HP 250 Series

Major Price Reduction on New HP 250/20! Do you have any customers who would like a multi-user data base system? Now you can offer them HP's low-end multi-user business computer, the HP 250120. ' d it now comes standard with tKb of new state-of-the-art 64K

RAM user memory!

Here's how you order this model:

The basic configuration is shown at the table at the end of the article. Then you can order whatever op- tional printers, plotters, additional workstations, and application software that are desired.

Just keep in mind the cautions which we mentioned in the HP 2501 20 Field Training Manual:

The 4.7Mb disc is significantly slower than the other disc drives

supported on the HP 250. It is de- signed to support one or two workstations in general. Of course, additional disc drives as well as workstations can be added to the 250120. Certain application software packages such as OM1250 are too large to run on the 4.7Mb disc. The system must be booted up from the 1.2Mb floppy. (This is generally more of an advantage than a disadvantage, since the full 4.7Mb oi disc capacity is then available for application software .)

The HP 250120's lower price will ap- pear on the August 1 HP Price List and applies to all factory shipments starting July 26.

This system will help you increase your penetration of the low-end multi-user business computer mar- ket by providing more solutions for more first-time computer owner applications.

HP 250 Rated Best in Datapro Survey! According to a recent survey of 2,753 mini computer users by Datapro Research Corporation, the HP 250 was rated highest in overall satisfaction, with a perfect 4.00 score, compared with 42 other computer systems.

Users ranked the TBM S134 at 3.42, Wang at 3.36, and Basic FourlMAI at 3.07.

The HP 250 was also one of only five systems for which 100% of the users said they would recommend the system to another user.

And as you might expect, the HP 250 was the only system that re- ceived a perfect 4.0 rating in both ease of operation and ease of programming.

The Datapro survey is based on returns from a mailing to a cross- section of Computerworld readers, and the survey is described in de- tail in the June 14 issue of Computer- world.

A700 Board Set Introductioii In response to requests from you, our A-Series OEM customers, Data Systems Division is making avail- able the A700 computer board set.

The A700, available up to now only in box- or system-level products, provides all the features of the powerful new A600 micro- computer, along with a sophisti- cated Computation Acceleration Processor card capable of executing up to 225,000 floating-point in- structions per second. This card is based on HP's proprietary silicon- on-sapphire (SOS) technology, and has attracted wide press coverage because of its high performance and powerful matrix-handling and scientific firmware (see Feb. 10, 1982 issue of Electronics).

The A700 is also user-micro- programmable. A powerful high- level microprogramming language called the Paraphraser has been an- nounced, allowing you to reap the benefits of fast microcode execu- tion without the pain and anguish of earlier microprogramming pro- cedures. Some users estimate that this package will reduce microcode development costs by 60% to 80% compared to competitive offerings.

Error-correcting memory is also available for the A700 in 512Kb increments. Error correction does not degrade the memory performance.

Your HP sales rep has more infor- mation on the A700 board set, the A700 CAP card, the A-Series fam- ily, and the Paraphraser.

L-to-A600 Trade-Up Program Underway A program is currently underway to allow HP customers who have L-Series computers to send them back to HP for credit towards the

purchase of equivalent A600 com- puter products.

L-Series board, box, microsystem, and system-level products are eligi- ble for the program as long as they were ordered on or before 1 March 1982, when the new A600 went on the HP Corporate Price List.

This program represents an op- portunity to Trade Up your L-Series for an A600 which is five to ten times faster. RTE-L and RTE- XL may be traded up to RTE-A.l, retaining all their strengths but with new features like EMA, VMA, and shareable EMA. Your invest- ment in hardware and software is protected by the high degree of compatibility between the L-Series and the A600. The L-Series I10 sys- tem has been retained, so all the same interfaces work with the A600. RTE-A.l is a superset of RTE- LIXL; compatible programming language products run on both machines, and applications using RTE software products like IMAGE11000 and Graphicsl1000-I1 can be moved without modification. Your HP saIes rep has full details on the Trade-Up program.

