so what?
editor’s page
Show me your tree with the
ornaments you’d never throw away. email a picture to hgtvmagazine@
hearst.com.
I edit for a living, but I’ll never edit down my ornament collection. Not gonna happen. That’s
because my felt gingerbread men, needlepoint Santas, and rhinestone
reindeers have good stories attached to them. Don’t yours?
The oldesT of The pack
When I was a kid, my sisters and I got presents every Christmas from
not one but two snowy, faraway places. Some came from the North Pole
(Santa, of course), and others arrived in the mail from Sweden, where
distant relatives would make traditional ornaments (like these!)
to send us. The fragile crafts were not as fun to open
as, say, an Easy-Bake Oven, but they stuck around longer.
Swaddled in paper towels 11 months of the year, they’ve stayed intact for
decades. Now, I can’t imagine decorating my tree without them.
The ones ThaT pull off a Theme Isn’t everything more fun with a theme—Christmas trees included? Here’s a great
setup to try: a big traditional tree in your living room and a totally themed-out
tabletop tree somewhere else in the house. One year I did a mini cookies-and-
candy tree that was supersweet (though, I gotta say, David Bromstad’s
version on page 104 really takes the cake. Ha!). My tree done entirely in
Santa Claus ornaments had a pretty good run. But I outdid myself the
year I completely covered a white artificial tree with colorful paper
butterflies. Butterflies in December! Told you: Themes are fun.
someThIng sparkly and new I say buy ornaments year-round—like when you’re on vacation
and something glittery catches your eye in the gift shop.
Host an ornament swap party. And make new ones with your
youngest family members. This year, I’m DIYing these sequin monogram
cuties with my niece and nephew. I’ll tell them, “Come on, kids—start filling
your shoe boxes with ornaments, and don’t ever stop. Ten, 20 years from
now, you’ll be glad to have a meaningful collection.”
Merry everything,
i’m an
ornament
hoarder.

I bought my first issue this
week. It’s beautiful, and so much
fun seeing the stars from my favorite
shows. I’d love to see an article with
the hosts of Love It or List It.
—Elaine Cefola,
Oceanside, CA
Editors’ reply: Good news! Turn
to page 116 for real estate and
remodeling tips from Hilary Farr
and David Visentin.
“Yay!” was my response when I
saw your article on composting
in the October issue (“Compost Doesn’t
Have to Be Scary or Smelly!”) because
I had just started my own compost
pile. I can’t believe how much useful
information I gleaned from those
two pages. Now I have a successful
composting formula.
—Stefania Ackerman,
Lovington, NM
I’ve always loved your
Front Door of the
Month page (“Come
On In!”), but the October
edition made me squeal
with joy. The pop-out
door was genius. I hope
to find many more
adorable surprises behind
the beautiful doors in the
months to come.
—Janine Prater,
Eureka, CA
In October’s “the Most
Embarrassing Kitchen in America!”
Tifany and Jef did a phenomenal job
transforming a dingy kitchen into a
vibrant, functional work space. Thanks
for the amazing inspiration.
—Susie Stern,
Missouri City, TX
My 8-year-old granddaughter,
Elizabeth, loves your magazine
so much that she marks all the ideas
she wants to use in her room with an
E. Just want to thank you for making
her eyes light up.
—Teresa Maki,
Alma, MO
I usually prefer blue
walls, but I was smitten
with the purple bedroom
in October’s “Wow! What
Color Is That?” I tried the
color, Purple Passage by
Sherwin-Williams, on an accent
wall in my living room and love it.
—Susie Hart,
Pasadena, CA
I just
finished
reading the
October
issue and
thought it
was great—
especially
Dave and
Michelle
Kohanzo’s
house tour
(“Mom Decorated, Kid Approved”). The
cute pink kitchen is exactly my style.
—Tara Rodriguez,
Pueblo, CO
I’m having a new home constructed,
so I’m planning to show my builder “The
Do-It-All Addition” in your October issue.
I want that whole screened-in porch!

My mom has wanted
a banquette for years.
When we saw the one
on your May cover,
we said, “We can do
that!” My husband built
the benches, my mom
made the cushions,
and my sister found
the table and chairs at a
yard sale for $40! We all
think it looks gorgeous.
—Roxanne Walker,
Tuscumbia, AL
When I saw the graphic pegboard
art in September’s “Decorating
via Email,” I knew I had to try it.
Mine was so easy and fun to make
with paint samples and paints from
past projects that I had at home. I used a yardstick to mark the rays,
trying to keep them about the same size, and taped of a few at a time.
When the board was dry, I added a topcoat of clear semigloss paint.

