The Premier and Department of Education have communicated strict guidelines aimed to successfully manage a return to school for students. From my conversations with students, parents and staff members it is obvious that we are all missing the socialisation and relationships that drive much of our wellbeing and sense of identity. We are missing playing sport, catching up for weak caramel lattes, playing Scrabble with nanna and having barbecues with friends. We are also missing school and connecting with peers and teachers. The central idea behind the Department’s managed return to school is to re-connect, but in a safe and coordinated manner so as not undermine the community’s success in controlling the spread of the virus. The school is supportive of this controlled and sensible approach and we ask parents to support us in turn. If you are yet to do so, please read this critical correspondence from Tuesday. Year 5 Opportunity Class Entry for 2021 The placement process for opportunity class entry in 2021, including the Opportunity Class Placement Test, will be delayed until later in the year. As a result, applications will not open on 28 April 2020 as previously advised. This delay is in response to the social distancing measures that are currently in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout the community. The opportunity class placement will still go ahead in 2020 however, the process for that, including the timeline, will look a little different this year. The department will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure people have access to the latest advice on how to keep staff, students and the community safe. Revised dates for applications, tests and process changes will be announced as soon as they are confirmed. Please continue to monitor the department's website to remain up to date with information relating to opportunity classes. Special Education in Ethics – Resources Primary Ethics has created a series of 20 lessons to help children practise their skills in critical thinking and ethical reasoning as they continue their mixed learning methods during Term 2. These lessons can be downloaded at no cost from primaryethics.com.au/education. Primary Ethics ‘Bites’ are available as audio or audio/visual recordings of between 10–15 minutes. Each ‘Bite’ contains age-appropriate stories and/or scenarios that support students to think through ethical dilemmas. Recordings of other students within the lessons help introduce alternative points of view. K-2 topic: Doing harm without meaning to 3-6 topic: Disagreeing respectfully Special Religious Education There will be no face-to-face learning in Scripture this term due to COVID-19. Instead, a range of web-based lessons / resources have been provided by the approved providers. It is up to parents whether they wish to explore this content with their children.

Online Learning Expectations The school has developed very clear expectations of students when they learn online. As well as abiding by all terms and conditions upon logging into their online portal, we ask that students are respectful, responsible, resilient and dream big by adhering to the following guidelines.

Productive School Development Days Thank you to our parents and students for remaining at home on Monday and Tuesday this week, allowing our staff to engage in professional learning and planning. We explored topics including student wellbeing, adjusting lessons to suit student need and School Excellence. Teachers also took some time to learn from one and other.

National Tree Day – 2 August While at home, why not jump online to the Planet Ark website and explore the National Tree Day initiative which is coming up? There are many ways to get involved, summarised at the back of this newsletter.

Tell Them From Me Survey – Years 4 to 6 Next week Years 4-6 teachers will ask their students to complete an important survey. Called the Tell Them From Me survey, students will be asked about their insights and perceptions of North Kellyville Public School. Questions will range from their engagement with learning to aspirations for the future. The data received by the school is de-identified, but is critical in us evaluating our effectiveness and planning for future priorities. Surveys take approximately 20 minutes to complete and we ask that ALL Years 4-6 students complete the survey by Thursday 28 May. Murat Dizdar, the Deputy Secretary of School Operations has provided this introductory video for students. Uniforms for Collection If you have been notified by Back to Basics that your child/ren’s uniform is ready for collection, you are able to pick them up from our administration office between 9:00am and 2:30pm. We are currently holding many uniform orders. 2019 Annual Report Each year schools must produce a report outlining expenditure, key targets and progress towards those targets. The North Kellyville Public School Annual Report for 2019 is now available here. Shortly it will also appear on our website. Tom Moth Principal

Learning From Home Campaign & Education LIVE The Department has launched a Learning from home campaign called connect better and learn together. The aim of the campaign is to inspire and uplift students, parents and carers, and teachers to feel connected and supported whether students are learning from home or at school. Prominent Australians, including Guy Sebastian, TV foodies Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan and Manu Feildel, Gardening Australia host Costa Georgiadis, Sydney Swans player Ollie Florent, and our very own Eddie Woo, have donated their time to help students kick start their day while learning together. Recordings of all the live streams are available on this website so you can catch up at any time.

North Kellyville Public School Library

Hezlett Road, North Kellyville NSW 2155 | P: 88011911 | E: [email protected]

North Kellyville Public School students in K-2 complete the Challenge through sharing books

with the teacher librarian, their Blue Hub teachers and home room teacher. Their reading

records are administered at school by the PRC coordinator, Ms Whelan, the teacher librarian.

Years 3-6 students are encouraged to participate in the Challenge but must complete their

reading records independently. Assistance is available if needed - students should consult

their home class teacher or the teacher librarian, Ms Whelan. It is recommended that students

access the PRC website via their student portal.

The following information for parents/caregivers comes directly from the Premier’s Reading Challenge website. The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is managed and administered by the NSW Department of Education’s Arts Unit.

