Whipstock
Whipstocks should be used to exit casing:· when the exit has to be in a specific direction· when the exit has to go through more than one casing string· when the exit is into hard or very soft formations where
complete control of direction is required· when the point of exit has a poor cement bond· when exiting more than once from a single wellbore
The benefits of milling with a whipstock are:· requires less milling
· results in lower overall drilling costs
· retains the integrity of the casing
· allows access to the lower wellbore after the whipstock isretrieved
· allows for a more economical fluid program by generating fewercuttings

Section Mill
Section Mills should be used to exit casing:
· when a larger window is required for liner installation or other downhole drilling operations
· when a very hard formation at the window prevents an exitfrom a whipstock concave
· when a severe “dogleg” in the wellbore prevents running a whipstock to the kick-off point (KOP)
The benefits of milling with a section mill are: · running through severe “doglegs” because of the shorter
bottom hole assembly (BHA)
· removing entire casing sections to allow the running of larger OD tools
· allowing shorter radius drill-out for a greater build rate
· allowing multiple exits at the same depth

Section Mill Limitations
The limitations of milling with a section mill are:
· an uncontrolled direction at exit
· the loss of casing integrity
· more cuttings to be removed from the wellbore
· can only exit one casing string
· additional costs are incurred for requirements suchas a better fluid program, cement plugs, under-reaming,extra rig time, and extra trips in the hole
