HEUFT VX
The HEUFT VX combines all the functions
in one device which are necessary
to ensure the highest product quality
with the best possible filler and closer
efficiency:
In its role as a full container inspector it
examines the fill level for overfilling and
underfilling whilst taking the foam which
may be present into consideration,
checks a large number of closure
Optimal product quality and efficient production
features, detects trapped residual
air and ensures a perfectly filled and
closed product. At the same time
functions such as the bottle burst
management and the fill tube detection
prevent potential risks to the customer.
It takes over the monitoring of the
filler and closer in its line analysis
function and provides exact information
regarding the operation of individual
filler valves / closer heads. In this
way malfunctions are identified in
good time and production downtimes
involving costs and requiring repairs
are avoided.

HEUFT VX
It is not only important to detect a fault
but also to eliminate its cause. The
HEUFT VX provides the operator with
an integrated tool in order to make
it easier to find the cause: the filler /
closer management system.
Information regarding the overall
production quality can be obtained on
the one hand and the performance of
upstream machines such as the filler
Filler / closer management
and closer can be monitored by means
of statistical methods on the other hand
using this system.
For example if a certain valve regularly
underfills this is detected by the
filler management system of the
HEUFT VX. The system generates a
warning message so that action can be
taken as quickly as possible.
The graphic preparation of the data
helps to compare the performance
of the individual valves. This system
supports filler maintenance and
troubleshooting should the need arise.

So that the container does not become a danger
A serious health risk to the customer:
on average bottles burst in the filler
once an hour along standard glass
filling lines. In the course of this dan-
gerous glass splinters fly around which
can have a lasting effect on product
safety. The bottle burst detection in the
HEUFT VX detects shattered containers
and removes them from the production
flow.
Not only these are rejected but also
adjacent bottles and those which
have been filled during the subse-
quent circuits with the same valve or
one which is not far away. The risk
of products contaminated with glass
splinters reaching the consumer has
therefore been averted. In addition the
HEUFT VX can have these purposefully
underfilled in order to rule out the con-
tainers in question being inadvertently
returned to the production flow. You
can determine yourself for how many
of them these safety measures should
apply. The shower function for cleaning
the areas possibly contaminated with
glass splinters provides extra safety. In
this way you protect your customers‘
health and your company from costly
and image- damaging recall actions.

HEUFT VX
Increased safety when it goes bang
The standard detection tracks down
completely shattered bottles reliably.
However those who wish to play com-
pletely safe should decide on a HEUFT
VX with an acoustic bottle burst detec-
tion. It also detects those containers
where only individual parts have burst
away.
For this a photocell identifies extremely
underfilled bottles. Because a fill level
which is too low is the first indication
of a partially burst bottle. A check is
carried out to see whether another
event can be linked to this underfilling in
order to verify this assumption: a loud
bang. For this a microphone constantly
monitors the level of noise in the vicinity
of the filler. A partially burst bottle is
considered to be detected if there is a
connection between the typical noise of
a bang and the underfilling which has
been detected. In this case adjacent
containers are rejected, bottles during
the subsequent circuits are purposefully
underfilled and glass splinters removed
from the areas at risk by means of the
shower function. This also works when
the machine stops after a bang because
the function of the detection is contain-
er-related and not time-related. Better
safe than sorry.

Underfilling as well as overfilling are
conditions which are not wanted (by
the customer, the legislator or the
producer). A measurement with camera,
high frequency or X-ray technology
provides the best result depending on
the container and the filled product.
Transparent containers can be checked
optically. LEDs illuminate the container
from the side. The light is directed via a
The fill level check
mirror to a CCD camera which takes a
picture of the fill level.
The product quantity in the container
changes an electric field when passing
through the measuring bridge in the
case of the high frequency technique.
The filling quantity is determined
exactly by measuring this change. The
advantage of this process is that foam
which may be on the product, e.g. in the
case of soft drinks or beer, is taken into
consideration by the foam compensation
and does not result in false rejections.
The product attenuates the beam in
the case of the fill level examination by
means of the X-ray measurement. A
receiver registers this and the fill level of
the container is provided by evaluating
the result.

The modular construction of the
HEUFT VX makes it possible to combine
different inspection modules which suit
the requirements exactly. Constant new
developments ensure that the HEUFT
quality assurance systems redefine the
best available inspection technology.
The photocells which detect excessive
height are good value for money,
robust and versatile. Colour sensors
Closure detection techniques
ensure that the product reaches the
customer with the correct closure.
Camera-based systems such as the
HEUFT VISION are more flexible
and check a number of features e.g.
that the safety elements are correctly
positioned, complete and intact.
The presence and tightness of metal
closures is inspected by means of
sensors which work inductively or
acoustically and canted closures can
be identified by means of ultrasonic
sensors.