HP 3000 Series

Introducing APs/3000 Application Program SAMPLER1 3000 (APSl3000) is a friendly, in- teractive, performance measure- ment software product for tuning application programs on the HP 3000, with the goal of increasing the overall system performance.

APSl3000 helps the programmer to identify CPU bottlenecks in the source code of application pro- grams. APSl3000 does this by monitoring the execution of appli- cation programs using a status sampling technique, and produc- ing histograms showing the rela- tive CPU time spent by various por- tions of the monitored program. Since an application program fre- quently calls for the services of the operating system such as intrinsics and library calls, APSl3000 reports the CPU time spent in system ser- vices as well as the CPU time spent directly in the user code. APSl3000 can monitor the single execution of a program or the multiple execu- tion of shared programs.

APSl3000 can be used either during program development or on exist- ing programs. In a typical applica- tion, the user monitors a particular program, studies APS13000's his- tograms, and optimizes the code which consumes the most CPU time. This process is repeated until the programmer believes that the software performance is acceptable.

APSl3000 can thus simulate the judgment of an experienced pro- grammer in identifying CPU software bottlenecks, resulting in increased programmer productiv- ity. Although APSl3000 is intended primarily for interactive use, it can also be executed in batch mode. The histograms can be displayed on any HP terminal and a hard copy of the display generated on a line printer for future study.

APSl3000 will be supported on all HP 3000 SPUs running MPE-IV, and on all HP terminals. COBOL 11, FORTRAN, PASCAL, BASIC (Compiler) and SPL will support APSl3000.

European Re-Marketing Operation Established Starting March 1, HP began form- ing the newly established Re-Mar- keting and Supplies Europe (RSE) to introduce Re-Marketing systems to the European marketplace. RSE combines the new Re-Marketing team with the already successful computer supplies activity in Europe.

Today, RSE is in full operation and Re-Marketed Systems are easier than ever to order. A European marketing team now exists to assist you with sales. Personnel from both RSE and BGD and the Euro- pean Sales Center (ESC) are confi- dent that they can help you to close many deals with previously un- reachable customers. RSE is cur- rently located at the Boeblingen facility, phone (7031) 6671 or 667.

256K Configurations for Series 40SX Limited to Eight Terminal Ports A number of questions have re- cently been raised about the 256K minimum configuration of the Series 40SX, and the number of terminals that can be supported on such a configuration.

Our information and performance testing has always indicated that an HP 3000 system with 256K of main memory could support relatively few terminals. This is due to the ex- cess memory demands that large numbers of terminals place on the system, and the inability of the sys- tem to satisfy these demands with 256K of main memory.

In the course of our regular system configuration testing, it has been found that eight is the maximum number of terminal ports that can be configured in the minimum memory Series 40SX system. In our tests the system was confi- gured, brought up and eight ter- minal sessions were successfully initiated. This limitation of eight ports is brought about strictlybe- cause of the amount of main mem- ory available, and can be elimi- nited by adding memory to the system.

Any Series 40SX configuration of more than eight terminal ports (two ADCCs) must have at least 512Kb of main memo y. As the 256K Series 40SX was speci- fically positioned as a solution for users requiring relatively few ter- minals, we do not expect this clarification to cause any problems with system sales, nor impact the competitiveness of a system re- quiring more than eight terminal ports. Such systems should contain more memory!

The Series 40SX offers the smallest initial memory configuration of any HP 3000 system, thus striking the best compromise between minimizing the entry level system price and providing a minimum system that can perform useful work.

One must realize, however, that as the size and capabilities of MPE have grown, the definition of a "useful" minimum system has also changed.

Computer Systems Division has continually done system testing to ensure the viability of our HP 3000 system configurations, and to be able to specify the performance that could be expected from those configurations under specific cir- cumstances. This performance data, as all of you know, is at best an approximation and will vary ac- cording to the customer's work- load. The Performance Guide (PIN 5953-7441) presents this data in more detail.

