Background The Municipality of Calvisano had an installation that consisted mainly of 100W and 150W mercury vapor lamps and sodium vapor lamps with high energy consumption. At the same ti-me the lighting system did not meet the required levels of illumination. The old installation also had a continuous and costly maintenance. Furthermore the municipality wanted to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and eliminate the environmentally hazardous mercury vapor lamps. Since September 2013 the new insta-llation of 1.449 units of HeSaLight street lights in the City of Calvisano has considerably improved the level of illumination throughout the city, the energy efficiency of the entire public lighting system as well as significantly reduced the city´s maintenance costs.

The Challenge The main objective was to optimize the overall lighting le-vels to give the citizens a higher degree of perceived securi-ty and feeling of wellbeing, but also improve the visual per-ception of residential streets. At the same time the City Council wanted to have total control of the new lighting system to reduce maintenance costs and management. The energy efficiency goal was to achieve a reduction in energy consumption of no less than 60%. All this had to be achieved under the financial constraint of not spending more on their street lights than today and provide a return on investment equal to or faster than the supplier warranty on the new lamps installed.

The Solution Our local partner Esco Brixia decided to make an entirely new lighting plan using the HeSaLight PRO series street lights that are much more efficient and better performing. Esco Brixia used 1.384 units of the PRO series in a completely dimmable version, in versions with 30W, 40W, 60W, 110W and 120W(HL-SL-PRO 30W-120W LumIIntel), depending on the classification of the road and the position of the luminaire. They also used 45 suspended street lights (HL-SUS-30W LumIIntel). The use of asymmetric optics allowed a uniform distribution of light that improves visibility for drivers and perceived safety for pedestrians. The relative low color temperature of 3200K (White-Yellow) gives the light a familiar tone. The precise optics has eliminated light pollution to homes adja-cent to the street, a former problem in some areas. Several historic buildings were illuminated by 20 projectors (HL-FL-60W) to maintain the impression of the historical architec-ture, but with a better light distribution and very low energy consumption. The Cloud-based remote management system LumIIntelTM has been configured and installed to maximize savings and energy efficiency. This system gives the real time status of each street lamp and allows easy handling with one click. The 128-bit encryption similar to that of online banking, guaran-tees secure access anywhere and anytime for a system that is simple, fast and efficient to manage. The complete installation was carried out by Esco Brixia and has considerably improved the lighting levels, energy efficiency and manageability of city´s the entire street lighting system.

The Results The results obtained in this project are very significant and the electricity consumption fell by 66 %, from 814.000 kWh to 280.000 kWh per year. The payback period was less than four years, while in the financing by HeSaLight is provided for 5 years. This project has given the city an immediate positive cash flow of more than 34.000 Euros per year, that can be used to improve the city with other projects. In addition to the financial benefits, the project prevents more than 247 tons of CO2 per year from being emitted into the atmosphere, reducing the carbon footprint from street lighting with 66%. The technical lifetime of the installation is expected to be 12,8 years, more than 3 times the payback period and as the payback period is less than 4 years it is within the wa-rranty period of 5 years. Beyond the immediate benefits, financial savings and envi-ronmental improvement, this solution provides the City of Calvisano high quality products with extended operation and a lighting system that is controllable, manageable and very well installed.