1. A. True. Doing this leaves
behind a light coat of dust,
which makes the surface
easier to erase in the future.
2. A2, B3, C1 Count as correct
only if you match them all.
Use an ultra-fine tip
for detailed designs or
drawing. A brush tip is
soft and flexible, so you
can draw a variety of
widths. A chisel tip is
good for both broad and
thin lines.
3. D. A pouncer. Its flat,
round sponge tip makes
it easy to evenly dab on
paint—especially handy
when filling in a stencil.
4. C. Rickrack. Unlike
smooth-edged ribbon,
rickrack has a zigzag
shape and is categorized
as trim. It’s usually used on
clothing or drapery.
5. B. Washi tape. Washi
translates to “Japanese
paper.” The tape is typically
made from tree bark native
to Japan.
6. A3, B4, C1, D2 Count as
correct only if you match
them all. A type of washable
acrylic, pufy paint forms
dimensional lines. Because
enamel creates a hard,
glossy surface, it’s best for
glass, metal, and ceramics.
Regular acrylic works
well for signs, art, and
general crafts since it
dries quickly and is easy
to clean. Tempera paint is
thinner than acrylic and
can be watered down for
finger painting.
7. D. Apply repositionable
spray adhesive to the
stencil’s back.
This spray
temporarily
adheres
materials, then
lets you peel
them up without
leaving a residue,
which makes it
perfect for sticking
a stencil to fabric,
wood, and other
surfaces.
8. B. Chenille.
In fact, pipe
cleaners are also
called “chenille stems.” The
chenille is usually made of
polyester or nylon.
9. C. Making sharp creases
in paper. This tool is called
a bone folder, and it’s often
used to score a line on
paper, making it easier to
get a crisp crease.
10. B. Cyanotype. Also
known as a sun print or
blueprint, a cyanotype
(sigh-AN-uh-type) is made
by placing leaves, feathers,
keys, or other objects on
fabric or paper that’s been
treated with chemicals,
making it light-sensitive.
11. A4, B1, C3, D2 Count as
correct only if you match
them all. A paper punch lets
you turn crafts paper into
everything from scalloped
tags to confetti-size
butterflies. A corner rounder
creates curved corners on
card stock—good for note
cards or tags. Pinking shears
are scissors with a sawtooth
edge, which helps prevent
fabric from fraying. A crafts
knife has a blade that can
cleanly slice through paper,
wood, or cloth. It’s great
whether you’re cutting out
unusual shapes or working
along straight lines.
12. A. Hold
the can 10–12
inches away,
spraying multiple
light coats. This ensures
that you get even coverage
and prevents the paint from
becoming too thick, which
could lead to dripping.
13. A4, B1, C2, D3 Count as
correct only if you match
them all. Hot glue heats up
in about a minute and is
especially handy for afxing
items to wood or hard
plastic. Fabric glue dries clear
and fast, and it’s flexible,
making it ideal for use on
material. Glue spots are
double-sided adhesives used
to attach embellishments or
photos to paper. Wood glue
is made to bond to wooden
surfaces. It dries slowly but
holds for a long time.
14. D. A skein. Likely from
the Latin word scamniare—
to wind yarn—skein is the
ofcial word to describe
yarn that’s been wound in
an oblong coil. Depending
on the type of yarn, a skein
can contain anywhere from
a few dozen yards of yarn
to a few hundred.
15. C. Microfine and chunky.
Glitter is usually categorized
by the size of the individual
flecks. Microfine glitter
has very small flecks that
feel and look like powder.
Chunky glitter has very
large flecks.

Stains are obvious, so pick a white sofa with a
washable cotton slipcover. Tip: “Machine-wash
slipcovers with a splash of bleach and put them back
on the sofa while slightly damp to reduce wrinkles,”
says Home by Novogratz’s Cortney Novogratz.
Nothing looks crisper or cleaner, and, of course,
a white sofa goes with anything you already
have. It’s that piece of furniture you can hold
onto forever—to update it, just swap out the
pillows and you have a whole new look.

peonies
It can take several years for
peonies to begin producing
flowers, and like most
perennials, they have a
short-lived bloom, lasting
only a couple of weeks, from
late May through early June.
They’re also ant magnets,
so before you bring peonies
inside, be sure to brush them
of thoroughly.
They’re lush, gorgeous, and
available in lots of varieties
and colors—most commonly
pinks, yellows, whites, and
reds. They come back year
after year and are surprisingly
low-maintenance, says Vern
Yip of Live in Vern’s House.
“They like sun, and not too
much water.” And they need
fertilizing just once a year.
Copper won’t stay gleaming without
proper care: no dishwashing, just hand-
washing. To get rid of stubborn gunk,
rub the spot with a lemon half sprinkled
with coarse salt. Avoid using cooking
sprays, which leave a residue.
Copper pots deliver more than just high style.
“Copper ofers excellent heat conduction,
which translates to even cooking,” says
Sabrina Soto, host of The High Low Project.
It’s also less prone to scorching and scalding
than stainless cookware is.

chrome faucets
Chrome shows water
spots and fingerprints
more than, say, satin
nickel, and it’s more
scratch-prone. “Most
abrasive cleansers are too
harsh. A soft cloth is best,”
says Vern Yip. Also, look
for a faucet with a PVD
coating, or physical vapor
deposition, a strong,
scratch-resistant finish.
This faucet style’s surface
is shiny and clean, adding
a modern edge to a
kitchen or bath. It’s also
a practical pick, since
chrome is one of the most
afordable types of metal.
These electric models lie flush with
countertops, so they make a kitchen look
sleek. The glass-ceramic surface is easy to
wipe down with a cooktop cleanser since
there are no burners to remove.
Smooth surface cooktops take longer to
heat up and cool down than gas versions,
which may be an issue for families with
small kids. Some cooks also find the
temperature harder to control.
smooth-surface electric cooktops
These glossy, upscale-looking
pieces help a room feel modern.
“Lacquered furniture is also easy
to wipe clean—all you need is a
dry, soft cloth,” says Sabrina Soto.
You can find lacquered pieces in
every color under the sun.
Lacquer is prone to chipping and
scratching, so these pieces work best
in lesser used areas (think foyer, not
family room). Shiny pieces also
show dust more than regular wood
or metal ones do, so dust often.