HPTOOLSET - Productivity Tools for COBOL I1 Programmers HP has introduced HPTOOLSET, a powerful productivity aid targeted for the largest community of programmers on the HP 3000 - COBOL programmers. When used with the COBOL I1 compiler, HPTOOLSET integrates a number of productivity tools to increase programmers' effective- ness in major areas of program de- velopment and maintenance:

Full Screen Editor Full screen editing reduces time and effort in program entry and modification. Programmers can now page through their source code, quickly spot errors and make corrections, all interactively with- out printed listings.

Wo~rkspace Manager Programmers spend more time programming instead of managing files. HPTOOLSET's workspace manager manages all source files, versions of source files, $INCLUDE file:;, the USL file, and program file.

COBOL 11 Interface Program Key Programmers can compile, prep, and run programs, as well as locate and correct compile time errors, all using screen-labeled function keys. Programmers new to the 3000 can more quickly begin developing COBOL programs without having to learn complex MPE commands. And COBOL I1 programmers can eliminate much of the time spent managing volumes of printed list- ings because HPTOOLSET handles their listings online.

COBOL 11 Symbolic Debug COBOL I1 Symbolic Debug cuts dramatically the time required to locate and correct run time errors during program testing and de- bugging. Programmers no longer need to specify code locations and memory addresses as required with MPE Debug. Instead, pro- grammers can debug their COBOL programs using the variable names and paragraph names actually used in their programs. The results are error free programs produced faster and with less effort.

This integrated set of tools offered by HPTOOLSET reduces the time, expense, and complexity of COBOL programming for novice programmers to the most experi- enced COBOL programmers on the 3000.

Series 30R vs. Series 33R Identical Performance in Different Cabinets The Re-Marketing program has brought two siblings closer to- gether. The Series 33R and the Series 30R share the same parent- age: processor, architecture, and even the console are identical. Their main differences have been in price and cabinetry. While SRO is not changing the cabinets on these two products, we have done our pricing to reflect their similarity rather than their minor difference. The Series 33R has the nominal advantage of a desk-styled cabinet with an isolation transformer. This is compensated by a $500 lower list price for the Series 30R. In addition the availability advantage enjoyed by the Series 33R at introduction is now shared by the Series 30R. Cur- rently both products are in good supply and have a 4- to &week availability.

From the performance standpoint, the systems are identical. The same architecture is shared by the Series 30R and Series 33R. When consid- ering your customer's needs you will often find that the Series 30R and its rock bottom price will be the most appropriate solution. rh,

HP 9826A/9836A Special Options

possible to upgrade existing 9826A 9835A/B will be customer units by installing a new CRT Alpha ASSY. Discontinued

Ergonomics is becoming more and more important in Europe in the working environment, particularly where computers are concerned. Two of the most critical compo- nents in the manlmachine interface are the computer keyboard and dis- play. These are where the user en- ters information and where the computer displays results. That's why maximizing user comfort and convenience is so important, and that's why Boeblingen Desktop Computer Division designed two new special options for the popular HP 9826Al9836A desktop computer: *Special Option: GO2 - Detached keyboard for both, the HP 9826A and 9836A.

*Special Option: G26 - Enlarged display character for the HP 9826A (Europe price list only)

For standard ASCII, German, French, Spanish, Swedish and Finnish. List price: no charge

The detached keyboard for the 9826A and 9836A allows the user to position the keyboard according to individual tastes, install the pro- ducts as per the ergonomic re- quirements or put a data tablet di- rectly in front of the display with the keyboard adjacent. The larger easy-to-read display characters of the 9826A provide a display with a larger character ma- trix (9x6) for enhanced legibility. Because of the importance of er- gonomics in Europe, those options are special European options (G special) only; they will not be placed on the HP price list and will only be offered from BDD. The in- troduction was on June 1,1982 and the European field has al- ready been informed. The availability for the new, special options is about eight weeks. It is

Please note that it is not possible to upgrade an existing 9826A19836A to a detached keyboard.

HP 97s to be Discontinued The HP 97s I10 Calculator will be re- moved from HP's price list on January 1, 1983. Orders can be ac- cepted through the end of January in the US and through the end of March in all other countries. Ship- ments can occur up to six months after placing the order. Service sup- port, replacement parts, and con- sumable~ will be available until January, 1988.

