A new place with a new nameIn any stage of life I feel like the duration is marked, defined as
the progress or accomplishment a person makes with it. Almost as if it can only be deemed worthwhile and productive if they have left a piece of themselves behind, if there is continued growth long after the stage has passed.Over the past two years, since graduating college and embarking
on my first official job, I’ve been monitoring how things have changed and how different my life would be if I had chosen a different path – a variant of my final choices.Fresh out of college, anxious and excited, I started at Spectrum
Publications in Wooster with an air of uncertainty. I was afraid that I couldn’t succeed in what everyone was telling me was now “the real world.” I had faith, don’t get me wrong, that everything was going to work out how it was supposed to. I knew that there would be ups and downs, that I’d make mistakes and be unavoidably human. But when I walked through the doors on my first day, the nerves overtook and I couldn’t at that time realize that I was falling into the exact place I was meant to be.Now at the peak of my comfort and content a new adventure is
knocking. It always seems that (as the turn of phrase goes) “when it rains,
it pours” has been the motto for my life – in blessings and in disappointments. This is no different. When my fiancé, Brendan, proposed last July and we decided
on a June 30 wedding date, we thought we were covering all of our bases and ensuring that we would be providing a smooth transition into married life. He was set to graduate from his master’s program in May and job hunt afterward, while I worked around other commitments that come with the summer season. What we didn’t expect was for him to land a job before the
wedding – thus the rain started. With a great opportunity on the horizon and wedding
preparations piling, the past few weeks have been in a word...insane.I’ve been told (repeatedly) that the most stressful moments in a
person’s life are: getting married, starting a job and moving. One, check. Two, check. Three...check.I always knew that relocating was an almost certain possibility
with his field. I even expected it to happen shortly into our marriage. But when Quincy University called to offer him the job on June 5 it hit. People often talk about their relationships with their coworkers
and their bosses. Many of them even go as far to acknowledge a closeness, a family unit that they find. It comes as no shock to me when that’s the case. These are, afterall, the people that we spend the majority of our time with, outside of our parents and spouses. There are so many things that I count as blessings in my life, so
many ways in which I’m fortunate. This job has been a blessing. I’ve been able to meet many wonderful and interesting people, learn about another culture, hear stories from generations passed, build relationships and expand my resumé all the while doing something that I love.As I begin to transition yet again from the familiar to the
unknown I want to thank all of the people that have offered support, encouragement, laughter, challenges and so many memories. And of course, thank you to the many dedicated readers of Spectrum Publications’ products. Without them, nothing I have done would have been possible. In this moment. In this stage. My time has been marked.
Whether I have accomplished anything or progressed myself is
not for me to say. In time I’ll know if my moment was worthwhile to anyone else, but to me...I have grown in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise. Now it’s bittersweet – the adventure with the leaving. I have left a piece of myself with you all, whether you keep it or not is up to you.

A proud man is always looking down on things and
peope; and, of course, as long as you are looking
down, you cannot see anything that is above you.
-C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
I want to be the kind of person that kind people like and want to be like.-Jarod Kintz, At even one penny, this book would be overpriced. In fact, free is too expensive, because you’d still waste your time by reading it.
To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to.-Khalil Gibran
Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?-Robert Browning, Men and Women and Other Poems
Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.-Rabindranath Tagore
We’ve forgotten much. How to struggle, how to rise to dizzy heights and sink to unparalleled depths. We no longer aspire to anything. Even the finer shades of despair are lost to us. We’ve ceased to be runners. We plod from structure to conveyance to employment and back again. We live within the boundaries that science has determined for us. The measuring stick is short and sweet. The full gamut of life is a brief, shadowy continuum that runs from gray to more gray. The rainbow is bleached. We hardly know how to doubt anymore.-Richard Matheson, Collected Stories, Vol. 1
The true measure of many is not what he dreams, but what he aspires to be; a dream is nothing without action. Whether one fails or succeeds is irrelevant; all that matters is that there was motion in his life. That alone affects the world.-Mike Norton, White Mountain
Spit on the ceiling. Anybody can spit on the floor.-Dave Saxe
We swung over the hills and over the town and back again, and I saw how a man can be a
master of a craft, and how a craft can be master of an
element. I saw the alchemy of perspective reduce my world,
and all my other life, to grains in a cup. I learned to watch, to
put my trust in other hands than mine. And I learned to
wander. I learned what every dreaming child needs to know
– that no horizon is so far that you cannot get above it
or beyond it.-Beryl Markham, West with
the Night

