In continuous research on painting, the abstraction itself is a central concept. Ien Lucas’ paintings reflect the everyday processes of painting: searching for possibilities in composition, color, texture, surface, form and space, all separated from reality. Her works also reflect the everyday interactions with paintings: the search, execution, the preparation, interrogation, registration, and the decision. For Ien Lucas, continuing her work without becoming repetitive is a challenge in and of itself. What can be discovered in the stripes, circles, points, and lines? What is the way forward?

For the work ‘Boogie’, Ien Lucas returns to 2008, when the first works with yarn were made in an atelier in Spain. She began to experiment on a small scale, using the bundles of yarn and to create lines. The composition and color determined the image, while paint is used as an adhesive. During this search, Ien reached a point where she looked to get a ‘grip’ on color choice. She used her most valued artworks as fundaments.

Much like the name implies, the iconic ‘Victory Boogie Woogie’, made by Mondriaan, inspires ‘Boogie’. The playfulness of this artwork made with paint and tape inspired Ien to use it as a point of departure for ‘Boogie’. The artwork uses the middle line of Mondriaan’s painting as a basis. Through the lines created by bundles of yarn, ‘Boogie’ reflects the lively and vigorous attitude of Mondriaan’s works. During the making of the artwork, various possibilities have been considered and negotiated, such as the size and direction of the canvas, or the composition of the yarn bundles. Finally, Ien Lucas reached the angled square, explicitly referencing to ‘De Stijl’.