The decision to discontinue the 97s was made for two reasons. First, sales have dropped to a low level, and second, the 97s with battery charger connected will not pass the FCC specifications for EMI. The deadline for complying with this specification is October 1,1983. (Do not confuse the 97s with the HP 97A calculator, which will continue to be produced.)

We encourage 97s OEMs to con- sider the HP-41C Calculator as an alternative. With the newly-intro- duced Hewlett-Packard Interface Loop (HP-IL), the HP-41C makes an excellent compact controller for low-cost instrumentation systems. Microprocessor-based instruments can be made to communicate over HP-IL by designing into them the HP 82166A HP-IL Converter, which converts parallel data to HP- IL. The HP-41C is supported with a wide range of peripherals, in- cluding card reader, printerlplot- ter, optical wand, and memory modules.

We are considering discontinuing HP 9835A/B products due to im- pending FCC RFI regulations and other factors. Proposed discon- tinuance dates are listed below.

HP 2623A ANSI Cornpatability Mode Dat,a Terminals is proud to an- nounce the availability of the HP 2623A Special Option F07. Special Op-tion F07 provides the user with an HP terminal that will function properly on non-HP systems using ANSI protocol. In addition to functioning on ANSI compati- ble systems, F07 still functions as a standard 2623A graphics terminal. F07 accomplishes this by giving the terminal a selectable mode of operation: "ANSI Mode" or "HP Mode".

In tlhe ANSI Mode of operation, F07 "speaks" to the host computer using ANSI software communica- tion protocol. "ANSI protocol" is a terrn used to describe software conlmunications between two de- vices, as defined by the American a National Standards Institute. In this mode, graphics and parameterized sequences are still available.

In t.he HP Mode of operation, F07 "speaks" to the computer using Hewlett-Packard software com- munication protocol. The 2623A fun~ctions as a standard 2623A ter- minal in this mode.

2623A F07 Features 262tlA F07 features include:

ANSI mode of operation where th~e terminal responds to and pirocesses ANSI control sequences HP mode of operation where the 2t123A operates as a standard 2023A alphanumericlgraphics terminal F07 character sets include USASCIT, line drawing, and Roman Extention Answerback capability - the terminal has the ability to au- tomatically identify itself to the

characters. The answerback message is saved in non-volatile memory. The mode of operation, ANSI or HP, can be changed program- matically or via the Terminal Configuration Menu, and is saved in non-volatile memory.

With the addition of Special Option F07 to the HP 2623A terminal, this product becomes three terminals in one: an HP alphanumeric1 graphics terminal, a TEKTRONIX 4010 compatible terminal, and an ANSI compatible terminal. (Tek- tronix is a registered trademark of Tektronix Corporation.) For more information on the 2623A special option F07, call your sales rep.

HP 13296A and Options Over the past few months we have received a number of calls about the HP 13296A, HP-IB Interface ca- bles, the raster dump option and the rotated raster dump capability. When ordering the 13296A without an option you get the shared peripheral Interface PCA (PIN 02640-60128), the two meter HP-IB cable (PIN 8120-1834) and the HP- IB load box (PIN 02640-60215). Specifying Option 048 provides one raster dump ROM (PIN 1818- 0746) and the 2648A user and ref- erence manual. This ROM is stan- dard in all 2648A's shipped after November 1,1980. Specifying Option E76 provides the rotated raster dump ROM for the 2648A. This ROM rotates and dumps the raster from the display of a 2648A to a HP graphic printer.

When to sell .the HP 2622A vs HP 2624B! The HP 2622A is Hewlett-Packard's low cost block mode terminal while the HP 2624B is Hewlett-Packard's high performance data entry prod- uct. The question has been asked "When do I sell the HP 2622A vs the HP 2624B?"

If your customer requires a basic block mode capability with two pages of display memory and dis- play enhancements, then the HP 2622A is the right product. If your customer also needs a RS-232 serial printer capability then the HP 2622A with Option PO3 is the ap- propriate solution.

