oncrete is a key solution to modernconcerns about energy efficiency, protecting the environment and using

our resources wisely with many environmen-tal advantages throughout its manufactureand use. And because old concrete can bereused, the energy savings accrue indefinite-ly, making concrete one of the oldest andmost environmentally-friendly constructionmaterials currently available.

Natural and Recycled Materials

Some building materials rely on scarce ornonrenewable resources. In contrast, concrete is made from three commonlyavailable ingredients

n Watern Aggregate (stone, sand, and gravel)n Portland cement (a fine gray powder)

A growing list of recycled materials cancomplement these basic ingredients.Aggregates may contain safe industrial by-products, such as steelmaking’s slag.Portland cement can be supplemented bymaterials such as fly ash, a discard of coalburning power plants. Even cement’s manu-facturing process uses recycled materials.Each year, a single cement kiln can safelyburn one million old tires, conserving fossilfuels and reducing landfill.

Stronger, Lasts Longer

Since precast concrete is strong, virtuallyimpermeable, and resists fire, water, andweather, it has a longer service life than otherconstruction materials. Concrete’s durabilityreduces maintenance and reconstruction, conserving resources. Use of CarbonCast®

with C-GRID® carbon fiber grid reinforcing in double tees increases the longevity of a deckor parking structure even more, especially inareas where salt can exacerbate corrosion.And at the end of its service life, crushed con-crete can be reused as aggregate for pipes,foundation and road beds (more on page 13).

Color in Concrete

Color is achieved through a combinationof white or gray cement, coloringagents, or pigments, and fine or coarseaggregates added to the mix. High isexpert in matching color to existingbuildings. Matching caulk colors, stains,and paint are also available.

Mix Designs for Beauty and Strength

Environmentally friendly “green”mixdesign, including High’s innovativeEcoMixTM— concrete reinforced withpozollans made from waste products—can improve initial appearance and long-term performance by reducing shrinkageand temperature-induced cracking. Mixes that incorporate these recycledmaterials can improve concrete’s propertiesincluding resistance to moisture andimpact, load-carrying capacity, and evencomponent size.

To Seal or Not To Seal

Breathable sealers are used to keep afinish clean and reduce rain or dew-induced shadowing by resisting or preventing liquid moisture penetration.While sealers are not required to“waterproof” high-strength precastconcrete, they n Prevent streaking caused by runoff

from glazing systemsn Resist surface mold growth

Sealers can also guard against corrosionin steel mesh-reinforced double teesand other components exposed to chlo-rides. Sealers can be integral to the con-crete mix or surface-applied. The two

basic kinds of surface-applied sealersare penetrating sealers and face-fillingfilm sealers. Face filling film sealers prevent moisture absorption but needto be reapplied at regular intervals.Some sealers may affect color or finishappearance; integral sealers affect mixdesign.

Color-Matched Caulks Protect Against Moisture

A wide array of color matched siliconeor polyurethane joint sealants—alsoknown as caulks—are available. Siliconesealers usually have the highest initialcost, but are resistant to ultraviolet rays,and break down more slowly thanpolyurethane sealants. Polyurethanesealants bond well to concrete, alu-minum, etc. and have additives toimprove their resistance to breakdownscaused by ultraviolet rays. Both types ofsealants can be obtained with 5- and10-year warranties

Two-part polyurethane or silicone for-mulated for adhesion to concrete is recommended, along with an appropriateprimer.

Aggregates

Many color and texture options are possible by varying aggregate type andcolor, size, finishing process, and depth ofexposure. Combining color and textureaccentuates the natural beauty of aggregates.

Aggregate colors range from white topastel to red, black, and green.

Finishes

Precast concrete is cast in forms made ofwood, steel, concrete, or rubber. Asmooth form finish highlights the naturalmottled look of concrete as well as anyimperfections in the form. As a result, it’susually desirable to use an applied finishto achieve a more uniform appearanceand to bring out the full color, texture, andnatural beauty of the aggregates. Veneers

Brick and stone veneers set in precastachieve the look of hand-laid masonry or stone cladding with greater constructionefficiency, safety, and water tightness.Veneers includen Thin brickn Half brickn Standard brickn Oversized brickn Honed or polished concrete blockn Tile (ceramic and terra cotta)n Stone (granite, limestone, and marble)

Limestone, marble, and granite veneers(e.g., 11⁄2"– 2" thick) can be drilled, fittedwith stainless steel pins, and cast into rigidprecast backers to provide large, full- orpartially-veneered panels. Stone-veneeredprecast panels can be an efficient way toclad high-rise buildings. For economy, natural stone veneers are often used onlower levels of buildings with matching custom-mixed all-precast panels on theupper levels.

These veneers also eliminate the fireproof-ing required to protect steel-framed curtainwall assemblies. To ensure best quality, and to speed installation, sealingbetween stone joints can be done in the

factory, leaving only the sealing betweenpanels to be completed in the field.

Form-Lined Shapes

Using plaster, rubber, grained wood, ropeor other material as a liner in the castingform can offer finishes, reliefs, textures,shapes, and patterns limited only by yourimagination.

Finishing Stadium StructuralComponents

All components are finished to PCICommercial Grade standards. Pigments,aggregates, and textures can all be usedto achieve a dramatic appearance on wallsand cladding (see page14). Structural components in fully enclosed spaces typi-cally receive a finely textured trowel finish.A light broom finish is used on surfaces subject to foot traffic.

Thin brick is highly imperviouscompared to full or half-bricksdue to its molding process andbecause an impervious precastpanel backer replaces traditionalpervious “mortar” joints. Waterwill not get behind a thin brick-veneered precast panel andcause bricks to pop off. Thinbricks are modular and coursedimensions are fixed, so designsshould take this into account toavoid excessive cutting toachieve the desired look.

Cast-in thin brick replicates the look of full-depth brick but is more impervious and economical than full-depth depth brick veneers.
