Connected Breath

Just writing to let you know about a new project based around group

meditation called Connected Breath by Marc B. ACE introduction to

developing a practice. Try it at: http://www.connectedbreath.co

Reason why Marc built Connected Breath

He loves the feeling of group meditation: people intentionally slowing down

to breathe together and wanted to make that feeling accessible at any given

moment throughout the day.

Connected Breath has two unique aspects that have not seen in any other

meditation app:

1. Synchronize your breath with all users. When you start your

meditation session, your breathing cues will be synchronized with

everyone else currently meditating.

2. Daily group meditation offerings. Every day at 8:55pm, you will be

invited to participate in a large group meditation with potentially

hundreds of people in your time zone. It starts at 9pm.

My patients who experience severe and enduring mental health problems

really like this practice, very grounding (Lisa)

Thought Provokeing paper

by Jamie Bristow

A GREAT READ please share

As you may be aware, over recent months there have been some high-profile

articles criticising mindfulness training, mainly as a result of the publication of

McMindfulness by Ron Purser. This has inspired Jamie to write the piece

below, which has just been published by Open Democracy. If you have a

chance to read it, I hope you'll agree that it is bringing something new to the

debate.

Time for new thinking about mindfulness and social change - Jamie Bristow

Why paint inner development as a barrier to better systems? Amid so much

crisis and complexity, surely we need both.

As the original critique was so widely read, if you like my response then

sharing it would be very helpful. Here is my tweet:

@Jamiebristow Inner work alone won't bring collective evolution, but we can't

build better systems without developing hearts and minds.

Westminster Hour: The UK parliamentary mindfulness teaching programme

was featured on Sunday's BBC Radio 4 Westminster Hour. Over the last six

years, 240 parliamentarians and 450 staff have benefitted from the weekly

mindfulness classes, led by Chris Cullen from the Oxford Mindfulness Centre.

The class brings together politicians from across political divides, with MPs

from five different political parties practising collectively. Mindfulness

seven participants said their anger had reduced, and they were better able to

intervention had little impact. The article is published in Mindfulness, and is

Mindfulness in Politics and

Public Policy

Jamie Bristow explores the growing role of mindfulness in public life, including

national politicians taking part in mindfulness training (such as the 8-week

courses provided by the OMC in the UK Parliament). He examines the

increasing recognition among politicians and policy makers that mindfulness is

more than a targeted intervention for specific issues and that it could

contribute to the flourishing of society more broadly. LINK

May didn’t explicitly agree to a meeting, she welcomed the report and

congratulated the APPG, demonstrating awareness of Mindfulness-Based

RETREAT REVIEW by Jane Anderson (Lancashire Mindfulness trainee 2018, UK

Network registered teacher): I’m just back from a retreat that was held at

Ackworth School in Pontefract. The theme was the Four Foundations of

Mindfulness, looking at the Buddhist underpinnings to the 8 week course. It

was run by Alison Evans and Jake Dartington.

It was very good indeed, referencing where the principles link to the 8 week

course with specific references to MBCT and helped to deepen understanding

around the focus for each of the 8 sessions. I don’t know if it’s an annual

retreat but wanted to share the detail with you because it is aimed at relatively

new teachers and I think would be a great first retreat for your students.

Reasonably priced too. I’m guessing it will also align well too with Willem

Kuyken and Christina Feldmans book. My copy has arrived so looking forward

to reading it.

A new study conducted at the Universities of Exeter and Oxford suggests that

mindfulness self-compassion practices improve mood and feelings of

connection. They also uniquely reduced arousal and increased parasympathetic

activation compared to the control conditions. This suggests that self-

compassion may play an important and very particular role in emotion

regulation. Further details of the study can be found on the University of

Exeter website.
