Boat Winch A Winch is a mechanical device that is used to pull in or let out (wind out) or otherwise adjust the "tension" of a rope or wire rope (also called "cable" or "wire cable"). Winches are typically used to raise the mainsail and to trim in jib sheets. The line is wrapped clockwise around the winch drum and a handle inserted in the top; cranking the handle turns the drum to bring in the line. Boat Winches usually have 2 speeds. Grinding one direction is faster while the other direction is more powerful.
