Nathaniel Hawthorne as a feministic writer

• Nathaniel Hawthorne was deeply interested in portraying women character.

• It became critical argument for his work.• A quick search of the MLA bibliography yields

128 entries under “Hawthorne and Women” (not all treat fictional subjects) and another 111 on female characters in the tales and romances.

• His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem Witch Trials, who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne" in order to hide this relation.

• The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The trials resulted in the executions of twenty people, most of them women.