However, if your customer needs 2622A capabilities plus four to nine pages of display memory, Local edit checks, Local forms cache and/ or Multipoint support then the HP 2624B is the best solution.

HP 2647F: Interest is Running High As expected, interest in the HP 2647F is running high due to its extensive feature set that makes it suitable for many business and technical applications.

Some major features are: w Screen preview graphics w Full alphanumeric block mode

terminal capabilities (VPLUS compatible, etc.) Local BASICIAGL programmability Local word processing software accessory

w Shared peripheral IIF for easy connection to hardcopy plotters1 printers (standard)

w Local flexible disc storage w Display enhancements with Line

Drawing, Math and Large Character Set (standard) Convertible GraphicsINumeric Keypad

w 64K Program Memory

All of these features have prompted some of you to ask how the 2647F fits in with other prod- ucts from HP like the HP-87, HP 125, HP 9836. To help put things in perspective, keep in mind the dis- tinction between the 2647F as a ter- minal and these other products as computers. For applications that re- quire extensive stand-alone capabilities, such as AUTOPLOT and local programmability, and compatibility with the HP 1000 or HP 3000 recon~mend the HP 2647F. If a large number of calculations must be performed or extensive software libraries are required, rec- ommend a Hewlett-Packard per- sonal or desktop computer. Re- member that no other HP product can match the combined off-line graphic workstation capabilities and on-line terminal features of the HP 2647F.

Introducing the HP 7585A E/AO Size Drafting Plotter

a HP is proud to announce the HP 7585A drafting plotter, the newest and biggest member in HP's plotter family. The 7585A can do plots on paper as big as three feet by four feet! This standard paper size is known as "E" size in the US and "AO" size (841mm x 1189mm) in most other countries. What we learned when we introduced the sme~ller 7580A last year was that this larger size was a must for many applications. The result is a pro- duct that is compatible with the 7580A, and that gives HP a strong plotter family offering.

Many Features But Low Price The 7585A would be a good prod- uct if it were priced the same as competitive units, because of its many unique contributions:

Compactness: light weight, easily moved to other departments, low power consumption Pen System: automatic pen force and speed settings, pen capping to prevent dryout, eight pens Intelligence: internally generated circles, character sets, dashed lines Quality Output: 0.00012" mechanical resolution with 0.001" programmable address- able resolution Ease-of-Use: easy media loading, automatic media size settings

Applications Applications for the 7585A are:

Mapping: surveying, topog- raphy, hydrology, etc. Architecture: building design, in- terior systems layout, piping, etc. Electrical Design: PC, IC and schematic plots Mechanical Design: part plots for all manufacturers Management: project schedules, graphs for reports, etc.

The 7580A has already established itself as a pricelperformance leader, and we expect the 7585A to open new opportunities

Introducing Hewlett-Packard HP 2608A to be Roller-Ball Pens Offers OEM Discount Obsoleted in October Announcing the introduction of the roller-ball pen on August 1 for use on the 7580A and 7585A draft- ing plotters. The roller-ball pen is intended to produce fast, working quality drawings. Plotting at the fastest speed (60 crnlsec) of the 7580A and 7585A, this pen allows ,the user to increase plot throughput by decreasing the plot- ting time.

Designed to write immediately when selected from the pen stall, the roller-ball pen minimizes start up problems and skipping seen in many rolling-ball type pens. In ad- dition, a minimum writing distance of 1100 meters provides more than three times the life of the fiber-tip pens and the roller-ball provides a consistent line width throughout the entire life of the pen.

The roller-ball pen is available in four colors (black, red, green, blue) and one line width (0.3 mm).

Both tracing bond and standard bond plotter paper have been selected for use.with the roller-ball pen. The tracing bond is an un- coated vellum paper which is diazo ("blueprint") reproducible for ap- plications where copying is required.

These and other consumable supplies for the drafting plotter may be ordered through your local HP Sales & Support Office, the Computer Supplies direct tele- phone ordering service, or HP Parts Center Europe (PCE).

on Laser Printer Hewlett-Packard now offers the HP 2680 Laser Printer to OEM buyers at quantity discounts.

