taught by Jackie Morse. BASIC provides basic instructions on

using the computer, email and navigating the Internet. Good for the beginning computer user.

INTERMEDIATE expands your basic computer knowledge,

FRENCH FOR BEGINNERS - Taught by Gilles Gouin. For interested students with no or

almost no French background. Will address survival French and French culture. Minimal homework.

JEWELRY CLASS - Taught by Claire Fish. A fun workshop at which you will learn to make pipe cleaner

rings and other jewelry-making techniques.

MEDIEVAL ROMANCE FROM TRISTAN TO MALORY-Taught by Clarence Steinberg, Ph.D. A risque

romp through Medieval European romances. “Tristan and Isolde” and “Morte d’Artur” are required texts and

Goeffery of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniea is suggested reading.

MINDFULNESS FOR THE SOUL - Led by Albert Zara, Mindfulness Coach and Certified Teacher. Is life

catching up with you? Improve your health and well-being by practicing deep breathing, meditation, stretches,

mind focus and connecting to others.

OPERA APPRECIATION: ELEMENTS OF GREAT PERFORMANCES - Taught by Donato Soranno

who shows well-known performances of some of the greatest arias and opera performances, then lectures and

leads a discussion about all of the contributing elements-singing, orchestra music, stage, costumes and more.

SPANISH EXPERIENCE - Instructor Flo Orbach. An informal learning experience that explores reading,

translation study and pronunciation.

SPANISH– Taught by Linda Katz. Learn to communicate in Spanish. Spanish in10 Minutes A Day is required

for all levels. BEGINNING SPANISH PART 1 - Learn vocabulary for everyday usage and how to ask questions

and use of verbs in present tense. Offered in the Fall. BEGINNING SPANISH PART 2/3 continues and extends Part

1. ADVANCED BEGINNER SPANISH - Pre-requisite Beginning Spanish or Instructor permission. Class will em-

HPSI MEMBERSHIP - A HPSI (Holiday Park Seniors, Inc.) Membership Card allows you to receive

reduced rates for classes and programs as well as entrée to special Holiday Park events. A $20.00-a-year

HPSI SCHOLARSHIPS of $200.00 per year are available for income eligible individuals. Scholarships can

Center offers stamps, mailing supplies and an array of mailing services.

SENIORS WITH DISABILITIES - The County complies with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If

you need auxiliary aids, notification must be received no later than two (2) weeks prior to the start of the

The Monthly Nutrition Program Menu is available in the Dining Room or at the Reception Desk.

Lunch and bus reservations MUST be made at least two working days in advance. Cancellations may be

A voluntary contribution for the meal is requested from persons age 60 and over and spouse of any age.

The actual cost of the meal is $5.49. Contributions are used to purchase more meals. Please contribute as

much as possible. Persons under age 60 must pay the full amount.

The Nutrition Program prohibits saving of tables or chairs.

Participants on the waiting list may sit at a table if space is available (they will be called separately), but

only participants who have reservations should come up when their table is called.

Regular Nutrition Program participants receive an identification card to swipe when having lunch.

The number needed to treat (NNT) is an epidemiological measure used in assessing the effectiveness of a

health-care intervention, typically a treatment with medication. The NNT is the average number of patients

who need to be treated to prevent one additional bad outcome (i.e. the number of patients that need to be treat-

ed for one to benefit compared with a control in a clinical trial). The ideal NNT is 1, where everyone im-

proves with treatment and no one improves with control. The higher the NNT, the less effective is the

The HPSI Board Elections are to be held in January. Elections will take place January 22 thru Jan. 26, 9:30-2:30. HPSI members Only may vote.

JUDITH KIMEL - Judith is the present chairperson of the HPSI Board and has worked for almost 13

years as a volunteer in the Gift Shop. She has volunteered for 8 years as an ombudsman in a nursing home, and

ha volunteered throughout her life with hospitals, hospice, handicapped children’s services, adult mental health

and English as a second language. Judith currently conducts estate sales for individuals who are moving or

downsizing. In her free time she takes exercise and dance classes at Holiday Park.

BETTE WALSH - Bette presently serves as secretary on the HPSI Board. She has volunteered at the Re-

ception Desk since 2001. provides assistance with the Friday Dances and was an avid RV traveler for many

years.

DAVID SPIVOK - David has been an active participant at Holiday Park for 8 years. He has served on the

HPSI Board for the last 4 years. He is a long-term volunteer in the Café on Fridays. And has also participated

in two Holiday Park talent Shows. David lives at Leisure World.

MYRA TATE - Myra recently joined the Center after 50 years of teaching singing to both adults and young

people. She was Director of Music at a Rockville church for 13 years. She lives nearby in Kensington, makes

good use of the fitness room and exercise classes and is eager to give back to Holiday Park by serving on the

HPSI Board.

RUTH WOLPERT - Ruth worked for years, first as an office manager at one of the largest CPA firms in

DC, supervising an administrative staff of 30 people, then at a CPA firm in Bethesda, coordinating tax infor-

mation. After retirement, Ruth volunteered at the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for 9 years. She currently