Glass tiles are a great
way to add color to
your kitchen or bath,
and because they’re
reflective, they beam
light around a space,
brightening it up. They’re
also nonporous, so they
won’t absorb moisture—
meaning there’s no risk
of mildew or staining.
velvet upholstery
Dust and pet hair cling to it, and because it
shows wear, it’s best saved for pieces you
don’t use much. Or try “performance velvet,”
says Meg Caswell, Season 6 Design Star
winner. The polyester or poly-blend fabric
“feels like velvet but resists stains better.”
The rich look and ultra-soft feel make
velvet furniture dressy but also inviting.
It comes in a big range of saturated
shades, and the plush texture makes
velvet a fun contrast to cool metal and
rustic wood pieces.
Grass cloth is tough to install because it’s heavier
and more delicate than regular wallpaper, and it’s
hard to spot-clean. For a similar look that’s easier
to put up and care for, consider faux grass cloth
wallpaper that’s made of vinyl and prepasted.
Made from natural fibers adhered to a paper
backing, grass cloth adds a warm and cozy
texture to walls. Its variegated surface also
hides nail holes from hanging art.

easily, and it streaks.
You’ll likely need a pro to
install it, to get the thin-

flat paint
Traditionally, flat
finishes have been less
durable than others—
scrubbing can remove
the paint or leave a
shiny patch in the spot
you cleaned. With high-
quality matte paint, this
is less of an issue, but
it’s still safest to save
this finish for lower-use
areas and ceilings.
It gives walls and ceilings
saturated color and
a velvety look, and it
hides imperfections. “A
flat finish absorbs light,
which can camouflage
surface diferences,“ says
David Bromstad.
Brick is a more elegant choice than
concrete and, often, less pricey than
natural stone pavers like slate or
bluestone. When it’s installed by a pro,
a brick pathway should last decades.
If the pathway isn’t done correctly,
it can look uneven. Also, bricks can
break and let weeds sneak through.
“Interlocking concrete pavers look just
as nice but are easier to install,” says
Cousins Undercover’s Anthony Carrino.

Pedestal sinks have a polished,
streamlined look—and because they
don’t take up much space, they’re a
favorite for smaller bathrooms. Many
pedestal sinks also cost less than a
drop-in sink plus a vanity.
They ofer no built-in storage and little
in the way of surface area, so you’ll need
adjacent cabinets and counter room.
“Look for a pedestal sink with a generous

super bad!bottom line:
not bad at all!bottom line:
…to regift a present?A: Good news for your holiday budget: You can pass along
your castof, as long as you’re giving the item to someone who’d
truly enjoy it, says Dawn bryan, an etiquette coach and author of
Elite Etiquette. “if the gift is right up the recipient’s alley, and she
feels as if it was specifically chosen for her, there’s nothing wrong
with passing it along.” Just never let her know she’s receiving
your reject. Rewrap it in a fresh box, write out a thoughtful card,
and toss the old incriminating one, of course. to completely
cover your tracks, give the recycled gift to someone who doesn’t
know the original giver. imagine how embarrassed you’d be if the
two bumped into each other and figured out what you did!
…to leave holiday lights on all night?
bottom line:
really bad!
…to keep hitting snooze every morning?A: instead of hitting snooze
to get an extra 10 or 20 minutes
of shut-eye, set your alarm for
that much later so you can sleep
uninterrupted. even if you fall
back asleep each time you doze,
it’s a light sleep, which won’t
help you feel refreshed as the
day goes on, says Christopher
Drake, Ph.D., national Sleep
Foundation chairman. Another
smart option: Hit the sheets
earlier. “most people need at
least seven hours of sleep—if
you aren't getting that, you
should change your schedule,”
says Drake. Sleep deprivation
increases the risk of health
problems like weight gain and
diabetes, so stick to a bedtime
and lay of the snooze button.
A: Yes, they’re festive, but
keeping your holiday lights on
24 /7, either indoors or out, can
do a number on your electric
bill. each 100-bulb strand of
mini lights uses about the same
amount of energy as a 40-watt
incandescent bulb—which
means leaving 10 strands of
lights flickering all night is like
keeping on 10 lamps. “You’re
not only upping your energy
bill, but you’re also putting
your safety at risk,” says brett
brenner, president of the
electrical Safety Foundation
international. the more lights
you leave on, the greater
the chance of one breaking
or burning out. “if that bulb
gets too close to anything
combustible, like a dry tree, it
could start a fire.” to minimize

