SPRINKLER HEADS HI-FOG® sprinklers are typically used in systems where the thermal activation of the sprinkler activates the discharge. The heat-sensitive glass bulb bursts at the given temperature (five standard options ranging from 57 to 141°C), and this releases the spool valve, which allows the high-pressure water to flow through the micro-nozzles. HI-FOG® sprinklers consist of the sprinkler body, spool valve, micro-nozzles and a heat-sensitive glass bulb. Each sprinkler is equipped with a 300 µm strainer to protect against clogging. Most HI-FOG® sprinklers are made of brass and plated with chrome or nickel. Other finishes, such as gold, are also available.

SPRAY HEADS Spray heads are the most visible part of the HI-FOG® system, meaning they have to be both immaculate in concept as well as appearance. Each and every HI-FOG® spray head consists of a body, micro-nozzles and a 300 µm strainer, which is designed to prevent clogging. Furthermore, every HI-FOG® spray head is fashioned from stainless steel. A variety of spray heads are available to meet a vast range of fire protection requirements, including special requirements such as tamper-

proof installations, which are commonplace and necessary in persons, and floor mounting heads for usage in airport hangars. The head of every sprinkler is always open and there are no fixed glass bulbs at all. They are normally used in units where a discharge is manually or automatically activated through an independent fire detection system.

TUBING Every tube used in the high-pressure parts of a HI-FOG® system is made from AISI 316L stainless steel, with the high-pressure fittings needed to complete the tubing network and mount the sprinkler or spray heads also supplied by Marioff. HI-FOG® tubes are very small compared to traditional sprinkler system pipes, enabling discrete installation in tight spaces – a particular benefit for both heritage sites and retrofits. Furthermore, the installation is fast, as the tubes can be bent, and complicated mechanical fittings such as knees are not needed. All tubes and fittings are rated for high pressure.

VALVES A HI-FOG® system can contain a number of different types of valves, with each one playing a different functional role within the system. All HI-FOG® valve types are engineered and manufactured by Marioff to ensure high performance.

Sprinkler Section Valves

Section valves are used to divide a HI-FOG® sprinkler system into sections and are normally open and monitored. When there is water flow through the valve, it indicates a sprinkler has been activated and the HI-FOG® system is automatically activated. The section valve can also be used to manually close the water supply in case of section maintenance. For routine maintenance testing, section valves are equipped with a test connection to simulate sprinkler activation. Section valves are available in several sizes and can be fitted with various types of flow indications and other.

Machinery Space Valves

Machinery space valves are mainly used in HI-FOG® systems which contain open spray heads. The valves are normally closed, so that when a fire alarm is received from a specific section the dedicated valve for that section can open to allow discharge. The valve can be opened automatically or manually through remote or local control.

Release and Control Valves

A wide range of release and control valves are available for the activation of gas-driven systems. Release valves open the gas source for single or multiple discharges, while the gas cylinders can be released either through one common manifold release valve or individual release valves. The release method can be electric, pneumatic, hydraulic or manual.

Other Valves

Marioff also provides other valves, such as non-return valves, ball valves and stabilization valves, as part of a system installation. The majority of these valves are also designed and manufactured by Marioff.

PUMP UNITS HI-FOG® pump units are a key part of system performance, as they must deliver consistently and reliably. The pump unit type and size is selected according to the hazard type and areas that need to be covered. Marioff offers six basic types of HI-FOG® pump units, each with a variety of configurations: • HI-FOG® Electric Pump Unit (EPU) • HI-FOG® Sprinkler Pump Unit (SPU) • HI-FOG® Modular Sprinkler Pump Unit (MSPU) • HI-FOG® Machinery Local Application Pump Unit (MLPU) • HI-FOG® Diesel Pump Unit (DPU) • HI-FOG® Gas Pump Unit (GPU)

HI-FOG® Electric Pump Unit (EPU)

The HI-FOG® Electric Pump unit consists of a mechanical pump skid and a separate control cabinet. Its unique modular structure enables flexible installation and optimized use of footprint. The advanced control system ensures that the pump unit provides only the required pressure and flow. Pressure optimization is achieved with the software control and a frequency converter. Excess water unloading is not needed, which simplifies the mechanical design. The EPU’s user-friendly interface provides real-time status of the pump unit and the HI-FOG® system, alarm and help information, maintenance reminders and event history ensuring optimized maintenance activities.