Tips for parents/caregivers:

9 Familiarise yourself with the new PRC student website. There is a video on the PRC Support site that you

can watch that demonstrates how to login, search for books and add them to a Student Reading Record

(SRR).

9 Visit the Premier’s Reading Challenge Support website. It allows you to search for information about the

PRC and how to use the PRC website and also how to contact the PRC team.

9 Set reminders for Challenge opening and closing dates in your and your child’s calendar.

9 Find out your child’s logon details. For public schools, students’ logon will be the same one they use to

access computers and the internet at school.

9 Assist your child to borrow books from the school or local library. Listen to your child read and talk about

the story/ characters/ information. Read to or with your child if she/he is participating in the K-2 Challenge.

9 Help your child to add books to her/his Student Reading Record regularly.

9 Follow the Arts Unit on Facebook and the NSW PRC on Instagram to keep up to date about information

about the Challenge throughout the year. We regularly run contests and Author events your child may be

interested in taking part in.

9 Contact your child’s PRC coordinator if:

o Your child has any difficulty using her/his logon details to access the PRC website.

o You are concerned that your child’s name is spelt incorrectly in the PRC website.

Important notes:

If you need to check your child’s Challenge history, please contact your child’s PRC coordinator.

Your child’s online Student Reading Record must have the required number of books recorded to complete the

Challenge by the student closing date. School PRC coordinators have an extra two weeks to validate the SRR.

Only students with a validated SRR are eligible for a certificate.

In the final weeks of the Challenge, log on regularly to the website to check the status of your child’s

SRR. Contact your child’s PRC coordinator if you are concerned your child’s SRR has not been validated.

National Tree Day

Dear Parents, National Schools Tree Day is on July 31st.

It started in 1996 and has grown into Australia’s largest community tree-planting and nature care event. Each year over 3,000 preschools, kindergartens, primary and high schools across Australia participate in Schools Tree Day to plant seedlings and restore thousands of hectares of unique Australian landscape. Over 25 million trees have been planted by more than 4 million people, and this number continues to grow with the help of dedicated volunteers around the country. Unfortunately, this is not possible at present.

So as we spend more time indoors and many of us have been thinking about how we can use this time and keep our children entertained, the Tree Day team from the Planet Ark organisation have been thinking the same.

They have organised activity sheets in the toolkit for young students A competition for the under 18’s And ideas on how to connect with nature from your own backyard or balcony. If you have any ideas you would like to share please get in touch at [email protected] so they can share with the community.

If you are interested please share your photos with @nationaltreeday on

Facebook and Instagram.

Are you growing something in your garden? On your balcony? Show them your house plants! Whatever it is they want to see how you connect with nature. Use the hashtag #connectwithnature and they will reshare with the Tree Day community. If your child would like to enter, please encourage your child and follow the links.

TIP SHEET- LEARNING FROM HOME As schools close their doors, many parents are concerned about the disruption to their child’s education. So, what’s the best way to keep kids learning at home? Focus on What you Can do It is important that children are supported to focus on the things we can do in responses to the changing environment. Explaining the importance of staying home and good hygiene is a way for children to feel empowered and helpful.

Establish a Daily Routine

Follow the advice and the protocols put in place by the school and support your child to maintain a routine while at home. Routines help create predictability and reduce anxiety. Ensure that the daily schedule includes a balance of academic, creative, physical and social activities with clear expectations for wake-up and bedtimes.

Using visuals or the attached schedule worksheet may help!

KEEP IT POSITIVE

Reward the hard work well done.! Make sure you

acknowledge the efforts your child

has put into their work!

Stay CONNECTED

While social distancing is VITAL,

staying in touch with friends is als0 important for

children. Providing opportunities to

interact socially with peers will help

maintain connections and boost their mood. Schedule this into the day just as recess and lunch at school. There are many technology options available to

support virtual connections!

Page 12: Hezlett Happenings ~ 1 May 2020 · 5/1/2020  · Storybox and EPlatform At the back of the newsletter are details about how to access Storybox and EPlatform. Both are outstanding

STAY ACTIVE

Children spend a lot of time moving around at school, so it’s important to ensure that they are still engaging in activities they enjoy while they’re at home.

If it’s practical, spend some time outside riding, jogging or walking. It’s worth walking. It’s worth also looking into some of the many fitness apps available that can ‘organise’ your activity for you.

Family board games or working on a project can also keep the mind active!

Consider how long your child is working

Children learn best if learning is completed in short bursts. Working for 30-40 minutes and then scheduling a break or snack is an important way to optimise your child’s engagement when learning at home.

Monitor Screen Time

Online learning means children are spending extra time online. It is important that parents monitor the chat rooms and activities online. Having conversations about safe online behavior is especially important during these times.

READ!

Reading is a wonderful way to improve language and knowledge. Use this time to encourage your children to read a new book, magazine or even

computer game instructions!

Reach out to your

child’s school, other parents or friends if you need support.