how bad is it…
pretty bad!
…to flush a dead goldfish down the toilet?A: When it’s time to send
Goldie to the big fishbowl in
the sky, avoid the bathroom
funeral. “Goldfish can easily get
caught in a toilet’s pipes, which
are only about two inches in
diameter,” says Paul Abrams,
spokesperson for Roto-Rooter.
And because fish are bony,
yours could get really lodged
in there, making it tricky to,
um, fish her out without the
help of a plumber. Also, even if
the fish does pass through the
pipes, she’ll end up in a waste
treatment plant, not the ocean
like Nemo. So if that gives
you pause, perform a proper
backyard burial.
bottom liNe:
it's fine!
…to use the same toothbrush after you’ve been sick?A: brush with ease. As long as
you’re otherwise healthy—you
aren’t dealing with a serious
disease or going through
chemotherapy—there's no
need to ditch your toothbrush
post-cold. Although bacteria
can breed on the brush, it’s a
small amount and probably
won’t lead to more illness. “most
people’s immune systems are
strong enough to protect them
from these types of germs,”
says Deepinder Sahota, D.D.S.,
spokesperson for the American
Dental Association. that said,
always store your brush upright
in an open holder, ideally in the
medicine cabinet, and replace
it every three to four months to
prevent more bacteria growth.
bottom liNe:
sorta bad!
…to dry your nails under a UV light? A: While a UV-light dryer
alone isn’t cause for worry,
“when you combine it with
the UV exposure you get
from the sun, it can up your
skin cancer risk,” says D’Anne
Kleinsmith, m.D., spokesperson
for the American Academy of
Dermatology. “on top of that,
UV light can also cause wrinkles
and age spots.” to keep your
hands out of harm’s way, opt
for a fan or a quick-dry topcoat
instead of the UV light. if you
must use one—say, you’re
getting a gel manicure that has
to dry under a UV light—protect
your hands. Apply water-
resistant sunscreen with an
SPF of 30 or higher before your
manicure, says Dr. Kleinsmith.
bottom liNe:
pretty bad!
…to use a driver’s license from a state where you don’t live? A: Sorry, procrastinators:
most states require you to apply
for a new license within 30 to
90 days of moving there. true,
you may never be found out—
usually the only way you’ll get
caught is if you’re pulled over
or involved in an accident—and
the fine is small (typically $25 to
$50). but wait longer and you’re
technically breaking the law,
says Justin mcNaull, director of
state relations for AAA. Also, if
your wallet gets stolen or you
misplace your license, replacing
an out-of-date one is a hassle.
it takes just minutes to fill out
the form (and there’s usually no
driving test), so save the possible
stress and apply for a new one
when you’re at the DmV getting
your new plates and registration.

help wanted
Prep your home for the rush of guests with this checklist from Chris Grundy, host of DIY Network’s Cool Tools.
is your house holiday-ready?
Scrub your oven. Get
rid of excess grease
by mixing water with
baking soda to create
a paste. Spread it on
interior surfaces, let it
sit overnight, then wipe
it clean. It’s less toxic than commercial
cleaners and less stressful on the oven
than its self-cleaning cycle, which you
shouldn’t use right before doing a lot of
cooking—the oven heats up so much, it
needs a rest before it goes back to work.
Clean your fireplace.
A hardworking fireplace
can leave a sooty mess.
Every week or two,
shovel up ash from the firebox, then
scrub the inside walls with a nylon brush.
At least once a year, have a professional
chimney sweep do an inspection and
cleaning to prevent a chimney fire.
Clear the garbage
disposal. Clean the
grinder so it’s ready to
tackle post-meal scraps:
Dump two cups of ice and one cup of
coarse salt down the drain. Then fill
your sink halfway with cold water and
run the disposal until the water is gone.
Notice an odor? Throw in some lemon
peels to freshen it up.
Flush gunk from sink pipes. Prevent
clogs by cleaning the P trap—
the curved section of pipe right
under your sink—before guests
arrive. Place a bucket under
the trap, unscrew the plastic or
metal nuts at both ends to remove it,
and dump out the contents—which will
probably be a slimy mix of water, dirt,
and hair. Wash out the trap in another
sink, then reattach it.
Hang lights
safely. You
don’t want relatives
tripping over a tangle
of wires just to get to the dining table.
Indoors and out, use plastic clips or small
adhesive hooks to tack holiday lights
well above the ground where they can’t
snag feet. Be especially careful not to
run cords under rugs, since friction from
increased foot trafc could cause sparks.
Keep your fridge cool.
Even if your refrigerator’s
thermostat is set to
the right temp (under
40°F), it may not be
cold enough to keep
food safely chilled if your condenser
coils are dirty. Located at the back
or bottom of the appliance, the coils
help the fridge stay frosty. But if they’re
covered in dust, they can’t do their job
properly. Unplug the fridge and clean
the coils with a coil brush (available at
hardware stores). Vacuum up any dirt,
and plug the fridge back in.
Make walkways slip-proof. Help
everyone get inside safely
by keeping pathways ice-
free. If it’s snowing, shovel
as close to party time as possible, then
follow with a thin scattering of deicer.
I like to use calcium chloride (available
at hardware stores) in liquid or pellet
form instead of rock salt. Calcium
chloride is about double the price, but
it’s less harmful to the environment and
very efective in extremely cold weather.

