Page 3: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

We often get asked why a school should complete the HSP. We all know that schools are very busy and have many competing priorities within the school day and don’t need anything else added to their plate.

We believe that the HSP is a stimulus:1) To assess how the school environment supports health: The HSP can help schools get a sense of where their school environment is currently, so that when they set goals and take action to make improvements, they can come back to the HSP and reassess to gauge improvements and determine where to focus next.2) The HSP is also an opportunity to bring together a team with a variety of perspectives:Bringing a team together provides an opportunity to discuss responses to the questions. We’ve heard from many schools that these are very valuable conversations – it’s eye‐opening to hear different perspectives.3) The HSP can also help school set goals: Schools receive a tailored report that includes their results in the form of a rubric as well as detailed recommendations for improving (or maintaining if they are at the top level) their school environment.4) Finally, the HSP guides schools in building a plan for improvement: Once schools have their results, we encourage them to take the opportunity to discuss the results with members of their team and others in the schools community. From there, they can decide where to take action. An action planning template is included in the report or schools can incorporate their goals and actions into an existing school planning process.

Page 4: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

The HSP can also offer valuable information to school districts and health authorities. School districts and health authorities now have the opportunity to request aggregate reports for their local jurisdiction. These reports provide a sense of where schools they partner with are currently in terms of creating healthier school environments so that they can determine what areas schools need the most support.

There is an application form on the HSP website for districts and health authorities that are interested in requesting an aggregate reports for their local jurisdiction. Application forms must be signed by a school district representative.

Since a pillar of CSH is partnerships, we encourage whoever requests the aggregate report to share it with either the school district or health unit to work together.

Page 5: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

The HSP has been built around current evidence related to comprehensive school health. We have had to find balance when developing the assessments between what the evidences says will work and recognizing that each school context is different.

Example: Evidence shows schools with a CSH team have healthier environments, but we also know that what works in one school may not work in another. To balance this, schools need to determine who is part of the team and how it works based on local relationships, interest, and skills.

Page 6: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

We wanted to ensure that the HSP was valid and reliable, but also recognized that in order for schools to want to complete it, it had to be useable.

6

Page 7: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

We worked closely with educators at every step while developing the revised HSP. It was important that we received input from across the country so that the HSP would be useful in as many settings as possible.

7

Page 8: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

The HSP is built around the Comprehensive School Health framework. Each module addresses the four pillars: social and physical environment, teaching and learning, healthy school policy and partnerships and services. The pillars are not separate entities but must be addressed together.

8

Page 9: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

Comprehensive school health consists of four pillars that have been drawn from a breadth of experience in schools around the world. World Health Organization has identified key areas that result in successful efforts to create healthy school environments.While these key areas or pillars sometimes get sliced and diced in different ways, there is consistency in the underlying principles. So, while most Canadian provinces and territories describe the four pillars as physical and social environment, teaching and learning, healthy school policy and partnerships and services, at least two provinces have slight variations. It all means the same thing.

On the other hand, if CSH was as simple as addressing four pillars, schools would be more successful at it.  Science also points to factors critical in HOW we work at CSH. The Apple a day figure in this slide captures these “How to’s”: having a committed champion and leadership team,  using a whole school approach, looking for synergy between health and education, employing planning, assessment and continuous learning principles, and being in it for the long haul with sustained effort and sustainability planning.

We have developed the Foundational Module to help schools consider these “how to’s”.

Next we thought we would go through some of the features that make the HSP unique and easy for schools to use.

Registering for the HSP is simple. Schools are able to select their province, district and school name from a drop‐down list. We try to keep the list as up to date as possible, but if their school name does not appear in the list there is also an option for the school to add their name to the list.

We also ask for basic contact information and have the person registering create their own password. In addition, we ask for the primary language used at the school and the grades taught at the school, which allows us to filter questions depending on the grades.

10

Page 11: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

As mentioned previously, the Foundational module of the HSP helps schools to assess HOW they are going to implement CSH. Completing this module helps schools understand key processes for making CSH work in their school.

This is why schools start with the Foundational Module

11

Page 12: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

The Foundational module must be completed first so that schools have a better understanding of the processes needed to support a healthy school community. After that, schools can choose a topic area that they are interested in. The HSP offers both express and detailed modules. The four express modules assess “core” indicators of a healthy school community related to the topic area selected. If schools are interested in digging deeper into a topic area once they have completed the express module, they can complete the detailed module.

12

Page 13: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

Upon completion of a module, each school receives tailored results in the form of a rubric. In addition to their results, they also receive evidence‐based recommendations for moving forward.

We also would encourage schools to complete the HSP at regular intervals (e.g., one per year) to guide their progress.

13

Page 14: Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar. I’m Dana ...healthyschoolplanner.uwaterloo.ca/_global/documents/HSP_Webinar... · Hi everyone. Thanks for joining today’s webinar.

There are numerous support tools for schools looking to complete the HSP. The HSP Planner Guide walks schools through the steps needed to understand the current health of the school community and how to make plans for improvements.The glossary provides definitions for words commonly used throughout the HSP andThere is an explanation of the rubric levels (e.g., what does being a level 1 mean?)

There are also resources that will be helpful to the school once they have completed an assessment:The Resource list is tailored for each province / territory or national resourcesThe Action Planning Template provides schools with an opportunity to record their goals and actions for making improvements. This template is also included in the report that the school receives after completing a module.

Despite trying to make the language as simple as possible, we recognized that there are some words that may need additional information for clarity. We added in hover definitions so that schools are clear on the meaning of the question, without having to go back to the glossary.