BUSINESS PROFILE
The Salvation Army (TSA) is motivated by a love of God and a concern for the needs of all humanity. TSA is a branch of the Christian church that is organized and operated in military fashion. Its four main goals are to 1) preach the gospel, 2) spread Christian truths, 3) provide basic human necessities such as food, clothing and shelter and 4) work to promote spiritual, moral and physical well-being.TSA serves people in over 100 countries, which include the U.S., the West Indies, Paris, Africa, India,
Asia and many more. It is run by both volunteers and paid staff.Since its beginning in the U.S. in 1880, TSA has offered many different programs, which vary in order
to meet the needs of different communities. Wooster’s TSA Corps has also modified its offerings to

best fit its community’s needs when it arrived more than 20 years ago. There are 17 people currently employed at Wooster’s Corps. In order to create the best safety net without duplicating
services, TSA partners and works with others as a member of Continuum of Care as well as the United Way Board of Directors. For example, upon starting in Wooster, TSA realized
there was already a food pantry, but no soup kitchen, so they began a soup kitchen program (which serves lunch every Monday through Friday). The Wooster Corps of TSA offers a youth center, which
helps children struggling in education and provision. The youth center provides a safe place to play, as well as
supper (Monday through Thursday), so that no child is left behind.TSA also has an emergency shelter, which is available to
single men, women and families. Wooster’s TSA Corps is the only place in Wayne County that provides emergency shelter for 90 days for men woman and children, and is open 24/7. It has 44 beds and is currently expanding another family
dorm within the TSA building. As another example of addressing the need that is present, Wooster’s Corps saw the homeless in the community and rose to the occasion. “Depending on the need that’s driven at the moment, we
will step up and try to address that,” said Robert Kramer, Major, Corps Commanding Officer of the Northeast Ohio Division of The Salvation Army.A support program at TSA “helps with life skills, proper
care for selves and others and teaching [children] a sense of duty and responsibility to themselves, their families and the world at large,” Kramer said. “Their character will be shaped in a way that will hopefully
make them better citizens for the future.” Programs include Sunbeams, Girl Guards and Boys’
Adventure Club (Rangers and Explorers). Each includes a system in which individuals can earn badges based on certain responsibilities and activities that they must conduct (comparable to boy/girl scouts).Utility and rent/mortgage assistance is offered through
TSA based on financial need. Prescription drugs may also be provided for those in need.Coats for Kids is a program operated through TSA’s
Women’s Auxiliary that provides up to 650 new designer coats of all different colors and sizes to children in need. “No one would know that the children receiving these
coats got them from TSA…so they don’t have that stigma of being poor,” Kramer said.Wooster’s TSA Corps offers a week’s experience at
Camp NEOSA in Carollton, Ohio. There are openings for 29 people — if interested, call Wooster’s TSA for more information. A scholarship may be provided for children in need to
ensure that they can attend. Individuals may participate even if you’re not a member of TSA or even participating in a program. On this summer camp adventure, children can camp out
under the stars, go boating, swim, have cookouts, various fellowship activities and more.
“I went as a kid and absolutely loved it. I wanted to go every year,” Kramer recalls. “Camp [NEOSA] became one of those things that I passionately loved. It’s a wonderful place.”Wooster’s TSA Corp also provides a summer day camp for
local children, as well as a vacation bible school (summer). What many don’t know is the strong bond between TSA
and the Church. Wooster’s Salvation Army Church is connected to the main building and offers bible studies, prayer meetings, Sunday school and church services. “A lot of people don’t know about the spiritual side
of TSA,” Kramer said. “[It] began by a man who was a pastor, but that piece of [TSA] has become less and less known and TSA became recognized more for the services it provides.”The original slogan of TSA was “Heart to God, Hand
to Man.” “That’s the one that I have a preference for,” Kramer said. The current motto is “Doing the Most Good.” “I like that one, but I think [the original slogan] touches
on the identity of who the Army is in that if our heart’s right with God, it will naturally compel us to serve our community and help those who are down to bring them up and to empower people to stand on their own. Teach them how to fish, versus here’s a good/services and then leave them stuck in the same position. We believe that you have to treat the whole person — body, soul and spirit.”TSA Church is open to anyone. Its Sunday opening