When it comes to shopping, celebrating and sprucing up your home, we’ve got a game plan to save you time and money–and make your holidays alittle bit merrier. Here, HGTV Designer Casey Noble shares her tricks for

Tips & Tidings from Casey Noble
Casey stores her decorations in containers (sorted by room and color) along with a portable tool kit, so getting her home holiday-ready is a cinch. Here’s
what’s inside:
Tape
Scissors
Ornament hangers
Needle nose pliers
Mini hot-glue gun

Home for the Holidays
“Entertain honestly,” says Casey. “Stay true to yourself and don’t strive for perfection at the expense of having fun. Your guests respond to your energy, so if you’re relaxed and having a good time, they will too,” she explains. “At this time of year, I prefer to host a few intimate gatherings rather than one big party. It’s nice to get away from the crowds.”
Present Perfect “When you’re shopping on a budget, pamper a group of friends or colleagues with thoughtful treats,” says Casey. “The key is to fi nd small luxuries, like designer nail polish or quality leather luggage tags.”
Deck The Halls“When it comes to holiday decor, ‘more is more!’” says Casey. “This is theone time of year you can go over the top. If you don’t want your whole homedripping in ornaments, pick a few focal points–like the mantle or foyer–andconcentrate your efforts there to create signature holiday moments.”

“This is the bedroom of a teenage

age well. I love it with the bright

“Once we put this pink on the
walls, the bathroom seemed to
come alive. When you have a
traditional space like this, an
unexpected shade makes it fun

pinks can appear more intense on
the wall than they do on a sample,
so consider one that’s a little lighter
than you think you might like.”

A crisscross pattern across the back is this chair’s signature. The
faux bamboo look was inspired by ceramics imported from East
Asia in the 1700s. The chair shares half of its name with another
chair in this story—they were designed by the same person.
This armless seat was designed low to the ground so women
could sit while putting on their shoes, which may explain why
it’s often placed in a bedroom. Hint: It shares its name with a
type of footwear worn around the house.
This armchair, with its wide seat and short arms, was made
to accommodate women’s big hooped skirts, popular in the
18th century. Now, it’s often sold with an ottoman for extra
comfort. Its name means “shepherdess” in French.
Despite the fact that its name means “parish ministers,” this
chair was not designed for the clergy. It was created at a
famous Paris design school in the 1930s, and today its unfussy
style makes it popular in restaurants and homes.

Named after the big wooden container it’s shaped like, this
chair has arms that wrap around the back. It wasn’t originally
upholstered but now often has a deep seat and thick cushion.
The key features of this chair are an oval
back and carved, fluted legs. Its namesake
is an 18th-century French king who was
reigning when it debuted.
This chair’s tall back and high sides were
meant to protect sitters from cold drafts
in hallways. Now, it’s a cozy accent chair,
popular in living rooms.
This chair’s knobby wooden arms and
legs look like the sewing tool that inspired
its name. Today it’s often made with
thick cushions, with or without arms.
This dining room staple is named after
the English cabinetmaker who designed
it. And in case you’re wondering, it has
nothing to do with shirtless male dancers!
Named after an English castle, this hoop
back style was popular in the colonies
during the American Revolution, and it’s
still a classic today.
Found in bistros all over Europe at the
end of the 19th century, this chair is still
popular in restaurants and also makes a
great addition to a kitchen table.
This comfy seat first appeared in gentlemen’s smoking rooms
in the 19th century. It was traditionally covered in leather, but
today you’ll see it in a variety of fabrics.

cranberries into foam spheres using extra-long pins,
securing the berries with dabs of hot glue as you go.
“Red is the most dramatic color, so I love busting out
diferent shades of it at Christmas,” says Genevieve.
“The scarlet ribbon makes the tree look like a big gift.”
when the HGTV Star judge
first hosted the White
House Christmas special four years
ago, she knew it was a big deal, but
she didn’t know how big. “There
are warehouses full of ornaments,”
Genevieve says. “The amount of
time, people, and energy that goes
into decorating the White House is
mind-boggling.” But what dazzles
her most—besides chatting with
Michelle Obama—are the decorating
ideas. “Every year I come home with
new ones to try.” So even if you’re not
having 90,000 visitors this season
(that’s about how many the White
House got last year!), you can still
find plenty of creative twists to copy.