Depending on quantities ordered, discounts vary from 15 to 38 per cent. For example, purchases of 67 units or more per year are eligible for the 38 per cent discount.

The 2680 Laser Printer, which prints at 45 pages per minute, is capable of printing text and graphics, logos, signatures, forms, reports, manuals, and correspond- ance.

HP 2608s Supported on GRAPHICS11000-I1 The HP 2608s can now be used as an output device for GRAPHICS1 1000-11 software on HP 1000lMlElF systems. With this support, the 2608s becomes a multi-purpose printer capable not only of line printing, but of graphics printing. The resolution for 2608s graphics is 70 x 72 dots per square inch, and it can print a 13.2" x 11" page in about 20 seconds.

A standard 2608s printer operates at 400 lines per minute, or at 350 lines per minute using a high den- sity character set. Up to 16 charac- ter sets, including national lan- guages, line draw sets, large block character sets and a scientificlmath character set, can be resident in the printer and accessed in any print job.

With the introduction of the HP 2608s printer, the 2608A printer will be removed from the HP Price List in October of this year. If you need 2608A printers, please plan accordingly, as 2608A orders will not be accepted after October 31, 1982.

The 2608s offers a lower purchase price, lower maintenance price, and greater printing flexibility than its predecessor, the 2608A. The 2608s uses a different driver than the 2608A, however, both drivers are included in the latest operating systems for HP 1000s and HP 3000s. Non-HP drivers will require alterations to drive the 2608s.

HP 2601A Sound Enclosure The HP 2601A Letter Quality Printer is a necessary part of word processing systems that use HP computer equipment. Letter qual- ity printers, however, often print at a noise level that may be disrup- tive to an office environment.

The solution to this problem is the 92177ElF Sound Enclosure that is available from CSO. This enclosure reduces the sound by over 30% and still allows access to platen posi- tioning and the front control panel. You can read more about it on page 11 of CSO's Spring 1982 Computer User's Catalog.

The question has arisen as to whether or not the enclosure is large enough to handle the op- tional tractor feed mechanism on the 2601A. We're pleased to tell you that it is.

HP 267lA/267lG/ 2673A Printer Differences The HP 267X Series of thermal printers include three models that, although upward compatible, have feature differences. This article will provide a brief review of those dif- ferences. No attempt is made to list all of the features of any of these printers, only those where some differences exist between models. Please refer to the data sheet for a full list of printer features.

HP 2671A Thi:~ printer is alphanumeric only supporting the full USASCII 128 character set. There are no graphic capabilities. In addition to USAS- CII, the line drawing and Roman Extcznsion character sets are stan- dard. There are no optional charac- ter sets available. Interfaces avail- able are HP-IB, RS-232C, &bit parilllel, and Centronics parallel. This printer has the ability to print either 80 columns on an 81/2 inch wide page at 10 characters per inch (normal mode), or 132 columns at 16.2: characters per inch (com- pressed mode).

character sets (standard). The 2673A supports all of the 2671G graphics features plus auto center- ing, offsets, and windowing.

AUTO CENTERING allows the graphics image to be automatically centered on the printed page re- gardless of the size of the image.

WINDOWING allows the user to send only a selected portion, or window, of the graphics image to the printer.

OFFSETS allow the user to define the placement of the graphics image on the printer by defining the starting X-Y coordinates for the upper left corner of the image.

The 2673A also has additional user features. For example, the user can define margins, tab stops, print mode, character set selection, communications parameters, and other user definable characteristics from the control panel. On the 2671 printers, user definable features can only be defined with escape sequences from the host system. Furthermore, with the 2673A, these user definable characteristics are non-volatile and, therefore, are not lost when power is shut off.

The net result is that the 2673A is

System users. Cabinets and doors are putty-colored to match or com- plement a wide range of HP products.

Security Lock All cabinets have a roll-up door which can be locked to keep valuable media, programs, and supplies safe and secure.

Space Efficient The roll-up door- makes efficient use of avail- ablespace, which means more use- ful storage space inside the cabinets. When the door is open, access to any part of the cabinet is easy.