exercise takes place Sundays at 9:45 a.m., Sunday school at 10 a.m. and church services are Sundays at 11 a.m.TSA’s theme is “blood and fire.” The blood represents the
blood of Jesus Christ, shed for the salvation of mankind, and the fire represents the baptism of the Holy Spirit. “None of us can do what we’re called to do without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit,” Kramer said.Wooster’s TSA is located at 437 S. Market Street in
Wooster, Ohio. Robert Kramer and his wife, Jody Kramer, are co-directors and pastors of this location. For further questions, please call 330-264-4704.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
passion for history keeps eighth grade social studies teacher Elaine Hess returning to the nation’s capital time after time, and even after 61 visits to Washington, D.C., she still enjoys it.“The things D.C. for me, I never grow tired of
it,” she said, “because you’re always going with somebody who’s seeing it for the first time. You see it through their eyes.”Many of Hess’ trips to Washington have been with
her students at Norwayne Middle School, where she has taught for 32 years. In recent years, she has tried to include in the trip
something related to veterans, something for which she has a passion. In the last two years, students have had the opportunity to greet Honor Flights coming into Washington from Dayton. Also, each year she tries to take the students
somewhere new. This past school year, she took her students to see the Pentagon memorial for the first time. However, she and her husband had gone beforehand to check out the memorial for themselves.“I never take the students to someplace I’ve not
been,” she said.Hess’ own first trip to the capital was when she was
an elementary school student.“I don’t remember much except the Washington
Monument, I was so mesmerized by the Washington Monument,” Hess said.Years later, she and her husband took their family
to the city for the first time. Hess’ youngest son drew a picture of the Washington Monument as his “dream house” for a school assignment.“I thought that was awesome. I thought it was
great,” Hess said.
“Our family has probably all inherited a love of history from my mom,” said Hess’ son, Zac.Hess also discussed her most recent trip when she saw the
Pentagon memorial with her students. Relatives of one of the victims happened to be visiting the memorial at the same time, and they were able to talk to the students. It’s those kinds of connections that make it worth it for
Hess to return to the city again and again.“That was kind of cool. It’s more than just an event that
you read about in a history book,” she said. When she’s not working as a teacher, Hess likes to focus
on her “faith, family and friends.” She lives in Ashland County on a farm with her husband where she raises beef cattle. Recently, they put a miniature log cabin on their

Unconventional Career Paths for Women
artha Harshorn, 21, is currently working on her apprenticeship for the welding program at the Wayne County Schools Career Center. Harshorn is employed at Ebner Furnaces in Wadsworth for the duration of her apprenticeship.According to Harshorn it is a four-year program in
which the student must log 8,000 hours. At Ebner, employees are responsible for welding, fitting and metal prep. Harshorn said she was thrown into the welding group right away and that’s where she started.“I dropped out of college after the first semester,”
Harshorn said. “I just knew that it wasn’t something I wanted to do. Right away I started job searching and I kept noticing all of these opportunities for welding. I sort of took it as a sign and just decided to apply for the program. I’m at the top of my class and I love it…every single day.”Although she’s currently on summer break,
Harshorn is still working five days a week at Ebner Furnaces. Her typical schedule is to work 6 a.m.-2:30 p.m., then go to school 4-9 p.m.With a loaded day, Harshorn admits to being
physically and mentally drained at the end of the day, but she couldn’t be happier.“I went in knowing nothing about it,” Harshorn
said. “That’s just a testament to everyone I work with. They are so willing to work with you and help you along the way. It’s a great environment.”Harshorn said that she can definitely see this as
being a long-term career.“I want to try it,” Harshorn said. “I want to get into
all the different fields of it.”For the next nine years she plans on learning as
much as she can whenever she can. Although, one field does seem particularly interesting to her – metal art.“A friend from my class and I are planning projects
for the summer,” Harshorn said. “It should be a lot of fun.”Even with all of her hard work and dedication, she
admits that there can be some challenges, mostly