The Green Room gets green decorations—the
ecofriendly kind. For this tree, recycled newspaper

“It’s a time-consuming project, but a small version

A HOLIDAY HAPPY HOUR
THAT SHINES
Presented by MIRASSOU WINERY
Between all the shopping and sit-down dinners, the holidays can be hectic.
This year, take time out to enjoy an evening with good friends and great wine
at home. Hosting a holiday happy hour is an easy and affordable way to
celebrate the season. Here are five of our favorite ways to get the party started:

“Brighten Your Table” Contest with
this “playful-trayful” suggestion:
Transform a tired or tarnished serving

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE FACEBOOK WALL
A gilded mirror makes an elegant and eye-catching menu board. Use a
dry-erase marker to feature the list of wines being served and suggest
food pairings to complement the flavors. Our recommended recipes are
available on Facebook and Mirassou.com. TIP FROM MIRASSOU
FACEBOOK FAN CLAUDIA S.
GO FOR THE GOLD Create a warm and welcoming table for your guests
away from the cold. Flip extra wine glasses and place
votive candles on top to add shimmer. Shiny tinsel
inside the glasses will bring a pop of color to the table.
 TAG, YOU’RE IT
A bottle of Mirassou wine makes a great memento of the
evening for your guests—affordable, fruit-forward, and easy
to drink and pair for any holiday occasion. Personalize it
with a quick DIY gift tag. To make a tag, cut patterned paper
or a greeting card, hole punch it at the top and secure with
gold ribbon. This favor will become a favorite!
APPETIZING ARRANGEMENTS For an attractive centerpiece, make what you’re
serving the star. Arrange colorful, bite-size foods in
the shape of a sun to add visual interest to your
table. TIP FROM DAVID MIRASSOU.

beach-themed
snowfake photos
I love the idea of big
paper snowflakes on a
tree. Add a black-and-
white photo to the center
of each one and you have
something special.
—Vern Yip, Live in Vern’s House
I’m mildly obsessed with Hawaii and the beach,
hence this seaside tabletop tree. The garland’s
made of knotted rope—very nautical!—and the
ornaments are painted starfish and shells.
—Sabrina Soto, The High Low Project
Make your own snowflakes, or
buy a snowflake-like garland
and separate the individual
flakes from the string. Cut a
photo or black-and-white
copy of a photo into a circle,
hot-glue to a circle of red
paper, then hot-glue to the
snowflake’s center.

toy car with a tree1. Hot-glue a mini sisal bottle brush tree ($2 for 2, factorydirectcraft.com) to the top of a toy car—we used a die-cast Mini Cooper S ($9, amazon.com). 2. Thread a ribbon through the car windows and tie it into a bow on top of the tree. Thread another piece of ribbon under the bow and knot into a loop to hang.
mini yarn wreath1. Wind two pieces of yarn in diferent colors around a wood curtain ring. We used Bonbons yarn in lime from the Brights set and green with emerald sparkle from the Jingle Bells set ($8 for each set of 8 mini skeins, lionbrand.com).2. Knot the yarn and trim excess. Hot-glue the knot to the back of the ring. 3. Pull a thread from a new piece of yarn and tie two bells to the ring. 4. Tie a ribbon into a small bow. Hot-glue it above the bells. 5. Hot-glue a ribbon loop to the back of the ring to hang.
washer snowfake1. Super-glue a brass washer on top of a larger zinc washer. Flip it over and glue eight smaller washers around it.
2. Flip it back over and glue eight large washers to the small ones. Flip it over again and glue eight small
washers to the large ones. 3. Loop a ribbon through a washer to hang, then cover the ribbon with an adhesive rhinestone. Stick rhinestones on the front of some of the other washers.
winter scene1. Use a crafts knife to cut a half-liter plastic bottle in half. 2. String a ribbon through a wood bead and knot into a loop to hang. Hot-glue the bead to the spout. 3. Trace the cut end of the bottle onto a piece of cardboard and a sheet of cotton batting. Cut out both circles, making the cardboard one 1/2-inch larger than what you traced. 4. Hot-glue the batting to the cardboard. Glue tinsel around the cardboard’s edge and around the bottle’s spout. 5. Cut tree shapes out of thin crafts foam. Cover in glitter, then hot-glue the trees to the batting. 6. Hot-glue the bottle’s cut end to the cardboard circle.

plastic bottle!

painted cube1. Stick a piece of painter’s tape diagonally across each side of a wood block ($12 for 10, createforless.com). 2. Use crafts paint to fill in one triangle on each side; let dry.3. Tape of a thin stripe next to each painted triangle and paint with a diferent color. 4. Twist a small screw-eye into one corner of the block to hang.
birdhouse1. Hot-glue an empty half-pint carton closed.2. Trace the four sides onto scrapbook paper—we used Recollections in Green Pin Dots (59¢ per sheet, Michaels stores)—then cut the pieces out and hot-glue them to the carton. 3. Cut out two circles—one brown paper circle and a slightly larger one in another color. Hot-glue circles to each other, then to the front of the carton. Cut a skewer to about 5 inches and push it through the carton below the circles. 4. To make the roof: Fold a 5 1/2-inch-by-4-inch piece of heavyweight paper—we used Pearl Wrap ($9 for 2 sheets, smockpaper.com)—in half. Unfold and make a 1/4-inch crease along one of the longer sides, then cut a slit at the halfway mark. Punch two holes through the top of the roof and thread a ribbon through to hang. Hot-glue the roof to the carton’s top. 5. Hot-glue the bottom of the carton to a square of patterned card stock. 6. Make a bird from red pom-poms and crafts paper, and hot-glue it to the skewer.
nail polish globe1. Remove the hanging hardware from a clear glass ball ornament. Pour in nail polish and swirl it around. 2. Let dry a few minutes, then repeat with another color. (We used Maybelline New York Color Show nail lacquer in Pink Shock, then Bold Gold).3. Set the ball upside-down over a paper cup to dry, then replace the hardware.

milk carton!