An inspection which only views the
container from one side suffices for a
number of applications. Durable and
low-maintenance LED strobes illu minate
the upper area of a container in the
case of the HEUFT VISION module.
A CCD camera on the opposite side
takes a picture of the silhou ette so
that the complete closure area is
displayed in the camera picture. Reliable
information is obtained regarding the
Exactly viewed
correct position of the closure as well
as the completeness and intactness of
the safety elements (e.g. the tamper
evident ring) by evaluating this picture.
Furthermore the fill level is checked in
the case of transparent containers.
A 360 degree inspection of the closure
can be implemented using a second
HEUFT VISION if this is re quired.
Alternatively it is also possible to carry
out a pure all-around closure inspection
without a fill level detection using a
module which takes four individual
pictures by means of two mirror cabinets
and evaluates them.

Both the quality and the ability to
keep longer of carbonated drinks
deteriorates drastically if the container
has a leak and carbon dioxide can
escape.
The tightness of products which have
been closed with a closure made of a
All aspects of the closure
magnetisable material (e.g. tinplate or
aluminium) can be checked with the
HEUFT sonic detection.
The system stimulates the closure to
oscillate using a magnetic pulse. The
noise which results is recorded by
means of a microphone and evaluated.
Residual air which has become trapped
under the closure is identified by the
HEUFT O2 add-on. These residual air
bubbles which cannot be detected by
optical systems whilst being transported
cause unpasteurised beers to spoil
prematurely.

www.heuft.com
HEUFT VX
The use of the HEUFT magnetic tracking
improves results significantly when
different closures are used:
It also stimulates the closure and
analyses the noise recorded working on
the same principle as the HEUFT sonic.
However it carries this out at two
positions during production. The first
is after the filler where the pressure
inside the bottle has not built up yet.
Message in a bottle
This measurement provides the special
characteristics for each individual
closure. The result of this measurement
is coded and saved on the closure
container-related according to the
functional principle of a disc or music
cassette.
A second measurement is carried out
after the pasteuriser. The final internal
pressure should have built up at this
position in the case of a perfect bottle.
The data from the first measurement
is read out from the closure and
compared to the current result. The
press ure rise to the nominal pressure
causes a characteristic change to the
tone in a perfectly closed bottle. This
does not occur in the case of a slighter
press ure rise - that is in the case of a
faulty closure.

The label is the most important
source of information for the customer
be cause many products with their
different variations can only be
differentiated with difficulty.
The presence check is carried out by
means of light scanners which illuminate
the container and determine the
presence by means of the reflection
characteristics.
Label fraud is not possible
The camera-based label check inspects
the absolute position of a label as well
as its position in relation to others in
the case of several. Furthermore it is
ensured that it is the correct label. This
information is determined by taking
four individual pictures of an unaligned
container which are put together into a
total developed view by the software.
The best-before date (BBD) which has
been applied is checked by means
of the HEUFT vio OCR an intelligent
mini camera. The compact system
offers an automatic data adaptation
and reads the BBD even in the most
difficult environmental situation due to
its multi coloured LED illumination.

When the production flow is to be
distributed onto several conveyors a
system is required which fulfils this task
reliably.
The HEUFT VX offers more than “just“
reliability. The laning system handles
up to seven lanes. At the same time
the ratio for allocating the containers to
individual lanes can be freely selected.
Suitable laning
Jam switches are used in order to
ensure that the lanes are evenly used
to full capacity. These identify full
lines and exclude these from the laning
process; a function which is noticeable
as regards the efficiency of the entire
equipment. If the laning process to be
carried out is subject to external sources
then these can also be processed by the
HEUFT VX.

Samples are taken in order to check
the production quality. It is important
to be able to take samples according
to strict rules in order to draw reliable
conclusions. The HEUFT VX makes this
possible!
The operator can reject a row of
consecutive containers by entering the
Exemplary sampling
number he wishes if a cross-section of
production is required.
Individual filler valves or closer heads
can be selected separately in order to
check them. The required amount can
also be adjusted here.
The HEUFT VX offers the possibility to
enter conditions for sampling in order
to form a representative cross-section.
For example samples are obtained
under standard production conditions
by defining the minimum speed and
abort conditions.

The HEUFT reflexx image processing system
Camera-based systems, such as those
used in the inspection of the HEUFT VX
for example, provide large amounts of
data which have to be processed in real
time. Combining two camera pictures
can only be achieved by using extremely
powerful image processing technology.
The calculating speeds of image
processors available on the market
often do not suffice for these tasks and
can only meet these requirements at
low production outputs.
The basic processing steps are already
carried out in a very short time on a
hardware level by using the HEUFT
reflexx image processing card which
has been specially developed for
such tasks. This leaves more time for
software controlled picture analysis.
The result is a level of accuracy which is
unparalleled on the market.