because of her size.“I’m the only female that works on the floor,” Harshorn
said. “I’m the smallest and my size has definitely proven to be a challenge. It takes me twice as long and I use twice as much energy to do the same job as someone else. The things we work with are thousands of pounds. It took me months to be able to lift a gas cylinder,” Harshorn laughed. However, even though she has to work harder to keep up
she also testifies that her coworkers are very helpful. In the beginning, before she was accepted into the program,
Harshorn said that she didn’t tell her parents right away. “After I was accepted and I told them, my mom was
convinced that I would be done in two weeks,” Harshorn said. As something she never expected to go into, much less
shown a lot of interest in, Harshorn also said there were other aspects of the job that she didn’t anticipate.“I hate fire,” Harshorn said, “and now my arms are covered
in small burns. It’s definitely something I wasn’t expecting…

to end up loving a job that entails the possibility of fire everyday.”Harshorn’s father and two grandfathers also welded.“My family is definitely working class,” Harshorn said. “We’ve
always been the type to get our hands dirty. I never saw myself working in an office.”In the long run, Harshorn is adamant about what she wants to
accomplish in the future – particularly in her hopes to travel.“I want to travel,” she said. “I want to go where the opportunity
is.” Nonetheless, she also believes she will stay close to her family.“It’s a great area,” Harshorn said. “I love Wayne County. I love
being in Wayne County and I’ve always been very close to my grandma and the rest of my family.”In her experience, Harshorn advises to other women (and
men) who are considering venturing out into their chosen career fields that it’s ultimately about doing what you love.“You can’t just wake up and be a welder,” she said. “I went into
it imagining every worst scenario and I had a lot of support, which you need. But I love it. If you don’t love it, don’t do it. If you have to force yourself to go to work everyday, you’re not going to give your full potential.”
Wayne County Schools
Career CenterThe Wayne County Schools Career Center opened as the
Wayne County Joint Vocational School in 1969 to provide vocational training for Wayne County high school juniors and seniors. Educators from all 10 Wayne County school districts and hundreds of local skilled tradespeople, managers, business owners and agencies worked together to ensure that the school met the needs of local business and industry. The vocational school offered 22 trade programs and three academic classes, English, social studies and history, to 490 students, and was centrally located in Smithville. Many programs have been added as the demand for workers
has changed, and the name of the school was changed in 1984 to the Wayne County Schools Career Center. Currently, the Wayne County Schools Career Center offers 28 career and technical programs, and 18 academic courses. Two offsite courses are included in that count, the Exercise Science and Sports Medicine program at Wooster High School, and Teaching Professions at The University of Akron Wayne College.Adult Education began in 1967 with a Practical Nursing
program and a Machine Apprenticeship program. In 1969, Adult Education moved into the WCJVS building, offering 34 classes. It has continued to expand and is now a full service