Q To make laundry
easier, I’m thinking
of moving our washer and
dryer from the main floor
to a second floor closet near
our bedrooms. What’s your
experience with this?
—Barbara Simon,
Wilmington, DE
HIlary: There is a ton of
work involved in making this
switch—plumbing, ventilation,
electrical—but lots of people
like the convenience of
a laundry room near the
bedrooms since it’s easier and
what would
hilary and davıd do?
Love It or List It’s interior designer Hilary Farr and real estate agent
David Visentin chime in on your questions.
Hilary and David tackle buying,
selling, and design dilemmas.Q We’re looking for a new home,
but our favorite neighborhood is
rumored to have too-soft soil, which can
cause foundation issues. What should we
watch for? —Tanya Carrejo, Sugar Land, TX
DaVID: When I hear “foundation
issues,” I worry. They’re a pain, and
they can cost thousands to fix. First
find out if the rumor is true—talk to
residents and local real estate agents
or building inspectors. If it is, I would
look in other neighborhoods where
you’ll have a better chance of finding a problem-
free house. If you’re set on this area, watch for red
flags like slanted floors or beams, or large, jagged
cracks on walls. If you decide to make a bid, be
sure to hire a qualified inspector beforehand.
faster to put clothes away. If
you decide to make the move
and plan to do laundry at
night, keep in mind that the
noise may keep you awake.
Upgrading your appliances
to quieter models is the best
solution—a front-load washer
is often quieter than a top-
loader, and some dryers have
anti-vibration technology. If
new appliances aren’t in your
budget, at least make sure the
closet door has a solid, not
hollow, core to mufe sound.
Q I want to
replace our
brass cabinet pulls
in the kitchen with
more modern ones.
What’s a good
choice for a finish?
—Kristin Shrout,
Lee’s Summit, MO
HIlary: Brushed
nickel or brushed
chrome pulls are
stylish and durable, and they
look great whether or not your
appliances are stainless steel.
Choose pulls with a simple
shape—nothing ornate—for a
clean, modern look. Some of
my favorite sources are rh.com,
signaturehardware.com, and
schoolhouseelectric.com.
Q We’re trying to sell
our house. Is it best to
set up the fourth bedroom as
a guest room, a nursery, or
an ofce?
—Brenda Brandley,
Oaklyn, NJ
DaVID: A home ofce is the
smartest plan. The average
family today has about two
children, which tells me that
making it a
nursery isn’t the
best way to draw
potential buyers.
A guest room is
the same thing as
a fourth bedroom
to most people as
well. On the flip
side, the number
of people working
from home has
grown in recent years, and
nearly all of the homeowners
we feature on Love It or List It
have an ofce space—or two—
on their wish list.

kids. When the family moved from the
Bay Area nine years ago, the season’s
shorter days and harsher climate took
some getting used to. “We were craving
hot California colors,” says Anna, a
stay-at-home mom who’s been a quilter
and crafter since she was a kid. So she
filled the house with sunshiny hues,
cheery patterns, and bright, homespun
accessories. Every room has a warm and
fuzzy vibe. “Sometimes friends come

Dressed in snowy whites and frosty blues, designer Sarah Richardson’s
Winter
weekend home is a warm, welcoming, and dreamy place to spend the holidays.

Living roomSarah designed the marble-top cofee table and the sofa and
chairs, which are upholstered in sturdy, $7-per-yard cotton twill.
The chandelier and most of the other pieces are flea market finds.
The family’s tree is a 7 1/2-foot-tall Fraser fir that her husband,
Alexander, cut from their property. Daughters, Fiona (left) and
Robin helped decorate it with white lights and handmade,
vintage, and heirloom ornaments in silver and gold. “It makes the
room feel like a wonderland,” says Sarah. The walls are painted
pale blue-green on top and light gray on the bottom. For a similar
look, try Opaline and Popular Gray, both by Sherwin-Williams.

s soon as mid-December rolls around,
Sarah Richardson heads north to her
weekend getaway in Creemore, Ontario,
with her husband, Alexander, and their
daughters, Robin, 7, and Fiona, 5. “It’s
two weeks of nonstop baking, family
visits, and snowy adventures,” says
Sarah. Since she decorated their full-
time home in Toronto with lots of bold
hues, the host of Sarah 101 decided to do the opposite for
this winter retreat, picking a quieter palette of white and
blue. “I love icy colors year-round, and they work especially
well in this house,” says Sarah. “Even though we often have
a lot of visitors, it still feels relaxing.”
AKitchenShutter-style upper cabinets, walnut floors,
and vintage pendants keep the kitchen
feeling homey. “We bake a lot, so I wanted
durable countertops,” says Sarah. She chose
white quartz for the counters and cream and
gray quartz for the island. “Spilled wine, hot
pots, even paint haven’t harmed them,” she
says. The lower cabinets, from Lowe’s, came
in this soft gray.
—Sarah Richardson
This is our only dining area, but the cushiony banquette is so comfortable, we often just hang out in here like it’s a lounge.
Dining areaThe family eats every meal in this room of the kitchen.
The girls love to sit on the window seat, which is
topped with a heavy-duty leather cushion and a mix of
pillows made from cotton fabric remnants from Sarah’s
ofce. The aluminum lantern, which holds a candle,
is from Pottery Barn. Two pairs of vintage chairs that
Sarah repainted and reupholstered sit around the table,
which is made of salvaged barn wood and columns.