HI-FOG® Sprinkler Pump Unit (SPU)

The HI-FOG® SPU is an electric pump unit suitable for many different applications. HI-FOG® SPUs can be custom built in a range of different sizes and configurations, and each unit can be designed to connect to both main and emergency power supplies. HI-FOG® SPUs can provide continuous operation using water tanks or an external water supply for extended protection. The pump units are self-supported and equipped with a break water tank and an electric control cabinet, with an optional water separator also available. For redundancy, an additional electric motor can be provided.

HI-FOG® Modular Sprinkler Pump Unit (MSPU)

The HI-FOG® MSPU is a modular version of the HI-FOG® SPU, which is typically used when the installation space has limited access. The HI-FOG® MSPU can be carried through tight spaces in parts and then assembled at the final location.

HI-FOG® Machinery Local Application Pump Unit (MLPU)

The HI-FOG® MLPU is an electric pump unit mainly intended for local protection applications. It consists of one electric motor, which drives a piston pump and a control cabinet.

HI-FOG® Diesel Driven Pump Unit (DPU)

The HI-FOG® DPU is a diesel-driven alternative to the HI-FOG® SPU. If electric power is not available, the HI-FOG® DPU is provided as an alternative. The units are compact and self-contained, and can be customised as needed as they require no electrical connections. However, they can be connected to external control and alarm systems if necessary.

HI-FOG® Gas Pump Unit (GPU)

The HI-FOG® GPU is a self-contained pump unit that does not need an external power source for operation, and is mainly used in low hazard areas and machinery spaces. In some applications, the gas is fed into the system with the water supply, which enhances the atomising of the water droplets. The HI-FOG® GPU consists of a gas-driven mechanical piston-type pump, which can use an external water system, a water tank or water cylinders. The gas can be either pressurized air or nitrogen, depending on the application and preference, while the unit size (number of cylinders) depends on the size of the protected space and the required protection time.

ACCUMULATOR UNITS

HI-FOG® accumulator units are used in smaller spaces or as redundancy for other HI-FOG® systems. They use compressed air or nitrogen that is released through water cylinders, discharging the water through HI-FOG® spray heads into the protected spaces. Marioff offers three basic types of HI-FOG® accumulator units: • HI-FOG® Machinery Space Accumulator Unit (MAU) • HI-FOG® Kitchen Accumulator Unit (KAU) • HI-FOG® Double-cylinder Accumulator Unit (DAU)

Page 10: HI-FOG System Components - Datacentrehardware...HI-FOG ® pump units are a key part of system performance, as they must deliver consistently and reliably. The pump unit type and size

HI-FOG® Machinery Space Accumulator Unit (MAU)

The HI-FOG® MAU is used in conjunction with small machinery space applications, gas turbine enclosures and similar spaces. The units are modular and self-contained with no moving parts, meaning they can be either wall mounted or skid mounted. The units consist of a number of water cylinders, one or more pressurised nitrogen or air cylinders, and a release valve. The unit size varies depending on the application-specific requirements.

HI-FOG® Kitchen Accumulator Unit (KAU)

The HI-FOG® KAU is similar to the HI-FOG® MAU, but is specially optimized for kitchen applications such as deep fat fryers.

HI-FOG® Double-cylinder Accumulator Unit (DAU)

The HI-FOG® DAU works on the same principle as the HI-FOG® MAU unit. However, the discharge is qualified as 'dry' mist because it has a lower water volume, making the HI-FOG® DAU ideal for sub-floor spaces with high voltage or electronic equipment. WATER SUPPLY HI-FOG® is very flexible in terms of water supply due to the fact it uses such small amounts of water. The water supply for an electrical, gas-driven or diesel driven pump unit utilizes either a mains feed or a water tank that can be dedicated to the HI-FOG® system or shared with other systems. Typically, a feed pump is used to add pressure to the inlet water flow, which provides the required pressure for the filter unit on the pump unit.

The water supply for HI-FOG® accumulator systems consists of water cylinders that are pre-filled with potable water.

HOSE REELS HI-FOG® hose reels for manual firefighting are available as an integral part of the system.
