THE ROUTE Starting at the Goldhawk Road underground station, exit into Wells Road. Turn right to the controlled crossing over Goldhawk Road to the entrance of Shepherds Bush Market. Walk through the market to the Uxbridge Road exit. Turn right into Uxbridge Road and using the controlled crossing, turn right and then left into Hopgood Street. Proceed left again into Macfarlane Road and follow the road around into Wood Lane. Turn left on to Wood Lane, walking under the railway bridge and past BBC Television Centre to your left and White City underground station to your right. Noting the historically named Exhibition Close, turn left into South Africa Road. Follow South Africa Road past the Territorial Army Centre and the sports area and turn left into Hammersmith Park. Follow the path straight ahead. Walk to the right of the metal sculpture through the gate towards the Japanese Garden. (Take care crossing the bridge.) Exit at Frithville Gardens and continue to the end turning right into Uxbridge Road. Cross at the refuge (or use the controlled crossing by Shepherds Bush Police Station) and turn left into Lime Grove. Follow Lime Grove until it reaches Goldhawk Road. Turn left to return to Goldhawk Road underground station. DID YOU KNOW? 1 SHEPHERDS BUSH MARKET started in 1914. Following severe bomb damage in the Second World War, the traders cleared the rubble themselves, avoiding the threat of closure. 2 THE DIMCO BUILDINGS are the original coal-powered electricity generating station built for London Underground in 1898. 3 THE BBC TELEVISION CENTRE started in 1950, is built on part of the White City Exhibition site which opened in 1908 with the Franco-British Exhibition. 4 THE BBC MEDIA VILLAGE is on the site of the former White City Stadium, which hosted the 1908 Olympics. It held 150,000 people. 5 DORANDO CLOSE commemorates Dorando Pietri, the marathon runner, who so narrowly missed winning in 1908. Although first to finish, he was disqualified for being helped over the line. 6 THE STONE DECORATION (animals, birds and plants) on either side of the doors in Frithville Gardens are unusual examples of their kind. 7 THE FIRST CUSTOM-BUILT FILM STUDIO in the UK was erected in Lime Grove in 1915. It became the home of British feature films and newsreels. Gaumont Terrace and Gainsborough Court are a reminder of the film companies. 8 HAMMERSMITH PUBLIC BATHS AND WASH HOUSE, 1905, was an important communal place for women to meet and launder the clothes of their large families before washing machines became widespread.