RESTAURANT REVIEW
You can find a grilled chicken, grilled cheese or ham sandwich on any menu of any restaurant in town, but not like the choices at Broken Rocks Café & Bakery in downtown Wooster. “Sandwiched” in between other business on Liberty Street, is the quaint little Broken Rocks Café & Bakery.Upon entering the doors my family and I were greeted
by a friendly hostess. We were promptly seated and brought a sample of the wonderful bread that had greeted our senses when we arrived. The bread came from the artisan bakery found on the premises. The bakery consists of anything from cinnamon rolls to organic whole wheat bread and many choices in between. One of our choices for an entrée was the Grilled
Chicken & Avocado sandwich. This consisted of grilled chicken, green chili avocado mayonnaise and lettuce on focaccia with coleslaw. This is not an ordinary grilled chicken sandwich. The avocado mayonnaise compliment the sandwich nicely.Another selection was the grilled portabella sandwich
with roasted red peppers, leaf lettuce and our Broken Rocks’ own sauce on focaccia with orange slices. Once again, we were not disappointed. The ham and swiss sandwich was chosen by the less adventurous member of my group. Honey-cured ham, baby swiss, dijon mustard, mayonnaise and leaf lettuce on focaccia with potato salad is always a safe and tasty choice, but also something that can be found in my own refrigerator. Our evening was topped off with Belgian chocolate
custard and tiramisu. The custard was really a hit, but the tiramisu was not on the top of my list. Although the others thought it was excellent. Broken Rocks Café & Bakery is a great place for a business lunch or a night out for drinks and conversation with friends on the weekend. We really enjoyed our experience there and will definitely return.

The standard frequency for prenatal visits is fourteen to sixteen times during your pregnancy. Schedule a visit for prenatal care as soon as you know you are pregnant. Even if you are not a first time mom early and regular prenatal care is important. Each pregnancy is different. The internet provides a wealth of information to guide you during your pregnancy. However information
from the computer or a book can never take the place of care received by a primary care provider. Wayne County is fortunate to have many wonderful board certified Obstetricians who want to serve your
family during this exciting time. For more information about available obstetricians groups, call Wooster Community Hospital Women’s

Q: I just found out that I am pregnant. What should I expect during my first initial prenatal visit?
A:
Prenatal care is the health care you get while you are pregnant. The prenatal period is a time of transition in the life of a family as preparations are being made for birth. Prenatal care emphasis is placed on health education and health promotion. Receiving early and regular prenatal care is important to the health of you and your baby. Health care contributes to the woman’s and family’s ability to make informed choices throughout the childbearing cycle. The impact of regular prenatal care and the possibility of positive lifestyle changes can extend into the life of the family. Babies of mothers who do not receive prenatal care are three times more likely to have low birth weight babies. For more information about available obstetricians groups, call Wooster Community Hospital Women’s

jumpsproperty for their granddaughters to play in.“That has just been tons of fun,” she said. “It’s a real focal point.”She is very involved with Southview Grace Brethren Church in
Ashland, particularly with the church’s annual Wifflefest, a “huge” wiffle ball tournament with about 600 registrants that takes place on the Fourth of July.“It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s a chance to give back to the
community.”Also in July, Hess goes back to Washington, D.C., with a church
group. While there, they help with an inner-city church in Washington.“Her passion is teaching and serving, those two things really sum
up Elaine. When she gets to teach the hands-on history that way, she’s in her element,” said Mark Abel, senior pastor at Southview Grace Brethren. “She’s as good as any tour guide you can get.”Hess is also active in the Ashland County Alzheimer’s Association,
something with which she became involved when her mother had the disease.“People just need to be so aware. It’s just a disease that’s not
going away,” she said.Though she loves her job, Hess plans to retire from teaching after
next year to spend more time with her family.“I treasure the fact that my parents had time with my kids. If I
didn’t retire soon, I would miss that opportunity,” Hess said. “I’m one of those people that, I’m never going to be ready to retire, but family is also a priority. I wanted that time with my family.”“Whether community is where you live or where you work,
those are the people that you touch, it’s important to make those connections,” Hess said. “People are so much more important than things, for me, those words have been a guiding stick.”“There are a lot of attributes of my mother that my brother and
I, and our wives, want to model,” Zac said.Zac noted that for his mother, teaching has always been more
than a job to her, and she always tries to put her own desires aside and help others.“Her love for the families, along with the students, as well as the
area, has been clear to all of us.”