There are no better colors for feeling instantly relaxed than the light, airy shades we have in this house.
Guest roomSarah’s mom, mother-in-law, and many of the family’s Toronto friends often
stay over, so the spare bedroom is always visitor-ready. The four-poster bed,
from a consignment shop, is dressed with a Macy’s quilt and IKEA duvet cover.
For a little pattern, Sarah chose an 8-foot-by-10-foot diamond-print wool
rug by Elte (elte.com for buying info) and a pair of square stools upholstered
in yellow ikat fabric (for similar, try thibautdesign.com). The walls are painted
cream on top and gray-green below with 6-foot-high molding in between. —Sarah Richardson

Kids’ room“it’s their little hideaway,” says sarah
of this nook-turned-kids’ room that
robin and fiona play in when it’s not
being used for young guests. sarah
designed the built-in bunks and hung a
pottery Barn Kids pail from a rope and
pulley so the girls can pass books and
flashlights back and forth. the cabana-
stripe wool rug is from elte (elte.com
for buying info), and the flea market
dresser, painted icy by sherwin-
Williams, carries out the house’s blue
and white color scheme. above it are
topographical maps of canada, which
sarah hung with wallpaper paste and
accented with upholstery tacks.
Mudroomeven a space that stores coats and ski gear can be pretty.
sarah picked a soft green-blue paint (try tidewater by
sherwin-Williams) for the closet doors, and added a vintage
light fixture from a toronto flea market. since the closets are
short—only a bit over 5 feet high—baskets on top are easy
for the adults to reach. Wall hooks, on the other hand, are
mounted low so the girls can hang their own jackets. the
honed limestone floor stands up to snowy footprints.

all i want for christmas…
…is a lively, festive kitchen!
most days Robin and Ken Gestal’s
kitchen is where the couple cooks
and eats dinner together, just the two of them.
But come Christmastime, their six grown kids
descend on their New Canaan, CT, home from all
over the country. Along with playing catch-up over
cofee and prepping meals, the family also makes
the kitchen the headquarters for their 20-year-
old cookie-baking tradition. But the room wasn’t
always so welcoming. When the Gestals bought
the 1910 Colonial, the kitchen was the last place
they wanted to be. “It was completely dated, with
ugly white tile countertops, wood cabinets that
had a strange shiny finish, and a stove with only
two working burners,” says Robin. So the Gestals
worked with designer Christine Donner to give the
space a roomier layout, updated features, and lots
of warm, homey accents. “Now if you walk into our
house during the holidays, it’s a safe bet you’ll find
everyone in here,” says Robin. And Bear, the family’s
golden retriever, wouldn’t have it any other way!
kitchen chronicles
When a Connecticut couple redid their kitchen, it became the whole family’s favorite holiday hangout.
granite countertopsHoned black granite counters line the
kitchen’s perimeter. “Granite has a
simple look, but it’s hardy,” says Robin.
“It’s fine to put hot things right on it, and
I just wipe it down with soap and water.”
cream-color cabinetsThe upper and lower cabinet banks
are painted Casa Blanca by Sherwin-
Williams. “We looked for a color
on the cusp of of-white but not
yellow,” says Christine. The paneled
fridge (at far right) is painted the
same shade to blend in.
reclaimed wood Three of the wood
ceiling beams were
in the kitchen when
the family moved in.
The Gestals kept them
and added a matching
perpendicular beam.
The original pine
floors—which had
been scratched up by
the family’s dogs—had
to go. Robin replaced
them with tougher
flooring made from
reclaimed heart pine.

corner ovens
Much of the wall space was taken up with windows. To keep the ovens near the cooktop, they were installed in a corner at an angle, a trick you can get away with in a roomy space.
cookbook libraryCustom shelving next to the refrigerator holds Robin’s cookbook collection and hides a big set of steel pipes. “We created a cabinet space about as deep as the refrigerator. The books sit up front, and the pipes take up the back half,” says Christine.
bronze pendantsA pair of 17 1/2-inch bronze pendants from Circa Lighting add a warm glow to the room. “I was skeptical at first because we don’t have high ceilings, but I love them,” says Robin. “ They look bold and give of great light.”
chunky square islandWraparound seating lets people face one another as they eat. The 89-inch-by-76-inch island is topped with a 2-inch-thick slab of butternut wood coated with a marine varnish to prevent moisture damage. The base is painted black (try Tricorn Black by Sherwin-Williams). Robin found the stools online for $99 each (for a similar look, try walmart.com).

spot when the kids are in town,

“Word spread, and now people
